Stanford Records Best Record Since 2001Stanford's five overall wins and four victories in the Pac-10 Conference are the most since the Cardinal went 9-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play in 2001 … Stanford has gone 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the Pac-10 in each of the last two years … A Cardinal win in The Big Game would give Stanford five Pac-10 wins, equaling the number of conference wins the Cardinal recorded in the last three years (2002-04)
November 19 at Stanford StadiumNovember 19 is an historic day in Big Game history … The first Big Game played in Stanford Stadium was held on November 19, 1921 and the last Big Game played in Stanford Stadium, before a major renovation takes place, will be this Saturday, November 19, 2005 … A week later, following Stanford's game with Notre Dame on November 26, renovation will begin on the 84-year old stadium … Built in 1921 at an estimated cost of $200,000, Stanford Stadium hosted its first game on November 19 in the 27th Big Game … While Stanford did score the first touchdown in the new stadium, the Bears went on to win the game easily, 42-7.
Cardinal Leads Big Game Series 54-42-11 The Cardinal and Golden Bears have met 107 times on the gridiron, with Stan-ford holding a 54-42-11 advantage ... The Cardinal has won seven of the last 10 games with Cal and 11 of the last 16 from 1989-04, but the Bears have won the last three, including last year's 41-6 win at Memorial Stadium … The Cardinal has won four of the last five Big Games played in Stanford Stadium … The Big Game is tied for the 10th longest rivalry in college football … Stanford and Cal have met every year since 1892 with the exception of 1915-18 and 1943-45 … Since 1961, Stanford leads the series 29-13-1 … Only 78 points separates the two teams in the previous 107 meetings.
Big Game StreaksStanford holds the Big Game record for consecutive wins at seven (1995-2001), but the Bears have won the last three (2002-04) and are attempting to beat the Cardinal four straight seasons for the first time since 1936-39 … Stanford's seven game streak broke its previous Big Game record of six consecutive wins, which was established from 1961-66 … Calʼs longest winning streak in The Big Game is five from 1919-23.
Close Calls in The Big GameThe Stanford-California rivalry has proven to be one of the most exciting in
2005 Stanford Cardinal Football 2005 Stanford Cardinal Football
college football since it began in 1892 ... Of the 107 games, an amazing 50 have been decided by seven points or less, with Stanford holding a 23-16-11 advan-tage in those games ... Even more impressive, 29 Big Games have been decided by three points less, with Stanford enjoying a 10-8-11 edge … The Big Game has also produced an NCAA-best five "cliffhangers," which are games decided on the final play (1972, 1974, 1982, 1990, 2000).

Cardinal-Oregon State: Reviewing Last Week's Game• Stanford snapped a four game losing streak to the Beavers by beating OSU for the first time since 1999.• The Cardinal trailed early 7-0, but scored 17 straight points on the strength of two Trent Edwards-to-Justin McCullum touchdown passes.• Stanford's defense limited OSU to just 10 points, 62 net yards rushing and 16-for-40 passing.• McCullum had seven catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns, all of which came in the first half.
Head Coach Walt Harris In eight seasons at Pitt, Walt Harris turned the Panthers into a perennial bowl contender and among the top programs in the country … He led Pitt to six bowl games in eight seasons, including the last five, and a first-ever BCS bowl (Fiesta) following the 2004 campaign … He was named Stanford's head coach on December 13, 2004 … Harris, a Bay Area native, has coached for over 30 years, including 11 as a head coach … His career record stands at 68-72, which includes a 52-44 record at Pitt, three years at UOP (1989-91), where the Tigers improved each season under Harris, and 5-4 at Stanford … Harris has coached
Big Game History
• Close Series: Only 78 points sep-arates the two teams in their previous 104 games … Stanford has scored 1,725 points to the Bears 1,647.
• The Axe: To the winner of the Big Game goes “The Axe”… The Axe made its first appearance at a Stanford-Cal baseball game on April 13, 1899, but it wasnʼt until 1933 that the two univer-sities decided that The Axe would be a trophy given to the winner of The Big Game.
• Series History: The Big Game was interrupted from 1915-18 and again from 1943-45 (World War II) … When the two schools disagreed over fresh-man eligibility, athletic relations were severed from 1915-18 … Stanfordʼs “Big Game” became their annual rugby match with Santa Clara.
• The First Big Game: The first Big Game was played on March 10, 1892 at the Haight Street Grounds in San Fran-cisco … Cal had fielded a team for 10 years, but for upstart Stanford Univer-sity, which opened on October 1, 1891, this was to be their first intercollegiate football game … Stanford pulled off the upset, beating the more experienced Bears 14-10.
• First Big Game Crowd: An overflow crowd of 20,000 witnessed the first Big Game … Stanford's manager was Her-bert Hoover, later to become the 31st President of the United States.
• The Immortal Twenty-One: A group of Stanford students added to Big Game lore by stealing the Axe at Cal's annual Axe Rally on April 3, 1930. The Axe, which had been in a bank vault for 31 years, was now in possession of the Im-mortal Twenty-One. When the students returned to campus, the celebration began. Classes were canceled for two days and the University presented each member of the Immortal twenty-One with a block "S" letter.

