SUWANEE, Ga. – DePauw University had its streak of three consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball titles snapped last season by Oglethorpe University, but that did not deter the head coaches of the conference from making the Indiana Tigers the prohibitive favorite to win the 2009-10 SCAC league championship. In exclusive voting by the head coaches of the conference, DePauw received eight of 12 first place votes and finished with 117 total points. The coaches’ second choice, Centre College, picked up two first-place votes and 109 total points while third choice, Trinity University, garnered the remaining two first-place votes and 107 total points. DePauw is coming off a 22-6 season and with the return of 11 letterwinners including three starters from last year, the Tigers are poised to earn their ninth conference title since joining the league in 1998-99. DePauw made its sixth straight NCAA Division III tournament appearance last year and enter the 2009-10 season ranked seventh in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll and 12th by D3hoops.com. The Tigers return a pair of third team all-SCAC players in junior guard Katie Mathews and senior forward Emily Marshall. Mathews averaged 9.2 points and 3.5 assists per game last year, while Marshall scored at a 9.0 clip and hauled down 9.4 rebounds per outing. Junior guard Brianna Frigerio also returns after averaging 5.3 points per game last year. Senior forward Jenna Fernandez missed last year due to injury, but was a starter in 2007-08 when she averaged 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Head Coach Kris Huffman enters her 17th season with the Tigers. Her teams have posted a 354-92 record which included the 2007 NCAA Division III National Championship. Centre hopes to build off its 2008-09 breakout season when the Colonels were the fourth-most improved team in the nation. After a 7-16 finish in 2007-08, 2009 SCAC Coach-of-the-Year Wendie Austin-Robinson led her troups to the semifinal round of the SCAC tournament and an 18-9 overall mark – a nine game improvement from the prior season. Centre is returning a majority of its players from last season, including four starters, after only losing two seniors. The Colonels will be led by senior guard Chelsea Goodman, who was named to the 2009 all-SCAC second team. Goodman was ninth in the conference in scoring (14.7 points per game) and led the conference in steals (2.3 per game) last season. Sophomore guard Maggie Prewitt, the 2009 SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year, was 12th in the SCAC in scoring (12.7 points per game), sixth in assists (3.9 per game) and ninth in steals (2.0 per game). Sophomore center Lauren Huter was 10th in the league in rebounds (7.0 boards per game) and third in blocked shots (2.1 per game). Trinity is ranked 18th in the initial Division III ranking of the 2009-10 season, returning four starters from a team that chalked up a 20-8 record last year. Last year marked Trinity's third 20-win season in the past four years. The Tigers, who have eight veteran players on this season’s roster, went 12-4 in the SCAC, and advanced to its fifth SCAC Tournament final in seven years. Junior guard Danielle Hubenak, who was named third team all-SCAC last year, finished seventh in the league in scoring (15.1 points per game) and third in assists (4.8 per game). She broke Trinity’s record for single-season assists, finishing with 133 last year. She also set a new school record with seven three-pointers in one game, as well as breaking the previous record for single-season three-pointers made. A pair of returning sophomores will also shoulder some of the scoring burden as guard Ali Marzella and forward Abby Dietert finished in the top 15 in the league in scoring - averaging 12.4 points and 12.3 points per game respectively last season. Head Coach Amie Bradley’s Tigers were ranked 10th nationally in scoring offense, averaging 76.6 points per contest .

Hendrix College is slotted at fourth and will rely on the play of senior forward Christina Byler, the league’s returning scorer at 17.1 points per game. Byler, a second team all-SCAC performer last year, also led the team in rebounding with 7.8 (sixth in the SCAC) caroms per game. First-year Head Coach Thad McCracken, after serving as the men’s assistant for the last four seasons, moves over to assume the reigns of the women’s program – a program that lost just one senior from last year’s roster and welcomes four key returners as the 2009-10 senior leaders. The squad remains on the young side with zero juniors, nine sophomores and three first years. Forwards Lindsay Merritt and Chelsey White as well as guard Amanda Morris are all expected to provide senior leadership. Oglethorpe University, the defending SCAC champion, finds itself as the coaches’ fifth pick after losing one of the more impressive senior classes in conference history. Included among those graduating seniors were the league’s top two all-time leading scorers, all-Americans Katie Kulavic (1,952 points) and Anna Findley (1,864 points). Head Coach Ron Sattele has the unenviable task of replacing that senior class which compiled a four-year mark of 96-26, including a 27-4 mark last season and a NCAA Final Four appearance in 2007-08. The Petrels plan to infuse the returning talent with a bevy of freshman recruits and transfers. Among the key returning players are junior guard Chelsea MacDonald (5.2 points per game) and junior forward Ari Brown (4.2 points; 2.5 rebounds per game). Rhodes College, the coaches’ sixth pick, will rely on the senior leadership of sharp-shooting guard Becky Atnip, an all-SCAC third team selection last season after averaging 13.7 points per game (11th in the SCAC). Atnip also finished third in the conference in free throw percentage (84.2%) and seventh in three point field goal percentage (37.1%). Head Coach Matt Dean will also need big play from junior guard Lakeya McGill, who averaged 11.2 points (19th in the SCAC) and 3.4 assists per game (ninth in the SCAC). The Lynx finished with a 13-13 overall mark last season while playing in the always tough SCAC East Division. After a 15-10 finish in 2008-09, Birmingham-Southern College, in its third year of provisional membership in the SCAC and NCAA Division III, will have its games count in the conference standings for the first time this season. Although the Panthers still cannot advance to postseason play, their play on the court could and probably will affect who does. Head Coach Brad Hodge returns to the court with a freshman-laden team for the 2009-10 season as Birmingham-Southern returns only two starters - junior Katelyn Wilson (8.6 points per game) and sophomore Erin Jackson (9.0 points per game) - and seven players from last year’s team, while adding 12 new players to the mix. The coaches’ eighth pick, Austin College will look to return to the conference tournament after missing out on the event the last two seasons. The ‘Roos will be led by senior post Katy Williams - a second team all-SCAC player the last two seasons who averaged a double-double a year ago with 13.9 points (10th in the SCAC) and 10.2 rebounds (second in the SCAC) per game. With 763 career rebounds, Williams is just 246 from equaling the SCAC career mark posted by Trinity’s Krista Prato Matthews (1,009). Coach Deb Hunter will also look to senior guards Amber Stafford (7.0 points per game) and Kayla Redden (6.2 points per game), who finished third and fourth on the team in scoring last season, for added scoring punch. Colorado College and Southwestern University tied as the coaches’ ninth selection. Colorado College has to replace versatile all-American Melanie Auguste, who was the SCAC Player-of-the-Year as well as the winner of the prestigious Jostens Trophy while leading her team to a 16-9 mark in 2008-09. If the Tigers are to duplicate last season’s success, second-year coach Liz Campbell will need big production from senior forward Eliese Hansberry – one of just two seniors on this year’s roster. Hansberry averaged 12.4 points (14th in the SCAC) and 7.8 rebounds (fifth in the SCAC) per game last season. Sophomore forward Becky Luetjen also returns after averaging 9.8 points per game as a freshman. Southwestern University returns eight players from last year’s squad that ended 6-19 overall. Jessica Herbst and Narisa Trammell will be senior leaders in the backcourt while Katie Kern will aid on the block. Herbst was third on the team in assists with 51 and averaged 4.8 points per game. Trammell served as point guard last season, averaging 5.6 points per game and was second on the team in steals with 45. Also included in the bunch of returners is junior center Staley Mullins, who led the

