Pelton’s. leadership, the University has increased its academic profile, successfully.. employing.strategies.to.attract.the.best.faculty.and.the.brightest.. students. from. the. state,. the. nation. and. the. world.. Since. 2001,. Willamette. University. has. been. ranked. a. top. tier. liberal. arts. college.by.U.S..News.and.World.Report..President.Pelton.holds. a. doctorate. from. Harvard. Stadium. is. . anartificial turf facility that is one of the topNCAA Division III facilities in the Pacific Northwest.. It. combines. the. closeness. and.atmosphere. of . an. old-time. stadium. with.such modern elements as FieldTurf for the playing. surface,. spacious. locker. rooms. anda.variety.of .meeting.rooms. The stadium seats approximately 2,400fans.. All. seating. is. covered,. providing. fanswith. comfortable. setting. even. in. inclement.weather. The press box, located above theseating. area,. was. designed. with. plenty. of .room. for. coaches,. media. representatives.and. the. statistical. crew.. It. also. includes. a.booth. for. the. public. address. announcerand official timer, as well as a booth for the Willamette’s. president. to. host. a. variety. ofsupporters.and.dignitaries. With lights surrounding the field, the Bearcats. have. been. able. to. add. another.element. to. Willamette. football. with. nightgames since 2004. The Bearcats also play afternoon. games. to. take. advantage. of . thesunny.skies.during.most.of .the.season.. Another. advantage. is. that. the. stadium.includes. an. athletic. training. room,. allowing.Willamette. athletes. to. receive. treatmentson-site.. Bearcat. football. coaches. haveoffice space at the stadium in addition tooffices at the Sparks Center on campus. Last season, Willamette finished with a3-2. record. at. home,. losing. only. to. NCAAPlayoff qualifiers Mary Hardin-Baylor andLinfield. The Bearcats scored 165 points athome.for.33.0.points.per.game.. McCulloch. Stadium. also. features. theCharles Bowles Track, an all-weather facility that. is. the. home. for. Willamette’s. highly-regarded men’s and women’s track and field teams. The track also provides a great place for the finish of home cross country meets.In. 2005,. Willamette. hosted. and. won. theNorthwest.Conference.and.NCAA.Regionalmeets.in.men’s.and.women’s.cross.country.
The entire complex, which also includesRoy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium for baseball,is adjacent to Bush’s Pasture Park. Willamette’s. efforts. on. the. gridiron. have. led. to.a. 25-15. overall. record. the. past. four. years. and.the Bearcats have finished above .500 eight times during the past 10 seasons. The team highlightedthe.decade.with. a. 13-1. record. and. a. trip. to. the.NAIA.National.Championship.game.in.1997,.in.the final year before Willamette went to NCAADivision.III. Willamette was 5-4 last season. The Bearcatsachieved a 3-1 record and a second place finishin.the.Northwest.Conference. The Bearcats will be led by 16 returning starters,.with.seven.starters.back.on.offense.and.nine. starters. remaining. on. defense.. Willamettealso.returns.its.place-kicker,.punter,.long.snapperand.top.punt.return.specialist. Willamette suffered significant losses on offense,.where.the.top.two.standouts.completed.their. eligibility. last. fall.. Quarterback. Cameron.Walton, a Second Team All-NWC selection,completed.71.of . 134.passes. (53.0%). for. a. total.of . 847. yards. and. four. touchdowns.. Running.back. Quentin. The Bearcats also lost two offensive linemen.from.the.2005.starting.lineup.. The defense sustained only two losses among the. starters,. but. both. were. key. players.. Medgy.Khoury. led. the. Willamette. linebacking. corps.with. a. team-high. 83. total. tackles. on. 23. solostops and 60 assists. He was named First Team All-Northwest Conference. Tim Alton registered 58.total.tackles,. including.24.solo.tackles.and.34assists,.as.the.team’s.free.safety.
Offense. Without. Walton. at. quarterback,. the. offense.has. to. reset,. with. junior. Kevin. Whipps. and.sophomore. Grant. Leslie. battling. to. take. over.as. the. offensive. signal. caller.. Whipps. played.in. four.games. last. season,.but.did.not. start..He.completed.11.of .25.passes.(44.0%).for.188.yards.and two touchdowns. Leslie is seeking his first action on the field for the Bearcats. The stadium alsoincludes typical features suchas showers and restrooms,plus offices for coaches, a video room, meeting rooms and a training room. From the start of preseason until the end of the year, the Willamette locker room is a key part of Bearcat Football.

The Bearcats, who were comingoff a 7-4 season in which they lost in the first round.of . the.2004.NCAA.Division. III.nationalplayoffs,. were. in. search. of . a. new. identity. for. ateam.with.many.freshmen.and.sophomores. After losing their first three games of the season,. the. young. Bearcats. found. their. way,. as.players.stepped.up.to. lead.the.team.to.a.second.place finish in the Northwest Conference and to. within. a. game. of . a. second. straight. nationalplayoff .appearance. Willamette rattled off five straight victories after.those.three.losses,.and.for.the.third.straight.year they met Linfield in the final week of theregular.season.with.the.NWC.title.on.the.line...
