A NOTE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

This publication is dedicated to those athletes who contributed to Avon’s many successes this year. In particular, I would like to thank the seniors who have left such a lasting mark on our athletic program. Your efforts have made an outstanding contribution to Avon’s rich athletic tradition.

The 2008-2009 year was full of exceptional team performances and individual accomplishments and I hope that you will enjoy the coaches’ season summaries. Some of our teams won league championships and several individuals earned All-League, All-State, and even All-New England accolades, and we are extremely proud of these accomplishments. However, I am convinced that it is the friendships made, and the many lessons learned through competition, that will endure the longest. Avon believes deeply in the educational value of athletics; Plato once said, “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” I only wish I had a few more hours to share with the class of 2009!

VARSITY FOOTBALLThe varsity football team finished the 2008

season with a record of 3 wins and 5 losses. Captains Corey Cheyne ’09, Matt Lauro ’09, and Kinley Mehra ’09 led this young and inexperienced team both on and off the field, and with devotion to each of their teammates and to the game of football.

The season opened with a 35-14 win over the Rhinos of Taft in a battle that was much closer than the score indicated. Taft led for the entire first half, taking advantage of a host of Avon mistakes. A kickoff return from Bronson Kelley ’11 at the end of the second quarter, however, led to Avon’s first score of the game. After a two point conversion, the Winged Beavers trailed at the half 14-8, but momentum was on their side. After dominating the third quarter in time of possession, the Avon just couldn’t find a way to punch the ball into the end zone. In the fourth quarter, however, Avon was truly firing on all cylinders, ultimately scoring 27 points on touchdowns from Mike Hermann ’09, Marek Laco ’09, Andrew Cummings ’10, Cheyne, and Sam Marvin ’10.

Unfortunately the victory was followed by losses to Salisbury, Trinity-Pawling, and Kent, until Avon rebounded with a 30-21 defeat of Loomis Chaffee on the road. After losing to Hotchkiss and Deerfield, the Winged Beavers closed out the year with a win over Northfield Mount Hermon, defeating the Hoggers 18-6 in Avon’s best-played game of the season. Touchdowns from Cheyne, Cummings, and Hermann, in addition to many strong defensive performances, gave Avon the edge it needed to finish up the season with a strong win.

The seniors on this year’s team were incredibly hard-working, a cohesive unit who approached each practice with determination and with a willingness to sacrifice their personal wants for the good of the team. They demonstrated a will to win, good sportsmanship, and respect for their opponents. The future looks bright with the return of many talented underclassmen and the addition of many members of our talented junior varsity and thirds football squads.

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL


JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALLThe Junior Varsity Football team finished its season

with four wins and six losses. However, they did end their season in grand fashion by winning their last three games, outscoring their opponents by a margin of 121 to 6. Leading the way for the Winged Beavers offensively was Makoa Kaleo with 7 touchdowns, while Lincoln Young and Michael Galper each had five. Connor Doyle was also very instrumental by throwing several touchdown passes to a variety of receivers. The offensive line, consisting of Tyler Doyle, Andrew Campbell, Darnell Davis, and Matt Brown, did an excellent job pushing back the defensive line all season.

The defense was led by Mike Lee, who had seven sacks, Adam Spracklin, who had four interceptions and three fumble recoveries, and Makoa Kaleo, who had four fumble recoveries. Kieran Morris and Matt Brown played solidly at their defensive end positions and Dan McDougall was the play-caller in the secondary. These players and many more should have a positive impact on the varsity squad next fall.

THIRDS FOOTBALLThe 2008 thirds football team had a good season.

The team battled adversity throughout the year in the form of injuries and still managed to have a very successful season.

The season began on a sour note when one of the team’s best linemen, Liam Cardon ’12, was lost to a broken ankle on the first play from scrimmage versus rival Salisbury. Despite a valiant effort that saw Avon on the Salisbury goal line on the final play of the game, with a chance to tie, the Winged Beavers fell prey to the Knights. The second game of the year did not go much better as once again, a failure to score from in close kept the Winged Beavers from defeating the Suffield JV.

The first win of the season came on Parents Weekend versus Avon High School. Alex Michell ’12 intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for a TD early in the first quarter. After the Falcons tied the score, Dylan Shamburger ’12 put the Winged Beavers ahead to stay with a 40-yard TD run. Sam Rosichan ’12 connected with Pedro Vega ’12 for another TD on a 4th and 10 play just before halftime to give AOF a little bit of a cushion. In the second half, Shamburger was dominant, in racking up two more TD’s and over 200 all-purpose yards in the 34-6 victory.

The next game was another frustrating offensive day. Having lost stalwart offensive lineman/defensive end Connor Latz ’12 to injury earlier in the week in practice, the offense had trouble finding a rhythm. The team failed to score once again, and despite a valiant defensive effort, and lost to Taft JV 6-0. The annual tilt with the Brunswick Freshman Team, this year in Greenwich, featured more heroics from

Shamburger. He scored on a 60-yard TD run on the second play from scrimmage. The team never looked back from there, finishing with a 26-14 victory over the Bruins.

The team next made the journey to Eaglebrook. Much of the first half was a frustrating experience for both the offense and the defense, as turnovers and big plays helped Eaglebrook jump out to a 14-0 lead. Just before halftime, the “Air Avon” passing attack came to life as Rosichan was able to connect with Mitchell Leeds ’12 and Vega on passes of 40 and 45 yards to move the Winged Beavers from inside their own 10 to the Eaglebrook red zone in just two plays. Rosichan then connected with Dom DiAntonio ’12 for TD pass on the next play. DiAntonio’s PAT kick was good, making the score 14-7. Reykelis Rosario ’12, in his first action since suffering a knee injury early in the season, intercepted the Eaglebrook QB on the next series inside Eaglebrook territory. The Winged Beavers managed their second TD in a three-minute span when Rosichan connected with Jack Oberg ’12 on the last play before halftime. In the second half, the offensive frustration returned as the Winged Beavers turned the ball over several times. Two more long TD passes from Eaglebrook made the final score 28-13 in their favor.

The team managed to win two of its final three games in very exciting fashion, despite missing several players due to injury. The Rumsey Hall matchup was a see-saw battle that the Winged Beavers won as John Carricato ’12 and Jay Adams ’12 recorded a safety with less than a minute to go. However, the excitement of this 16-14 victory was topped in the final game of the season versus Indian Mountain


School. After jumping out to a 6-0 lead early in the game, the Falcons managed to tie the score just before halftime and then move ahead 14-6 early in the third quarter. Avon tied the score late in the third when DiAntonio plunged across the goal line for his second TD of the day and then Rosichan connected with Carricato for the two-point conversion. IMS managed to jump back in front, 20-14, with about two minutes to play. At this point defeat seemed certain; however, Avon managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat when Rosichan hit Bryce Peters ’12 about 15 yards down field—after stumbling, Peters was able to keep his footing and elude several Falcon defenders while covering the remaining 55 yards between him and the game-tying TD. DiAntonio scored on the two-point conversion to give the Winged Beavers the final margin of victory 22-20.

The team finished with an final record of 4-5. They are a very talented group. Many of the players will be assets to the varsity team in the future. Coaches Riemer, Moskal, Symes, Lawrence, and Governanti thank the boys for their efforts and will follow their careers with great interest.

VARSITY SOCCER


VARSITY SOCCERThe varsity soccer team enjoyed another

successful season, posting a record of 13-2-4. The Winged Beavers were led by captains Colin Bradley ’09, Tim Clark ’09, Michael Giuliano ’09, and Terrell Whitting ’09. Also providing senior leadership were Jake Bourgault ’09, Ian Casella ’09, Ken Leslie ’09, Chris Ruhlig ’09, Mike Scali ’09, and Andres Ventura ’09, who all played significant roles throughout the season.

The season’s first match was a solid 4-0 victory at Trinity-Pawling, followed by a hard-fought loss at the hands of Taft, 0-1. Avon would return home for its next three matches, scoring a 3-1 victory over Brunswick, a 3-3 draw against Salisbury, and a 2-0 victory over a high-ranked Hotchkiss squad. The Winged Beavers would not lose another match for the remainder of the regular season.

During the middle stretch of the schedule, Avon would secure a draw at Deerfield and a win against a very talented NMH team. Returning home for


Parents Weekend, the Winged Beavers hosted the much-improved Hopkins School and came away with a hard-fought 2-0 victory. Tabor Academy – and a 4-1 win – followed. A draw at Westminster led Avon to the Kent School, who were undefeated at the time, but the Winged Beavers were not to be denied as they posted a 3-1 victory.

Next, Avon traveled to Kingswood-Oxford School, coming away with a 3-0 win, and then met an undefeated Loomis Chaffee School. Avon handed the Pelicans their worst defeat in decades with a 3-0 score. With the Winged Beavers in the driver’s seat for at least a tie for the Founders League title, and a possible favorable seed in the New England tournament, Avon went into the Choate contest overly optimistic and settled for a 4-4 draw. This frustrating result propelled the team to win its final two matches, and the Winged Beavers settled for a very disappointing sixth seed in the New England Class A Soccer Tournament.

The following Wednesday, the soccer team, along with 300 Avonians, traveled to take on the number two seed, Phillips Andover. Avon would find the back of the net first, but the opponents would get the equalizer, forcing the match into overtime, which was a scoreless affair; penalty kicks decided the match in Avon’s favor.

The Winged Beavers next moved on to the semifinals against Worcester Academy. Once again, the Avon victory was determined by penalty kicks.