Page 5: 2009-20010 - Hendrix College · 2009-11-23 · 2009-20010 . Southern Collegiate ... 2000-01 #Centre College 14-4 22-6 Jennifer Ruff # DePauw University 14-4 19-6 Kris Huffman # University

team in blocks with 71 – the seventh-most blocked shots in a season in SCAC history. Mullins was also second on the team last year in points and rebounds, averaging 9.7 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game. The Majors of Millsaps College have been slated as the pre-season 11th ranked team in the league. Coming off its first SCAC Tournament appearance since 2005-06, there is optimism this season in Jackson. The Majors went 10-16 a year ago, the most wins since the 2004-05 season, and look to build off that momentum. The Millsaps roster is full of talented young players, as it returns three starters from last year’s team including the team’s leading scorer and rebounder sophomore Janice Okeke. Okeke averaged 11.2 points (20th in SCAC) and 7.8 rebounds per game (seventh in SCAC). The coaches’ 12th pick, Sewanee-The University of the South, is looking to improve on last year’s 4-20 mark and return to the SCAC tourney after missing last year’s event for the first time in three years. Junior forward Lauren Gulley is the team’s leading returning scorer (8.9 points per game) and sophomore forward Dani Kabbes, who tied for the team lead in rebounding (5.4 per game), also returns. Senior guards Kelly Morrison and Jamie Robinson will be counted on for leadership as Head Coach Dickie McCarthy finds himself with a 12-person roster that consists of nine first- or second-year players. The 2009-10 season tips off Sunday, November 15.

2009-10 Preview Austin College Kangaroos

Led by senior three-time All-Conference performer Katy Williams, the Austin College women’s basketball team will be looking to return to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in the 2009-2010 season while Williams will be attempting to become the SCAC’s all-time leading rebounder. After finishing last season with a 9-16 overall record and missing out on a SCAC postseason berth for the second year in a row, Coach Deb Hunter’s team returns several key players and welcomes a strong freshman class that will add depth and could help the team get back to the conference tournament. A former SCAC Newcomer of the Year, Williams is one of the top returning players in the SCAC and is currently seventh all-time in conference history with 763 rebounds and has a shot at becoming the all-time leader in that category. In addition to her work on the boards, the post player from Sulphur Springs, Texas averaged 13.9 points per game last season to go along with her 10.2 boards per contest. Helping Williams this season will be senior guards Amber Stafford and Kayla Redden, who finished third and fourth on the team in scoring last season, respectively. Stafford scored 7.0 points per game but stepped up her production in conference play, chipping in 9.1 points while hitting on 34.9% of her three point attempts against SCAC competition. Redden finished the season averaging 6.2 points and hit 37.3% from downtown while starting 23 games last season, finishing the season as the team’s second best three point shooter. The ’Roos will be looking to sophomore Kersti Marusich for depth in the backcourt as the second year player helps make up for the loss of All-Conference guard Maegan Fitzgerald. Marusich played in 23 games last year, starting two, and showed flashes of becoming an outstanding guard in the SCAC in her first season with the ’Roos. Marusich averaged 5.2 points per game and scored a career-best 14 points in an early season game against Gustavus Adolphus. Also returning this year to help Williams in the frontcourt are junior Spenser Cruikshank and sophomores Allison Taylor and Erica McDaniel. Last season Cruikshank started nine games in the post for the ’Roos and blocked a team-best 37 shots, while Taylor provided a great spark off the bench with 3.0 points and 2.4 rebounds on her way to being honored with the team’s Hustle Award at the end of the year. McDaniel started in 16 games last season, pulling down 4.7 boards per game and three times hit double figures on the glass including a 12 rebound performance against SCAC rival Millsaps. This season McDaniel, who stands 6’1”, won’t be the only six footer for Coach Hunter as 6’2” freshman Gwen Seale will add depth on the frontline. With a talented group of newcomers and a strong returning core led by conference player of the year candidate Williams, the ’Roos look to have all the pieces in place to return to the postseason in 2009-2010.

