Dear friends,

It is a trite expression, but nevertheless true: Spartanburg Methodist College is a caring community that is united in our common mission to educate and prepare students for lifelong learning in an attitude of service to others. Everything we do centers on our commitment to enhance student learning. Just as it takes a community to raise a child, it takes an aca-demic community to develop a student during their enrollment at SMC. The theme for SMC athletics in 2008-2009 is simple and supports the notion that we are a diverse community united with a common pur-pose: “Pioneers United!”

We offer intercollegiate athletics in nine different sports, seven teams for women and seven for men. We offer Women’s teams in Soccer, Basketball, Tennis, Golf, Volleyball, Cross Country, and Softball. We offer Men’s teams in Soccer, Basketball, Tennis, Golf, Cross Country, Wrestling, and Baseball. Our student-athletes on each team are united toward the common goal of winning contests against our opponents. They are also united in their efforts to win Regional, Divisional, and National Championships. Our 14 intercollegiate athletic teams are unique and distinct, yet they are united in representing the best of the College in the classroom, on campus, in their respective games/matches, and in the community. I am truly proud of the commitment of our outstanding coaches and staff to winning. I am even more proud of their commitment to develop a solid character in their students.

Although we do not claim to be a “university,” the meaning of that word applies to Spartanburg Methodist College: “University” means achieving unity (uni…) in diversity (…versity). We are a very diverse academic community in that we serve students who come from differing backgrounds in their religious commitments, racial composition, world view, national origin, and socio-economic status. We celebrate our unique differences just as we celebrate our commonality, for we are all children of God. Perhaps the most important factor that unites us is our devotion to our Creator who gave us the gift of life with diverse talents and abilities.

Please join our faculty and staff, our coaches and assistant coaches, and our administrative staff as we gather to cheer for our teams as they compete against colleges in Region X of the NJCAA. I am convinced that you will enjoy the events, celebrate with us our victories, and grow from lessons learned when we lose. Regardless of our wins and losses, however, we are “Pioneers United” as we support the development of our student-athletes at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Go Pioneers!

Making a Difference in Just Two Years The first two years after high school graduation are times

of self-exploration and exciting discovery. For most of us, the decisions during those two years are crucial ones guiding the rest of our lives. Who am I? What do I want to do with my life? What do I want to study?

SMC provides a great place to make those two years count. For nearly a century, we've helped thousands answer those crucial questions and make life-chang-ing discoveries.

Tools to Discover SMC offers a full liberal arts academic curriculum. Instead

of huge lecture halls where classes are taught by graduate assistants, SMC offers a student-faculty ratio of about 21-1. Our students and faculty get to know one another.

Discover the Leader in Yourself You don't have to wait until your junior or senior year to

become a team captain, editor of the school newspaper, or leader of a student organization. Your two-year experience puts you on the fast track, allowing you to become leaders without competition from juniors and seniors.

Dicover the joy of service There's a lot to discover about yourself and your world.

SMC gives you the place and the time to do so. Our students reach out to others in the community through a variety of ser-vice learning opportunities. Others benefit, and so do you.

More than 90 percent of our graduates transfer to other insti-tutions of higher learning. Hopefully they are better-prepared because they took time to make some important discoveries in their freshman and sophomore years at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Why Spartanburg Methodist College? Because the first two years of college are the most impor-

tant years in college.

FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to Spartanburg Methodist College, “Home of the Pioneers”! Spartanburg Methodist College has a strong history of excellence in athletics. SMC has over 250 Student Athletes that compete on 14 Athletic Teams as well as Cheer and Dance Squads. The SMC coaching

staff is experienced and dedicated to their students and their sport, leading our teams to excellence in all areas. Our mission is to enhance Academics, Values, Athletics, Commitment, and Citizenship for all student athletes.

SMC competes at the Division 1 level of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). As a two-year institution, SMC athletes have the opportunity to be leaders as soon as they arrive on campus both in the playing arena, around campus and in our community. Last year the SMC Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Softball, Wrestling and Cross Country represented SMC at the NJCAA National and District tournaments. SMC hosted the 2007 NJCAA Half Marathon Classic and our own Rebecca Prichard won the event and became SMC’s first ever individual National Champion.

Many of SMC’s student athletes have continued their athletic participation and education at four-year colleges and universities such as Francis Marion, Southern Wesleyan, Auburn University, USC Columbia and USC Upstate. SMC athletes are also commit-ted to the Spartanburg community, which is demonstrated in the thousands of service and volunteer hours they log each year with area schools and organizations.

As the only two-year, private residential college in South Carolina, SMC offers a unique opportunity for students to excel in academics and athletics. SMC’s focus is excellence in both areas: athletics and academics, to prepare our student athletes to move on to their junior and senior years at four-year institutions.

Our motto for 2008-09 is “Pioneers United”. Our focus scripture is I Corinthians 12:12 which teaches us that the whole body works together to be successful. Coaches, Athletes, Administrators and Faculty make up the team at SMC and being united will help all of us be successful. SMC strives for excellence for its student athletes and it is our goal this year for the Pioneers to be united on academics, athletics, and life.