Avon met Hotchkiss the following day as they tried to capture their third New England Class A title in four years. Unfortunately, the Winged Beavers lost this Titan battle, but in the final analysis, they left everything on the field. Though suffering a loss, they realized exactly what they had accomplished and took pride in their great efforts.

JUNIOR VARSITY SOCCERThe Avon Old Farms junior varsity soccer team

finished a difficult season with a 5-5-4 overall record. Due to graduation and players moving up to the varsity team, the JV had an interesting challenge with a mix of veteran seniors and many new faces to the AOF soccer program. The Winged Beavers got off on the wrong foot with a disappointing loss to Trinity-Pawling; despite having the majority of possession, the Winged Beavers fell 1-2. Avon then rattled off two ties and their first win of the season against Taft, Brunswick, and a tough Hotchkiss squad. The Taft game saw Avon down 1-3 going into the second half, but the Avonians persevered, coming back to tie the game, featuring two goals by forward Graham Speace and one by Sam Kimmerle ’09. The Hotchkiss game featured some incredible doorstep saves from keeper Mark Clarke ’09 and a calm penalty shot from Jon Rubinfeld ’10.

Avon fell 3-4 to an always talented and well-coached Loomis Chaffee squad. Unfortunately, the team had developed a bad habit of digging themselves an early hole before playing inspired soccer, yet often falling short. Avon had strong back-to-back victories against Salisbury, 3-2, and Hopkins on Parents Weekend, 1-0. The Winged Beavers gave a beautiful effort against a physical Northfield Mount Hermon team, earning a 0-0 draw. The game showcased Clarke’s development as a keeper, as he stopped a late penalty shot to preserve the tie. Avon then took a heartbreaking loss at Westminster, 1-2, failing to capitalize on several scoring opportunities and earning a mistaken red card for an “intentional” hand ball in our penalty area which gave Westminster the penalty shot, which added to their lead.

The Winged Beavers then put together three straight solid games, earning victories against Kent, 2-0, Kingswood-Oxford, 2-0, and a tie at Deerfield Academy, 1-1. The Deerfield game saw an incredible goal from distance by defender Peter “Thor” Thorington ’09, only to have Deerfield score with about two minutes remaining for the tie. Avon ended the season quietly with a tough 1-2 loss to Choate and a 2-4 loss to a scrappy Berkshire team.

This was most certainly a transition season, with inconsistencies in the quality of execution, yet with flashes of brilliance. With many of the younger players returning, The JV squad will look to continue to build on this season and return in the fall ready to put the program back to the top. Special thanks are due to the seniors who made this year so enjoyable: Dan Loveland, Ford St. John, Nick Fikre, Guillermo Barnes, Graham Speace, Sam Kimmerle, Graham Garland, Min Ho Lee, Kaz Nakamura, Peter Thorington and Mark Clarke. Also a big thank you to Coach Albert, whose enthusiasm for the game and commitment to conditioning helped our players realize what it takes to be a competitive team.

THIRDS SOCCERThirds Soccer had a truly outstanding season,

a reflection of the players who made up the team; their energy and enthusiasm, their dedication and determination, and the team chemistry evolved early in the fall and only strengthened as the season progressed. Yes, we put up great numbers, but more importantly, this was a fun team to be a part of and an enjoyable team to coach. The accomplishments of the team, as a whole, and the team members, individually, generated a lot of pride among the players and motivated them not simply to play to their potential, but to grow beyond that potential, which they did in their daily practices and in every game.

A season such as this is always filled with memorable games. The team finished with a 9-1-3 record, shutting out our opponents in six of those games. We out-battled an experienced and tenacious Suffield JV, 2-1. We tied undefeated Kent, 1-1, and Westminster, 2-2; we had two tough, well-played victories over Salisbury, 3-0 and 3-1; and our best effort of the season came in our final game, during which we put together an impressive eighty minutes of soccer to overpower a hungry Berkshire squad, 2-0.

Team awards are voted on by members of the team, reflecting the esteem with which winners are held by their teammates. “Best Offensive Player” was awarded to our leading scorer, Alex Johnson. Austin Goetjen was voted “Best Defensive Player.” Taft Havron won the “Most Improved Player” award, though he could easily have won any of the team awards. Finally, whether on offense or defense, Pat Birch was a dominant force from the start of the season to the final minute, and the unanimous choice for “Most Valuable Player.”

I would like to thank the players for a truly memorable season. I would like to thank the captains, Norm Allen, Eric Gerdner, and Pat Birch, for being such excellent leaders and role models. A special “thank-you” goes to my co-coach, Brad Carpenter, for all the time and energy he invested in this season and for all his support. This was a season in which the players and coaches alike can take great pride.

FOURTHS SOCCERAt halftime, I always tell my team that we have to

win the next forty-minute soccer game. The first half is one game, the second half is the other, and forget the score, let’s just concentrate on winning the next forty-minute game. In part, I have been able to get away with that because, historically, we have won a lot of games. Generally speaking, we have been either ahead or at worst tied in most of our games. This year was a bit different. This was a season of two halves.

In the first season, we began our first game by trailing in the first half when Salisbury converted on a PK that the second official—the only official in position to make the call—tried to overrule his partner, who, at 75 yards away and with about ten players between him and the play, definitely had a better angle. Naturally, we called upon Touchdown Tommy who dented the net with the equalizer and restored balance to the Force. Our first season went downhill from there. En route to a 1-3-3 record, we gave up 20 goals and scored a more modest seven, which was better than it sounds because we were shut out three times in that period. Times were tough. I was getting calls and emails from alumni.

Fortunately, the second season came along just in the nick of time. We would not be shut out, although we would shut out our opponents on three occasions, and we would not lose again, although we did record two more ties, including another against Salisbury. In the second season, we notched a 4-0-3 record, scoring 13 and giving up only four. And, again, the Salisbury game is a focal point: in the second half, we were up 1-0. Goalie Blake Clinton makes a save, and is ready to punt, Jungsu Kim has turned around to face the opponent, and with a mighty wallop, Clinton kicks a rocket which slams into Jungsu right below the 38th parallel, and then zips immediately into our goal, giving Salisbury the tying score.

Now, we truly scored 20 and allowed 24 on the season. However, I want that goal to be credited to us, so I say we scored 21 and allowed 23, and, because all of our losses came against public schools, I would argue that we had another undefeated Prep School season, but even I can’t quite buy that one.

Once again, everybody played in every game he was eligible for, and just about everybody played in every half, with only a few exceptions. All of our success was the result of the hard work of every boy on this team, every failing belongs to me.

This year’s seniors were a special group, and I am very proud of them. The newest senior and one of the few PGs in MM4 history was NKC (New Kid Chris), Chris Weiman, who found a spot on the team right away and helped us out in a lot of games. He worked hard to be an MM4, and he achieved that goal.

Mike Weeks, Ethan Broatch, Ian Lapin, and Whit Berry were veterans who were all impact players on offense. While Whit was our most frequent scorer, his last goal, against Suffield, is one that will stand out. Whit had been injured, and was not dressed at the beginning of the game, but he came down and when we failed to score in the first half, he grabbed TDT’s shirt and jumped in. Obviously, Whit scored very quickly, on a Broatch assist, and gave us a tie with about ten minutes to go, as Coach Custer described it, “a 50/50 win in the midfield and a couple of quick passes got the ball on the foot of [co-captain Ian] Lapin. Lapin beat the goaltender with a powerful shot to win the game for Avon with 3 seconds remaining on the clock. This gave the Winged Beavers a 5-3-5 record (5-0-5 in private school play), the team’s 14th straight winning record. Weeks was consistent in his scoring for the third consecutive season.

Other seniors were also big contributors. It is difficult to overestimate the value of hustle in the midfield, and these men came up huge as middies and forwards. Ryan Colatrella, Cam Hallenbeck, and Joey Vizcorrando were dynamic both in terms of speed and soccer savvy. It is great to have veteran talent with such eagerness and enthusiasm. These boys provided both. Cam played in a variety of roles, and everyone wanted to be on the field with him; he makes everyone around him better. Ryan had a two-goal game and several other tallies, and Joey was part of the “Muy Caliente” line with Attorney Domingo Diaz de la Guardia, another veteran with a lot of hustle.

This squad was packed with juniors, both new to the team and old friends. New to school this year were Pat McKenzie and Rylan Homscheid. “Fiskars” never disappointed at the midfield and steadily improved throughout the season. Rylan fully integrated himself as an MM4 right away; recognizing the type of versatility, hustle, and enthusiasm that would be required of him, he delivered on every front.

Declan Reed ended up as our Most Improved Player, with a stellar season in which he started well and kept on getting better. Touchdown Tommy Arnell chipped in the first goal of the season in a dramatic fashion and played his heart out. Kevin KT Thomas wanted desperately to be a part of this squad and he showed it in every single game and practice: a phenomenal role model. Jordan “Shinguards” Ide delivered as one of the key defensive players that he was told he must become. Eric Choi played a variety of positions with ferocity, including striker, his personal favorite. Ian Parker stepped up to be a big force this year and really impressed. Tim “Manchild” Kiene suffered an injury-plagued season, but continued his leadership. Connor Brackett chipped in whenever and wherever called upon, as did fellow day boy Patrick Gorham. Antonio Huang is among the fastest players ever to don the MM4 uniform, and if there is a position that Kevin Lin could not play I would like to know what it is; that boy can do anything.

