8 The community newspaper - the glue that helps hold a community^ together, and the spur that helps keep it moving forward. ^

Too close toLast week, when a young man wearing a mask and carrying a

rifle was caught on campus, St. John's University in Queenswent into a lockdown. Everyone began to play the roles forwhich they had rehearsed, hoping never having to play them.

All over campus, administrative assistants went into action, locking the doors of their departments and checking on faculty andstaff inside, keeping them updated and calling to cancel classes.

Each of them was a hero, like the security guard and policecadet who actually caught the young man. No one knew for sureat the time if other shooters were involved, or if the young man, like the attacker at Virginia Tech, was acting alone.

The university's new text messaging system, much like thoserecently acquired by local school systems, went into action.Since that date, many others have signed up. Law enforcementshowed up en masse, backing up the university's professionalsecurity staff. And a grateful community gathered for morningmass at the Roman Catholic university on the following day, togive thanks that everyone Had been saved, and that the youngman, a freshman, will now receive treatment.

Senator Charles Schumer has again begun a push for federallegislation that will help keep firearms out of the hands of thementally ill. Reportedly, this young man's illness was triggeredby the anxieties of 9/11. Other attacks have come from bitteryoung individuals who wanted revenge from bullies. Our localschools are working hard to break the patterns of bullying andgang activities that lead to violence. Indeed one kind word canliterally stop a bullet.

The language of loveHis father was shot by Nationalists during the Spanish Civil

War, and his only son died as the result of a fall, but Spanish pro-fessor and poet Odon Betanzos Palacios, who died last week, never became bitter.

Instead, he became a kind of ambassador, sincerely loved byhis friends, those who represent a multitude of Spanish-speakingcountries in the Royal Spanish Academy of the SpanishLanguage. Together, they worked on revamping the official dic-tionary and grammar, proving that language is not just a sciencebut also an art. He had been one of the founders of the NorthAmerican Academy of the Spanish Language of which he servedas director for 28 years, and was the moving force behind itsjoining the worldwide association.

Back home in the little village where he was born, three days ofofficial mourning were declared. A foundation has been set up inhis memory to care for children, the elderly and abandoned ani-mals by him and his wife, Amalia Betanzos, former New York Citycommissioner of education and retired head of the WildcatAcademy. (This is a New York City charter school that offers asecond chance for students who have had difficulty in other highschools.)

Calling him "a good man and a great poet," the Spanish artistCristobal Tobar chose him as a model for a likeness ofChristopher Columbus, displayed in the monastery of La Rabida, that commemorates the voyage of discovery from the port ofPalos over 500 years ago.

He could not have chosen a better one.

FINEST VS. BRAVEST: The Freeport Police Benevolent Association played the Freeport FireDepartment in a softball game on Friday, September 21. The game was played under thelights at Randall Park in Freeport. Last year, the two teams split a doubieheader and decidedthis year that one nine-inning game would decide who had bragging rights. The Freeport PBAjumped out to an early lead but the fire department did not give up. They battled back andmade it a close game. Unfortunately for the fire department, the Freeport PBA prevailed, in ahard-fought and offensive game, 24-18. The game was well attended on a great night andboth teams wish to thank all the fans who came out and cheered.

GETTING LOST, OR NOT ...Whenwe purchased our most recent car, we hada decision to make. Should we or shouldwe not buy a vehicle that included a glob-al positioning System device (GPS)?

We decided against that purchase forseveral reasons. One, we know how toread a map, and two, when we are travel-ing in a truly unfamiliar location, we areprobably going to be in a rented car.

Every so often, however, our daughter, who has snch a device in her car, com-ments that we should have bought one, especially when I mention that we some-how found ourselves off the beaten pathwhen we took a day trip locally.

Since my husband's retirement, wehave done a lot of that. There are so manyplaces both in the city and in the sur-rounding metropolitan areas that we havewanted to see, but never had the time toinvestigate. Often, when there is nothingpending on either of our schedules, we'lltake out a map, pick a place, and set outSince we don't have a GPS, sometimesour trips take us farther afield than weintended.

Now, we have another opportunity tomake the same decision. Our daughterpurchased a portable GPS to take with heron business trips to cities in the UnitedStates with which she is unfamiliar.Landing in a strange city and renting a carwith which she is also unfamiliar are chal-lenging enough, she says. She likes beingable to drive to her hotel or to a client'soffice without having to worry aboutdirections.

