NEW YORK CITY ISFrom its beginnings in a schoolhouse in

lower Manhattan, Columbia University has

grown to encompass two principal campus-

es in New York City: the historic, neoclas-

sical campus in the Morningside Heights

neighborhood and the modern Medical

Center further uptown, in Washington

Heights.

In New York, the greatest city in the world

has everything at your fingertips. A baseball

game at Yankee Stadium, a world-class

Broadway show, or just a ride around the

city where neighborhoods flow freely into

one another, New York has it all.

Today, Columbia is one of the top aca-

demic and research institutions in the world,

conducting pathbreaking research in medi-

cine, science, the arts, and the humanities.

It includes three undergraduate schools,

thirteen graduate and professional schools,

and a school of continuing education.

A member of the Ivy League, Columbia

sponsors 29 intercollegiate varsity sports

for men and women which compete at the

Division I level. Columbia has won 11 Ivy

League titles over the past three years, the

most in any three-year span in school his-

tory.

COLUMBIA - 5 - MEN’S GOLF

In 2010-11, Rich Mueller begins his sixth season as the head men’s golf coach at Columbia University and his 11th year as a head coach. Doubling as the director of golf, Mueller has quickly revamped the Lions’ golf program into a prominent force within Ivy League. In his short tenure he has been responsible for four Ivy League Championships (three men, one women), two individual Ivy League Champions, four NCAA post-season appearances and 10 All-Ivy League Golfers.

This past season saw Columbia roar to its third conference championship in as many years. Clark Granum fired a final-round 67 at the famed Baltusrol Golf Course in Springfield, N.J., and helped the Lions hold on for a three-stroke victory. Granum tied for the low score by an individual through 54 holes and was named first team All-Ivy League for the third straight season. Sophomore Brendan Doyle and first-year Michael Yiu garnered second-team accolades.

In 2009, the Lions roared back from a three-stroke deficit on the final day to claim their second straight Ivy League Championship. Coincidentally, Mueller’s team advanced to the NCAA Northeast Regional of which Columbia hosted at Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, NJ. Also successful off the course, the 2008-09 and 2009-10 Lions squad was also named a GCAA All-American Academic Team with a cumulative GPA above a 3.2.

In his highly-successful first year with Columbia, the golf program won three tournaments and Mueller was honored as the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The men’s team also posted its then-best finish at the Ivy League Championships since 1999, finishing a stroke behind Princeton for second place. In an interesting twist to the tournament’s conclusion, on the final hole, on the final day in the final pairing, Mueller, unearthed a Princeton players lost ball, which, if not found would have cost the Tigers their title. Sports Illustrated documented the gesture of sportsmanship in their May 2006 issue.

The following year, Mueller’s team succumbed to six-shot lead in the final round of the Ivy League Championship to finish third. However, Mueller coached then junior Chris Condello, to Columbia’s first-ever individual title golf title. Condello, who has since turned professional, went on later that spring to qualify for 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont.

In the 2007-08 campaign Mueller finally guided the men’s program to its first Ivy League championship since 1999 and first-ever NCAA post-season appearance. The Lions overcame a small stroke deficit in the final round to eventually win by nine strokes.

Mueller came to Columbia after spending five years as the head golf coach at New York University, where he led the program to its first two NCAA Championship appearances in 2004 and 2005. The Violets finished a best-ever 21st in 2005, after a 23rd-place finish in 2004. For his efforts, Mueller was named the University Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 2004 and was selected as the Northeast Region Coach of the Year in 2005 by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Mueller’s student-athletes have also succeeded away from the course. Thus far he has produced 11 GCAA Academic-All Americans -- including rising senior Clark Granum, Columbia’s first-ever honoree -- and six Academic All-Ivy League student-athletes.

Mueller, a Class A PGA professional, is also a member of the GCAA, USGA, and the AJGA. Additionally, he has served on the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee GCAA All-America Scholar, NCAA Division III Men’s Golf and the ECAC Division III men’s golf committees.

An active participant in the Metropolitan Section of the PGA, Mueller is currently ranked 103rd in Section’s Points and Money List. He has competed on the assistant’s tour as well as in USGA and PGA sanctioned events.