Seven sophomores made huge contributions. On the defensive end, Jake Farkas has been signed to a

lifetime MM4 contract as our sweeper. Jungsu Park was extraordinary as a fullback or a stopper when called upon. Aaron Rix came up huge as a defender; we did not know how good he would be. Suk Jun Kim and Seung Young Cha both showed tremendous hustle and soccer sense—they are future stars. Danny Albrecht will surely be missed, a tremendous teammate and great contributor. Last but not least, Jordan Truppman, an MM4 legacy (joined by Clinton, Weeks, Diaz de la Guardia, Cha, and Reed) will continue to be a great member of this team—he is all about the pride of what it means to be an MM4.

The coaches take great pride in this team. As a special note, the team and I all wish the greatest success to our departing coach and friend, Mr. Nathaniel Custer. Coach Custer’s contributions to the legacy of the MM4s are many, and he will be missed.

FIFTHS SOCCERThe fifths soccer squad completed a very solid

season in the 2008-09 school year. Although we finished 6-7-1, there was a significant development of skills, team chemistry, and camaraderie as the season progressed. We got off to a slow start; we faced a few very disciplined and talented teams, such as Renbrook, Granby, Rumsey, and Avon High, which yielded three early season losses, but we recovered rather nicely. After those four games, we posted 6 wins and 4 losses, we scored a goal in every game, and we averaged 2.8 goals per game.

Highlights from the season include a 3-2 victory at home against Salisbury (the first win of the season), a 3-0 victory (our first shut-out) on the road against Suffield—in which Markus Donahoe, due to PK violations, actually had to score five goals in order to officially post three goals for Avon—and a 2-1 victory against Westminster on Parents Weekend (our first upset of the season, for Westy had beaten us days before, 3-5). The two victories against Eaglebrook are noteworthy; thanks to brilliant goal keeping provided by Sophomore Mac Daly and Freshman Markus Donahoe, we posted 9 unanswered goals (of which Donahoe had 3) against a very talented Eaglebrook squad.

The persistent effort and consistent performance of a few members of the squad certainly set the stage for the season and held the team together. Mac Daly had 3 shut-outs during the season with the help of defensive specialists Mike Milazzo, Porter Dowling, Nolan Villani, and Tim Dirgins. Also, Markus Donahoe, Boris Lindenau, Wei-An Chen, Nolan Villani, Jaime LeCocq, Colin Bernard, and RJ Previdi each scored at least one goal this season. Overall, the fifths soccer season was a great demonstration of hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship; without a doubt, the squad represented the school well and brought honor to our community.

CROSS COUNTRYThe 2008 Avon Old Farms harriers enjoyed

consistent success this fall on cross-country courses across New England. The team, led by captains Tully Hannan ’09, Anthony Cusano ’09 and Ben LaRocque ’10, always finished strong, and many broke personal best times.

The season started off early for many runners who returned to school for sports camp. They tested their ability to wake up early and push through the gruesome “Humbler” in addition to training runs and track workouts. The team also persevered through some of the legendary training runs to the Heublein Tower, the fear-envoking “Hell’s Gate,” and the Billy Goat trail.

The official season opened with the annual Choate Invitational, in which Avon competed against seven other schools. Tully Hannan placed first, and would continue to do so at every single race of his senior year, completing his second consecutive undefeated season.

As the season progressed, many of the meets were on home turf. Some highlights included a meet against Williston when the three captains each ran strong in order to secure a victory for Avon, and the Cusano brothers, Anthony and Joe ’11, as well as Matt Coz ’10, all beat their previous personal best times.

Another exciting moment arrived at the New England Cross Country Championships, hosted by Avon Old Farms, when Tully Hannan once again emerged at the front of the pack of runners from 12 other schools to secure first place in New England – and set a new course record at Avon with a time 16 minutes, 11 seconds. Avon took 8th place overall, finishing their season well.

The team found great talent from seasoned cross country veterans and new runners as well, many of whom were former fifths soccer players. Girard “The Hammer” Hampton ’11 joined the team as a first time runner and with his positive, never-give-up attitude, went on to finish each race of the season. Chris Winer ’10 and Reggie Mills ’10 both trained hard, sometimes too hard, but finished consistently and should be runners to watch out for next fall.

Captain Ben LaRocque worked steadily to move quickly to the top of the pack. He too, will be a runner to keep an eye on next year. The entire team consisted of tireless athletes with positive attitudes who all worked hard to improve themselves and their team.

VARSITY HOCKEYThe 2008-2009 Avon Old Farms Varsity Hockey

team had a record of 11-13-1. The team struggled to find an identity, having been decimated by graduation losses from last year’s New England Championship team. Injuries and illnesses also took their toll as captain Brad Peltz was unable to play until the final two games of the season. Captains Blake Forkey, Stefan Demopoulos, and Alex Riccio guided this young and inexperienced team through a difficult line-up of opponents. Toward the end of the season, maturing players and a strong work ethic enabled the team to win 4 out of its last 5 games.

The season opened on the road with a 7-0 shutout of Albany Academy. Quinn Smith had the hat trick and Stan Smrke scored twice behind Josh Dionne’s shutout. Morgan Mullen and Stefan Demopoulos each had two points but the team dropped a 6-4 decision the next day at South Kent. Despite two goals from Blake Forkey, Avon lost their first home game to Taft, 7-4. Mike Smigelski registered the winning goal as the team bounced back to defeat Trinity-Pawling, 3-1. On the road at Deerfield, the club had a difficult time containing the opposing

forwards, losing 7-3. In the first round of the 26th Annual Avon Christmas Classic, T-P took their revenge by a 4-1 count. The team was resilient the next day, pounding Loomis Chaffee by an 8-2 margin with Mike DeBello, Stan Smrke, and Stefan Demopoulos each garnering three points. In a tight night game between last year’s two New England Championship finalists, Avon snatched a 3-2 verdict over St. Paul’s with Mike Smigelski netting two goals and Josh Dionne sparkling in the net. The next day, the team was unable to respond to a tenacious Berkshire team, losing by a 4-2 score.

Returning from a two-week vacation, the Winged Beavers went on the road to Taft and shocked the Rhinos, then the #1 ranked team in New England, 5-1. Stefan Demopoulos had two goals to lead the team. The team was unable to sustain their brilliance, losing a 4-1 decision at Hotchkiss, and then, after a KJ Tiefenwerth last-minute goal had tied Kent, the team gave up an early overtime goal to lose a 2-1 overtime game. Morgan Mullen led the charge with two goals as Avon came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Pomfret, 4-3, behind John Jackson’s 33 saves. A frustrating 1-1 tie with NMH saw only

Charlie Vasaturo put the puck past the opposing net minder. The team battled hard at home only to lose a 3-1 decision to Berkshire. A deflating 4-2 loss to Westminster was followed by a 7-5 win over Loomis Chaffee with Quinn Smith scoring twice. A dull 5-1 loss followed at Choate and then another tough loss at Westminster.

Returning to school from mid-winter weekend, the team lost a squeaker, 2-1, to play-off bound Gunnery, as Connor Doyle registered his first goal. After falling behind Deerfield 2-0, the team responded to earn an inspiring 3-2 victory as Patrick MacGregor had the third period winner on the power play. Charlie Vasaturo lifted the team with four points as they pounded Choate by a 7-3 score.

The team then ran up against a strong defensive team from Salisbury, losing 4-0. Senior Doug Margison back-boned the team to a 6-3 win over Canterbury in the last home game with 26 saves. The finale at Loomis resulted in a 9-3 win as KJ Tiefenwerth had the hat trick and Mark Naclerio dished out 4 assists.

Hopefully, next year’s team will build upon this late season surge as they attempt to return the team to its former prominence. There is a solid nucleus of returning players to carry the torch of Avon Old Farms hockey.

VARSITY ‘B’ HOCKEYAvon’s Varsity B Hockey team had an

outstanding season. The team earned a 10-5-2 record and the Bob Rust Memorial Tournament Championship for the second consecutive year. The season began with a few demoralizing losses: 7-3 versus East Longmeadow High School, 10-0 versus Cathedral High School and 8-0 versus Mauldin Catholic High School. The fact that the team would only lose two more games after the first two weekends of play is a testament to their strong character and perseverance.

The earliest highlight of the season came in the team’s first win of the year over Longmeadow High School in overtime. Matt McGuire was the hero of the day with two goals including the game winner in the overtime session. Other key victories included defeats of Notre Dame of West Haven and Westfield High School; both teams were at the top of their respective leagues all season.

After the Westfield victory the team slumped to a two-game losing streak against Cushing Academy and Simsbury High School. However, the Beavers rebounded with a big victory over Salisbury and did not look back, as they went undefeated in their last eight games. One of Avon’s finest showings all year was in a 2-2 tie against a highly talented Academy St. Louis team. Avon played some great defense, led by Cael Brockmeyer , Jack Runkel, and Ivars Plaudis-Lasmanis, got two big goals from Alex Phucas, and had outstanding goaltending from Max Wopperer.

Avon received strong goaltending all year from Matt Labarge and Max Wopperer. Labarge earned a shutout in Avon’s 2-0 victory over the Long Island Gulls and Wopperer against Cushing in the team’s 3-0 victory on the road. Wopperer had his best game of the year as he turned away all of Cushing’s 30 shots. This was an important victory as it set the stage for the Bob Rust tournament the following weekend back at Cushing. The goaltenders could

not have done their job without a solid effort all season from defensemen such as Sam Marvin, Matt Brown, Jack Runkel, Cael Brockmeyer, Peter Thorington, Ian Casella, and Max Stetson. Their dedication to the team led to significant contributions over the course of the year.

