Dear Museum Traveler, The inaugural World Leaders Symposium in 2006, led by such luminaries as

Mikhail Gorbachev and Lech Walesa, was a remarkably successful new endeavor

in educational travel. This fall, embark on another exceptional learning program

on our 2007 World Leaders Symposium: Venice and the Dalmatian Coast. Join

a panel of eminent speakers, among them:

• Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State

• William Perry, former U.S. Secretary of Defense

• Peter Galbraith, former U.S. Ambassador

• Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland

Beautiful and culturally diverse, the Balkans almost seem too exquisite a

setting for some of the world’s most turbulent conflicts. Traveling along the

rugged, pristine Dalmatian Coast, learn about the breakup of Yugoslavia and

the Kosovo crisis in the 1990s, examining the relevance of these events on

today’s delicate sociopolitical climate.

Gather in Venice, Italy, to board the elegant Le Diamant and cruise through

Croatia’s dramatic Kornati Islands and to Mostar, site of the recently restored

Stari Most bridge. Continue to cosmopolitan Dubrovnik and witness the work

of an organization building cross-border institutions that help rival ethnic

clans coexist.

Sail into the dramatic triple bay of Kotor, and wend along spectacular

coastlines, delving into centuries of history along the way. In multicultural

Sarajevo, see striking examples of mosques, synagogues, and cathedrals; then

call at infamous Sniper’s Alley. In Split, relish a visit to the monumental

Diocletian’s Palace, then meet with local dignitaries. Finally, spend a day on

the Croatian island gem of Hvar before returning to Venice for a final session.

Relish the opportunity to engage in dialogues and group sessions with

distinguished statesmen who played key roles brokering peace during

Yugoslavia’s breakup, along with leading academics who have closely studied

the region. Visits to the actual sites of many dramatic events in this still-

seldom visited part of the world enhance this rare educational travel program.

Join us on this peerless exploration of complex history amid stunning

landscapes.

Warm regards,

Alicia V. Stevens Director, AMNH Expeditions American Museum of Natural History
