L’ENVOI (Enhanced)by Ed Welch, Peninsula Camera Club
This is based on Rudyard Kipling’s poem of that name which describes what would happen when“earth’s last picture is painted.” Ed Welch has used L’Envoi as a model to express his feelings betweenfilm and digital photography.
When earth’s last photo is taken, and film is a thing of the past,When Kodak and Fuji are busted and the world is no longer vast,We shall mourn for we no longer savor seeing life as it really is.A video screen we will favor. That’s soda without any fizz. But those of us who remember the view of the world through a lensAgain will set out with ardor with our Brownies or big eight by tens. We’ll relish the click of the shutter as we carfully frame in a scene. And irreversibly capture an image of something that’s been.
But once that image is doctored, can it really be what we once saw?Or is it a beautiful picture that you with electrons did draw? The role of the camera’s been lessened, the eye of the taker’s a laugh. As a photo it’s no long valid. It’s an image but no photograph.
“Bee” by Stephen Sarhad of Marin PhotographyClub; Winner Pictorial B Projected Images
CONGRATULATIONS TON4C FOR ITS FIRST
COMPLETED PROJECTEDIMAGES COMPETITION!
Yes, we’ve done it and it went quite well. There are still logistical areas that need work, such as setting up the two projectors in the cor-rect places. On the very bright side, both thedigital projector and the slide projector govebright clean images. It was hard to tell at timeswhether we were looking at electronic imagesor slides. Larry Salveson’s program worked wellfor ordering the winners, but some tweaking

Secretary’s Report: In the future, a charge of$5 will be applied to all non-N4C clubsrequesting a copy of the Judges List as well asfor extras to member clubs.
Treasurer’s Report: As a cost-saving venture, all images, whether print or projected, will beprovided cards for awards instead of ribbons(when the ribbons run out). The chairs wereasked to do an inventory of ribbons remaining.
Judges’ honorarium was increased to $25with Board approval.
Since anticipated expenditures would reducethe checking account to under $100, it wasdetermined to sponsor a fund-raising seminarthis year. The committee consists of Joe Hearst,Dick Stahlke and Joan Field.
Vice-President’s Report: It will be necessaryto change the venue of the Annual Luncheonnext year as the hotel has been purchased byHilton and is asking an additional $2600 justfor set-up fees.
Competition Chairs: New Print Chairs areGene Morita, Dorothy Weaver and GloriaFraser of Marin with the possible help ofAmory Donaldson of Diablo Valley.
Electronic Image Collector: The projectedimages competition date was set for Jan 21; arequest to extend the time in February to the25th was approved. Since we are in the throesof our first projected images contests, it wasthought that more time might be needed to get
everything organized. The joint competitions have been going
smoothly at the club level; some are using LarrySalveson’s program which still needs sometweaking.
Nature: Mary Toalson of Millbrae has volun-teered to become the new Nature Chair, asSiegfried Arndt would not be available for mostof the competitions.
Foto Fanfare: The January issue with all thefirst place winners in liviing color was passedout. You can download it from www.n4c.org.
In the future to save the costs on the colorlaserwriting printing, the Foto Fanfare will carryonly the pictures of the Projected Images andPrints of the Year. The remaining winning imageswill be on display at the website.
PSA: There will be a Fall Chapter Rally at theend of October, with marvelous Steve Traudtpresenting photographic wisdom both Saturdayand Sunday. More about this soon!
April 2 is the Yerba Buena Spring Chapterpresentation. Gary Crabbe will give an all-dayseminar at the Centra Park Community Center inSan Mateo (see registration form on page 11).
FotoClave: Because of poor attendance,FotoClave showed a deficit, so no monies willbe available to the Councils. The questionsremained (1) Will FotoClave continue? (2) If so,how often will it be held? (3) Should we contin-ue to share the workload with the otherCouncils?
The next scheduled FotoClave is in the fall of2007 and N4C would be running it, if it isagreed to fall back to a single Council incharge.
Suggestion: The N4C delegates should berecognized at the Annual Banquet.

still needs to be done. We need to be able tomove the thumbnails around to reflect the win-ning order. Slides are much the same as ever, and the winners are placed in the slide tray inthe usual reverse order to be shown.
The comparison between the slides andelectronic images was acceptable. A smalllight box was placed next to the laptop so thejudge could look first at one and then at theother. Using a loupe or blowing up the imageon the laptop gave good views of both.
Every repetition will help smooth out thelogistical obstacles and move the processalong more quickly.
Of interest, there were 45 slides entered inPictorial and 29 EIs; in Travel: 34 slides and28 EIs, and in Journalism, 29 slides and 17electronic images.
Additional clubs will be entering projectedimages at the next go-round.
