Before we look at what’s to come in 2008, let’s celebrate

all that was accomplished in 2007. The Airport

Authority kicked off the year by lowering landing

fees charged to airlines operating international passenger

and cargo flights into YVR, making our airport’s international

landing fees the lowest of all major Canadian airports.

In March, we introduced the new face of YVR, represented

by our new logo and the opening of the first phase of the new

International Terminal wing, our largest expansion in more

than 10 years. The expansion, which opened fully in June,

added more than 36,000 square metres of terminal space and

four new international gates.

Domestic travellers weren’t forgotten; in May, a new

$17-million regional commuter facility was unveiled for

aircraft serving YVR’s 30-plus destinations within B.C. The

new $117-million Link Building connecting the Domestic and

International terminals also opened in 2007.

The coming year will see many more projects reach

completion. Perhaps one of the most important projects of

2008 is the redesign of the passenger service/public greeting

area in the International Terminal. It will provide a full-

service international reception lounge with a customer office

providing 24/7 support for international arriving passengers

and those meeting them. This project will be completed

in the summer of 2008, part of the many initiatives we’ve

undertaken to ensure the best care for all customers at YVR.

Also, by late summer, the Canada Line’s three Sea Island

stations will be substantially completed and testing of the line

with “live” trains will occur throughout the year.

A number of new baggage systems will be placed into full

operation in 2008, including new Domestic Terminal inbound

carousels, advanced screening equipment and transfer lines

between the International and Domestic terminals to provide

seamless luggage transfers for passengers connecting at YVR.

All of these enhancements will increase baggage processing

efficiency, which means getting your luggage from one place

to another will be faster and easier.

The expansion of C-Pier will begin in 2008. This area of the

airport is one of the oldest and is used primarily by Air Canada.

Five new gates will be added in time for 2010. Airside, a new

north-south taxiway for wide-body aircraft will be finished—all

part of our preparations for newer, larger aircraft, such as the

A380, which has already made two visits to YVR—and the

south terminal airport will receive new apron pavement.

In 2008, you’ll see enhanced maps with pictograms

throughout the terminals, multi-language help brochures at

all customer care points, improved multi-language signs and

expanded training for all of our frontline customer care staff.

In fact, individualized customer care is our key focus going

forward, and all current and future initiatives will be geared

toward providing our passengers and guests with the highest

standards in service.

Glasses, cell phones, lap

tops and keys: These are

the top four items lost

by passengers last year at YVR.

If you have ever lost something

while travelling, you are not alone.

Last year, more than 7,000 items

were turned in to the Lost and

Found office at YVR, located

at the Customer Information

Counter on Departures Level 3

of the International Terminal. The office

helps reunite passengers with items lost

within the terminals, seven days a week.

“At YVR, we know how easy it is to

lose things while travelling, and how

stressful it can be to have to replace

them,” said Lost and Found coordinator

Dawn Coates.

According to Coates, the office

answers more than 300 phone calls a

week, for an average of 60 to 75 calls

each day. Summer and Christmas are

the busiest periods, with more than

3,000 items found during that period

last year.

Two of the more unusual items

found were a sample breast implant,

and an artificial limb. The latter had

been left behind at a security screening

area by a traveller in a wheelchair who

had been asked to remove it because of

its metal content.

Items are most often discovered

in high traffic areas, such as security

screening areas, restaurants, food

courts, bank machines, phones and

washrooms.

Happily, 60 per cent of all items

turned in are returned to their owners.

Items in the Lost and Found are

carefully logged and tracked with a

computerized database. Every attempt

is made to return the items, although

locating the owner often requires some

detective work. If an item is unmarked,

the department’s resident sleuths may

call a number in a cell phone directory to

see if they can uncover the owner or use

the Internet to search for phone

numbers and addresses.

Valuable and personal items

such as passports, ID, bank cards

and credit cards are returned

to their owners or the issuing

authorities. Cellular phones,

lap tops and PDAs are usually

returned to their rightful owner.