at Ohio State, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan State and Cal along with a three-year stint with the New York Jets … In the last five seasons at Pitt, Harris' teams went 39-23, won at least seven games each year and advanced to a bowl game each season.
A Look Back: Cal 41, Stanford 6, November 20, 2004Cal won its third straight Big Game in impressive fashion as it beat the Cardinal 41-6 at Memorial Stadium … It was the Bear's largest margin of victory in the Big Game since 1930 … The Bears held a slim 10-3 lead at halftime, but ex-tended to 20-6 after three periods before a 21-0 fourth quarter put Stanford away … Cal rushed for 307 yards and quarterback Aaron Rodgers was an efficient 14-of-17 for 167 yards … J.J. Arrington gained 169 yards on 27 carries while Marshawn Lynch added 122 on nine carries to lead the Bear's attack … The Car-dinal struggled offensively throughout the day and finished the 2004 campaign with its fifth straight loss.
Fourth Quarter Finishes on the RoadFour of Stanford's wins this season have come in close games on the road that have been decided in the fourth quarter … A year ago, Stanford had three, three point games - and lost them all … In 2005, the Cardinal has been able to make a defensive stand in each of those wins to preserve the victory … The Cardinal led Navy 41-38 when the Midshipmen took over with 1:47 to play and a chance to win the game … But, the Cardinal defense forced a sack and two incomplete passes before taking over on downs … Against WSU, the Cardinal again led by three points when the Cougars took over with 1:01 left in the game … An interception by Nick Sanchez gave the Cardinal the win … Against Arizona, the Wildcats trailed 20-14 with 3:53 and the ball at midfield, but a Brandon Harri-son interception ended UA's threat … At Oregon State, the Cardinal was nurs-ing a three point lead in the fourth quarter and withstood the Beaver's last drive, which went to the Cardinal 35-yard line … A 52-yard field goal attempt with 16 seconds remaining fell short, preserving Stanford's 20-17 victory.
Turnover Margin Key Component in Cardinal WinsStanford is 4-1 this season when it wins the turnover battle and 1-3 when it loses … In wins over Navy, Washington State, Arizona and Arizona State, Stanford was plus-9 while in loses to UC Davis, Oregon, and USC, the Cardinal is minus-7 in the turnover column … Stanford has committed four turnovers in its five wins and 12 in its four loses … Stanford had a string of four consecutive games without a turnover end at USC when it committed a season-high five against the Trojans … In the Cardinal's 20-16 win over Arizona on Oct. 15, Stanford forced five Wildcat turnovers while committing none … The Cardinal scored 13 of its 20 points vs. Arizona off turnovers.
Cardinal 4-1 on the Road; Only Loss at No. 1 USC The Cardinal is 4-1 on the road in 2005 with its only loss coming at No. 1 ranked USC … Stanford has beaten Navy, Washington State, Arizona and Or-egon State on the road in front of loud, hostile crowds … Before losing at USC, Stanford had won three straight road games - and two Pac-10 road games on successive weekends - for the first time since it won four straight in 1995 … In all four of its road wins, the Cardinal had to make defensive stands in the fourth quarter to preserve the win … Stanford's four road wins are the most on The
Great Big Games

Stanford Stadium, home to Cardinal football for the past 83 years, will undergo an extensive $85-90 million renovation project that will begin im-mediately after Stanford's final home game this season vs. Notre Dame on November 26. The plan for renovating Stanford Stadium received approval from the University Board of Trustees on June 7, 2005. The goal is to have the project completed prior to the 2006 football season.
The "New" Stanford StadiumPlans include bringing the seating capacity from 85,500 to approximately 50,000 and eliminating the track, which will improve sightlines throughout the Stadium and bring more seats closer to the field. Also included are a new, mod-ern, state-of-the-art press box, improved spectator amenities and public safety and enhanced conditions for Stanford's student-athletes.
Stanford Stadium HistoryInitially sparked by a fued with the University of California to see which school could complete a new football facility sooner, the construction of Stan-ford Stadium was accomplished in just over four months. The original design called for a 66-row, U-shaped structure Seating capacity in original stadium was 60,000.
