WelcomebacktobeautifulOrangeCountyandthe26thF-100WesternNationals!ThisyearPickupsLimitediscelebrating40yearssincethatadwasplacedinalocalclassifiednewspapercalledthePennySaver.TheclubwasonitswaytomakehistoryasbeingtheoldestF-100truckclubintheUSAandpossiblytheWORLD!

OvertheyearstheonethingthatyoucancountonischangeandPULhashaditsshareoverthepast40years.WhenIjoinedintheOrangeCountyChapterinFebruary2005,therewere8membersandnowweare40+strongandgrowing.Themostrecenthistoricchangetoourconstitutionwhichnowallowseachchaptertovoteontheinclusionofyearsrangingfrom1948to1966.thismeansthatbothF-1andF-100pickupsandpanelsarenowacceptedintotheclub.I’msurethatalongwithmember-shipincreasing,thedynamicsoftheclubwillchangeevenmore.Buttheonethingthatwillringtrueistheloveofthehobbyandfriendsyoumakealongtheway.

PartofthechangeintheclubhistoryhasbeentheF-100WesternNa-tionals.Fromvenuesitetohostchapter,theonethingthatstayedtrueistohaveagoodtimeandtalktrucks!Lastyearthebarwasraisedatthe25thanniversaryshow.Wehad177registrationswithapre-showevent“Jeff’sBeachCruise”onFriday.Itwasagoodtimeforall.Ifthisisyourfirsttimetotheshowyouareinforatreat.Fromanewvendorsrowtosomeawesometrucksyoumightnothaveseenbefore,wearelookinggood.WeareveryexcitedtohaveMr.PatFordbackthisyearalongwithTHEmajorvendorsoftheindustry,theiradsareinthisprogramsocheckthemout!

PleasebesureyoureadthearticleinthisprogramabouttheBeverly’s.It’saperfectexamplehowthisclubhelpedfamiliesbuildstrongfatherandsonrelationshipsandthatrelationshipisstillgoingstrong!

What an F-100 Life by Pat Ford Lastyear’sF-100WesternNationalswasadreamofalifetimecometrue.AfterbeingissuedawarningfromlongtimefriendsBillLee,andSteveStillwellthatitwastheWestCoast“don’tmiss”eventIwasfinallyabletoattend.HavingthepleasureofdoingpartofthevendorPAworkandstoppingmid-wayforthesurpriseofmylifebybeinggivenachartermembershipandinductedintoPickupsLimitedGang(OldestF-100ClubinAmericaImightadd)justcan’tbetopped.Idearlyrememberbackinthe70’sseeinganarticleonF-100’sthatfeaturedahalfmooncircleoftruckswiththisownerandmemberstandingnexttohistruckhopingsomedayIcouldflyordriveoutandmeetthisgroupoftruckers.InthemeantimeanotherF-100movementwastakingofflikewildfirehereontheeastcoast;aneventthatmeandmyfamilyandmanyF-100friendsliketocalltheF-100SuperNationals.

Attheendofthevendorintroduction,Steve,knowingIhadsomepelonsfromthe‘07SuperNats,askedifIwouldsharecenterstagewithoneoftheiconsoftheF-100world.IwasthrilledtoautographthemalongwithTheKing,JackRieswhofoundedSoCalPickupsandPanelsandiscreditedwithbringingtheF-100movementfromthebackstreetstoMainStreetAmericawithhisflashywayofpromotinghisbusiness.ToPatForditdidn’tgetanybetterthanthis.

Asyouknowbynowthiswasmy30thandfinalyearofpromotingmybabytheF-100SuperNationals.IthinkbacktothatveryfirsteventatChimneyRockwhenIwasthetruckerwith3trucksenteredintheshow,theonlyvendor,andbeingthepromoterforsomethingIhadnoworkingknowledgeof.Iguesswegotitrightbecauseofwhatithasbecometoday;theworld’slargestclassictruckevent.FromallovertheworldpeoplenowexchangeChristmascardsandgoonvacationtogetherbecausetheyformedfriendshipsattheSuperNats.With30years,(3decadesamountingtohalfofourlives(JanandIbothturned60yearsofagethisyearandneedtotakeabreak.)Theeventtakes6to8monthstoputtogetherwithonlyJan,Squireandmyselfmakingithappen.OurliveshavebeenthiseventsoJanandIwillcontinuetohaveastrongpresenceattheshowitselfandwillnevertotallywalkawayfromourbelovedF-100family.