2009-10 Preview Birmingham-Southern College Panthers

After another successful season on the hardwood, the Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball team, under the direction of Head Coach Brad Hodge and Assistant Coach Rena Faust-Holden, returns to the court with a freshman-laden team for the 2009-10 season. The Panthers return only two starters - junior Katelyn Wilson and sophomore Erin Jackson - and seven players from last year’s team, while adding 12 new players to the mix. BSC was 15-10 overall last season, notching wins against in-state rival Huntingdon College, Maryville College, and Emory University, as well as Southwestern University, Austin College, Millsaps College, Hendrix College, Centre College, Sewanee, and Rhodes College in Southern Collegiate Conference action. The Panthers open the season at home again this year, taking on Oakwood University, Nov. 16, and then hosting the Sheraton Birmingham Classic, featuring East Texas Baptist University, Rust College, and Huntingdon College, Nov. 20-21. BSC then hosts Berry College, Nov. 24. Other home highlights include Centre and DePauw, Dec. 4 and 6, Huntingdon, Dec. 13, Hendrix and Millsaps, Jan. 22 and 24, Oglethorpe and Sewanee, Feb. 5 and 7, and Rhodes, Feb. 13. In non-conference road play, the Panthers take on Huntingdon, Emory, and Oakwood. SCAC play will again prove challenging, as DePauw and Trinity are both ranked in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll, with DePauw being named seventh and Trinity ranking 17th. “As tradition has it with the SCAC, our schedule provides us with outstanding competition against nationally-ranked opponents,” Hodge said. “Additionally, we have added some new teams along with past rivals in Emory and Huntingdon that will prepare us well for SCAC play. Most importantly, we are very thankful to the folks at Sheraton Birmingham for supporting us in hosting the Sheraton Classic. We look forward to this becoming one of the nation’s best D3 early season tournaments.” The team fields no seniors this season, and only two juniors in Wilson and Jamie Key. Wilson, a guard who took the court in all 25 games and started 15 times, was fourth on the team last season averaging 8.6 points a game as well as 2.3 rebounds a contest. “Katelyn and Jamie will return with the most time in the program,” Hodge said. “By now they have a better understanding of what is expected. As a result, they will be counted upon to provide the necessary guidance and leadership that we expect from veteran players. Obviously, Katelyn has the most game experience out of anyone on the team, but now she will be asked to bring more to help shape this team into what we want for the future. We will be placing a lot of responsibility on her as a result, but I am confident because she has never failed to do what we have asked or demanded of her. Jamie has certainly demonstrated with her work ethic and off-season improvements that she is committed to have a great year and we expect her to continue with those developments.” The sophomore class returns five players from last season in guards Sam Davidson, Haley Stracener, and Jackson, and forwards Ashton Spurgin and Laura Kneiss. Jackson appeared in 23 games last year as a true freshman, drawing 21 starts, and was third on the team with 9.0 points a game. She also pulled down 2.4 rebounds a contest. “This group of sophomores will go from rookies to leading veterans in one season,” Hodge said. “Their leadership will be a committee responsibility and provide support to each other and the two juniors in their leadership roles. It is imperative that we get immediate contribution from this group for us to be successful.” This year’s freshman class is the largest in program history, featuring 12 true freshmen. At the guard position, BSC welcomes Stefanie Kaiser (Gulf Shores, Ala.), Grace Cochran (Birmingham, Ala.), Avery Tumlin (Rainsville, Ala.), Erin Wainwright (Hoover, Ala.), Caroline King (Haleyville, Ala.), Lauren Parks (Birmingham, Ala.), Morgen Aston (Guin, Ala.), and Stephanie Stanley (Huntsville, Ala.). At forward, the Panthers bring in Melanie Short (Pelham, Ala.), Sydney Darnall (Coopertown, Tenn.), and Erin Moore (Trussville, Ala.). “Once again, we have added another strong recruiting class of freshmen,” Hodge said. “Some of them will be asked to step in and contribute immediately, and others can take the time to learn the transitions to college basketball at a comfortable pace. Although, the sooner all are bringing equal contribution, the better this class of freshmen becomes and the better we are at taking advantage of our depth. “There is a tremendous amount of potential in this team,” Hodge continued. “I am finding it difficult to control my excitement and enthusiasm because of the possibilities I see with them. Yet, the difficulties lie with the fact that we are young and inexperienced collectively, and we have to slow down at times and not get too far ahead of ourselves just because we have potential. “With the talent that is within this team, we will be doing more things this year to take advantage of the talents and not just limit ourselves,” Hodge said. “At times we will look very basic and sometimes chaotic, but this is a great attempt at getting players opportunity to contribute and produce to the team. As a result, I believe we can accomplish many things and it will be exciting and entertaining to the campus community and supporters.”

2009-10 Preview Centre College Colonels

Coming off the first winning season since 2001-02 this year’s Centre College women’s basketball team will look to duplicate that feat. Centre is returning a majority of it’s players from last season, including four starters, after only losing two seniors. The 2008-09 team went 18-9 on the season and 10-4 in the conference. The 18-win season was the third highest win total posted by a Centre women’s basketball team during this decade.

Recording 10 conference wins last season was an accomplishment in itself, as that was only the third time that had happened since the 2000 season, with the last time being in 2001-02.

The Colonels have their head coach and 2009 SCAC Coach-of-the-Year, Wendie Austin-Robinson back for her fifth year. Centre will be led by returning senior guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.), who was named to the 2009 All-SCAC Second Team, the 2009 SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year, sophomore point-guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.), and 2009 All-SCAC Honorable Mention, sophomore center Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.).

Goodman is hoping to move into third place on the Centre career scoring list this upcoming year after coming off last season where she was ninth overall in the conference in scoring with 398 points and an average of 14.7 points per game. Goodman was fifth in the conference in free throw percentage at 82.6% and led the conference in steals during the 2008-2009 season with 61.

Prewitt will have high expectations coming into her sophomore year after she was 12th in the conference in scoring with 342 points and sixth in assists with 106 in her first year. Prewitt also tied for ninth place in the conference in steals recording 54 last season.

Although Huter is only a sophomore she will once again be a great presence in the middle as she led the Colonels in rebounding last season and was 10th in the conference with 188 boards. She was also third in the conference in blocked shots with 57.