If an item is not claimed

within 60 days, it is donated to a

recognized charity. Eyewear, however, is

donated to developing countries, while

unclaimed electronic items are sent to a

recycling facility.

If you’ve lost an item at YVR, call

(604) 276-6104, toll free 1-866-817-

5243, or fill out the form on the airport’s

Website at www.yvr.ca/guide/around/

Air New Zealand is toasting the success

of its new direct route between

Vancouver and Auckland with new

menu choices supplied by Shannon Wrightson,

executive chef at Vancouver’s Fairmont

Waterfront hotel. Wrightson, a Kiwi-come-

Vancouverite, is also keeper of the hotel’s

legendary third-storey rooftop garden, where

he and his team of 35 chefs grow fresh herbs,

vegetables and fruit.

“My opportunity was to create meal options

[for the Vancouver-Auckland route] that

showcase Pacific Rim flavours by drawing on

my experiences and the produce offered in

Canada and New Zealand,” said Wrightson. “My

team and I think we’ve cracked it.”

As a result, when premium class travellers

from Canada and New Zealand board Air New

Zealand’s Boeing 777-200 ER to swap seasons,

they are in for a culinary experience that fuses

the best of both destinations.

Some of the dishes created by chef

Wrightson and his team include:

• Spicy Prawn Salad—with New Zealand

avocado oil, citrus aioli, soft herb salad,

tobiko and champagne vinaigrette, and

• Apple Syrup Lacquered Salmon—with west

coast crab and potato cake, asparagus and

orange fennel salad.

Both dishes are available on the daily

menu at Herons restaurant in The Fairmont

Waterfront hotel.

“Really outstanding air travel experiences

start with a warm welcome, attentive service

and an in-flight menu worthy of the most

discerning diner,” said Roger Poulton, vice

president, Air New Zealand – The Americas.

“For the Vancouver-Auckland flight, our aim

was to capture the culinary best of both New

Zealand and Canada. Chef Wrightson took time,

creativity and care to craft these memorable

dishes and Air New Zealand is delighted to

welcome him to our world class consultant

chef program.”

Air New Zealand’s year-round service

provides three non-stop flights each week on

Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays between

Vancouver and Auckland from November-

March and July-August. The service will be

available twice-weekly other months; offering

Canadians access to a variety of experiences

throughout New Zealand’s seasons.

Star Alliance partner Air Canada will also be

code sharing on this service.

Flight and vacation details can be

booked on AirNewZealand.ca or by

calling 1-800-663-5494.

Air New Zealand adds Pacific Rim flavours to its airborne menu

New Zealand-born executive chef Shannon Wrightson collaborated with Air New Zealand

on its in-flight menu for the airline’s new Vancouver-Auckland route.

Air New Zealand is revolutionizing

the international customer

travel experience with the

introduction of an in-flight International

Airline Concierge service—a first in

the aviation industry. The new service

launches in April on Air New Zealand’s

Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Francisco

to Auckland routes.

“Air New Zealand will employ up

to 90 concierge staff, which will be

dedicated to making every customer’s

journey before, during and after an Air

New Zealand service a special event,”

said Roger Poulton, vice president, Air

New Zealand - The Americas. “There is

no other airline in the world offering

such a service, giving Air New Zealand

a significant edge over its international

competitors.”

The new International Airline

Concierge service will offer a combination

of travel advisers, disrupt managers,

loyalty and destination experts focusing

on supporting every customer’s travel

needs. Concierge service staff duties

may include: escorting passengers to

and from the aircraft; recommending

“must-do” activities while visiting New

Zealand; assisting customers with

onward bookings; supporting customers

affected by a weather disruption;

advising passengers on Star Alliance

network options; or talking through the

finer points of customers’ in-flight wine

selections.