In1973,IwasintheprocessofkeepingmypromisetoDale,thatifhewouldgotocollegeIwouldbuyandfinancetherestorationofacarofhischoice.IwasthinkingaMercedes280SLbutheboughta‘56smallwindow.Itwasreallyatruckthathadgottenlostonthewaytothejunkyard.Buttheheckwithit!Whatbetterwaytolearnaboutcarsthan

doingacompleterebuild.Weworkedforawhilebyourselvesandthenwereadaboutthiscarclub,PickupsLimitedinPeterson’sbookonFordvans&trucks.SowewenttoameetingattheAnaheimBowlingalley.Wecouldn’tevengetinthedooritwassocrowdedwithpeopleandtrucks,So3yearslaterwewenttoameetingalotearlierandgotseatsinsideandgottomeeteveryone.Theyhadaninterestingprogramhigh-lightedbyashortmovieonsomethingrelatedtothetrucks.Sowewentthroughtherequiredmeetingsandoutingsandwerevotedinasafamily.AfewmonthslaterDalebecameamemberonhisown.

TheClubwasveryactive.TheysponsoredatruckshowattheLAConventionCenterwhichwaswellattendedandbythistimewehadDale’struckfinishedandwereanxioustoshowOleKentuckyBlueoff.NowOleBluewasabasicrebuiltFordpickup.Alloriginal,includinganoverdrivetransmission.ButtheuniquefeatureofthistruckwastheMetalFlakepaintjob(bigflakeslikeonboats).Wehadsprayedonthemetalflakesandthen18coatsofclearDupontImrontogettheclearfinish.Tousitwastheprettiestthingever.Wedidn’tevenplace;wewerenewbiesandobviouslydidnotunderstandwhatittooktoshow.

Theclubhadsomuchtooffer.Wehadpicnics,wenttomuseumsandamusementparks,hadsafetyinspections.Ingeneralenjoyedoneanotherandourtrucks.Atmostofouroutingsweplayedsoft-ballandvolleyball,allyoungpeoplesgamesbutshucks,wewereyoungthen;andjustlikenowwesatandtalkedalot.Itwasalwaysimpressivetoseea25to30truckconvoygoingdowntheroad.Wesuregotlotsofhighfivesalutes’.MyfavoritetripsweretoReno,LakeHavasu,NorthSouthrunsandtheHighlightofourPickuptruckexperiencewasthetriptotheEasternNationals.Ateverygasstopwehadacarshow,andwhenwestoppedoverinTucumcariNM.Wewerestayingatahotelandsomelocalkidskeptcomingbyandlookingatthetrucks,soIaskedthemifIcouldhelpthemandoneofthempulledoutacoverofanoldtruckingmagazineandwantedtoknowiftheyellowtruckwasthesameastheoneonthecover.



SoIwentandgotDonStarkoutofbedandgothimtoshowthetrucktotheboys.Manthatmadetheirday.AftergettingDon’sautograph,weallwenttobed.

OnceinGatlinburgTennessee,PatFordgaveourCaliforniagroupthebestspotintheshow.Hewassoappreciativeofoureffortstocomeasagroup.(Thetruckontheleftwasmine).OnthewaybacktoCaliforniaIlostmypowersteeringsowestoppedinAshlandKentucky,atmysisterinlawshouseandreplacedit.HereisapictureofDaleandIafterwefinished.

WeevenhadfunraisingmoneyandtheonemethodIgotabiggestkickoutofwassellingfireworksonthe4thofJuly.Itinvolvedeveryoneforaweekmanningthebooth,butwedidok.Wemadeprettygoodmoneyandhadlotsoffun.Wegotsocarriedawaywithtrucksthatatonetimewehad5vehiclesinvariousstagesofconstructionone‘56,two‘55’s,one‘56Panelanda‘65IHTravelall,soyoucanseewhyDalehadtofinallymoveout,Ha.

DaleandIwenttolotsofclassesatGoldenWestCollegeandtogetherwelearnedtodoeverythingweneededtorestoreanoldcar;bodywork,mechanical

repair,welding,painting,upholstery,andelectronics.ItwasagreatwayforDaleandmetobecomecloser.DalehasturnedouttobeasgoodanoverallmechanicasIhaveeverknown,andIamproudtoseehimsharingthisknowledgewiththeclub.Havingbeenmembersforover30years,wehaveseenalotofgreatpeoplecomeandgoandeachhasbeenanotherstarinourlives.Itsogoodtoseenewlifecomingbackintotheclub.Keepitgoing!