Avon also received great leadership from the senior class. In particular, the team’s only returning players, Graham Garland and Anthony Cusano, both captains, had outstanding seasons. Their

commitment, focus, and leadership were essential to the team’s success. One season highlight for Cusano was his hat trick in Avon’s 4-3 victory against Westfield. Garland also tallied some important points, including the game winner in the Bob Rust championship game. Seniors Alex Phucas, also a captain, and Mike Fogarty, Peter Thorington, and Ian Casella also contributed significantly to the success of the team; Phucas for his passion, tenacious play, and offensive production; Fogarty for his commitment, discipline, and hard-work; Thorington, for his spirit, persistence, and work-ethic; and finally Casella, for his fierce defensive play, positive attitude, and sheer determination.

The highlight of the season was the Bob Rust Tournament. Avon defeated Salisbury 5-1 in the first game of the tournament to get to the final. In doing so, the team completed a three-game sweep of Salisbury on the season. The final was a nail-

biter right up to the closing minutes of the game. However, with 5:20 left in the game and the score tied 3-3, Graham Garland’s goal gave Avon the edge, and led to two more for the 6-3 victory. The big win allowed Avon continued possession of the coveted Bob Rust Memorial Trophy. Johan Frankenberger was named tournament MVP for his five-point tournament performance, and in addition, he and Graham Garland, Alex Phucas, and Max Wopperer were named to the all-tournament team. It was another great year for VB Hockey!

JUNIOR VARSITY HOCKEYThe 2008-09 JV hockey team had a successful

season. By season’s end, they compiled a record of 10-9-2. The season started on a tough note as Avon dropped a tight game in overtime to Cathedral High School. However, the team learned some important lessons and beat the Mass Conn Midgets in the second game of the season. That was the start of a win streak for the Winged Beavers, who went on to win four of their next five games, including a 1-0 thriller over Simsbury High School’s varsity squad. Booby MacDonald scored the lone goal and Zach Minsk earned the shutout in an excellent team effort. AOF also played well in wins over Founders League opponents Taft and Hotchkiss. Eli Vock was able to tally goals in both contests.

Abruptly, the team hit a rough patch in their schedule and struggled in the middle of the season. They lost 9 of their next 10 games, the last four losses all by a single goal. The only win during that time came over the CT Chiefs, where Matt Goldman and Bronson Kelly each scored a goal in the 2-1 victory. Even through the tough times, the team continued to work hard in practice and improve their play. Captain Tyler Wieland was instrumental in helping keep the team’s spirits up, and the team set a goal of winning at least four of their last five games to end the season with a winning percentage of .500.The first step was to avenge a loss from the first game of the season, and Avon shut out Cathedral High School in a 2-0 victory; Tieler Gittleman earned the shutout. The Winged Beavers then traveled to Gunnery and won an exciting game on John Carricato’s overtime goal. After tying Westminster, Avon needed 2 wins in the last weekend of the season. On Friday night, AOF knocked off the New England Falcons 6-2. The last game of the season saw Avon prevail with a 4-3 victory over a pesky Loomis team, ending the season on a strong 4-0-1 streak.

THIRDS HOCKEYThirds Hockey, which was comprised of a core

of veteran players and many freshmen, started their season by losing four in a row. Their first victory came at the thumping of Berkshire, 4-0, and later in the season the team beat Berkshire again 6-0. The team finished with a record of 5-11-2. Although we had difficulty finding the back of the net, the team lost five of its games by a one-goal margin. However, we were able to come up big against Taft and Salisbury. After losing at Taft in the beginning of the season, we played them in our barn and beat them, 3-2. This was Taft’s only loss of the season. We dumped our first game against Salisbury, but again, on our home ice we beat them in overtime.

Members of the thirds hockey team learned valuable lessons in team work and sportsmanship all while experiencing the enjoyment and camaraderie, which comes along with playing a team sport. While it took contributions and

sacrifices from all members of the team, there were notable individual efforts worthy of being recognized. Offensively, CJ Seward led the team in goals, while Eric Sjordin was the ultimate playmaker by collecting the most assists. In addition, Tom Geraghty, Bob Willett, Jordan Radin, and Jake Redfern served as power forwards who often sparked their teammates by scoring a pivotal goal or delivering a bone-crushing body check. Defensively, Chris Faulkner and Ray Wiacek both played instrumental roles by shutting down the opposing team’s offensive threats. Connor Cottrell and Aaron Rix were both valuable net-minders, sharing the responsibility as starting goalies throughout the season.

Overall, it was a very successful season; the team practiced hard on and off the ice, especially with dry-land training. I would like to thank all players on the team for their commitment and enthusiasm for the game.

VARSITY BASKETBALLThe varsity basketball team entered the 2008-09

season with high expectations. Unfortunately, the team suffered some tough losses and finished the season with a record of eight wins and 15 losses. However, the team competed hard every day in practice and in every game against quality opponents. In fact, only one of this season’s losses was to a team that did not make a post-season tournament.

Some of the season’s highlights included a great overtime win against the Peddie School and a six-game winning streak in the middle of the season, which included a sweep of rival Trinity-Pawling in two highly competitive games. The team then finished the season in a positive fashion with a season high 75-point effort in a win against Canterbury.

There were also numerous individual performances of note this season. Included among them were: Jordan Wylie’s 23-point performance (including going 7-for-7 on three-point shots) versus Peddie; Tucker Esborn scoring 21 points in the first half versus Westminster and completing a double-double in a win over Trinity-Pawling with 23 points and 10 rebounds; and Tim Brechbuehler’s multiple 20-point games, three double-double games, and a 22-point, 17-rebound, and 3-blocked shot performance against Canterbury to finish his Avon career in style.

The team says goodbye to 11 seniors this year: Captain Tim Brechbuehler, Steve Heller, Terrell Whitting, Tucker Esborn, Matt Stone, Mike Hermann, Jordan Wylie, Elias Pollack, Jac St. John, Aaron Zaleznik, and Mike Govoni. Also moving on is three-year manager Pierce Ford. Returning will be next year’s captains, Pat Miller ’10 and Connor Mooney ’10, as well as rising sophomore Tafari Whittingham ’11.

JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALLThe JV basketball team had a fantastic 2008-09

campaign. The team finished with a record of 17 wins and only one loss. This team had very talented players who blended nicely together as the season progressed. The roster consisted of some strong freshmen and sophomores – a good sign for the varsity in years to come. There were also some veterans who were great role models on and off the court. It was a great team to coach.

The year started off with a hard-fought win against an athletic Salisbury team on the road. Impressive wins versus Suffield and Kingswood set the stage for a great victory against Loomis, 50-45, before a large Saturday night crowd. After break, the Winged Beavers reeled off four straight wins, keeping their undefeated season alive. Darnell Davis hit two key baskets down the stretch to upend Salisbury, 45-41 in an exciting rematch. Four straight decisive wins would follow, but the season came down to two great battles with Taft in February. In the first game at home, Avon had a four point lead with 18 seconds left, only to see a dramatic Taft three-pointer at the buzzer hand the team their first loss. In the second game on the road, Avon again would blow a second half lead, but rallied to win a thriller, again decided in the final seconds, 48-46.

This strong group of basketball players would not have succeeded without the leadership of Henry Yuan (our only senior), and juniors Andrew Campbell, Taj Herrera, Brian Kincade, Doug Mosby, Marcel Levesque, and Andrew Cummings. A talented sophomore class also blossomed during the year: Darnell Davis, Makoa Kaleo, and Matt Jadovich all were integral parts of the team’s success. Freshmen Nnamdi Amilo, Sam Rosichan, and Pedro Vega were all key players on both ends of the floor.

It has been a real pleasure working with such a fine group of talented players this year. The coaches feel that this group will certainly help the program in the future.

THIRDS BLUE BASKETBALLThe 2008-09 season was the best season in the

history of Avon’s Thirds Blue basketball team. The team set single season records in points, rebounds, wins, and all other statistical categories. The season did not get off to a great start, as the team lost five straight games to begin the season. The most painful loss in the early going was a triple-overtime loss to Deerfield, 62-58. However, things then started to turn around for this young, talented squad. The first win came at home against Kingswood-Oxford, 37-29. Despite two losses thereafter, the team persevered to find success again with a four-game win streak. A close 63-60 loss to Gunnery spurned the team on to finish with two strong wins against Hamden Hall and Taft. Winning six of their last seven games shows the great progress that this team made over the season, and is a testament to their fine character and work ethic. The season ended with a grudge match against Avon’s Thirds Red squad. Thirds Blue won the game in dramatic fashion with a half-court buzzer-beater by Kenny Price. This was a great season for everyone; the team worked hard and had fun.

THIRDS RED BASKETBALLComing within just two points of an undefeated

season, the Thirds Red basketball squad—comprised of all freshmen players—enjoyed considerable success this winter. The only loss, a one-point heartbreaker to Deerfield, came mid-season, and perhaps provided the spark necessary to ensure a victorious second half. Thirds Red played an aggressive style of basketball, made possible by a talented group of young athletes. Each member of the team ran the floor, and all played wet-blanket defense to help the team outscore opponents by an average of 15 points a game. Perhaps the most memorable game was the season finale, an overtime thriller on the road against a determined Choate squad. This last game showcased the competitive spirit of the team. For the season, Mitchell Leeds commanded the offense at point guard with Wei-An Chen and Bryce Peters at the wings; all three guards could put the ball on the floor and were a formidable outside threat as well. Harrison Wasserbauer and Joe Sylvia started most games on the blocks, giving Thirds Red the advantage in rebounding and post scoring against many opponents. Jeremy Campbell, Alex Zieky, Jaime Baldwin, and Elliot Howe provided depth in the guard position. Zach Rubenstein, on the disabled list for the majority of the season, would have given the team another talented option at guard. R.J. Fiondella and Ryan Yen were a formidable duo on the blocks and contributed meaningful minutes throughout the season. In its inaugural season, Thirds Red basketball achieved great success.