A 1999 graduate of NYU and a four-year member of the Violets’ golf team, Mueller received the team’s “Iron Horse” Award as a junior for his consistent play, and earned team MVP honors as a senior captain. He also received a master’s degree in Higher Education administration from his alma mater in January 2005.

A native of Greenlawn, N.Y., Mueller also teaches a recreational golf class. He enjoys being a member of the squash club at Columbia and is also a musician who frequently appears in New York City venues. He and his wife Serena live on Morningside Heights near Columbia’s campus.

HEAD COACH RICH MUELLER

Page 8: 2009-10 Columbia University Men's Golf Media Guide

COLUMBIA - 6 - MEN’S GOLF

My name is Rich Mueller and I am the Director of Golf & Head Men’s Golf Coach at Columbia University in New York City. I am writing because it’s possible that you may be a strong candidate for both Columbia and the golf program. It takes a special type of person to be a student-athlete at our institution; not everyone is cut out for it. As part of the Ivy League, Columbia University’s emphasis is on striking the balance between academics, athletics, and meaningful social experiences.

Men’s golf at Columbia University has a long history dating back to the 1930’s and has recently made significant strides in the Ivy League and NCAA Division I. Golf Digest, in its fall 2007 college golf guide, named Columbia University #35 in the country for best academic/athletic institutions in the sport of golf. Backing up that claim, we’ve won the Ivy League Championship in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and competed in the NCAA Regionals three consecutive years. Last year, we were also one of only 46 NCAA Division I teams in the country to garner the GCAA (Golf Coaches Association of America) All- Academic Team award. The accolade is bestowed upon golf teams whose entire squad earns an overall GPA for the academic year of 3.0 or higher. Ours was 3.34 over the 2008-09 academic year.

The typical Columbia golf recruit presents a solid GPA with AP & honors classes, a competitive SAT score, and a very strong presence in national and regional junior tournaments, as well as a desire to study in the greatest city in the world: New York City. Yes, we are located right in Manhattan. Our campus is a beautiful sanctuary surrounded by the hustle and bustle New York is so famous for. In my opinion, there is no better or unique environment to get a college degree and play Division I golf. Our graduating seniors leave with much more than just a degree; they leave with experience, extraordinary opportunities and a great sense of diversity.

By this point in the letter, you should be asking, “Where in NYC can I practice golf?” Many of the top 100 courses in America are within a 25 mile radius of Manhattan. The truth is we have no shortage of facilities both near and far, including a full size simulator and putting green located right in the campus gym. Yes, you can practice everyday in the off season. Our home outdoor facilities include: The Saint Andrews Club, The Tuxedo Club, and Randall’s Island Golf Center. Visit our facilities page on www.gocolumbialions.com/mensgolf for more information.

As one of the nation’s premiere academic research institutions we are committed to excellence in every aspect of a college student’s experience. I am personally dedicated to making my piece of your experience the most dynamic it can be. If you are interested in being part of the Columbia University golf program, I encourage you to fill out our online recruiting form by clicking here.

For more information about the golf team you may visit our website at www.GoColumbiaLions.com/MensGolf. You can also visit www.columbia.edu to view detailed listings of our academic programs. To learn more about our need-based financial aid packages and our no-loan policy, click here. I look forward to receiving your correspondence.

Here are some other things to consider about Columbia University and the golf team:

Golf related… • You can practice golf everyday in the off-season; we have an entire squash court dedicated to golf, complete with a putting green and full-size simulator • Our home golf course is 12 miles from campus, in season we take a van there everyday • If you start every tournament this fall you will miss no classes• We have priority registration for classes • We are continually ranked among the best in the Ivy League, according to Golfstat • You are fully outfitted head-to-toe with equipment • Every year we take a spring trip to a warm-weather destination • Three players in the last three years have gone on to start professional golf careers - One played in the 2007 US OPEN.• We hosted the 2009 NCAA EAST REGIONAL at Galloway National

Academically related… • We are ranked 9th in the country for undergraduate education • The “core” is revered as one of the best liberal arts curriculums in the world • We offer a variety of majors – Economics, Political Science, English, etc. • We’re located in New York City, arguably the greatest city on the planet, steps from museums, nightlife, culture and shopping• Guaranteed housing for four years • Highly competitive financial aid packages• Barack Obama graduated from Columbia

Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you!