“Everyone travelling with us, no

matter how full the aircraft, receives

the personal attention they deserve

and the advice they need,” said

Poulton. “We’re dedicated to finding

new ways to deliver our customers

with a uniquely Kiwi experience at

every stage of their journey, and the

best way to do that is through our

people. Air New Zealanders are our

competitive advantage.”

The concierge initiative was

developed from Air New Zealand cabin

crew and customer feedback captured

during the past two years. The initiative

is a natural complement to the airline’s

award-winning long-haul product and

service. Concierge staff will serve as

New Zealand ambassadors, as well as

experts in the regions to which they

fly.

Zoom between Canada and Italy

The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport,

Infrastructure and Communities, has announced the

designation of Zoom Airlines to operate scheduled

international air services between Canada and Italy.

“I am pleased that Zoom’s designation will provide

additional airline choices for Canadians travelling between

Canada and Italy,” said Minister Cannon. “This increase in

scheduled air services is a great example of growth in the airline

industry and of the Canada-European Union bilateral market.”

Under the provisions of Canada’s international air transportation

policy, all Canadian air carriers may apply to the Minister for

designation to operate scheduled international air services.

This latest designation was made possible by the bilateral air

transport agreement already in place between Canada and Italy.

The agreement permits each country to designate any

number of airlines for the operation of scheduled air services to

and from Canada with no limits on the frequency of flights each

designated airline is allowed to operate.

Zoom will anoounce its Canada-Italy destination shortly.

Zoom Airlines is owned by brothers Hugh and John Boyle,

Toronto-based Scottish businessmen with a strong track record

in the travel industry, backed by minority shareholder, the Bank

of Scotland.

Last month, oneworld airline alliance

was named the world’s leading

alliance for the fifth year running

at the World Travel Awards, considered

the travel industry’s equivalent of the

‘Oscars’. Oneworld has retained the

award every year since this category was

introduced in 2003.

Some 170,000 travel professionals

and agents worldwide cast votes in the

World Travel Awards, which took place

at a gala ceremony in the Caribbean’s

Turks and Caicos islands last month.

The award was the culmination of

a record 2007 for the alliance, with

11 new carriers joining and expanding

the network to close to 100 more

destinations. Additionally, co-locations

at key airports generated more revenues

for member airlines.

In the top worldwide judging

categories, oneworld’s member airlines

also received their share of recognition.

For the third year running British

Airways was named the world’s leading

airline overall, Cathay Pacific was named

the world’s leading first class airline

and American Airlines honoured for the

world’s leading economy class.

The awards also named Cathay

Pacific as Asia’s leading airline,

American as North America’s leading

airline, LAN as South America’s leading

airline and Qantas as Australasia’s

leading airline.

“Oneworld is delighted to have

received this tremendous vote of

confidence once again from some of

the most knowledgeable people in

the travel industry worldwide,” said

Michael Blunt, vice-president corporate

communications. “It reflects the

quality of our airline members and our

commitment to deliver alliance customer

service better than any one else. It’s a

wonderful way to end what has been a

record-breaking year for the alliance.”

Last November, oneworld

completed its biggest expansion since

its launch eight years ago, with the

addition of China’s Dragonair. This

follows the recruitment earlier this

year of Japan Airlines and five of

its affiliates, plus Malév Hungarian

Airlines, Royal Jordanian, LAN

Argentina and LAN Ecuador.

Together, they expanded the alliance’s

network to some 700 destinations in

almost 150 countries.

Oneworld voted world’s leading airline alliance at World Travel Awards

To mark its addition to the alliance on November 1, 2007, Dragonair chief executive Kenny Tang and two of the airline’s flight attendants placed the first oneworld logo on its aircraft.

Daniel Sitnam, president and CEO of Richmond-based Helijet

International Inc. is pleased to announce that Rick Hill has been

named vice president of operations and commercial programs,

effective December 1, 2007.

