BeginningsAs World War II loomed, the U.S. needed skilled craftsmen to produce arms

and ammunition for the Allied Forces. For this purpose, in 1941 Hyrum E.

Johnson brought vocational classes offered around Utah to one central Provo

location (now the site of the East Bay Business Park).

ExpansionAfter the war, the State Legislature made the school a permanent state institu-

tion and named Wilson W. Sorensen director in 1945. The next two decades

were filled with expansion; enrollment skyrocketed after Sorenson moved the

school to 1300 North University Avenue in Provo, overloading campus capaci-

ties. After several name changes, in 1967 the school became Utah Technical

College at Provo and began awarding associate degrees.

A New HomeThe demand for more space prompted college officials to purchase and begin

building on a large piece of farmland in southwest Orem adjacent to Interstate

15, the site UVSC occupies today. In 1982, J. Marvin Higbee became the

third president of the institution. During Higbee’s five years as president, the

College increased its offerings and in 1987 became Utah Valley Community

College.

A Foundation for the FutureKerry D. Romesburg was appointed president in 1988. He emphasized inter-

national education, arts and humanities and short-term training throughout

the College’s curriculum and improved the face of campus by adding and ex-

panding buildings. Through his efforts, voter-approved funding was obtained

for an 8,500-seat special events center (McKay Events Center) on campus as

well as the Wasatch Mountain Campus. Under his leadership, the institution

became Utah Valley State College in 1993 and began offering bachelor degrees.

Forging AheadIn 2003, College officials conducted a national search for a new president,

ultimately welcoming William A. Sederburg to the helm of UVSC. Sederburg

wasted no time in working with local and state officials to put in place a plan

for obtaining university status for UVSC. The feat was accomplished when

the Utah State Legislature and Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. unanimously

approved UVSC university status beginning July 1, 2008 and the new name of

Utah Valley University. With the change will come the addition of a handful

of master degrees, a new state of the art library/digital learning center and a

wealth of benefits for the local community.

Utah ValleyThe Utah Valley combined the quaintness of small town life and the conveniences of a metropolitan area to create an enticing community. From the majestic Wasatch Mountains in the east to glisten-ing Utah Lake in the west, there are countless activities from which to choose.

For the outdoor enthusiasts, there are a number of scenic trails, including the Squaw Peak Trail, Alpine Scenic Backway and Stewart Falls Trail, for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

Deer Creek Reservor, snuggled in the heart of Provo Canyon, is a favorite spot for many water lovers.

Utah is known for its natural beauty. Several National Parks, including Zion National Park and Arches National Park in Moab, are popular spots for tourists. Lake Powell, in southeast Utah and into Arizona, is a boaters paradise.

During the cold winter months you can take to the slopes to ski or snowboard on some of the world’s greatest powder. Home of the 2002 Olympics, Utah has some of the world’s most celebrated and renowned ski resorts.

Robert Redford’s Sundance Ski Resort is just a short 15-minute drive up Provo Canyon and there are also numerous resorts in Park City, just 45 through the same canyon.

Those who shy away from Mother Nature can find shelter at comedy clubs, dance clubs and over 100 restaurants. The University Mall, in Orem, along with the Shops at Riverwoods and Provo Towne Center Mall offer Utahns a complete shopping, restaurant and movie-going experience.

Honored as one of America’s most livable cities, Orem is a strong family and community environ-ment.

Athletic Facilities

The Shurian Family Activity Center is a multi-purpose athletic complex and is

home to Utah Valley University volleyball and wrestling. The 2,000 seat facility

was named after the family of Chris and Stephanie Shurian in the fall of 2006.

The 8,500 seat McKay Center opened on February 13, 1996 when a crowd of 6,213 cheered the Wolverines to an 87-81 win over Salt Lake Commu-nity College.

Since its move to NCAA Division I athletics, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have enjoyed tremendous success inside The McKay Cen-ter.

In the fall of 2008, the basketball locker room was renovated to include more space, larger lockers and a lounge and study area for coaches and play-ers.

Wolverine Softball Field, the softball diamond, located

west of the McKay Center has been the home of Wolverine

softball since 1996.

A new scoreboard was put up for the 2008 season. In 2000,

head coach Todd Fairbourne led the Wolverines to the

NJCAA title.

Page 34: 2009-10 UVU Wrestling Media Guide

Clyde Field is the home for Utah Valley women’s soccer. An added walkway

and new bleachers were installed in 2005 to accommodate fans. During the

summer of 2007, the Utah Valley athletic department began upgrading its

facility. The field now has increased seating, a level playing field with new

sod and an improved drainage system.

Brent Brown Ballpark made its debut on March 24,

2005 when the Wolverines knocked off in-state foe

Southern Utah 5-3.