FACILITIES

The Golf Training Center at Columbia UniversitySince 2001, Columbia Golf has enjoyed and taken advantage of having an indoor training center and team room on campus. The indoor golf center is located in Dodge Fitness Center on the third floor. It has a full-size golf simulator by Full Swing Golf, a small putting green and a locker room. The room also contains video cameras, V1 software for analyzing swings and Wi-Fi. Columbia University golfers have full exclusive access to the facility whenever the gym is open.

The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club10 Old Jackson AvenueHastings-on-the-Hudson, NY 10706

America’s oldest golf club (1888) and founding member of the USGA, Saint Andrew’s is one of golf’s venerated historical venues. Only 20 minutes drive from New York City, the membership and their guests enjoy the game in a spectacular setting and play one of the area’s best-conditioned and exciting layouts - a challenging par-71 golf course, re-designed by Jack Nicklaus in 1983.

Stewardship of the traditions and history of the ancient and honorable game is a priority at Saint Andrew’s and, with golf’s recent growth, has never been more important. Members are proud to wear the Red Jacket and offer a spirited toast to the memory of John Reid, the founder of American golf, in the room that bears his name.

The Clubhouse has recently restored along with several enhancements and renovations to the golf course.

The Tuxedo ClubWest Lake RoadTuxedo Park, New York 10987

The Tuxedo Club is a private member-owned country club located in the Ramapo Mountains, approximately 25 miles northwest of New York City. Founded in 1886, its facilities include an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones de-signed golf course, lawn tennis, court tennis, racquets, squash, platform tennis, swimming pool, boathouse, golf clubhouse and the main clubhouse, which overlooks scenic Tuxedo Lake. Our outstanding facilities along with our wonderful history, makes The Tuxedo Club one of the most unique country clubs in the United States.

Lake Isle Country Club660 White Plains RoadEastchester, NY 10709

Lake Isle CC club is located in Eastchester just twenty minutes from cam-

pus. The course offers a challenge to the team by luring them in with two short par 4’s to begin the round only to be challenged by a difficult green on the third hole and the last flat lie of the round. The terrain and the layout of the golf course requires the team to be accurate with both their tee shots and approach shots. There are several risk reward par 5’s. The course will serve as the home practice facility for the women’s golf team.

Siwanoy Country ClubPondfield RoadBronxville, NY 10708

Siwanoy CC is located twenty-five minutes from campus in Bronxville, NY. The club is a Donald Ross design and lives up to all that one would expect from the designer. The greens are difficult and unrelenting. The course is narrow and the fairways are rolling hills. The course has a long history of hosting top caliber events including the first PGA Championship tournament held in 1916.

Knickerbocker Country Club188 Knickerbocker RoadTenafly, NJ 07670

Knickerbocker Country Club is among a small group of local courses whose design is credited to legendary architect Donald J. Ross. Ross’s work can be found along the East Coast from Rhode Island to Florida, and more national championships have been played on Ross-designed courses than any other.

Strategy and deceptive simplicity are at the core of Ross’s work. Signature design features include putting surfaces that blend smoothly into the ap-proaching fairway, thoughtful and efficient course routing that utilizes natu-ral land contours, cross bunkers to capture the topped shot or create an illusion of distance, and greens that are especially difficult when played from above the hole.

Knickerbocker is a typical Ross design in another important way...it is a pleasure to play. The better golfer will find it a challenge to shoot a low score, while the average player will enjoy the fair, straight-forward style of golf of which Ross is a master.

Randall’s Island Golf CenterOne Randall Is.New York, NY 10035

Located less than two miles from Columbia University’s campus, Randall’s Island is New York City’s premier outdoor Golf Center. The 25-acre facility overlooks the East River and uptown Manhattan. Columbia’s golf team has special access to the backside of the facility an utilizes a grass-only sec-tion of the range. The facility is complete with 78 heated-hitting stalls and a 320 yard grass landing area. The facility also features and short game area and bunker.

With its city views, country club setting and college golf-friendly staff, Ran-dall’s Island Golf Center is a convenient location for Columbia’s golf pro-gram.

