Message from the Founder

In the non-profit business, we are often so focused on the year ahead, it can be difficult to pause and reflect on a year passed. As we all can easily recall, 2008 was an eventful year. We got a new president; USA garnered nine gold metals in the summer Olympics; and the word “recession” was officially used to define the economic challenges sending waves through every company and household in America.

Despite these financial difficulties, Dream Foundation was able to endure a tough year, thanks to a loyal supporter base who kept us afloat and a dedicated staff who, day by day – without fuss or fanfare – responded to the requests of individuals and their families facing tragic loss.

Still, when thinking about how best to define 2008, it would be with a number -- 1315 to be exact. 1315 represents a memorial garden for Veronica; deep-sea fishing for Jeffery; a lift chair for Stanford, a published story for Kathleen; and a special trip to Los Angeles for our celebrated Dream Ambassador, Jenni. These are the dreams that define 2008 for Dream Foundation, as these are the dreamers who inspire us to continue our work in the years ahead.

I am thankful and deeply touched by our Dream Foundation supporters who, year by year, give generously to making dreams come true. They are individuals, sponsor companies, foundations and in-kind donors who truly understand the profound meaning of a final wish come true.

Dream Stories

Ronald, 70, of New York City had been a dancer and actor and always on the move. Ill with prostate cancer he had not left his apartment for over two years. Ronald wanted to experience the streets and vitality of the city he loved. His dream came true when we sent him a power chair. An hour later Ronald was outdoors, in the rain! Ronald said “It’s been a long time since I felt rain on my face. Thank you for such a beautiful gift. I am now able to get out into the world again.”

Ken, age 53, of was the father of 9 children, a loving husband and a good friend to many in his hometown of Boise, Idaho. Before he was

diagnosed with kidney cancer Ken and his wife had saved for years for a family vacation at

Disneyland. When the cancer depleted those funds the trip seemed out of reach. With family help Ken contacted Dream Foundation and we

sent everyone to Disneyland. Ken wrote “Thank you for the time of my life. I was truly at the

happiest place on earth.”

Francis, 74, was in hospice care in her hometown of Westminster, Colorado, suffering chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. Baseball had always been a joy for Francis and she had fond memories of attending Colorado Rockies games. Her wish to share one more game with her family came true and Francis’ daughter wrote: “ Our Mom had the best time. To see her smiling with the sun on her face was amazing. Thank you for the joy that filled our day.”

Ancillary Programs

The Toy Program was initiated shortly after Dream Foundation was founded when it was discovered that 45% of dream recipients are parents of young children who are dealing with the severe illness and impending loss of a parent. Young children receive new, age-appropriate toys and teens receive books, CD’s and cosmetics. We welcome new toy donations and items appropriate for teen boys and girls. The gifts we send bring some good feelings and a bit of cheer to children struggling with a very difficult life situation. The 2008 Toy Program was sponsored by Herb & Bui Simon, Quentin Wahl and a local foundation.

The Flower Empower Program is special to Dream Foundation’s hometown of Santa Barbara, California and is our way of saying thank you to the city where, each Saturday of the year, a group of volunteers meets in the early morning hours and begin to make 40-50 beautiful flower bouquets. Using their own vehicles, the volunteers then deliver the bouquets to very ill people at local hospitals, hospices, care centers and private homes in the community along with cards created by local youth groups, chocolates and cookies.

About Dream Foundation

The Mission of Dream Foundation is to enhance the quality of life of individuals and their families who are battling life-threatening illness.

The Dream Program is the primary program of Dream Foundation. It was created in 1994 by Thomas Rollerson in Santa Barbara. Since that time Dream Foundation has granted 1315 final requests to adults, age 18 and over, living in every state of the union. Referrals come from our hospice partners, hospitals, doctors, social workers and via the website www.dreamfoundation.org

Dream Foundation receives no government funding and relies on private gifts, corporate support, events and foundation grants in order to continue its dream granting work.