The 2,500 seat stadium also has room for 2,500 more

fans on the grass berm down the third base line and

in left field. It boasts both home and visitor clubhous-

es and batting cages, a Gold’s Gym inside the stadium

and a state of the art scoreboard that make it one of

the top college baseball facilities in the nation.

The new $1.2 million Hal Wing Track & Field

will be feature seating available for 1,500 people in

bleachers and numerous grass berms will be land-

scaped on which spectators can also sit. A press box

will also be part of the project.

In the fall of 2007, the newly remodeled 24,000 square foot Wolverine Service Center opened giving UVU athletics a new facility including a 6,000 square foot academic center and computer lab with a lounge, kitchen and offices for compli-ance, academic advising and financial aid.

The Wolverine Service Center also houses new marketing offices, classrooms and additional space for equipment, athletic training and doctor offices.

Cross country, track & field, soccer and wrestling all have coaches offices and locker rooms in the new facility. The wrestling program also boasts an 8,000 square foot practice facility, locker room and coaches offices.

It’s Official!!!The Utah Valley University athletics department was notified on Tuesday, July 7 by NCAA Membership Services of its unanimous approval to lift the school’s provisional status and accept it as an official member of NCAA Division I. The move completes the University’s unprecedented move straight from NJCAA to NCAA athletics.

Full membership now permits all of UVU’s athletic teams and individual athletes to be eligible for NCAA postseason events.

“The lightning speed by which UVU moved from junior college to become an official member of NCAA Division I is a magnifi-cent tribute to the entire university,” said Utah Valley University President Matthew Holland. “We are especially proud of the administrators, coaches and student-athletes who have worked so hard and with such excellence to make this happen.”

“This is another great day for Utah Valley University and Wolver-ine Athletics. This has literally been a nine-year process with the final seven being mandated by the NCAA,” said UVU Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen. “I could not be happier for our coaches and student-athletes. They have been the heroes throughout this provisional period. We look forward to what the future will bring.”

UVU’s seven-year provisional period began with an exploratory year in 2002-03, its final season in junior college athletics. In 2003-04, teams began competing with partial Div. I schedules and a year later all of UVU’s teams were competing with full Div. I slates.

In November of 2007, an NCAA Peer Review team made up of other NCAA Div. I member administrators, made an on-campus visit to assess the progress of the school’s transition. The group’s response was overwhelmingly positive.

On May 29, 2008, UVU received notification from the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification that the school successfully completed its first NCAA certification peer review. That notification coincided with the school’s official switch to university status on July 1, 2008.

The Great West Conference

In July of 2008, Utah Valley University Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen announced the school’s new affiliation with the Great West Conference.

Expanding from a football-only conference, the Great West consists of seven all-sport schools in UVU. The conference held championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and men’s and women’s golf in 2008-09 and the full slate of conference schedules and championships begins this fall.

The schools joining UV as members of the all-sports league are Chicago State, Houston Baptist, NJIT, North Dakota, South Dakota and Texas-Pan American.

During the inaugural championship season, Utah Valley took home three Great West titles including the women’s cross country (pictured below) and both the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships.

Professional SuccessIn just its first six years as an NCAA Division I program, Utah Valley University

Athletics has had tremendous success in seeing its athletes move on to play or

compete at the highest levels in the world.

Former Wolverines Ronnie Price (men’s basketball), Kam Mickolio (baseball)

and Noelle Pikus-Pace (track & field) are three of those former Utah Valley

student athletes that competed at the D-I level that have found athletics success

at a professional and international level.

In August of 2008, Mickolio made his Major League debut for the Baltimore

Orioles, becoming the first Utah Valley baseball player to play Major League

Baseball.

Pikus-Pace became the first American woman to win a gold medal at the world

championship level when she placed first at the 2007 FIBT World Champion-

ships in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

NBA point guard Ronnie Price is entering his fifth year playing in professional

basketball’s highest league. After spending his first two season with the Sacra-

mento Kings, Price came to his adopted home to play for the Utah Jazz. After

the past two seasons in Utah, Price entered the summer as a free agent before

opting to re-sign with the Jazz for 2009.

On June 17, former Wolverine Mitch Jones made his debut after nine years

in the minors. Jones played at Utah Valley from 1997-98 prior to the school’s

transition from junior college to NCAA D-I. Jones was an NJCAA All-Amer-

ican during his time in Orem and then moved on to Arizona State, where he

was also an All-American and where he broke the Sun Devils’ single-season run

record of 27, a record that still stands.

Community InvolvementOn March 29th, 2008, Utah Valley Athletics teamed up with the

Utah Valley University Student Association for the 1st Annual

Green Fever 5k Fun Run and Walk on the campus of UVU.

The event, held to raise money for local charities, was a huge

success and this past spring, the second annual Green Fever 5k

held with $6,000 going to the Orem Rotary charities.

Over 400 participants either ran or walk the course while over

200 volunteers, headed by the Student Athlete Advisory Com-

mittee (SAAC), help make the event a success.