Spook Rock Golf Course233 Spook Rock RoadSuffern, NY 10901

Spook Rock G.C. is located in Suffern, NY. The course was designed by Francis J. Duane and opened in 1969. The par 72, 6,894 yard course has been selected as one of the top public courses in the country by Golf Digest. The course remains challenging because of the constant elevation change and well kept but difficult greens. The course has been the host of the Roar-EE Invitational each April.

The men’s and women’s golf programs at Columbia have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in recent years, winning more Ivy League champion-ships than any other Ivy school over the past three seasons. The Lions have numerous training facility options at their disposal, including a state-of-the-art indoor center right on campus!

COLUMBIA - 16 - MEN’S GOLF

With three straight Ivy League championships under his belt, Columbia director of golf and head men’s golf coach Rich Mueller has seen excellent results from his team on the links over the last three years.

Some of the top amateurs in the country have begun to take notice, and Mueller has attracted two high-caliber student-athletes to Columbia University for the fall of 2010. Jordan Lee of Tarzana, Calif., and Andrew Kim of Lake Mary, Fla., will join the Lions as first-years in 2010-11.

“While junior rankings don’t always predict how a recruit will fare in college, it’s hard to ignore where Andrew and Jordan sit among the nation’s best,” Mueller said. “There is no question their resumes speak volumes about their past and potential. Most importantly, their personalities are the right fit for our team and I look forward to helping them contribute to the successful traditions we’re establishing.”

“This is arguably the best recruiting class I’ve ever recruited in 11 years of coaching,” Mueller continues, “so naturally, I’m very excited for the future.”

Kim was named to the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Junior All-Star Team in 2007 and qualified for the prestigious United States Junior Amateur Championship in both 2008 and 2009. In the 2009 event, Kim shot a first-round 71 but narrowly missed out on the match-play portion.

At the AJGA Junior All-Star Tournament in 2007, Kim fired an opening-round 63 to establish a new course record on PGA National’s Haig Course and went on to win the event by five strokes. A four-year letterwinner at Sanford High School who has been ranked as high as 135th in the nation by Junior Golf Scoreboard, Kim was named first team all-conference as a freshman and senior and was named team MVP twice.

“Quiet, reserved and calm is how I would describe Andrew on the course,” Mueller says. “His ball-striking is excellent and his conservative approach should transition very well to college golf. I would expect him to compete for quite a bit of playing time next fall.”

Lee, whose brother Justin is a rising senior on and co-captain of Columbia’s men’s golf team, was named Delphic League MVP as a member of the Montclair Prep golf team as a senior. Lee was ranked as high as 62nd in the national rankings for all amateur golfers by Junior Golf Scoreboard, and advanced to the second round of match play at the 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in Shoal Creek, Ala.

During 2009-10, Lee finished second at the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) Mission Hills Pete Dye Challenge and closed in fifth place at the AJGA West Junior Open.

“Vocal, passionate and determined portray Jordan’s unmistakable disposition,” Mueller says. “His resume is obviously very impressive and I know he has the ability to take it low right away. Jordan’s extensive tournament experience will play an integral role in next years’ success and help him jump into the lineup early in the year.”

DR. M. DIANNE MURPHYDirector, Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical EducationWhen Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger set out to hire a new athletics director in 2004, he knew he needed someone with the vision to attain national excellence and put Columbia Athletics on par with the rest of the University, one of the greatest in the world. Five years later, there is little doubt that Dr. M. Dianne Murphy was the perfect fit for Columbia.

Now beginning her sixth full year as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education, Murphy has presided over the three most successful years in recent Columbia

Athletics history, including tangible improvements in football, men and women’s basketball, and a combined 11 Ivy League titles over the past three years – the most in any three-year span in school history.

Murphy has been Columbia University’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education since November 2004. In five years at the helm of the athletics program at Columbia, she has demonstrated the same passion and commitment to achieving excellence in intercollegiate athletics that has marked her entire career as an athletics administrator.

She has overseen a number of initiatives aimed at transforming the experience of Columbia’s more than 800 student-athletes. She has undertaken a complete strategic planning process aimed at short- and long-term excellence in athletics.

She has attracted several new high-level head coaches and administrators to the program, and spearheaded the creation of the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame, which had its inaugural ceremony on February 18, 2006. The second Athletics Hall of Fame class was inducted on October 2, 2008.