RIFLERYThe 2008 riflery season was one of the best ever,

with team scores, individual accomplishments, and team continuity leading the squad to a great finish.

The riflery team had many firsts this year; it was their first-ever entry into the Niantic/Quaker Hill Invitational, in which they competed to get more match experience outside of the Founders League. The team placed second only to a club-sponsored team. Avon also won their first tiebreaker match, against Suffield. The team achieved its first score of 937, an all-time team high. The squad placed in the NRA junior sectionals for the first time, with Alex Tynell, who earned First Scholastic Team honors, placing 4th in intermediate junior. Finally, the team experienced firing on an Olympic-style course (120 shots in one match) for the first time.

Team captains Sung Jin Jeong ’09 and Tae Wan Kwon ’10 were superior leaders, and Sung Jin Jeong ’09 and Alex Tynell ’10 tied for 10th place average in the state; Alex beat Sung Jin in the tie-breaking process. Taeik Kim ’10, Aaron Zamojski ’10, and Woo Soo Choe ’10 shot consistently throughout the season. Jungsu Park ’11, Michael Zhai ’12, and Andrew Benson ’12 were first-year shooters who started the season barely hitting the target and finished the year making the top five counting scores. These three shooters were truly a success story

of dedication, patience, attitude, and perseverance for the whole team. Do Yeon Kim ’10, our team lingerer, shot remarkably when he made it!

The team made it to the state championships on a wild card bid. They placed 4th in the state with a score of 934, which was one point above the team average. The other competitors were dominated by Suffield Academy, who shot their own all-time high of 958 to claim this year’s state title.

SKI TEAMThis year’s ski team went through somewhat of

a rebuilding season, finishing in 4th place in the Berkshire Ski League, and 11th place at the NEPSAC Class A Championships.

The race season was cut short this year due to weather conditions. Nevertheless, the team pushed on and had a good regular season. Avon finished second in its first race, with Euan Sorrell ’11 (5th place), Ben Crocker ’11 (8th place), and George Iverson ’10 (10th place) leading the way for the varsity team. Despite having five racers finish in the top 20 overall, Avon finished third in its next competition, behind strong teams from Suffield and Berkshire.

The next race was the first part of the Berkshire Ski League Championships – the Dave Rockwell GS Championships. The team finished in 5th place overall, and managed to avenge the earlier loss to Berkshire, in addition to moving up a spot in the overall standings with a strong showing at the Carl Williams Slalom Championships. The performance at the slalom championships was a true example of how much the team improved over the season as several team members, including Riggs Brackett ’11, Max Rusch ’10 and David Barros ’11, had their best races of

the season and played a key role in the team’s success.The varsity squad will be losing one racer this

year, captain Patrick Birch ’09. His quiet leadership and racing ability will be missed. Fortunately, there are a number of candidates to fill his spot. Many racers return next year, including team MVP, Ben Crocker, most improved racer, Max Rusch, and coach’s award winner David Barros. The team has elected Riggs Brackett ’10, a three-year member of the varsity squad, as its captain for the 2009-10 season.

VARSITY SQUASHThe 2008-09 squash season was marked by growth

and development as well as fine sportsmanship. The team won three more games than the previous year, and finished with a 7-10 record.

There are now three divisions of the New England tournament and the Avon squad qualified for division B. At the New England tournament, Avon went up against some strong competition and finished 9th out of 12 teams.

The team graduates four seniors: Jared Ciejek ’09, Ford St. John ’09, Guillermo Barnes ’09, and Conor Price ’09. Even though the two best individual records were held by Jared (winner of the team MVP award) and Ford (co-captain), none of the seniors were in this year’s top four – though Jared did have an impressive personal 10-0 winning streak at the beginning of the season. Alija Hogans ’11, recipient of the Coach’s Award for his work ethic and ability to make everyone better around him, returns at the number one position. Co-captain Parker Bova ’10, who provided strong leadership as his game grew tremendously, will return at the number two position. Casey O’Brien ’10, recipient of the Most Improved Award, will continue to grow and will return at the number three position. Young Santiago Moran ’12, a freshman newcomer, will return next year with another summer of maturity under his belt at the number four position. Letterman Dashiell Flach ’11 will return alongside a hungry group of JV players ready to round out the varsity roster. The future is bright for this young team.

JUNIOR VARSITY SQUASHDespite a record of 4-14, the junior varsity squash

team considered its season a success, having not won a match in the 2007-08 season. With players from each class, the junior varsity team benefited from having seasoned athletes such as Henry Tesar ’09 and Van Noy Smith ’10 as mentors to younger players like Jeremy Ross ’12 and Jackson Brady ’11. Building around the young and the old were a solid group of juniors: John Rubinfeld, Jack Winkler, and Sebastian Silva. Rounding out the team was returner, Ryan Randall ’11.

While most of the practice days were spent working on fundamentals, the boys found time to build a strong team identity by helping each other grow as players both at practice and at matches. Coach Carpenter placed and emphasis on players identifying and playing to each others’ weaknesses, in order to improve them. When match days arrived, Coach Carpenter paired the players up with the expectation that each would help the other stay focused to the task, buoyed about his game play, and alert to his opponent’s weaknesses.

The Most Valuable Player award for the 2008-09 season is Van Noy Smith ’10, and the Most Improved Player award is Jackson Brady ’11.

Coach Carpenter is encouraged about the 2009-10 season, when he expects to see several of the junior varsity players return and form a core around which he can continue to help build the Avon Old Farms squash program. He is also excited about sending several players up to the varsity team and watching them as they take the main stage for the winter’s matches.

SWIMMING & DIVINGThe Avon Old Farms swim team had a great year.

With a mix of seasoned veterans and students new to the sport, this balance creates a unique learning environment for all, and ultimately a successful season every year.

During the season, each swimmer averaged nine best times. Many of their improvements were huge. Comie Stallmeyer ’10 dropped more than nine seconds off his 100-butterfly time this season. Julio Velutini ’10 dropped over five seconds off his best 100-free time in the New England tournament, swimming the 100-free in under one minute, and the 50-free in under 25 seconds. Nick Brogan ’09 dropped 5.34 seconds in the 100-free over the last three meets, and he swam in under one minute for the first time as well. Jordan Whalen ’12 undertook a brave endeavor, swimming the 200 IM in his first race at Avon, and in taking up fly with a month left in the season, he qualified for New Englands.

Every swimmer at the Founders League Championships swam at least one best time. The

Winged Beavers were led in the outing by Austin Goetjen ’10, who posted four best times. For the second year in a row, the team averaged over 14 best times per meet.

Perhaps most impressive were the relay teams. The 200-free relay team of Alex Levy ’10, Austin Goetjen ’10, Ian Parker ’10, and Tully Hannan ’09, improved their best time by 1.56 seconds, and scored as the number 14 relay in New England. The 400-free relay team of Alex Levy ’10, Ian Parker ’10, Tully Hannan ’09, and Nathan Riley ’10 helped Avon to realize a 14.5 second drop over three meets, and they swam even faster in New England’s with a time of 3:37.95. Alex started the relay for the first time and swam the 100 in 54.33 seconds, with Ian, Tully, and Nathan each following with best times. With these performances, Avon placed 17th overall in the New England Tournament.

Avon also boasted two divers: Jihad Harkeem ’12 and TJ Dougherty ’11, a swimmer-diver. Avon has been without a diving program for a few years and it is great to have some young talent on the diving board once again.

WRESTLINGThe 2008-09 wrestling season is one of the greatest

seen by the Winged Grapplers in recent history. With an 18-5 overall record, a 17-4 record against New England prep schools, and a 4th place finish at Western New Englands, the program is on the upswing. With about 40 wrestlers on the squad and only six of those graduating, the program will be strong for years to come.

The season opened with a strong 5th place finish at the Canterbury Invitational, with captain Jake Bourgault ’09 winning the 140-lb. weight class. The rest of the season built upon that success, and the squad wreaked havoc in the league, racking up 135 overall pins and amassing 1,239 total points, while only allowing 788. The Loomis Duals tournament saw Avon take a 3rd place finish at a tournament that they previously only garnered a 7th or 8th place result, as well as a 12-3 record in duals for the remainder of the season.

The season closed with two major tournaments: the Western New England Championships and the New England Championships. At Westerns, the Winged Grapplers took 4th place overall, the best finish in decades. Bourgault led the way, winning his weight class and winning the award for Most Pins in Least Time. Bourgault finished the season an amazing 23-1 and was a huge asset to the team not just for his successes on the mat but, along with co-captain Cory Cheyne ’09 (171 lbs), his leadership off the mat as well.

The New England Prep School Wrestling Championships were hosted by Avon this year and the event was a spectacular success, with simultaneous action on six mats and upwards of 50 schools in attendance. Overall, the season was a tremendous one, and the Winged Grapplers hope that the strength of this season is continued and improved upon next year, with elected captains Ben LaRocque ’10 and Matt Coz ’10 leading the squad.