For us, then, the decision has resur-faced. Does it make sense for us to buy aportable GPS for those few times when

we are truly stymied? After all, wealready have a built-in compass in the carand knowing north, south, east and westusually is sufficient guidance. The onlytime mat compass failed us was once inConnecticut when it suddenly stoppedworking. I retrieved the owner's manualfrom the glove compartment and began tolaugh when I read the directions.

'"What's so funny?" my husband asked. Then, he, too, began to laugh as I readfrom the manual.

"If 'C appears on the display becauseof a drastic change in the magnetic field, perform circling calibration. Drive thevehicle in a circle at 5 mph. If there is notenough space to drive in a circle, drivearound the block. After driving one tothree circles in the above method, calibra-tion is completed when the direction isshown on the display."

Once back on track, however, we madeout just fine, but I must admit that therehave been times when we have wanderedsomewhat aimlessly. It's usually all rightif streets, highways and parkways arestraight and perpendicular to each other, but it's those diagonal, rambling countryroads that are a challenge.

On the other hand, getting somewhatlost has provided us with some of our bestexcursions. Robert Frost speaks of "TheRoad Not Taken," and it is those seldomtraveled by-ways that have provided uswith some of our greatest delights.

In Northern California as we toured thewine country aad headed west toward theRussian River Valley, we probably shouldhave taken the more traveled road. Butthat would have prevented us from arriv-ing at the road that led up to the highest

cliff with a view of the crashing waves ofthe Pacific onto Bodego Bay.

Out on eastern Long Island, we havehad some of our loveliest meanderingswhen we didn't know exactly where wewere going. With two cars in our house-hold, it seems as if we were always leav-ing the Suffolk Hagstrom's map in the carsitting in the driveway.

That shouldn't really have been a prob-lem except for the feet that the numerousNorth Shore coves often made it impossi-ble to get from Point A to Point B direct-ly. Following roads labeled "Main Street5'mat peter out, or "Beach Road" whichsuddenly turns Inland to avoid a lavishestate, haven't always proved efficient, but I doubt if a GPS would respond to therequest to program us to snoop among therich and famous.

Out on the north fork at the east end,we used to travel the main road throughLong Island's wine country until we gotfed up with the traffic that always seemsto back up at the Riverhead rotary. Nowwe drive farther north and try to take adifferent road back down to the mainroad once we are past that bottleneck.

Doing this over the years, we havebecome first-hand observers of the resi-dential and commercial development thatis fast changing this rural farmland, aphenomenon that is finally being cur-tailed by governmental funding to pre-serve open space.

It is on those trips, however, that weoften come upon a different flower nurs-ery or farm stand. It is wandering like thisthat allows us to see buffalo grazing, def-initely an unexpected sight Driving downthe by-ways during different seasons alsoprovides us with landscapes that rival the

Impressionists like Monet and Van Goghwhen we observe acres of orchardsprogress from a panorama of pastelspring blossoms to trees laden with fruitin late summer and fall. It is by gettingsomewhat lost that we are able to discov-er a secluded beach where we can stop towalk barefoot in the surf or find a smallold-fashioned hardware store frequentedby the locals.

When we were younger parents, ourdaughter, who now travels around theworld on business herself, would alwaysget nervous if she sensed that we didn'tknow exactiy where we were. "Are welost?" she would query, concern in hervoice.

"We're not lost," I would reply. "We'rejust not sure exactly where we are."

And it is that sense of wonder, to sud-denly come upon an antique fair, a farm-ers' market - even a rodeo as we did inCalifornia - that I am concerned wewould lose if we purchased a GPS.

Of course, we could decide to use aGPS only when we were truly lost, but Iknow how these new-fangled gadgetswork. When is the last time anyone stoodup to change a channel on the television? How quickly did microwave become anessential part of meal time preparation?

When did everyone suddenly stopfocusing on the person or situation infront of them to become, instead, engagedin constant disruptive conversations on acell phone? Intended or not, electronicsintrude, first subtly and then dramatically,to change our patterns of living.

'To buy or not to buy?" that is the ques-tion. How much do I want to savor thejourney and not simply arrive at the desti-nation?