During the 2008-09 academic year, Murphy spearheaded the celebration of the Columbia-Barnard Athletic Consortium Silver Anniversary, honoring 25 years of women’s athletics at Columbia. She also initiated the Leaders for Life program, designed to provide comprehensive leadership training to student-athlete representatives from all 29 of Columbia’s varsity sports programs.

In 2006-07, women’s golf won an Ivy League title in just its fourth season as a varsity program, and women’s soccer won its first-ever Ivy League crown. The All-American Football Foundation recognized the success of the football program under Murphy, and, in March 2007, selected her as one of two recipients of the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award for excellence in football.

The Lions’ trend of success continued in 2007-08, when four Columbia teams won Ivy League championships, including the first title in nine years for men’s golf and the first in 31 years for baseball. To cap a memorable year, Murphy was named the Football Championship Subdivision Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators.

In 2008-09, men’s golf and men’s tennis continued their excellence within the Ivy League as the Lions won their second straight Ivy League title in men’s golf and the second league championship in three years in men’s tennis.

Murphy came to Columbia after six years as Director of Athletics and Recreation at the University of Denver, where she led the Pioneers’ program from NCAA Division II to one of the nation’s top Division I athletics programs. Under Murphy’s leadership, eight Denver sport programs made NCAA tournament appearances and, on four occasions, Denver teams won a national title. In 2003-04, Denver enjoyed its best season when it won the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, placed third in the NCAA Skiing Championship, and advanced to NCAA tournaments in women’s soccer, women’s tennis, and men and women’s golf.

The scope of Denver’s athletics excellence was recognized nationally through the United States Sports Academy’s Directors’ Cup, which recognized the best overall athletics programs in the nation, determined by an award of points based on teams’ finishes. The University of Denver finished among the nation’s top third of athletics programs in each of its six years since becoming a Division I member in 1998-99. In 2004, the Pioneers set a University record when they finished 58th in the Directors’ Cup, in the top 20 percent of all NCAA Division I schools.

Denver’s athletics program served as a model for national and regional academic, as well as athletics, excellence. The Pioneers gained numerous academic honors, among them the Sun Belt Conference Graduation Rate Award, which it earned for five consecutive years.

Prior to joining the University of Denver, Murphy served as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Cornell University from 1995 to 1998. She oversaw nine Division I sports, marketing and promotions, sports information and alumni and booster activities. She helped hire football and basketball coaches and was an advocate for the coaches. Cornell enhanced its equity initiatives and increased its fundraising revenues under her guidance.

From 1988 to 1995, she was the assistant athletics director at The University of Iowa, serving as the university’s lead administrator for external activities. She worked on behalf of Iowa’s coaches, and was effective in enhancing a strong compliance program.

Murphy began her athletics administrative career in 1987-88 as the assistant athletics director at Kentucky State University. From 1986 to 1988, she chaired the school’s Division of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, served as an associate professor and advised undergraduate students.

Prior to becoming an athletics administrator, Murphy coached basketball for 13 years. She was the head women’s basketball coach at Shorter College (1973-76), Florida State University (1976-79) and Eastern Kentucky University (1979-86).

Murphy was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Administrator of the Year in 2004. She chaired the NCAA Division I Basketball Issues Committee from 2002 to 2004 and currently is a member of the State Farm Wade Trophy Women’s Basketball Player of the Year Committee. She also served on the NCAA Certification and Diversity Committee and the Board of Directors for the Women’s Collegiate Sports Awards, the organization that presents the Honda Award and the Honda-Broderick Cup.

She is active in several national organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the WBCA. She was named NACWAA’s Division I (Football Championship Subdivision) National Administrator of the Year for 2007-08 and served as NACWAA’s president during 2002-03. In 2004, NACDA honored her as the General Sports Turf West Athletic Director of the Year. The All-American Football Foundation has presented her with the Senior Sports Administrator Award.

At Columbia, she helped initiate the University’s Sports Management master’s degree program. She serves on the faculty as an instructor.

Murphy holds a Ph.D. in administration and curriculum from Florida State (1980), and master’s (1973) and bachelor’s (1972) degrees from Tennessee Technological University. The Tennessee Tech Alumni Association honored her with its 2005 Distinguished Alumna Award. Florida State presented her with its ”Grad Made Good“ award at its 2005 Homecoming.

She lives in Manhattan, near the Columbia campus.