On the playing field or in preparation for a career, SMC is dedicated to the success of it students! “Pioneers United!”

Before coming to SMC, Williams played four years for the Lancaster High School Baseball Team.

Williams is the son of Steve Wil-liams, Baseball Coach at Lancast-er High School, and Jan Williams. Williams hopes to one day become a college head baseball coach.

East Carolina and Tennessee (just to name a few). Numerous others continued their careers at the NCAA Division II level.

Prior to his coaching career, Wal-lace was a standout player himself. A former second round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals, he played pro-fessionally for seven years. This included a two-year stint in Italy, where he led the league in hitting and homeruns. While playing in the States, Wallace was named an All-Star for both the Appalachian and Florida State leagues and also was team MVP for the 1983 St. Peters-burg Cardinals. This continued a streak of team MVP awards that in-cluded two Lancaster High School, one Post 31 American Legion, one Baptist College and two Wofford

College seasons. It was at Wofford where Wallace attracted profession-al scouts.

During his two seasons there he posted records for career batting av-erage (.456) and longest consecu-tive game hitting streak (37). He also led NAIA District 6 and the state of South Carolina in hitting as a sopho-more. For his efforts, Wallace was inducted into Wofford’s Hall of Fame in 2000.

Wallace returned to Wofford after his playing career and completed his B.A. in Sociology. He then earned an M.A. in Physical Education from Gardner-Webb University. He and his wife of twenty-five years, Beth, have three children- Jacob,21 (mem-ber of Francis Marion squad); Amy Kate,19; and Mary Grace 17.

Men’s Basketball

Coach

Rob Burke enters his fifth season as head coach of the SMC Men’s basketball team in the 2008-2009 season.

During his career at SMC, Burke has established the Pioneers as a Region X contender, posting a 79-46 overall record. In the 2005-2006 season his team posted 22 wins; and in 2007-2008 posted 24.

In just his second season at SMC, Burke’s Pioneers played for the Re-gion X title.

Burke has a very diversified background. He had an outstand-ing career as a point guard playing for his father Bob Burke at Chowan College. His father has coached at every college level as well as having coached three years in the NBA with the Portland Trailblzaers.

Coach Rob Burke previously coached as an assistant at Division II Limestone College and Division I Campbell University.

Before both of those stops, Burke played and coached in Ireland for the County Clar Jets, who competed at the super-league level.

Burke, whose teams at SMC have averaged 20 wins a season, has developed an outstanding reputa-tion as a teacher of the game and as a recruiter throughout the state of South Carolina, recently signing five South Carolina All-Stars.

Burke received his Bachelors in Sports Management from Chowan College and is pursuing a Master of Education degree from Campbell University. He and wife Neilly live in Spartanburg and have two daugh-ters, Mina and Marissa.

DIRECTOR OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS

Justin Rademacher enters into his second season as Director of Bas-

JUSTIN RADEMACHER

ketball Operations for Spartanburg Methodist College. Rademacher came to SMC last year from Wade Hampton High School in Greenville, SC where he was responsible for several managerial duties such as taking stats and videotaping during his four years there.

Last year Coach Burke presented him with challenges such as prepar-ing equipment for practices, running the clock during practice, running a couple of team lifts, game day prepa-

ration, laundry for the team, packing for tournaments and away games, taking stats during the game, scout-ing potential players in his home town, delivering stats to the Region Director Dean Myrick, and distribut-ing game day packets.

This year, Rademacher will be presented with the same challenges as well new challenges such as breaking down film, inventory re-sponsibility and helping with practice. Rademacher hopes to be a big help

in the Pioneers success this season. Rademacher has a huge heart for basketball and is really passionate about his work. He has the support of his family all the way.

Rademacher will receive his As-sociates in Arts degree in the spring of 2009.

He plans to transfer on to a four year institution of higher learning to complete his bachelor degree in Ed-ucation, and then pursue a Masters in Special Education.

Women’s Basketball

Coach

Ralph Patin III enters his third year as head coach of the SMC Women’s Basketball team in the 2008/2009 season. In his first two seasons, Patin compiled an overall record of 33-27 and 26-8 in region play. His teams competed in the Region X Championship both years and won the 2008 Region title. He has pro-duced three 1st Team All-Region players, an NJCAA All-American, and the 2008 Region X Player of the Year. All of his upperclassmen have moved on to other schools as either athletes or students.

For Patin, whose father coached basketball and football in his native Louisiana, coaching is a natural pro-gression. Patin’s father was also his high school coach at Lutcher High School in Lutcher, LA.

Prior to being named head coach at SMC, Patin coached the varsity women’s basketball team at Ridge View High School in Columbia. Before that, he coached at C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy and coached and played while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He also worked with several AAU organiza-tions, both male and female. Patin credits his father (Ralph Jr.) as being influential in his decision to become a coach, and his mother (Doris) for his unwavering faith in God and fam-ily.