VARSITY BASEBALLThe 2009 baseball season opened with much

attention, as Avon’s team found itself as the preseason 26th ranked high school baseball team in the entire country. The baseball community took notice of the school’s historically strong program, recent string of outstanding success, and some of our remarkably talented players. The attention earned by this year’s team was largely due to the team’s senior players. This group of seniors was extraordinarily gifted, highlighted by many Division I athletes and one likely major league draft pick.

The senior class was led by its captain, Tim Clark. He earned the MVP award in 2008, and returned as the starting shortstop to hit .384 while playing flawless defense at a demanding position. The team relied on his toughness and “baseball smarts” throughout the course of the season. He will take his impressive talents to the University of Massachusetts. He was supported in the infield by fellow seniors Greg Miller and Scott Kelleher. Miller, who has been on the team for three seasons and is headed

to Tulane, played third and hit .400 on the season. Kelleher, who was also on the team for three seasons and is on his way to Lafayette, played first and hit .346. The senior outfielders were Michael Scali and Kinley Mehra. Scali played centerfield, hit leadoff, and led the team in runs scored and stolen bases. Mehra hit .314 and his outstanding athleticism was a major asset to the team’s defense. The senior pitchers were an extraordinarily talented group, led by Tim Brechbuehler. Brechbuehler earned a scholarship to play at the University of North Carolina is a potential major league draft pick. His 90-plus mph fastball and remarkable athleticism earned him the attention of scouts, and his performance on the mound this year was outstanding. He struck out 91 batters in 60 innings of work, and surrendered just 28 hits on the season. The pitching staff also included Aaron Zaleznik, who is headed to UMass on a baseball scholarship, Jordan Wylie (4-0 as a pitcher and also a talented hitter) who is going to Wheaton College, and Graham Garland. Garland completed an impressive career at Avon, where he was undefeated


as a varsity pitcher. These seniors were supported by a talented group

of underclassman, led by the team’s 2009 MVP Tim Kiene. Kiene is a certain college prospect, who has also earned attention of professional scouts. He led the team in hits, batting average (.458), homeruns, and RBI. Cael Brockmeyer returned as the team’s starting catcher, and hit .380 on the season while earning the team’s Most Improved Player Award. Pat Miller started most of the games at second base, and hit .406 on the year. Joey Donino is also a college prospect, and his 88 mph fastball and sharp curve was a major asset to this year’s pitching staff. He also hit over .300. Connor Doyle provided many contributions as a catcher, and his ability, talent, and toughness is promising. John Salamone gave the team a powerful bat, many times off the bench as a pinch-hitter. Salamone’s 400-foot blast of a home run against Deerfield is an encouraging sign of things to come in 2010. Andrew Coffey’s excellent infield defense earned him many starts throughout the course of the season (both at shortstop and second base), and he also produced many valuable contributions as an offensive player. Torrey Proctor pitched well for the team all season when given opportunities, and was particularly sharp against Trinity-Pawling, Westminster, and Deerfield. Greg Giamalis gave the team solid production at the second base position, despite missing a significant portion of the season because of an injury. Whit Berry joined the group in April, and his lively personality and friendship added much to the atmosphere of the team.

The team compiled a 15-4 season record and a share of the Founders League Championship. Three of their four losses were by a total of four runs combined, and Avon outscored their opponents 166-65 on the season. This team came ready to play every game and at every practice. The 2009 team will always stand out in the memory of the coaches and the school as a team that was not only filled with talented, smart, and determined athletes, but also one that had a love for the game. The passion and personality that this team possessed, in combination with their extraordinary talent, resulted in a fun and successful season.

JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALLThe Avon JV baseball squad enjoyed one of its

best seasons ever, finishing the spring with a perfect record of 15 wins and 0 losses. What made this team special was its work ethic and attitude. Instead of relying on their individual talents, these Winged Beavers came to play hard every day in practice and games. The results were spectacular – but were a testament to the team as a whole. As a coach, I am very proud of their efforts.

The season started with hard-fought victories over Westminster, Rectory, and Salisbury. At home against Choate, Avon found themselves down 3 to 1 in the seventh inning. A gritty comeback saved the day and preserved a great pitching performance by Mike Gibbons. After big victories against Kent, Taft, and Salisbury (again) – Adam Spracklin pitched a shutout against Avon High School. A thrilling 1-0 victory over Loomis would follow – a win that included some great defense from Matt Coz and pitching from Mitch Leeds, who earned the win. Rematches against Loomis and Choate were dominated by Avon’s offense, and AOF was not challenged the rest of the way.

The pitching was stellar all spring; Gibbons and Spracklin dominated their starts, but Ryan Randall (2-0) and Jake Farkas (2-0) were also key contributors in their starts. Kenny Price, Leeds, and Matt Jadovich (2-0) were also solid.

On offense, freshmen Dom Di Antonio (.381), John Carricato (.550), Jordan Radin (.454), and Josh Lajoie (.393) were among the batting leaders. Sophomores Darnell Davis (.385), Euan Sorrell (.333), and Max Weiner (.457) all enjoyed fine seasons. Alex Johnson and Matt Detora were both key defensive players, and a special thanks goes out to captains Matt Coz and Julio Velutini for their great leadership all year.

THIRDS BASEBALLTo suggest that this team was inadequately coached

may be true of its named “Head Coach,” but would certainly seem absurd if one considers the raw numbers. Coach Beneski was ably assisted by his cohorts, the outstanding Coach Worrell, and the departed and dearly missed, Coach Custer. However, the list did not end there! A surprise coach in the form of Mr. John Coury, a talented hurler from the University of Hartford, arrived on our doorstep to assist with coaching pitching. And, from the ranks of the parents of Avonians came the veteran coach, Mr. Doyle—Tyler’s dad (not Connor’s and Cody’s). And so in this wonderful atmosphere we began the season.

The team had its share of successes and failures along the way, but there are certainly highlights and there were contributions from all over the course of the season. To begin, there were three outstanding captains, Jonas Nissley, the veteran, Mike Flynn, the Little Leaguer arisen, and Ty Doyle, the steady hand. Each of these boys made significant on-field contributions, but it was their leadership, selflessness, and dedication off the field that makes them memorable.

This team was comprised of a wide variety of boys from several countries, four grades, and an array of talent. However, the common link among all members of the team was heart. RJ Fiondella was an outstanding hitter, perhaps the most fearsome on the team. Jordan Whalen showed himself to be a pitcher to watch. Myles Riley pitched with ice water in his veins and great control. Julian Chung developed significantly in his second season to be a great contributor both offensively and defensively. The departure of Antonio Huang to track left center field as the exclusive province of Tyler Weiland, one of the fastest boys at school.

Seung Jin Jong, one of the all-time great Avonians in the classroom, the community, and the athletic fields, finished his three-year stint at AOF with this team. We shall miss him. Kevin Lin gave 110% of his effort on his off days; he gave more every chance he got. Joey Creen positively sparkled in his game at Brunswick. The departed Ben Halford was a consistent hitter, a terrific fielder, and a great teammate. So too was Morgan Mullen, the intrepid Canadian who by sheer force of will (and an abundance of athletic talent) became a valuable member of the team as a pitcher and a fielder, despite his complete lack of experience with baseball.

Nolan Villani is certainly one of the top prospects to come from this team. Jamie Baldwin, a tremendously conscientious catcher has a fine future as well. Steve “Honey” Honeyman had a big bat and made some great plays at third, as did the man with whom he platooned, the great Johnny Market, aka Juan Mercado. A key part of our infield was the smooth-fielding Keith Boratko, another boy who plays with great enthusiasm.

This team had outstanding personnel and was a great group of boys. This was a winning season for Avon Old Farms.

VARSITY LACROSSEThe Avon Old Farms varsity lacrosse team posted

another successful campaign in the spring of 2009. The team enjoyed strong leadership from its senior class, fourteen of whom will move on to play lacrosse in college next year. Offensively, the Avon attack was led by Stephen Burns (North Carolina), Tucker Priess (Fairfield), and Chris Marx (Rollins). Talented underclassmen Josh Dionne, Connor Mooney, Henry Tesar, and Chad Hollenshade all made valuable contributions at the attack position as well this season with their explosiveness and skills.

A deep and athletic midfield was led by Max Dolce (Towson), Marek Laco (San Diego), Chris Ruhlig (C.W. Post), David Baucherio (Sacred Heart), Ben Beath (Air Force), and Steve Heller (Bentley). Athleticism and speed were displayed by underclass midfielders Bronson Kelly, Johan Frankenberger, Alex Ball, Paul Mimms, Matt LaBarge, Taft Havron, Joe Lang, and Jay Montross.

Defensively, Avon was led by seniors Ben Liebel (Hartford), Michael Smigelski (Colby), Ian Cassella

(Gettysburg), and Connor Price (Roanoke). A physical and aggressive group of underclass defenders included George Wells, Curtis Sjodin, Sam Marvin, Connor Supple, Kieran Morris, Rylan Holmscheid, and Mako Kaleo.

Senior John Wallace (Bryant) defended the goal, and three talented junior goalies, John Runkel, Michael Lee, and Brendan Helberg, helped man the pipes along the way and anchor the defensive unit.

The team began the season with a highly successful pre-season trip to Kissimmee, Florida, to participate in the World Class Lacrosse “Run with the Big Dogs” Tournament. Fifty-three players and four coaches spent seven exciting, lacrosse filled days in sunny Florida. The Winged Beavers undertook a rigorous practice schedule, absorbed coach Governanti’s lacrosse progressions and competition with teams from the Middlesex, Brewster, and the Colorado Academy.