In his new role, Hill will lead

and oversee all facets of fixed

wing jet and helicopter air service

operating standards and commercial

development, with the support of a

highly qualified management team.

Hill has maintained a senior

position with Helijet for 18 years and

has managed commercial, financial and

technical operations while overseeing

the primary development of Helijet’s

scheduled helicopter air services.

Hill’s extensive background in

aviation leads back to overseeing

financial reporting and route planning

at CP Air, then at Canadian Airlines,

where he was instrumental in integrating Canadian’s regional network

with the mainline parent carrier.

“Rick’s industry experience gives Helijet a tremendous advantage over

other carriers,” said Sitnam. “Rick’s new role will channel his expertise

for integrating operational and commercial standards within Helijet.

That means keeping our high standard of safety; all the while further

improving our already high level of customer service for our travelling

clients.”

Helijet International Inc. is a Canadian-owned company and is North

America’s largest scheduled helicopter service, as well as a significant

provider to British Columbia’s air medical services. Helijet is celebrating

If you’ve ever been at YVR waiting for

a family member or friend arriving

on an international flight, you know

there can sometimes be a significant

delay between the time their flight

arrives and the time they enter the public

greeting area. This is because passengers

arriving on international flights must

travel from the gate to the Customs Hall,

complete border processes and collect

their luggage before they get to you.

Last December YVR introduced a

new service to allow arriving passengers

to post their name on a screen in the

public greeting area to let their party

know they’ve arrived. This new YVR

Greeter Information Board is the first of

its kind in Canada.

How does it work? Once passengers

clear the primary inspection line—the

row of booths at the entrance to the

Customs Hall where Customs Officers

check your passport—and enter the

Customs Hall, they can go to the 24-hour

Customer Information Counter, centrally

located between the baggage carousels,

and ask to have their name displayed

on the YVR Greeter Information Board

in the public area, where their greeter

will be waiting. Passengers can tell the

Customer Care Representative at the

counter how they would like their name

displayed and where they are arriving

from, and this information will be added

to the board.

Customer Information Counters are

equipped with 24-hour Language Line

Service and can provide translation in

more than 170 different languages for

passengers who may not speak English.

If you are a greeter waiting for your

passenger in the International Arrivals

area, you’ll be able to see your passenger’s

name, the city they have arrived from

and the time the information was posted

on the YVR Greeter Information Board,

which has labels and headings that

scroll between the six most commonly

requested languages at YVR: English,

French, Simplified Chinese, Japanese,

Korean and Punjabi.

As a greeter, it’s good to let your

passenger know before they arrive that

this service is available. As well, let them

know that they can look for a Customer

Care Representative in a red vest if they

need directions or assistance, or if they

if you get delayed in Customs and

Immigration or things do not go

according to plan.

9. Look for a Customer Care

Representative in a red vest or visit

one of the Customer Information

Counters in the Customs Hall if you

need help.

Tips for Travellers and Greeters

have trouble finding the Information Counter.

Another way you can prepare yourself if you’re meeting an international

passenger is to make sure you have their flight number and check the status of their

flight before you leave for the airport. You can do this by clicking on “Arrivals” on the

homepage of the YVR website—www.yvr.ca—or by phoning the airline. Have a plan

for getting in touch if things don’t go as planned, and be aware that border processes

for new immigrants, students and workers to Canada generally take more time.

Processes may also take longer during busy periods.

If you have questions or concerns while waiting for your passenger, talk to one of

our Customer Care Representatives at the 24-hour BC Visitor Centre, located in the

International Arrivals public greeting area.

Starting this month, British Airways

customers flying through and out

of London Heathrow will be able

to take two pieces of hand baggage on

board following the U.K. government’s

decision to lift restrictions.

Other U.K. airports where the

restrictions have been lifted are London

City, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow,

Manchester and Newcastle.

For now, the one bag limit remains in

place at Gatwick airport.