The Colonels are also expecting strong contributions from seniors Tara Milburn (Shelbyville, Ky.) and Keonia Masterson (Stanford, Ky.) in the post and juniors Amanda Stovall (Louisville, Ky.), Chelsea Luckey (Columbia, Ky.), and Angela Tronzo (Bardstown, Ky.) as well a host of returning sophomores and four incoming freshmen. “We lost two great seniors, but our upper classmen and sophomores this year got a lot of experience last year and should be able to carry that into this season. I have high expectations for them and expect them to do well all year long,” Centre head coach Wendie Austin-Robinson said.

“We are very excited about our freshman class and will expect them to contribute. The conference will be tough overall and we will have to bring our best every game,” Austin-Robinson added.

Centre opens the 2009-2010 season with a home opener against Maryville College on November, 18 at 6:00 p.m.

2009-10 Preview Colorado College Tigers

The Colorado College women’s basketball team will display two noticeable changes when it opens the 2009-10 season. First, obviously, Melanie Auguste won’t be in a Tiger uniform. Second, with 14 players, CC will feature one of its largest rosters in recent memory. But any fears that it will take eight new players to replace Auguste is merely an illusion. “Last year, we put a lot of pressure on our senior All-American,” said head coach Liz Campbell, now in her second season at Colorado College. “This year, no one player has to shoulder that pressure. We have a much more complete roster. Instead of relying on one very talented player, we’ll be a much more balanced squad.” Fortunately, the Tigers have three starters and six letter winners returning from last year’s squad, and all gained considerable experience as part of a team comprised of only nine players. “The returning players got quality playing time before they were fully ready to be in pressure situations,” Campbell said. “The experience of being on a successful team has given them confidence that they can play at this level.” One veteran who has demonstrated the ability to be a go-to player is senior co-captain/forward Eliese Hansberry, who finished second on the team last year by averaging 12.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. The honorable mention all-SCAC selection scored in double figures 18 times and posted six games with double-digit rebounds, including a career-high 16 during a come-from-behind victory at Millsaps. “Her numbers don’t have to be astronomical for us to have success, but she’s got to play consistently as well as she did in her best games,” Campbell said of Hansberry. “It’s really up to her to do the extra work to be among the top players in the conference. She definitely has the ability.” If there is one player who might have to take over some of Auguste’s responsibilities, it would be junior guard Alyssa Aldaz. With 46 games and 14 starts to her credit, as well as the ability to play either guard position, Aldaz is CC’s most experienced backcourt player. She likely will have the ball in her hands a lot, at least early in the season. “She’s one of the players who is most comfortable with the ball in her hands, so she’ll end up playing a lot of point guard,” Campbell said. “But she’s got that scoring mentality. She can put points on the board. “Almost everyday in practice, Alyssa does something I didn’t expect. She definitely has that “wow factor” in her game.” The Tigers also will count on four sophomores – co-captain/forward Becky Luetjen and guards Jenny Knapp, Jordy Stephenson and Emily Wattman-Turner – to build upon very solid freshman campaigns. Luetjen started all 25 games in 2008-09 and finished the season ranked second on the team in minutes played (745) and steals (34), third in scoring 9.8 ppg) and rebounding (5.4 rpg). She scored double-figure points 11 times, including a season-high 25 against Southwestern University in only her second conference game. “Becky really came into her own as the season progressed,” Campbell said. “As a sophomore, she is leading by example.” Wattman-Turner led the team in three-point shooting, knocking down 31 shots from behind the arc. She finished fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 6.6 points per game, and was second with 35 assists. Those numbers should increase this season. “Emily knows what it takes to be a college basketball player,” Campbell said. “That’s the biggest difference between this year and last year. She’s got that year of experience under her belt.” Knapp also appeared in all 25 games and demonstrated the ability to drain three-point shots and use quickness at both ends of the court. Stephenson played in 23 games and is expected to be more of a scoring threat in her second season. “Jenny thinks like a point guard,” Campbell said of Knapp. “She’s an unselfish player and she’s usually looking to create things for her teammates.” Stephenson may have the most untapped potential, and the Tigers will be counting on her to increase her scoring production. "Jordy understands the game," Campbell said. "She knows the right spot to be in on every play, and because of that she’ll get a lot of scoring opportunities." The Tigers will benefit from the addition of eight newcomers for the 2009-10 season, not all of which are first-year players. Laura Glen, who averaged 3.1 points in 20 games during the 2006-07, returns to the program after a two-year absence. Sophomore Alie Ehrensaft joins the squad after playing softball last year. “Laura Glen has a really good basketball IQ,” Campbell said. “As a senior, she can lead from within because of her four years of being a CC student.. Alie was a good softball player. Now she needs to transition from being an athlete to being a basketball player.” The incoming freshmen – guards Collier Clegg, Marissa Gradoz and Hanna Hoopingarner, along with forwards Kalli-Anne Kemling, Sarah Gunkel and Sarah Hutcherson – collectively add athleticism and the experience of playing for successful high school programs. “As a group, they are a lot of fun to be around,” Campbell said. “They’ve come together as a class on their own. They play like they don’t realize they are freshmen. They don’t get intimidated.” That’s a trait that will serve them well in the very competitive SCAC. The Tigers open the season with a pair of home tournaments, including the Colorado College Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 20-22 with games against Augustana College and Piedmont College.

