Colby-Sawyer Alpine Ski Racing PreviewThe Colby-Sawyer women’s alpine skiing team finished 4th in both the giant slalom National Championship race and the slalom National Championship race at Sugarloaf last year. “Fourth is the nation is great for last year, but we’re looking higher than that this year,” said second year Head Coach Danny Noyes.

This year’s team will be led by junior captains Kaitlin Hull (Center Harbor/Mt. Washington Valley) and Allyson Newell (Bethlehem/Franco-nia Ski Club). Kaitlin finished last year as a 2nd team All-American for Giant Slalom and also for her combined performance at the National Championships. Allyson finished 2nd team All-American for Giant Slalom, Slalom, and combined performance. “These two women are going to be great leaders on a young, talented team this year,” remarked Coach Noyes.

The other two juniors on the team are Meredith Gadd (West Newbury, Mass./Gould Academy) and Phoebe Wolcott-MacCausland (Enosburg Falls, Vt.). Phoebe had her strongest finish of the regular season at Mount Sunapee in Colby-Sawyer’s home meet, finishing 12th overall in the Giant Slalom. Phoebe also pitched in during the National Championships finishing 32nd overall in the Giant Slalom.

There are three sophomores on this year’s team. Dylan Zarrett (New York, NY) and Sydney

Leonardi (Kennebunk, Maine/Worcester Academy) return looking to make a contribu-tion this season. Rounding out the sophomore class is Chelsea Gill (S. Burlington, Vt.) who had her top finish last year at the Ascutney meet during the regular season finishing 14th overall in slalom. She also contributed at the Eastern Regional’s, finishing 20th in the Giant Slalom.

There are also four freshmen looking to add into the mix for Head Coach Danny Noyes this season. Molly Macleod (Franconia/Franco-nia Ski Club), Amy MacMahon (Unity/Proc-tor Academy), and Lauren D’Allessandro (Kingston, Mass./New Hampton) all come to Colby-Sawyer from nearby New Hampshire ski schools. Montana Molyneux (Inglewood, Canada/Ontario Development Team) comes from a respected Canadian ski school, and also plays for the volleyball team at Colby-Sawyer.

On the men’s side, the Chargers are looking to better their 4th place finish in the slalom and their 17th place finish in the Giant Slalom at the National Championships last year. “We started out strong in the GS, but then we had 4 of our 5 competitors crash in their 2nd run,” said Coach Noyes.

Senior captains Ryan Dunstan (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Tyler Judkins (Farmington, Maine) look to lead this team to a better finish at the

National Championships. Dunstan was 2nd team All-Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference last year in the Giant Slalom. Dunstan had his best regular season finish coming in 3rd at Waterville Valley in the Giant Slalom. He also had the best Giant Slalom finish for Colby-Sawyer, coming in 20th overall.

The other two seniors on the team are Chance Longley (S. Londonderry, Vt./Stratton Mt. School) and Pearson Neal (Ludlow, Vt./Okemo Mt. School). “Pearson came back strong last year after a leg injury two years ago that side-lined him,” said Coach Noyes. Neal took home 2nd team All-American status last year finishing 12th in the slalom. Longley was 2nd team All-Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference in slalom and for combined finishing 4th in the Giant Slalom and 12th in slalom. Longley finished 35th over-all in the slalom at the National Championships.

There are two juniors on the men’s ski team this year, Sean Wheeler (West Falls, N.Y./NYSEF) and Jake Palmer (East Wakefield/Mt. Wash-ington Valley). “Sean’s one of the best athletes on this team. He needs to step up this year and come through with some good finishes,” said Coach Noyes. Wheeler took home his best finishes last year in both the slalom and Giant Slalom at Ascutney Mountain, finishing 6th and 7th overall respectively. Palmer also posted his best finish at Ascutney Mountain, finishing 21st in the slalom.

Sophomores on the team are Ben Burns (Yar-mouth, Maine/Carrabassett Valley Academy) and Travis Plass (Claverack, N.Y./Carrabassett Valley Academy). Burns had his best finish last year at Pat’s Peak, finishing 11th in the slalom. Plass had an incredible six top 10 finishes last year, posting 2 wins during the regular season. In the Regional Championships, he finished 4th in slalom, and 6th in Giant Slalom, earning him First Team All-Eastern Collegiate Ski Confer-ence in slalom and in combined and 2nd team All-Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference for Giant Slalom.

Freshman joining this year’s squad are Charles Benoit-Blouin (Quebec, Canada/Carrabassett Valley Academy), Brian Gudolawicz (Wey-mouth, Mass./Gould Academy), and Albert Torres (Mountaintop, Pa.).

Head Coach Danny Noyes

After a successful first season with the Colby-Sawyer Men’s and Women’s Alpine Ski Team, second year coach

Danny Noyes will again lead a talented group of skiers on the slopes of New England.

Last season, Noyes and the Chargers placed second for men and third for women in the regular season MacConnell Divi-sion series. For the past nine seasons Colby-Sawyer has quali-fied for the USCSA National Championship series, and this past winter Noyes led five CSC athletes to USCSA All-Ameri-can status, as well as two USCSA Academic All-Americans. Both the men’s and women’s teams fared well at the champi-onship series held at Sugarloaf USA, ME, with a fourth place

slalom finish for the men’s team and fourth place slalom and giant slalom finishes for the women’s team.

Before coming to Colby-Sawyer, Noyes spent two seasons as an assistant ski coach at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., where he also was an assistant coach with the football program. Prior to his arrival at St. Lawrence, Noyes was an assistant ski coach with Colby College in Waterville, Maine and an assistant football coach with Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt.. Both the Colby and St. Lawrence Ski Teams are members of the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA). In addition to coaching experience, Noyes holds a USSA Referee Certification and is the President of the MacConnell Division of USCSA.

While at St. Lawrence University, Noyes earned a Masters of Education degree in May, 2005. He received a Bach-elor of Arts degree from Colby College with a major in sociology and a minor in education in May of 2002.

Danny and his fiancee Erin, both natives of North Conway, N.H., currently reside in New London.