“This is great news for our customers

and it’s something we’ve been lobbying

for over the last year,” said Robert

Boyle, British Airways’ commercial

director. “It was a serious inconvenience

for passengers and didn’t make sense

because the U.K. was the only country to

impose the restrictions.

“Now we want to see the restrictions

lifted at Gatwick in line with other major

U.K. airports as quickly as possible.

We are working closely with the BAA

[British Airport Authority] and the DfT

[Department for Transport] towards

lifting the one-bag restriction as soon

as possible.”

With the lifting of restrictions, British

Airways customers’ hand baggage

allowance from U.K. airports and all

other worldwide airports are:

• One bag no bigger than 56

centimetres x 45 centimetres x

25 centimetres (including wheels,

pockets and handles);

• One briefcase or laptop-sized bag;

• A maximum hand baggage weight of

23 kilograms applies and customers

must be able to lift the bag into

the overhead lockers in the aircraft

cabin unaided.

• Restrictions still apply on the

quantity of liquids allowed through

U.K. airport security. All liquid

containers must not exceed 100

millilitres and must be carried in a

clear, re-sealable plastic bag that can

be easily closed.

For further information on British

Airways baggage allowances, visit

At the risk of incurring the

wrath of my colleagues in the

investment business, I believe

Canada’s annual RRSP (Registered

Retirement Savings Plan) season

is overly hyped. Scenarios from the

endless TV and newspaper ads show

“Professional Philip” carefully and

studiously preparing his financial plan,

or “Confused Cindy” struggling with the

complexity of the financial world before

being guided by her professional advisor

to financial utopia.

While I do believe that RRSPs

should be the foundation of everyone’s

financial and retirement plan, my issue

is with the timing, or rather what I

think should be the lack thereof. The

financial world makes a big deal about

making an RRSP contribution during the

months of January and February—RRSP

season. The reality is that a monthly

automatic investment program is far

more important. A ‘forced’ savings

program ensures that you pay yourself

first each month, eliminating the

need for a specified ‘season’ for RRSP

contributions.

As a financial advisor, all too often I

see thousands of hardworking Canadians

scrambling to contribute to their RRSPs

before the end of February. Some do

scratch together a few thousand dollars

from this or that and end up with

just that—a few thousand dollars. Year

after year, this pattern is repeated, with

contributors having $50,000 to $100,000

of unused RRSP contribution room and,

most importantly, an under-funded

retirement. Then, inevitably, they come

to see me when they are 50 or 55 in the

hope that I can solve their retirement

“problem” for them.

There is, however, a better way.

Most mutual fund companies offer

plans that make it easy for investors

to make regular contributions to

RRSPs. Pre-authorized chequing plans

(PACs) allow investors to set up an

investment program that purchases

fund units monthly, or quarterly. These

regular contributions can be withdrawn

directly from any account at a financial

institution.

There are several advantages to

making regular monthly contributions

to an RRSP. Firstly, it imposes a measure

of saving discipline. Think of these

contributions as your salary for your

retirement. It is surprising how quickly

a series of small contributions begin to

add up.

For example, in monthly contribu-

tions of $500 compounding at 10 per

cent on a tax-deferred basis, your invest-

ment would grow to $1,139,244 over

30 years.

Another advantage to making month-

ly contributions is the opportunity to

participate in a financial strategy known

as “dollar-cost averaging”. Experienced

investors know that predicting stock

market movement is very difficult.

“Ne’er a market timer be,” is my motto.

Dollar-cost averaging involves

selecting a mutual fund and purchasing

a fixed amount, e.g., $500 on a regular

basis, regardless of the price of the

fund. If the price of the fund goes down,

you will buy more of the selected fund,

strengthening your position when the

fund price rises again. When fund prices

rise, your current holdings benefit from

the increase in price. You can do much

better with this strategy compared to a

“lump-sum” purchase, particularly in a

‘choppy’ or ‘sideways’ market.