Avon opened the 2009 regular season schedule with a hard fought and physical game versus Northfield Mount Hermon, 13-11. Next, Avon


defeated three non-conference teams with victories over Berkshire, 12-8, Tabor, 15-9, and Chaminade College Prep, 20-3. A dominating Founders League road performance versus Choate, in which the squad prevailed 10-5, was followed by a heartbreaking loss to a very strong defensive Westminster team, 7-10. The Winged Beavers rebounded by dominating and defeating Kent 9-2. A decisive home game between the top two teams in the Founders League standings followed, which saw Avon fall to eventual Founders League Champions Hotchkiss, 9-10. The Winged Beavers rebounded from that loss by winning three straight home games versus highly talented teams. First, a close-fought Founders League victory over Trinity-Pawling, 13-11, followed by a dominating win over St. Luke’s School, 17-3, and a very physical victory over the Brunswick School, 13-9. Three tough losses—to Deerfield, 7-10, Taft, 5-8, and Salisbury, 7-16—had the team reeling, but they displayed character and resilience by dominating their final game of the season versus perennial rival Loomis Chaffee, 10-4. VARSITY ‘B’ LACROSSEThe 2009 varsity ‘B’ lacrosse team finished up

the season with a respectable 5-5 record. Despite a number of players who were new to the game altogether, the boys worked to overcome this inexperience, and they had a tremendous amount of fun along the way.

The team showed improvement throughout the season. After an early season 4-9 loss to the Watertown Lacrosse Club, we told the boys that we would be able to mark the team’s improvement when we played the Watertown Club two more times during the season. With practice and a newfound focus, the team went on a four-game winning streak and the boys were able to beat the same Watertown team in both of the next two meetings—one victory coming in a dramatic 8-7 overtime battle. Each player contributed to our winning season, and it was great to see both individual and team development throughout the season.

The team’s desire to win may not have equaled its desire to have fun, but we still won as many games as we lost, and each day the boys came out and had fun learning and playing the game of lacrosse. We wish the seniors the best of luck, and we look forward to seeing the returning members of the team back next year.

JUNIOR VARSITY LACROSSEThe 2009 Avon Old Farms junior varsity lacrosse

team was a competitive and talented group that enjoyed a successful season. The team’s final record stands at 11-1. The team out-scored its opponents by a margin of 126 to 46. We averaged 10.5 goals per game and gave up an average of just under four goals per game.

With only nine returning players from the 2008 team, it was a definite challenge for the guys to come together in such a short period of time and to execute what we as coaches expected of them.

The team was led by co-captains Lincoln Young and Bobby MacDonald throughout the spring. Freshman A.J. Rocco led the team with 20 goals and 26 assists through 12 games. Mike went on to earn the team’s Most Valuable Player award.

Our defense was anchored by junior goaltender Lincoln Young, who played every minute of every game as he was our lone goalie. Long stick midfield defenders Dan McDougall and Jack Brady were nothing short of warriors at their position, and close defenders Max Stetson, Will Rosichan, Eric Naclerio, Tieler Gittleman, and Liam Cardon shared time in the close defense. Short stick defenders Niko Masotta, Dylan Shamburger, and Mark Naclerio held opposing midfielders in check all season long.

Our offense was led by the lethal goal-scoring attack combination of A.J. Rocco, Austin Rocco, Matt Goldman, Blake Clinton, Max Wopperer, and Bobby MacDonald, along with midfielders Harrison Wasserbauer, Connor Janson, Michael Reed, and Alec Michell.

The faceoff “X” was controlled by Cody Fullinwider and Dylan Shamburger. Both dominated the faceoffs throughout the season and they played a large role in the team’s overall success throughout the season.

In the final analysis, the 2009 team was a fun group that possessed talent and enthusiasm for the game. The players worked hard, played together, and remained positive and supportive throughout the season. The coaches sincerely thank each and every player for their steadfast effort and commitment to the game.

THIRDS LACROSSEAvon’s thirds lacrosse team ended the season with a

respectable 9-5 record. The team got off to a strong 4-0 start, but would never regain the rhythm after its first loss to a talented and hardworking Westminster team. Nevertheless, the team put up some solid victories in the remainder of the season.

The Thirds’ most impressive and exciting win was the 4-3 overtime victory against Deerfield. It was a great back and forth game that saw some outstanding offensive and defensive play. Avon captured the win with two minutes left in the overtime session on a nice shot by Boris Lindenau. Avon’s second most impressive win also came against Deerfield, this time on the road. Avon got the best of Deerfield with a 4-1 victory. This victory marked the first time in the last ten years that the Thirds defeated Deerfield twice in the same season.

Avon’s defense was the strongest part of the team all season. Tim Dirgins, who had a great season between the pipes, could not have earned his two shutouts (Loomis, 14-0, and Rectory, 4-0) without the work of a disciplined defensive unit. Connor Latz led the charge, but not without help from Joe Sylvia, Ryan Yen, Bryce Peters, Hayden Gartzman, Gerard “Jerry” Hampton, Mike Barros, Eric Sjodin, and Ollie Rothman.

The team’s offense was led by top scorer, Tucker Hart. While the defense and goalie played well at Rectory, the game could not have been won without Hart’s four goals on the day. P.J. McInnis, R.J. Previdi, Alija Hogans, and Eric Sjodin also contributed significantly to the offense.

As a whole, the team’s overall effort was consistent on the season. Most important is the amount of improvement seen over the course of the season. Many players had never held a lacrosse stick before in their lives, yet made significant contributions to the team’s success on the season.

VARSITY GOLFThe Avon Old Farms varsity golf team had a solid 2009

campaign, posting a regular season record of eighteen wins and only five losses. In tournament play, Avon finished first in the Coppola Cup. Level-headed play combined with solid course management allowed Avon to repeat as cup champions in 2009. Unfortunately, Avon faltered during the Founders League tournament and finished the day with a fifth place result. This disappointing finish acted as a stimulus for the team and refocused the entire squad. Realizing the importance of consistent play, the Avon golfers had an impressive second place finish at the Kingswood Invitational Tournament (KIT). Avon was one of twenty-three schools in this event, and just missed winning the 2009 KIT title by two strokes. However, Avon ended the season on a successful note, as Avon’s Marcel Levesque ’10 captured the individual title at the Eastern Interscholastic Golf Association (EIGA) tournament. Marcel improved during each round of the tournament, and on the final day, posted a round of 70 (E). Captain Jack Knobloch ‘09 finished fourth overall, and in doing so, posted his two best rounds of the spring season. As a team, the Winged Beavers finished third in the Horace D. Taft Cup (4-man team) and second in the The Frank Heyniger Bowl (3-man team) with these solid scores from Marcel and Jack.

The 2009 varsity ladder consisted of the following players: Marcel Levesque ’10, Jack Knoblock ’09, Jack Winkler ’10, Parker Bova ’10, Fernando Maura ’10, and Tyler Donahue ’09, all of who made notable contributions at different times throughout the season. Senior, J.P. Rotchford was also an important member of this years squad and played as an alternate for most the season.

A two-year member of the varsity golf program, Jack Knobloch ’09 has been a true leader for the team. During the last two seasons, Jack has been a standout on the varsity ladder. As captain, he has been an effective leader, who not only motivated his teammates, but often proved to be a valuable golfer, whose individual scores often determined the outcome of each match. For all his successes during his career at Avon, Jack Knobloch was awarded the 2009 Coach’s Award.

Jack Winkler ’10 earned the team’s 2009 Most Improved Player. Making the transition from junior varsity golf in 2008 to varsity golf this spring, Jack proved to be a valuable addition to the team. Throughout the season, he demonstrated a strong degree of determination, which helped him escalate his play as the season progressed. This was clearly evident as Jack achieved medalist honors during the Coppola Cup. Jack’s level-headed playing style always gave him the upper-hand in head-to-head matches and allowed him to play an instrumental role in the

success of the team this season.Marcel Levesque ’10 was the backbone of the 2009 varsity

squad. In addition to playing consistent golf throughout the spring, he was able to push the entire squad to play at a higher level. For this, Marcel earned the Tom and Dottie Purnell Most Valuable Player Golf Award. This season, Marcel also finished the year with the lowest 9-hole stroke average on the team. Finally, his fourth place finish in the KIT was a key score in the team’s second-place finish.

Varsity golf will miss seniors Jack Knobloch, Tyler Donahue, and JP Rotchford, who have all demonstrated consistent play throughout the season. Clearly, this year’s squad leaves large shoes to fill, but hopefully members of AOF’s junior varsity golf team will improve their game over the summer and make the jump up to varsity next spring. Congratulations to all members of the 2009 varisty golf team and best of luck to Jack, Tyler, and JP next year in college!

JUNIOR VARSITY GOLFAfter an exceptionally competitive qualifying tourna-

ment, we established a lineup of two veterans, Craig Tep-per and Alex Levy, and seven new players, Derek Snetro, Justin Niemeyer, Alejandro Tapia, Wayne Carter, Angelo DiMarco, Jack Oberg, and Zachary Rubenstein, who brought strength and reliability to the team.

True to form for New England, we had to play our first match through intermittent snow squalls. After surviving the cold, our golfers began to lower their scores in match-es each time we went out to play. Fortunately, we began to build momentum and set the season’s low score record at Berkshire with a 205 at the Egremont Country Club.