2009-10 Preview DePauw University Tigers

Coming off a 22-6 season which included a sixth straight NCAA Division III Championship appearance, the Tigers return three starters from last year and a fourth who missed last year due to injury. The Tigers head into the 2009-10 season ranked seventh in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll and 12th by D3hoops.com. Senior forward Emily Marshall earned third team all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors after averaging 9.0 points and a team-high 9.4 rebounds per game and is back for her fourth year as a starter. Her 262 boards last year set a DePauw single-season record and she enters her final season ranked fourth all-time with 653 career rebounds. Senior Jenna Fernandez sat out the 2008-09 campaign due to injury after earned second team all-SCAC distinction as a sophomore along with D3hoops.com all-region honors. She averaged 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds and hit 51.1 percent from the field. Senior Danielle Boraz transferred to DePauw prior to last season and saw action in all 28 games last year. She averaged 6.4 points and 4.4 rebounds. Sophomore Katie Aldrich scored 6.8 per game in her rookie season and grabbed 4.0 rebounds, while senior Kristin Barrow played in 12 contests. Junior Katie Mathews returns to the back court after earning third team all-SCAC honors last year. She’s the Tigers’ top returning scorer with 9.2 points and dished out 3.5 assists each game. Junior Brianna Frigerio started 27 games last year while averaging 5.3 points and classmate Brooke Osborne scored at a 7.4-point clip, while knocking in 34 three-pointers. Junior Lauren Goff also came off the bench to average 5.7 points and hit 36 threes while shooting 40.9 percent from beyond the arc. Kathryn Denbow played in 25 games a year ago, scored 2.9 points per game and shot 54.3 percent from the floor. Other returning letterwinners among the guards include junior Courtney Lauer and sophomore Tammy Taylor. Head coach Kris Huffman enters her 17th season with the Tigers and her teams have posted a 354-92 record. Included in that are 10 NCAA postseason appearances with four advancing to at least the national quarterfinals. The 2007 team won the Division III national title. The Tigers open the season against top-ranked Washington-St. Louis with a possible second game against sixth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan. DePauw’s first home game is scheduled for Friday, December 11, when it entertains Robert Morris-Springfield.

2009-10 Preview Hendrix College Warriors

The Hendrix College women’s basketball team went through a slew of changes throughout the off season. Coach Thad McCracken was re-introduced to the squad as their new leader and former player Krista Goss was brought in as the new assistant coach. Keeping these familiar faces around is sure to help the Warriors transition into a new era in women’s basketball.

Hendrix lost just one senior from last year’s roster and welcomes four key returners as the 2009-10 senior leaders. The squad remains on the young side with zero juniors, nine sophomores and three first years.

“We are thrilled to get the 2009-10 season rolling,” said first year head coach Thad McCracken. “The women have taken on my style of play with ease and we continue to make improvements in every practice. We will look to improve throughout the year and will ideally peak towards the end of the season and make a strong run in the conference tournament.”

Forward Christina Byler (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy), forward Lindsay Merritt (Fort Worth, Texas/Nolan Catholic H.S.), guard Amanda Morris (North Little Rock, Ark./Central Arkansas Christian H.S.) and forward Chelsey White (Dardanelle, Ark./H.S.) return as this year’s senior leaders.

Byler is coming off another standout season as she was named to the 2008-09 All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team. She ranked second in the league in free throw percentage (.847/105-124), fourth in scoring (17.1 PPG/394 total) and sixth in rebounding (7.8 RPG/180 total). Byler tallied 31 three-pointers, 30 assists and 29 steals last year.

Merritt returns as one of Hendrix’s key defenders with 10 blocks and 15 steals in 20 games played. Morris is set to run the point and returns as a strong threat from behind the arc. She led the squad with 37 three pointers (12th in SCAC) and 79 assists (11th in SCAC) last year. White will lead the team on both ends of the court through her aggressive style of play. She started in all but one game last year and averaged 8.9 PPG (231 points), tallied 109 boards, denied 18 shots (15th in SCAC) and made 31 steals.

Hendrix’s nine sophomores include guard Katy Ashley-Pauley (Conway, Ark./H.S.), forward Sam Deragowski (Springfield, Mo./Catholic H.S.), guard Samantha Devlin (Bentonville, Ark./H.S.), guard Jordan Henderson (North Little Rock, Ark./Central Arkansas Christian H.S.), center Caty Hensy (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Christian H.S.), guard Erin McKinney (Springdale, Ark./Har-Ber H.S.), guard Anna Roane (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Preparatory), guard Avery Roller (Purdy, Mo./H.S.), guard Monica Sitzer (Weiner, Ark./H.S.).The Warriors welcome first years Jessica Brunson (Vian, Okla./H.S.), Rachel Dudley (Kingwood, Texas/Northeast Christian H.S.) and Dana Nucaro (Valhalla, N.Y./H.S.) to the team.

“Our three first years will need to adjust to the college game and show the same commitment to the squad as our upperclassmen,” stated McCracken. “They all come from strong high school programs and should be a great addition to our roster.”

Hendrix opens the season with a five-game road trip. The Warriors will travel to Memphis, Tenn. for the Rhodes College Tip-Off Classic against Westminster College on Nov. 20 and Greenville College on Nov. 21. Hendrix’s first home contest will come against SCAC foe Millsaps College on Dec. 17. The Warriors’ longest home stretch is from Jan. 8 to Jan. 17 for four conference affairs. The Warriors will look to reach the postseason for the eighth straight season. This year’s SCAC Championships will be held at Millsaps College (Jackson, Miss.).