After high school, Patin attended college at Jackson State Univer-sity in Jackson, MS. He earned an associate’s degree from Campbell University (Buies Creek, NC), a bachelor’s degree from Excelsior

College (Albany, NY), and a mas-ter’s degree from Cambridge Col-lege (Boston, MA). He is married to Nalinee Patin, and they have two children: a son, Jamal, 15, and a daughter, Jasmine, 10.

“Discipline, Respect, and Loy-alty are the cornerstones of this program“ says Patin, who wants

RALPH PATIN (continued)

to lead the Lady Pioneers to a winning season every year, but also wants his players to be just as successful academically. “A consistent graduation rate is our aim,” he adds.

Patin’s life motto is, “I don’t want my last day to be a bad day, so I make everyday a good day”.

DIRECTOR OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS

TRINA GILLIAM

Trina Gilliam has recently joined the Lady Pioneers program as Director of Women’s Basketball Operations, but the Spartanburg native is not new to Spartanburg Methodist College. Gilliam has been employed at the college for seven years and is currently the Assistant Director of Residence Life. She is also a Resident Hall Director and the Yearbook Advi-sor.

Gilliam is responsible for the administrative aspect of the pro-gram. Her list of responsibilities includes assisting with the team’s

budget, fundraising, supervising the team’s student managers, and monitors the players’ academic progress. Gilliam will assist with transportation and other adminis-trative duties required of the pro-gram.

Gilliam earned her degree in business management from South-ern Wesleyan University in 2000. She comes to the program with three years of management experi-ence and six years supervising stu-dents. She also served six years in the U.S. Army Reserves.

In her spare time, Gilliam enjoys riding her motorcycle and spending time with family and friends.

“I am very happy to have Trina assisting me with the administra-tive responsibilities of the pro-gram,” Patin said. “Her experience and knowledge of the college will allow me to focus more on the responsibilities on the court. She is very committed to Spartanburg Methodist College and its mission, and I know that she will bring that same commitment to the women’s basketball program.”

Stephanie Van Inwagen is in her first season as assistant coach of the Lady Pioneers golf team. She recently relocated to Woodruff, SC from Torrington, CT at the end of June 2008 so that she would be able to enjoy the warmer weather and most importantly, enable her to pursue her passion, the game of golf.

For 15 years, Stephanie owned and operated StephCo Furniture R&R, an antique restoration and fur-niture repair business. She has al-ways had a talent and vision of how

a piece of wood furniture (whether antique or more recent vintage) should look. Her other interests in-clude music and piano.

Stephanie grew up in Needham, MA, has her High School Diploma and a BA Degree in Economics from Windham College. During those days, she became very active in the women’s gymnastics programs and softball. Although golf did not enter Stephanie’s life until she was 42 years old, her athletic ability, her competitive spirit, her desire to learn all aspects of the game, 6 summers of lessons and a strict regimen of practice have developed her game to a competitive level.

In Connecticut, Stephanie was a member of Greenwoods Coun-try Club, a private course in Win-chester, CT from 2003 through 2007, where she was the Women’s Club Champion all 5 years. She was also President of the Women’s Club at Canton Golf Club and Wom-en’s Club Champion there from 1999 to 2003. Stephanie is very in-terested in promoting women’s golf and began helping other women with instruction 3 years ago. She is currently giving private golf lessons to women who want to either learn as a beginner or to improve their game.

CORY PETERSCory Peters is in his first year as

an athletic trainer at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Peters, 31, received his under-graduate degree Athletic Training and Sports Medicine from Mercy-hurst College and has a Master’s in Exercise and Sports Science from Ithaca College.

He worked with the football and lacrosse programs at Cornell Uni-versity for two years while attending Ithaca College. Peters worked for seven years with Clemson Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation – with four years spent at D.W. Daniel High School and other surround-ing schools as an outreach athletic trainer and three years as a clinical athletic trainer.

He holds national and state licen-sure in Athletic Training.

Peters is an avid athlete and en-joys golf, wakeboarding, and snow-boarding. He attributes his interest in sports medicine to his love of sports as a youth.

“When I saw people running out onto the fields to help the athletes, I decided that’s what I want to do. It’s a hybrid of both sports and medicine – and I knew I would enjoy it,” says Peters.

Peters, an Upstate New York na-tive, currently lives in Spartanburg.

and one year working with local high schools.

She holds national and state li-censure in Athletic Training.

In her spare time, she enjoys re-laxing on the lake, spending time with family and friends, and playing with her dog Baila.

A key component of athletic performance is sports medi-cine. The training staff and facilities at SMC offer student athletes a variety of resources for keeping fit and maximizing their performance.

The athletic training office at Spartanburg Methodist College is staffed by two cer-tified athletic trainers whose services are provided to the college through Spartanburg Regional Sports Medicine.