While we had played well on the road at Watertown Country Club against Taft, winning by four strokes, we were able to earn a second win against a steadily improv-ing Loomis team by the narrowest of margins – one stroke. The last weeks saw us finish the season with wins, earning an exceptional record of eighteen wins and no losses.

Our team average (for five players in a match) is just over 220 against our opponents’ average of almost 241, and we have had the medalist in each match except two. However, the fact that we have done so well with so many ninth and tenth graders this year means that next year we will have another strong team with even more experi-enced golfers. As good as this year has been, I can honest-ly say that I am already looking forward to what this team will do next year.

VARSITY TENNIS

VARSITY TENNISThe varsity tennis team had an extremely successful

season. Matching last year’s win total with an overall record of 6-9, the Avon squad steadily improved over the course of the year. The team was well-balanced in terms of chemistry; featuring only seniors and sophomores, the blend of veteran leadership and youthful enthusiasm proved to be a winning formula in many of the team’s matches.

As far as the players, we knew that we had a fair amount of depth and there was not much difference between our #1 and #6 players. We also knew that we did not have anybody at the top of the lineup with a great deal of experience. In other words, our wins would predominantly be determined by how our bottom players fared. It became imperative for our team to take the doubles point and have the bottom half of the ladder win their singles matches for Avon to earn the victory. Most schools have ranked players at the top of their lineups, and we would therefore struggle at the top. Ethan Broatch played some great tennis in the top spot, continually battling some of the best players in New England. Ethan earned a solid victory against Canterbury at the #1 spot this season. Captain Ford St. John, captain Doug Margison, James “Fitness” Forster, and Dash Flach were all locked into our singles lineup with the #6 spot floating between

senior Jared Ciejek and sophomore Connor Cottrell. Senior Domingo Diaz de la Guardia also helped to fill out the rotation.

Our doubles teams were a real strength this season. The #1 pair of Doug Margison and Ford St. John knocked off some of New England’s finest duos, including those from Taft, Hotchkiss, Gunnery, and Choate—teams who consistently send players to the New England Prep School Invitational championships. Indeed, Margison and St. John qualified themselves for this invitational tournament, and are the first Avon doubles team to qualify in many years. The #2 team was also a boon to the Avon squad, featuring the terrific duo of sophomores James Forster and Dash Flach. They played some inspired tennis throughout the season, helping to nail down the doubles point.

The varsity team worked and played together, improving over the season. Coaches Coons and Cugell would like to thank the seniors for their service to the squad and are looking for the younger players to continue match play through the summer and come back next season looking to build on the solid advancement of this year’s team.

The team’s Most Improved Player this year went to

James Forster. Last year, James helped fill the bottom slots of the roster and was not guaranteed match play. This year he returned as a more aggressive and calculating player. Indeed, he wrestled the #4 singles spot away from the rest of the team and locked it down for himself. James was a major contributor this season. In fact, every match that Avon won this year, James won his singles match to aid the cause. If he continues to improve, gain match experience, and develop the necessary conditioning, James has a chance to do some special things for the Avon tennis program and really lead the team over the next two years.

The team had co-MVPs this year. These two are inseparable on the court, and their success was inherently linked, so to award them this way makes great sense. Captains Doug Margison and Ford St. John were a dynamic doubles squad, but also were huge assets in the singles department as well. Ford St. John’s adaptable style of play helped him dictate the tempo of his matches, which often worked in his favor. Meanwhile, Margison’s fitness, competitive fire, and rallying ability kept him in even the tightest matches and saw him eke out some big wins. The coaches are thankful for their service to the program and wish them the best of luck in college.

was especially large this year. This made it possible to fill holes when needed, but also helped shape the character of the team. This was a team full of competitors who supported each other throughout the season and worked hard to be the best tennis players and young men that they could be.

The team posted a deceiving 6-7 record. Although 3 losses came from the powerhouse squads of Taft, Loomis, and Choate, the team lost all of the other four matches by only one point, many in tiebreakers. Considering the youth and inexperience of the team this year, this is an incredible result. This season could have just as easily yielded a 10-3 record.

One of the highlights of the season was the match against Loomis. On a blazing-hot day very early in the season the squad lost the match 1-6. Despite Avon dropping 6 points, the silver lining was the emergence of an important part of the team: freshman Porter Dowling. Porter would be a consistent point for the team in almost every match and was a key to the season. Another highlight was the victory over Westminster against a solid squad by the narrowest of margins. Kudos to the team for grinding out the 4-3 victory.

Some further contributors are Captain Luis “Pavo” Maura and junior D. Sebastian Silva who dominated the number one doubles slot with their flair and smart tennis. Luis and Sebastian also played well in singles matches. Sophomore southpaw John Jackson also made his mark playing around the number four spot in the singles.

The success stories of the season were those of sophomores Connor Olson and Jason Lally. Both brought a consistent fan-base to their matches and both (coincidentally) had just started playing tennis within the past year. Jason made his way up the ladder with success in intra-squad challenge matches, then real matches; Connor made his mark by winning a dominating match

against the number one player of the JV reserve squad at Taft. By the end of season, both were playing excellent matches at the bottom of the JV ladder. We look forward to seeing the stellar growth of these two young men!

Some other helpful pieces of the squad were Captains Henry Yuan and Mike Sur, who contributed with their excellent play and leadership; freshman Jay Adams, a rising star; freshman Jeremy Ross and junior Woo Soo Choe, for their outstanding doubles play; and juniors Eric Choi and Brian Kincade for playing well and when needed.

The team would like to thank Coach Doyle, the administration, Coaches Coons and Cugell, all of their opponents, and the fans for a wonderful and memorable season. The team would also like to especially thank manager John Amour who could not have helped out more. He even got a match against the aforementioned Westy squad and helped Avon win the doubles point. The team looks forward to another great season next year with many young returning stars!

TRACK & FIELDThe 2009 Avon Old Farms Track team finished

the season with 7 wins and 4 losses. Avon was led by captains Tully Hannan, Jake Bourgault, Anthony Springer, Anton Dovgii, and Ben LaRocque. Despite losing many talented seniors from last year’s New England championship team, Avon’s newcomers did quite a good job. Freshmen Jemison Dias (triple jump) and Tafari Whittingham (long jump) made an immediate impact on the squad. Also, newcomers Demetrius Papadopoulos (4x100m relay), Matt Brown (throwing events), Andrew Cooper (mid and long distance), and Max Rusch (long distance) gained valuable experience and will be forces to be reckoned with next season. Veterans Nate Riley, Reggie Mills, Grey Spencer, Comie Stallmeyer, Pierce Ford, and Patrick Wilson were able to pull this very young and inexperienced team together to have yet another successful season.

The team finished fourth overall at the Founders League Track Championships despite having a host of late-season injuries to some key team members. The highlights of the meet for Avon were Nick Cox’s long jump and high jump; Nick won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet ¾ inches, and also won the high jump, flawlessly soaring over the 6 feet mark. Captain Tully Hannan won the 3000m run and also placed second in the 1500m run.

Several Avon athletes earned All-Founders League Team distinction as well: Reggie Mills (1500m), Patrick Wilson (shot put), Nate Riley (javelin), Jemison Dias (triple jump), Craig Faulkner (high jump), and Avon’s 4x100m relay team, consisting of Demetrios Papadopoulos, Peter Thorington, Andrew Cummings, and Grey Spencer.

The team next traveled to Andover, Massachusetts to compete in the 2009 New England Championship meet, on Saturday May 16, to defend their 2008 championship. Avon’s Tully Hannan was the sole individual event champion for the team, winning the 3000m run with a time of 8:58.72 seconds, and broke his own school record, to become All-New England. Nick Cox was the only other Avon athlete to gain All-New England status, doing so in both the long jump and high jump. The 4x100m relay team, consisting of Demetrius Papadopoulos, Peter Thorington, Andrew Cummings, and Grey Spencer, ran their best time of the year at 45.35 seconds. In addition, Andrew Cooper

shaved five seconds of his best time of the year in the 1500m run by finishing at 4:30.60 seconds. The Winged Beavers placed 8th overall in the meet.

A special thank you goes to coaches John Bourgault ’80, Kevin Lawrence ’98, and Shane Tutwiler; without these men, the success of the Avon track team would have not have been possible.

Avon Old Farms believes deeply in the educational value of athletics, and the Athletic Hall of Fame is a meaningful way to celebrate the school’s successful athletes and

teams. The mission of our Athletic Hall of Fame is to honor exceptional individuals and teams who have achieved greatness and made outstanding contributions to Avon’s rich athletic tradition.

The Hall of Fame is now a fixture on campus and has a permanent home in the new student

center. This area serves as a celebration of Avon’s strong athletic tradition and designates a place for reflection, inspiration, and distinction.

The school and the alumni association were proud to induct a new class of individuals and one team during Reunion Weekend 2009: John R. Calcaterra ’63, John A. Sebastian ’84, Carl A. Valimont ’84, Calvin R. Ingraham ’89, William P. Norcross ’89, David L. Roberts ’89, and the 1984 varsity lacrosse team.

These individuals join the following AOF Athletic Hall of Fame members: Jorge Consuegra ’51, Herbert C. Cochrane, Dr. Henry “Skip” Flanagan, Roger Nicholas ’76, Juan Nieves ’83, Brian Leetch ’86, Chris Hetherington ’91, the 1955 varsity football team, the 1975-76 varsity swimming and diving team, the 1975-76 varsity basketball team, the 1976 varsity baseball team, the 1979 varsity lacrosse team, the 1985-86 varsity hockey team, the 1988-89 varsity hockey team, and the 1990 varsity football team.