2009-10 Preview Millsaps College Majors

Coming off its first SCAC Tournament appearance since 2005-06, there is optimism for the 2009-10 season of Millsaps women’s basketball. The Millsaps roster is full of talented young players, as it returns three starters from last year’s team and adds eight freshmen and one junior college transfer. The newcomers will have needed importance, as they will be forced to help replace almost 60 percent of the scoring from a year ago due to four players lost from graduation. “The team is excited about the possibilities this season,” fourth-year head coach Mary Bolton said. “The returning players are focused on leading the team back to the SCAC Tournament by showing leadership each day.” The team is also trying to find the right niche as the season approaches and looking to build team chemistry with each practice. Bolton holds a career record of 20-54 (.270) in three seasons at the forefront of the Majors and has increased the team’s win total each season, including a career-best 10-16 mark last year. Millsaps again hopes to add to its win total as they seek their first winning season since the 1996-97 campaign. The Majors are attempting to reach the SCAC Tournament again this season and fortunately, this year's tournament will be held on their home court for the first time ever. This provides extra motivation for the players and coaches and Bolton said that “with the tournament coming to our house, we want to be there”. The Backcourt: With the departure of All-SCAC Honorable Mention selections Crystal Dickerson and Tiffany Whitmore to graduation, the Majors turn to juniors Cori Tucker and Ronda Webb to fill the void in controlling the offense. “Cori’s knowledge of the game and her leadership both on and off the court will allow her to step in and run the offense because of her relationship with her teammates,” Bolton said. Webb will be asked to play a similar role as Dickerson did last season, but be more of a threat from the perimeter as she has improved her shooting range in the off-season. Bolton also said that Webb “appears to be back to full strength after suffering from a knee problem last year”. Freshman Kristen Salmon will get a chance to step in and play significant minutes for the Majors as she brings an element of speed to the lineup. She will have the opportunity to raise the tempo of the game, especially at the defensive end. Sarah Spann, another talented freshman, also has the chance to make an immediate impact once she returns to the lineup from an injury. Junior transfer Pamela Jackson provides an instant spark on the defensive end with her pressure defense as the Majors look to continually improve this aspect of their game. Millsaps finished last season ranked second in the conference in both blocks (4.8 per game) and steals (10.9 per game). “Defense is the key and we do whatever we can to stop our opponent” said Bolton about the team’s focus on the defensive end of the court. Senior Megan Bauerle and junior Krista Clark will also provide important minutes off the bench for Millsaps in the backcourt. Freshman Elizabeth Sigafoose, Jasmine Harbor, Carra Cockrell and Lovie Love will all be fighting for playing time as they continue to develop at the collegiate level. The Frontcourt: The loss of three-time All-SCAC Honorable Mention selection LaReina Adams along with Jessica Bowie to graduation puts the Majors in a tough spot in the paint, but returning is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder from a year ago in sophomore Janice Okeke, who averaged 11.2 points per game (ranked 20th in SCAC) and 7.8 rebounds per game (7th in SCAC). “Janice has shown tremendous maturity and significant improvement from a year ago,” Bolton said. “She will continue to take on more of a leadership role with the team.” Freshman Shante Morton and Deonna Walton are also going to be asked to step in and help in the paint. “Morton comes to the team with great knowledge of the post position and should contribute more as the season progresses,” Bolton said. The Schedule: The season tips off Nov. 20 at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., as the Majors begin with three road contests before returning home for a game against Rust College Nov. 30. Millsaps will play 11 of its last 15 scheduled games in the friendly confines of The Hangar Dome including a 6-game homestand from Dec. 31 to Jan. 17 in which the Majors will play two non-conference contests and four conference games, with two coming against preseason ranked opponents in No. 18 Trinity University and No. 12 DePauw University. “Those key games will determine the character of our team and their commitment to the program,” Bolton said. “They’ll need to be both physically and mentally prepared for this tough stretch of games. The team will need to work hard over the holiday break to maintain the conditioning they are in to be prepared to compete with the top teams in the SCAC.” Follow Millsaps women's basketball all season long with play-by-play announcer Derrel Palmer by going to the home page and clicking on "Web Casts." 2009-10 Preview Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels

After an incredible four year run that saw the Stormy Petrels compile a remarkable 96-26 overall record, earn four trips to the NCAA Tournament including both a Final Four appearance (2008) and a Sweet Sixteen appearance (2009) and finishing each season with a national ranking (No. 9 in 2009), Oglethorpe University women’s basketball head coach Ron Sattele will be looking to make noise in the 2009-2010 season with an entirely new cast of characters. Oglethorpe said good-bye to two All-Americans, Katie Kulavic and Anna Findley, in the graduating class of 2009, and lost the services of SCAC stalwarts Tina Grace, Biz Richmann and Hannah Brooks as well. Gone with these former players are over 95% of Oglethorpe’s scoring and rebounding from last season. So how will coach Sattele fill the void of the vacated Petrel starters? With one of the most talented and deepest recruiting hauls in Oglethorpe women’s hoops history. Coach Sattele plans to infuse the returning talent from the 2008-2009 squad with a bevy of freshman recruits and transfers to create a winning alchemy in 2009-2010. Among the key returning players are Chelsea MacDonald, a junior guard from Rome, Georgia who possesses a deadly outside shot and Kelley Reeves, a sophomore guard from Cumming, Georgia with great ball control skills. Other key returnees to the roster from last season are senior Taymah Jones, a guard from Decatur, Georgia who missed the past two seasons with injury, junior Ari Brown, a forward rebounding specialist from Snellville, Georgia and in-state sophomore guards Jaime Maxey (Atlanta) and Rena Crossland (Hickory Flat) who each possess a superb shooting touch. The 2009-2010 roster is also chock full of freshman recruits including guard Morghan Brandon of Chicago, Illinois, guard Riley Cerone of Roswell, Georgia, guard Stephanie Owens of Buford, Georgia, guard Sarah Jones of Ellijay, Georgia, forward Kaci Palmore of Stone Mountain, Georgia, forward Sarah Giles of Marietta, Georgia, guard Mareva Bone of Marietta, Georgia and guard Megan Miles of Cordova, Tennessee. Joining the freshman recruits are transfers who include junior guard Morgan Loughrey of Cumming, Georgia, junior forward Kristin Zipkin of Canton, Georgia and sophomore guard Katie Weeks of Woodstock, Georgia. Once again, the schedule for the 2009-2010 season is loaded as always with intriguing matchups in both the non-conference slate and the SCAC fixtures. Highlighting the non-conference schedule are dates against in-state rivals Emory (Nov. 17), Agnes Scott (Dec. 2), LaGrange (Dec. 17) and Piedmont (Dec. 28). Also dotting the non-conference schedule are dates against national powerhouse programs like Manchester (Nov. 28), Thomas More (Nov. 29) and Hope College (Dec. 29). As always, the SCAC slate is loaded with high quality games including two against DePauw (Jan. 10 and Feb. 14) and Centre (Jan. 8 and Feb. 12) and a rematch of last season’s SCAC Championship game with Trinity (Jan. 15). “It should be a fun year to follow Stormy Petrel women’s basketball,” said head coach Sattele, adding, “We have a lot of young talent to infuse into our system of ‘structured chaos’ and I look forward to trying to win another conference championship with this new set of faces.”

