The breath-taking highs and lows of 2008 will certainly go down in history. For our Society, it was a year of notable accomplishments, productive partnerships, and increased community engagement--all of which helped us weather the challenges created by the economic downturn.
In January, OHS launched a new state-of-the-art website that provides a compelling user interface, easy access to museum information, and new content for our audiences across the state and beyond. This, combined with greatly increased library hours, engaging exhibits, and new marketing programs helped increase admissions dramatically. Snowstorms notwithstanding, the year ended with an impressive 40% increase in admissions.
The year was notable for a series of well attended museum exhibits. After a successful opening in 2007, Lincoln: In His Own Words continued to draw crowds well into 2008. With a generous donation from history patron Shirley Kuse, OHS offered a Lincoln-themed essay contest for a $10,000 college scholarship. Our summer exhibit, Michael Curry’s Puppetry: An Out of Body
Experience, brought in kids and parents by the thousands. Toward year’s end, the Society partnered with the Portland Art Museum in a major exhibition of Columbia River Gorge photography, with a large percentage of the images coming from OHS collections. This exhibit spawned two smaller, related exhibits at the Society: Carleton Watkins’s stereographic images and James Everett Stuart’s oil paintings. Many of these images also appeared in the Oregon Public Broadcasting program The River They Saw.
In mid-December, the Society learned that the Governor’s proposed budget calls for a 65% reduction ($800,000 per year) in our state appropriation. This, coupled with the loss of nearly $400,000 in endowment income and a proposed rescission of part of our current appropriation, forced the Board of Trustees to consider major expense reductions. As we enter 2009, we know that the state budget crisis is worsening and that the Society will be forced to make significant cuts in programs and staffing. The Board is committed to exploring all options for providing continued access to the Society’s research collections and exhibits.
On behalf of the board and staff, we urge you to help us protect and build on the momentum of the past two years. Now more than ever, we need the support and enthusiasm of our members and friends to help us through difficult years of reduced state support and falling endowments. Access to the richness of our cultural heritage remains central to our community and depends on stable funding. We welcome your comments, ideas, and continued support.

2008 HighlightsFamily Friendly History
OHS recognizes the power of history to entertain and educate people of all ages. In 2008, we were excited to welcome more young people and families to the museum. Monthly free days, sponsored by the Barbara Davies Trust, attracted families from all over the region with free admission and special activities and
presentations. The exhibit, Lincoln: In His Own Words, was a hit with older children and school groups. High school students around the state entered the Abraham Lincoln Scholarship contest. The winning essay writer was awarded a $10,000 scholarship.
A Broad Collaboration
Two thousand eight was a year of partnerships for the Oregon Historical Society. Most notable was a shared effort with Oregon Public Broadcasting and the Portland Art Museum to present and promote an extraordinary collection of early photographs of the Columbia River Gorge. Capitalizing on the resources in the Society’s archives and staff expertise, OPB produced The River They Saw, a one-hour special chronicling the history of the Gorge with rarely seen images crafted by Carleton Watkins, Sarah Ladd, Benjamin Gifford, Al Monner, and many others. The Portland Art Museum exhibit, Wild Beauty: Photographs of the Columbia River Gorge, 1867 - 1957, also featured numerous photographs from the Society’s collections. Our own Carleton Watkins stereographic exhibit rounded out a wonderful showcase of some of the greatest landscape photos ever made.
OHS on the World Wide Web
Oregon history went digital in 2008. In the first part of the year, the Oregon Historical Society launched a new, state-of-the-art website, featuring a compelling home page, easier navigation, and quick access to event information, exhibit details, and memberships. The new website also incorporated the Oregon History Project, a digital resource designed for teachers, students, and other researchers. The site provides online access to a wide range of primary and secondary documents, photographs, and other ephemera, as well as lesson plans and teaching tools.
Research and Publications
In 2008, the Oregon Historical Quarterly continued to fulfill its mission to publish well-researched well-written history about Oregon and the Pacific Northwest for both scholars and a general audience. Articles in the four issues of volume 109 drew heavily on the Oregon Historical Society’s research collections as well as other sources, and scholars provided readers with meaningful interpretation of Oregon’s past. Oregon
Historical Quarterly articles considered history from across the state and addressed a wide range of topics, including cultural history, history of place-names, Native American history, photographic history, women’s history, labor history, economic history, and personal memories of subjects ranging from World War I to dramatic changes that took place in the mental health field in the twentieth century.

New ExhibitsPuppetry: An Out of Body Experience
This exclusive exhibit included imaginative work of internationally renowned Oregon puppeteer Michael Curry. The exhibit featured puppets and artifacts from the Broadway production of The Lion King, Cirque du Soleil, the Olympic opening ceremonies, and more. The interactive exhibit allowed guests to try their hand at controlling larger-than-life puppets and delighted children during its four month run.
Western Native Basketry
From their first contact with Native people of the American West, explorers, missionaries, soldiers, and settlers admired fine regional basketry. All baskets in So Prized, So Rare are from the collection of the Oregon Historical Society.
Oregon is Indian Country
This traveling exhibit tells the story of the nine federally recognized tribes of Oregon and the indigenous peoples who occupied the region for thousands of years. Oregon Is Indian Country represents a groundbreaking project, bringing Oregon tribes together to present information never before assembled in one exhibit.
Carleton Watkins: Stereoviews of the Columbia River Gorge
This exhibit displayed nearly one hundred Columbia River Gorge photographs that Watkins printed in the popular, nineteenth-century stereoscopic format-two near identical photos mounted together that, when viewed through a special lens, make the image three-dimensional. The OHS exhibit allowed visitors the unique chance to view these images as they were meant to be seen, in “3D,” letting viewers experience the formidable landscape of the Columbia River Gorge just as Carleton Watkins first experienced it 140 years ago.
Visiting Exhibits
OHS also hosted three travelling exhibits in 2008. Voices of American Farm Women, a series of 30 striking black-and-white photographs and oral histories, presented a dynamic perspective on a diverse group of women and their relationship with the land. Hungry Planet, a fascinating photo essay documenting 12
families from 12 countries, provided a thought-provoking analysis of worldwide food consumption. Original drawings, models, products, ads, photos, and rare footage were featured in Raymond Loewy: Designs for a Consumer Culture, an exhibit examining the evolution of early consumer culture.
