What is NetDay?

• A national, education technology nonprofit

• Mission: to connect every child to a brighter future through networking

• Began in 1996 as a school wiring initiative

• Driving force: John Gage of Sun Microsystems

• 50,000 volunteers wired 25% of the schools in California in one day!

Why Speak Up Day?• To give a voice to all stakeholders in the

educational community• To frame a new conversation around education

and technology• To mobilize thousands of students to share their

ideas about the effective use of technology for learning.

• The quality of education for all students is enhanced by these contributions.

Speak Up Day for Students

• October – November 2004

• 166,000 K-12 students submitted surveys

• 130 Hyndman Students responded– 53% of school population

• Sharing their ideas about using technology– for learning and for fun.

• Students spoke out to decision makers

How is the Data Used?

• NetDay will publish a national report of the findings

• The data will be shared with national, state, and local policymakers

• Used to inform the new National Education Technology Plan

• Schools have used student data from Speak Up Day to support bond issues, create student planning groups, and update technology plans

District Uses

• Districts plan to use the data to engage teachers, administrators, and the community in conversations about technology use and education.

• Many districts have scheduled their annual technology planning committee meetings around the release of the data.

• Many districts are using the data to inform budgetary decisions.