This strategy was particularly helpful

in 2002, as monthly investments made

in early June, July and October (the low

points of the year) actually showed a

profit by the end of 2002.

Very few investors are fortunate

enough to make all their investments

at the bottom of the equity cycle. As a

result, dollar-cost averaging is a valuable

tool for any investor. However, the dollar-

cost averaging strategy demands a long-

term commitment to the program.

There is a problem with this strategy,

though. Many investors tend to doubt

it at the worst possible time—during

a market correction. Last summer, the

phone lines at banks and investment

dealers were busy with calls from nervous

investors during the market correction,

with many investors cancelling their

automatic investment programs. This is

actually the time you should be adding

money to the account.

In my experience, when the market

takes a dip, and it is psychologically

painful to see that money pouring into

your sinking mutual fund, that is exactly

when you need to stay the course.

It’s RRSP ‘Season’: Forget about it!

The Canadian Transportation

Agency (CTA) has ruled on a

one-person-one-fare policy for

persons with severe disabilities who

travel within Canada by air. Domestic

airlines have one year to implement the

policy.

The decision means that for domestic

services, Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz and

WestJet may not charge more than one

fare for persons with disabilities who:

• are accompanied by an attendant

for their personal care or safety in

flight, as required by the carriers’

domestic tariffs, or

• require additional seating for

themselves, including those

determined to be functionally

disabled by obesity for purposes of

air travel.

The decision does not apply to:

• persons with disabilities or

others who prefer to travel with a

companion for personal reasons;

• persons with disabilities who

require a personal care attendant

at destination, but not in-flight;

and persons who are obese but not

disabled as a result of their obesity.

The airlines are expected to develop

a screening process to assess eligibility

under the one-person-one-fare policy.

For persons who travel with an

attendant as required by the carriers’

domestic tariffs, the decision notes that

carriers already perform assessments

and have screening mechanisms to

determine fitness and conditions for

travel. Their screening mechanisms

could be adapted to include functional

assessments, and related screening

expertise is available to them.

For persons disabled by obesity, the

CTA cited the practical experience of

Southwest Airlines, which screens for

entitlement to an additional seat by

determining whether a person can lower

the seat’s armrests.

The RBC Foundation Aviation

Library at the British Columbia

Institute of Technology’s

(BCIT) newly opened Aerospace

Technology Campus (ATC), is

accepting a unique gift: the Business

Council of British Columbia is

establishing an endowment in Jerry

Lampert’s name, as he prepares

to retire from his role as president

and chief executive officer of the

Council.

“The members of the Business

Council of B.C. have chosen to

recognize Jerry’s service and

commitment to the Council,

industry and education through this

endowment,” said Laurie Clarke, BCIT’s vice-president,

development, and executive director of the Foundation

and Alumni Association. “Jerry played an integral role

as campaign chair in the fundraising effort for our

new aerospace campus, and this legacy in his name is

a wonderful acknowledgment of his ongoing support

for BCIT.”

Lampert led BCIT’s Aerospace Technology Campus

Campaign Cabinet, helping to raise more than $12-

million from public and private sector donors. The new

ATC, located on Russ Baker Way in Richmond, officially

opened its doors at a ceremony in October.

The RBC Foundation Aviation Library holds one of

the largest collections of aviation resources in Western

Canada, and has become a centre of learning and study

for aviation students, staff and the broader aerospace

industry in the region. The Jerry Lampert Library

Endowment will address the challenge of acquiring

leading-edge materials, as funds accruing from the

endowment will support the purchase of reference

databases in online or CD-ROM format—strategic assets

that can grow as aerospace programming expands—as

well as rare books and special collections.

“We are thrilled that so many members of the

Council have come forward to recognize Jerry’s

accomplishments in such a way,” said Business Council

of B.C. chair, Larry Berg. “This is a unique opportunity

for us to not only show our appreciation for Jerry’s

work, but also celebrate his passion for the community

and for education.