2009-10 Preview Rhodes College Lynx

Rhodes finished the 2008-09 season with a 13-13 overall record and lost in the quarterfinals of the SCAC tournament to West Divisional Champion, Trinity University, 81-60 at Hendrix College. The Lynx return four starters and 9 letter winners and have one of the most experienced backcourts in all of Division III basketball. All-SCAC guards Becky Atnip (Greenfield, TN) and Lakeya McGill (Lexington, TN) both started all 26 games in 2008-09 and will anchor the backcourt.

Atnip has proven she can handle the point guard duties for the Lynx the past three seasons. In three seasons Atnip has scored 818 points (11.4 ppg), made 94 three point field goals and dished out 146 assists. In 2008-09 Atnip finished 11th in the SCAC in scoring, averaging a career best (13.7 ppg). Atnip also was third in the SCAC in foul shooting (84.2%) and 8th in the SCAC in three point field goal percentage (.371). “Becky is one of the most consistent players I have ever coached,” said Lynx Head Coach Matt Dean. “On a day to day basis, Becky Atnip impresses everyone on our staff with her tremendous work ethic.”

McGill returns to join Atnip in the backcourt after having a breakout campaign in 2008-09. Last season McGill started all 26 games, averaging a career best 11.2 points a game and led the Lynx with 88 assists and finished 8th in the SCAC in the assist category. In two seasons McGill has scored 501 points (10.0 ppg) and dished out 142 assists. “Lakeya has become one of the better overall players in this league. Not only is she a great defender, but she has provided us with a lift on the offensive end of the floor,” said Dean. “Off the dribble she is a very difficult player to guard.”

Senior Becca Clarin (Clarendon Hills, IL) gives Dean one of the most versatile players in the league. “We will utilize Becca at three and possibly four positions on the floor. Not only is she a big time threat from beyond the three point line, but she can defend a 1, 2, 3 and 4.” As a sophomore, Clarin averaged 7.6 points and 4.2 rebounds a contest. Clarin also led the Lynx with 40 three point field goals made in ’07-08.

In 2008-09 the Lynx lost Clarin to a season ending knee injury after 4 games. “In many respects having a healthy Becca in 09-10 is the key to our season. When she is one the floor she makes us more physical, tougher defensively and we communicate better as a team,” said Dean. “Having her back this year is a big boost to our basketball program.”

Sophomore centers Jenilee Pate (Rutherford, TN) and Brittany Looney (Memphis, TN) were both able to make an impact their initial season and combine to give the Lynx depth at the post position. Pate played in all 26 games and started 9 games in 2008-09, averaging 7.8 points and 3.6 rebounds a game. Looney started in 13 games, averaging 4.1 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. Juniors Olivia Ryan (Grey, ME) and Shelby Kramer (Germantown, TN) also gave the Lynx quality minutes in 2008-09. Ryan averaged 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds a game, playing in all 26 games. “Liv has made great strides in the off-season and we believe she will have a greater impact on the floor in 2009-10,” said Dean.

Juniors Alyssa Nucaro (Valhalla, NY) and Jessica Cowan (Olive Branch, MS) return in ’09-10 along with 4 newcomers. Sophomore Sharwil Bell (Memphis, TN) may have an immediate impact for the Lynx in 09-10. Bell played last season at D-I Elon College and will compete for a starting position at the small forward position. “Sharwil will have a huge impact on this program,”said Dean. “She is a versatile player who will be a difficult matchup for anyone in our league.”

Freshmen Sarah Womack (Germantown, TN), YaVette Dunn (Memphis, TN) and Brittany Pope (Atlanta, GA) all are expected to contribute early.

2009-10 Preview Sewanee – University of the South Tigers

The Sewanee Tigers and head coach Dickie McCarthy are looking for a renewed sense of competitiveness in 2009-10 after last season’s 4-20 record. The upcoming season will mark a change in the style of play for the Tigers. Coach McCarthy plans to install a new system which will include an up-tempo, quick scoring offense and a high pressure defense.

The Tigers must replace two dependable seniors, Rachel Miller and Anne Wills. Miller played in all 100 games during her four-year career at Sewanee. A season ending knee injury against Oglethorpe in January halted Wills’ 87-game streak.

Sewanee returns three starters from last year’s team. Senior Jamie Robinson, junior Lauren Gulley and sophomore Dani Kabbes are expected to take on major roles this season as the Tigers push to return to the upper echelon of the SCAC standings.

Last season’s leader in steals (52), senior guard Jamie Robinson will be expected to provide the spark for the newly installed full-court pressure defense. Besides her obvious statistical impact on the court, her ability to lead the team, her presence on the court and her passion for the game make her an all-around threat for Tiger opponents. Along with Robinson, fellow senior Kelly Morrison will be counted on to provide leadership for the young Tiger team, which includes five sophomores and four freshmen. The up-tempo style offense should play in the favor of the much-improved Morrison.

Lauren Gulley, the only junior on the squad, returns as a force in the low post. Last season’s second leading scorer, Gulley possesses great three-point range on her jump shot which provides serious defensive match-up problems for opponents.

The sophomore class returns five players, all of whom will be counted on heavily this season. Post player Dani Kabbes, selected honorable mention All-SCAC in 2008-09, established herself as a player to be reckoned with for some time with her play as a freshman. Returning to campus this fall in much better physical condition, Kabbes is expected to again be a force in the paint. Claire Elliott and Alex Ginsburg are expected to share time at the point guard position. Elliott got playing time there last season, but it will be a new assignment for Ginsburg. Sharpshooting guard Logan Miller will be counted on to carry a much bigger scoring load this season in an offense that will rely heavily on the 3-point shot. Virginia Zakas, a relentless defender, returns to play a key role in Sewanee’s pressing defense. Zakas is also a member of the Sewanee women’s soccer team.