Ifyouwerewithuslastyear,the25thAnniversaryF-100WesternNation-alswasaneventthatalmostdidnothappen.Just5shortweeksbeforetheshow,TheGypsumCanyonfirebrokeoutandalmosttookCanyonRVparkoffthemap.Thoseofyouthatarestayinginthecampgroundtodaycanstillseeremnantsofthisblazeontheedgesofthecampgroundandjustacrosstheriver.HaditnotbeenforthefastactionoftheAnaheimFireDepartmentandtheworkoftheirbravemenandwomenlikeyouseeinthephotototheright,wewouldhavebeenliterallyonthestreets.

Aftertheflamesweredoused,theAnaheimFireDepartmentsentrepresentativesoftheirHazardousMaterialsResponseTeamtotheF-100WesternNationalstoteachallofustruckersproperwaysofdisposingofthatusedoilandthoseslimyfilters.PickupsLimitedofOrangeCountywouldliketowelcometheAnaheimFireDepartmentHazMatrepresentativesagaintothisyearsevent.Theywillbeofferinginformationonproperdisposalofanyhazardousmaterialaswellasofferingfreeusedoilfilterandothercontainerstousastheirsupplieslast.

WeoftenhearthewordsHazMat,butwhatdoesthetermmeanandwhatisitthatthesepeopledoforus?TheAnaheimFireDepartment’sHazMatTeamisdesignedtoprovidespecializedemergencyresponseofbothper-sonnelandequipmenttoprotectthepublic,theenvironmentandproperty.Thiswouldincludeincidentsinvolvingarelease,orpotentialreleaseofhazardousmaterialsthatpresentaphysical,biological,radiologicalorhealthhazardtothecommunity.TheAnaheimHazMatTeamisoneoffourHazMatTeamsinOrangeCountythatpro-vides24hours-a-daystaffingforemergencyresponses.

TheAnaheimHazMatTeam’sresponseareaincludestheCityofAnaheim,aswellasallofnorthOrangeCounty.TheAnaheimHazMatTeamiscomprisedof21members(sevenpershift)whoareassignedrolesasdual-func-tioningpersonnel.TeammembersarestationedatAnaheim’sRiverdaleFireStationandprimarilyrespondasfirefightersonanEngineorTruckCompany.

WhenahazardousmaterialsincidentoccurstheHazMatTeamMembersrespondtotheincidentonaspe-ciallydesignedHazardousMaterialsResponseUnit.TheHazMatUnitisamulti-functioningpieceofapparatus,whichhasspecializedequipment,includingcommunicationsandinformationgatheringelectronics,airmonitoringdevices,unknown-chemicalanalysismaterials,andafullcomplimentoftoolsnecessarytoaffectanentryintoahazardousatmosphere.TheHazMatUnitisalsodispatchedtoincidents,suchasfires,asalighttowerandairbottlefillingstation.

Specializedequipmentandresponsibilitiesrequirespecializedtraining.EachmemberoftheHazMatTeamre-ceivesaninitial160hoursofclassroomandmanipulativetraining.ThisqualifiesthemasaCaliforniaStateCerti-fiedHazMatTechnician.Thecurriculumincludeschemistry,airsampling,collectingandanalyzingofunknownmaterials,radioactivematerials,andtechnicalknowledgeofthehardwarenecessarytomitigateanemergency.AfterCertificationadditionalspecializedtrainingbeginsforincidentssuchas,clandestinedruglabs,NBC(nucle-ar,biological,chemical)terrorismincidents,andconfinedspacerescues.

TheAnaheimHazMatTeamhasrespondedtoawiderangeofemergencysituations:tankerrollovers,trainderailments,hydrogencyanide,tetraethyllead,methylchloride,pesticidereleases,druglabs,andillegaldump-ingjusttonameafew.TheAnaheimHazMathasbeenprotectingandservingthecommunityofAnaheimand

OrangeCountyforover15years.

UnfortunatellybrushfiresandthehandlingofHazardousmaterialshasbecomeawayoflifeforallofus.AsIamwritingthisstory,abrushfireburnsintheMt.Baldyareawhichiswithin50milesofourshowsite.ThemembersoftheAnaheimFireDepartmentaswellasotheragencieswhereveryouarefromarededicatedtoprotectingusinev-erydaylife.Takeafewminutesandsaythankstothemforbeingthereforuswhenweneedthem.Theymustallbetruckersatheart,afterallwhatcanbemorecoolthanafiretruck?

Why Pickups Limited of Orange County?InApril1968someoneplacedanadvertisementinathrowawaypapercalledthePenny-Saver.Theaddsolicitedownersof1953-1956Fordpickuptruckswhomightbeinterestedinmeetingotherowners.AfewpavementpoundersansweredtheadandsobeganPickupsLimited.TheOrangeCountychapteriswhereitallstartedandisnowtheoldestofsevenchaptersofvintageF-100’s.