To date, more than 40 companies and individuals

have supported the Jerry Lampert Library Endowment,

which currently stands at more than $160,000.

Established in 1966, the Business Council of British

Columbia is an association representing approximately

210 large and medium-sized enterprises. The Council’s

members are active in all major sectors of the provincial

economy. Taken together, the corporate members and

the associations affiliated with the Business Council

account for approximately one quarter of all jobs in

British Columbia.

WestJet is now an approved

airline for Hudson’s Bay

Company (Hbc), one of the

world’s oldest retailers.

WestJet’s approved supplier

relationship with Hbc allows the

airline to provide transportation and

group services to all of Hbc’s business

travellers, including The Bay, Zellers and

Home Outfitters. It also allows WestJet to

secure additional revenue by increasing

market share within Hbc’s domestic and

transborder business.

“Over the past 11 years, our

organization has grown into a leading,

national airline carrier,” said Duncan

Bureau, WestJet’s vice-president of sales.

“As we continue to expand our service

reach, we become an attractive option

for many national and multi-national

corporations. Hbc is one of the most

highly regarded organizations in Canada.

We look forward to working with such

an iconic institution and providing them

with our exceptional guest experience

and our own WestJet welcome when

they board.”

WestJet said it will leverage this

relationship to appeal to a broad range

of corporate business travellers—from

local to international organizations who

require a low-cost flight.

“Our merchants travel around the

world sourcing innovative products for

our retail stores,” said Robert Johnston,

president, Hbc. “Our new relationship

with WestJet provides Hbc with improved

prices for air travel, in addition to the

exceptional customer service for which

WestJet is renowned.”

The second production Airbus

A380 has been handed over to

Singapore Airlines, the first A380

operator, in line with the latest delivery

schedule. Equipped with four Rolls

Royce Trent 900 engines, the aircraft

follows delivery of the airline’s first

A380 that took place last October.

The second aircraft is fitted with

the same spacious and luxurious cabin-

interior Singapore Airlines revealed on

delivery of their first A380, and features

471 seats in three classes.

It will join the first aircraft, which

has been operating daily scheduled

service between Singapore and Sydney,

operating around 15 hours per day with

100 per cent technical reliability for

more than two months.

At the end of 2007, the first Singapore

Airlines A380 had accumulated more

than 130 flights and around 950 flight

hours. The aircraft has been acknowl-

edged as meeting, and often exceeding,

the commitments made by Airbus to its

customers in terms of range, fuel burn,

noise, and cabin comfort.

Being greener, cleaner, quieter and

smarter, the A380 is already setting

new standards for air transport and the

environment. The A380 consumes less

than three litres per passenger per 100

kilometres. Its new-generation engines and

aerodynamic performance mean that the

A380 not only complies with today’s noise

limits, it is also significantly quieter than

any other large aircraft flying today and

produces only half as much noise on take-

off and landing than the former largest

commercial aircraft.

The A380 has the quietest cabin in

the sky, offers comfort in every class

and more space for all. The aircraft’s

efficiency and advanced technologies

result in outstanding economics,

superior performance and high

operational flexibility.

The A380 also provides extra

passenger capacity without increasing

the number of flights. Compared to the

former largest commercial aircraft, the

A380 seats more than 40 per cent more

passengers in a typical three-class, 525-

seat configuration—with seat-mile costs

20 per cent lower and range capability

over 1,852 kilometres longer.

The first airline in the world to fly the new Airbus A380 –Singapore Airlines – donated all proceeds from the sale of tickets on the first

flight to charities.

This month, WestJet begins its

direct service from Vancouver

to Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island.

The new seasonal non-stop route via

a Boeing 737 will operate Thursdays

and Sundays, departing Vancouver on

WS0930 at 6:30 p.m., arriving in Kona

at 10:58 p.m. Flights from Kona depart

on WS0931 at 11:59 p.m., arriving in

Vancouver at 7:38 a.m. (next day).