Four newcomers are expected to compete for playing time early for the Tigers. Dee Bradford, Christina Johnson, Juliene Joyner and Emily Rhodes all come to Sewanee with impressive high school credentials and should add much-needed depth to the team.

The challenging 2009-10 schedule features five games against three oppponents that advanced to the NCAA tournament. SCAC rivals DePauw University and Oglethorpe University and non-conference foe Maryville College all competed in the 2009 Division III national tournament. Two games against long-time rivals Rhodes College and Centre College highlight the always difficult 16-game SCAC schedule. The Tigers open the season in Huntsville, Ala. on November 16 against Division II opponent, University of Alabama-Huntsville.

Overall Coach McCarthy is very optimistic. “Not much is expected of us this season throughout the SCAC,” says Coach McCarthy. “That’s not all bad. We like being the underdog. The players are very excited about the changes we are making and have been working very hard in the offseason. I believe this team will play to its potential and be very competitive in SCAC play.”

2009-10 Preview Southwestern University Pirates

The Pirates return eight players from last year’s squad that ended 6-19 overall. Three seniors lead the way this year “with their experience and determination to get back to the conference tournament”, says Head Coach Pam Ruder. Jessica Herbst and Narisa Trammell will be senior leaders in the backcourt while Katie Kern will aid on the block.

Herbst was a constant for the Pirates, starting and playing in all 25 games last season, averaging 26.9 minutes per game. She shot just over 30 percent from the field but was solid from the free throw line at 80 percent. Herbst was third on the team in assists with 51 and averaged 4.8 points per game.

Trammell served as point guard last season, averaging 31.8 minutes per game, and can be a threat from the perimeter. She averaged 5.6 points per game and shot 26 percent from beyond the arc last year. She was second on the team in steals with 45, proving that she is one to watch on both ends of the court.

Kern saw action in all 25 games last year, averaging just under 15 minutes per game. Her 41 percent field goal percentage was third on the team and will no doubt be an asset to the Pirates this season.

Also included in the bunch of returners is junior center Staley Mullins. Mullins led the team in blocks with 71 which also put her in the SCAC record books for the seventh most blocked shots in a season. She was also second on the team last year in points and rebounds, averaging 9.7 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game. “Staley has gained both strength and confidence in the off season,” states Coach Ruder.

Fellow junior and new addition to the Pirates is Shae Seagraves who comes to Southwestern after two seasons at the University of Memphis. She played in 26 games last season for the Tigers, averaging 11.5 minutes per game, shooting 28 percent from the field and 30 percent from three-point range. “Shae brings versatility and athleticism to our team that will spark our perimeter play,” declares Coach Ruder.

Four sophomores, Jaci Jones, Reilly Robertson, Taylin Eckols and Bronwyn Tyler, round out the returners for SU. “I look to the four sophomores to contribute significantly as they adjust to a slightly faster style of play,” says Coach Ruder. “We hope to use our height advantage as we attack the hoop aggressively and move the ball quickly.”

Southwestern adds two first-year students to the mix this season. Katelyn Bartell, a 5’8” guard from Lake Travis High School in Austin, TX, will provide added depth to the Pirate back court. “Katelyn has made an excellent transition to the college game,” reflects Coach Ruder. “She is fundamentally strong and has provided speed and consistency to our defense.”

Cheyenne Radcliff is a 5’8” guard/forward provides more flexibility in the Pirate offense. “Cheyenne is battling back after a minor injury but will be a good player for us this season.”

“We are pleased that our numbers offer a great opportunity for high repetitions and I believe that we will be a more cohesive group that will battle within this very strong SCAC conference,” states Coach Ruder. The Pirates kick off the season in two short weeks with an away game at the University of Dallas on November 15th at 2:00 pm.

2009-10 Preview Trinity University Tigers

Eight returning players from last year’s 20-8 team will lead the way during the 2009-10 season. Others took notice of this wealth of experience and ranked the Tigers in the top 20 of the NCAA Division III. Trinity was ranked No. 17 in preseason by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, and 18th by the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll. “We are very excited about our ranking,” said coach Bradley, who has amassed a four-year record of 77-31 (.713). “Our returnees should be proud that the success they had last season is receiving notice. However, I think more than anything it is motivation to work even harder this season. As a team, we are improving in all areas of the game, and we hope that this will garner more recognition in the future.” The Tigers missed the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 2007, but still produced their third 20-win season in four years. In the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament at Hendrix College at Conway, Ark., the Tigers beat Rhodes College 81-60 in the quarterfinals, and then took out DePauw University 98-80 in the semifinals. Trinity, playing in its fifth SCAC final in seven years, lost 82-65 to Oglethorpe University in the championship game. The Tigers completed the season with a 12-4 SCAC record. Trinity lost one player to graduation, and it was a substantial loss. Forward Krista Prato Matthews concluded her career with a number of milestones and honors. Prato Matthews was elected to the D3hoops.com All-South Region First Team, and was named to the All-SCAC First Team, each for the second consecutive year. It marked Prato Matthews’ third overall time on the All-SCAC Team and second on the all-region squad. An outstanding student, Prato Matthews, a biology major, with a minor in business administration, was selected for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Second Team. On the court, Prato Matthews became the all-time leading rebounder of the Tigers and the SCAC. Pulling in 309 rebounds (12.9 per game, sixth in the NCAA Division III), Prato Matthews chalked up 1,009 career rebounds. She also is Trinity’s leader in blocked shots (216 total, 43 this season) and is second in Tiger scoring (1,423 points). But this year’s edition of the Tigers will count on four outstanding returning starters. Junior guard Danielle Hubenak of San Antonio (Churchill) was elected to the All-SCAC First Team. The 5-foot-7 Hubenak placed seventh in conference scoring, with 422 points (15.1 per game). Hubenak shot 47.7 percent (142-298) from the field and was 44.1 percent (49-111) beyond the arc. The first-year players we brought in bring a great deal of athleticism.”