Theoriginalmembershipwentthroughgrowingpainsandsomechewin’andjawin’overwhatyeartruckstoincludeandforsomecrazyreasonthatdidn’tincludepaneltrucks.Itseemsthatsomeguysjustaren’tinfavoroffullbodiedbeau-tieswithplumpandroundedrearends.NeedlesstosaythepanelhadtowaitafewyearstobeappreciatedandforentryintotheF-100truckfamily.TheOrangeCountychaptercur-rentlyincludes1948through1956pickupsincludinglongandflatbedtrucksandpanels.

Wildandcrazymaynotbethebestwaytodescribeourmanyclubactivities,neverthelessfunwithacapitol‘F’istheclubmottoandIbelievethatistheprimaryreasonforourmembershiptobeatit’shighestinmanyamoon.Maybeit’sbecausewedon’tputanydemandsonthemembershipormaybeit’sourmotleyassem-blageofgeargrinders,havingeverythingfromunderconstructiontohighlymodifiedandshowtrucksthatmakesourclubsomuchfuntobeapartof.

ThecurrentPresident,JeffHornsbyisateambuilderwhohasswelledtheranksoftheclubandassembledaneagergroupthatbroughtyouthe2007WesternNationals.Idon’tknowifyouattended,butifyoudidthereisnoexplanationnecessary.Simplystated,itwasthebestallFordtruckshowwestoftheMississippi.MemberslikeChrisTraverseditingpublishingapremierebimonthlynewsletter,workingourWEBsiteandproducingakickbuttshowbro-chure.SteveStillwell,awellknowneditorandpublisherofseveralcarandtruckmagazines,steppeduptotheplateandcameupwithnoneotherthanPatFordtoemceethingsandalongwithChrisandothershehasproducedeyepoppingraffleanddrawingprizes.

IknewthatRichMillerhadanoverabundanceoftrucksandwasthinkingofpartingwithhisgoldcolored1956Fordsmallwindow.TymetupwithRich,drovethetruckandquicklypurchasedit.Isawitparkedatourshippingdock,lookeditover,starteditandtookitforabriefdrive.Tylikedthetruck,buttoldmetherewasalotofplayinthesteeringandtheridewasabitontheroughside.Tyadded,“Steve,Iwouldliketodrivethe’56totheSEMAShowinLasVegas…ontheDrivenDirtyTour.”Myreplywas,“Sure,whatyear?”

IcalledRobMacGregorofNoLimitEngineeringandpoppedthequestionofhowlongwouldittaketoinstallaMustangIIfrontclipand9-inchFordrearend.Idon’tknowwhatrearendgearratiowasinthatstockhousing,butitwasreallywindingthat289V-8tightforfreewayspeeds.Robwantedthetruckinacoupleofweeks,soImadetheappointmenttodriveittoSanBerdo.Thehighlightofmydrivewasstoppingroadsidetofindasticktouseasacruisecontrolasthegaspedalanglewaskillingmyrightankle.

Now,aboutthatlearningpart;RobhadmetakethetruckovertoNoLimitFabrication,ametalfabricationschoolwherestudentsaretaughtthefineartofmetalfab,allformsofweld-ing,metalmathandtheartofrodfabrication.Thetruckwaspositionedatoplargestandsandtheframeleveled.Thebedandfrontsheetmetalwereremoved,followedbytheengineandtransmission.IwasinthemiddleofphotodocumentingthestagesofthedisassemblyofthetruckwhenRobcalledmeovertocheckoutthepassengersideoftheframe.Point-ingtotheframebracketthatsupportsthepassengersideofthecab,Robtoldmethattherewasaseriousframeproblembecausethecabwassittingontheframe,andtherewassupposedtobeaone-inchgap!Acloserinspectionrevealedcrackswhichinitiatedatthelargeholeintheframejustfor-wardofthecabandextendingoutinseveraldirections.

Theproblemwascausedbysomeonehavingremovedtheoriginaltransmissionmemberandattachingacrosstubewhichmountedonlytothebottomflangeoftheframe.Thisallowedtheframetoflex,crackanddroop.Thecurewastojackuptheframecabmountswhilesimultaneouslyheatingtheframerails.Robjacked,pushed,weldedthecracksandeven-tuallyleveledtheframerailswhileestablishingfactoryspecs.TubingwasthenweldedtotheframetoholditinplaceuntiltheMustangIIcrossmemberwaspermanentlyinstalled.Ifyouhaveremovedtheoriginaltransmissionframememberandyourhooddoesn’tclosewithadecentgap,betterhavesomeoneinspectyourframetoseeifyouhavedevelopedasimilarchassisfailure!