“WestJet is quickly becoming the

airline of choice for Canadians travelling

to Hawaii,” said Bob Cummings,

WestJet executive vice-president, guest

experience and marketing. “Our flights

to Hawaii have increased to 21 flights

weekly from 14 last winter and we also

have improved schedules for our guests’

convenience.”

Famous for the active Kilauea

Volcano, and extraordinary for the

11 different climate zones, travellers

enjoy a bit of everything on Hawaii’s Big

Island—from lush rain forests to arid

deserts, and from black sand beaches to

snow-capped mountains.

Kona offers unbelievable biking trails

through rocky gullies; nature hikes or

4x4 tours in lush rainforest that harbour

exotic birds and flowers; killer waves for

surfing and beautiful bays for kayaking,

with views of breathtaking beaches

perfect for relaxing and watching

sunsets.

Cargojet plans to add two

Boeing 767-200 Extended

Range (ER) freight aircraft to

its fleet. The addition of this aircraft

type is a major step in the company’s

ongoing aircraft fleet renewal and

cargo growth plans.

The 767-200ER have a maximum

structural payload of 45,359

kilograms, an increase of 67 per cent

as compared to the current B727-

200 advanced freighter aircraft, and

will allow further expansion with a

maximum range of 9,260 kilometres.

“We are very excited to be the

first Canadian air cargo operator to

introduce these newer generation,

longer range, and more fuel-efficient

aircraft to our fleet,” said Ajay K.

Virmani, president and CEO of

Cargojet. “The addition of these

aircraft will allow us to continue

to meet the growing requirements

of our domestic overnight network

and continue to provide value-added

services to our customers. This will

also allow Cargojet to further expand

into selected international markets.”

The aircraft are tentatively

scheduled to be introduced into

service in the second and third quarter

of 2008.

Cargojet operates its network

across North America transporting

more than 381,000 kilograms of

time-sensitive air cargo each business

night, utilizing a fleet of 20 all-cargo

aircraft.

A consortium of Canadian and

South African entrepreneurs

has joined forces to create a

multifaceted destination on the golden

beaches of Belize. Following the success

of the founding pilot project, ‘Belizean

Dreams’, the development group has

embarked on a second project, Hopkins

Bay Resort, which consists of private

ocean-front villas that will offer five-star

comfort beside the longest barrier reef

in the Western Hemisphere.

“Hopkins Village is an oceanside

fishing community in an incredible

tropical location,” said Rob Wilcox,

director of sales for the resort. “As

the resort is developed, the area

will have all the amenities of home.

Canadians are very interested in

Belize as an investment opportunity.

Belize itself is reason enough to

make the trip, but when you combine

that with an ownership opportunity,

people really get excited about the

possibilities.”

Belize is particularly attractive to

North American investors and vacation

home seekers because of its stable,

democratic government, easy access

from many major centers in North

America and abroad and the fact that

it is the only officially English-speaking

country in Central America. Belize was a

British colony for more than a century

and was known as British Honduras

until 1973. Since gaining independence

in 1981, it has remained a member of

the Commonwealth.

“The idea is to not only bring

the tourist traveller to Belize but to

encourage and promote commercial

enterprise in the country as well,” said

Wilcox. “South Africans and Canadians

have a keen interest in the Caribbean

and they represent a strong market for

investment in Belize.”

Vancouver-based Belize specialist,

Island Expeditions Company, offers

adventure trips to Belize that include sea

kayaking along one of the Caribbean’s

richest tropical marine environments,

and the opportunity to explore

the limestone caverns of the Mayan

underworld. The trips take place from

December and April via Continental

Airlines with an overnight stop in

Houston, Texas. For more details, visit

Visible from outer space, the Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef Atoll, Belize, is close to being a perfectly circular hole 304.8 metres in diameter and 125 metres deep.
