KOREAN WAR VETERAN ED DOWNEY OF BALDWIN served in theU.S. Army 45th Infantry Division, the Thunderbirds, in Korea ' in1951 as a machine-gunner. He and his wife revisited Seoul asguests of the South Korean War Veterans, on the 50th Anniversaryof the Korean War. "When I left 50 years ago, Seoul was a rubble-now it is a beautiful city. The people welcomed us back with paradesand medals, thankful for what we did for them. It was very emotion-al," said Mr. Downey.

Korean portraitsKorean born Nassau artist Euikwon Kim

is doing everything he can to insure thatLong Island residents never let the Koreanconflict become "America's ForgottenWar." •

The artist wants to do for the military men 'and women of those battles what TomBrokaw did for World War II veteransin his book "The GreatestGeneration." Since Kim is >lone of Korea's best knownyoung artists, he hassaid, "Thank you" forhis country, with hisoil portraits.

"Fifty YearsLater: Portraits byGary EuikwonKim" is now onexhibit untilNovember 30 atNassau County'shistoric ChelseaC e n t e r ,M u t t o n t o w nPreserve. The 30portraits on loan forthe exhibition belongto Long Island resi-dents whose faces Kimwas too young to haveseen when they came todefend his family's freedom. They are all members of theKorean War Veterans Association,Nassau County Chapter #1 (KWVA-NCC#1), which in partnership with Nassau ,'County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi willmake the moving portraits and a wide arrayof Korean War memorabilia, uniforms, pho-,tographs and living history videos availableto the public for this special exhibition.

The President of the Korean WarVeterans Association, Nassau County

Chapter, Tom Riley is one of the subjects. The artist met Mr. Riley and his fellow vet-erans four years ago when Mr. Kim hadrecently come to live in the United States, after achieving fame in his native Korea asan illustrator and portraitist. They wereintroduced through members of the

Arundaun Presbyterian Church inBethpage.

According to CountyExecutive Suozzi, "The his-

toric Chelsea Estate atMuttontown Preserve

are the ideal place andtime to honor thecounty's men andwomen who them-selves made historymore than 50 yearsago when they wentto protect the free-

{ dom of Korea."Admission will be

It's official! The Freeport Red Devils'football Team is the new Nassau CountyConference I Champion. "This is whatwe worked for all summer and all sea-son," exclaimed Assiseant Coach KeithBrown., These sentiments were echoedby Head Coach Russ Cellan. "You

' played a great game and came out strongagainst a very good team. We have onebig game to go and we only get one shotat the title, Even though you may betired and only have a few hours to cele-brate, it's a short week and we will haveto have a light practice tomorrow."

It's this super work ethic that hasmade this motivated team so special.Freeport defeated Farmingdale 28-7 in agame that was closer than the score indi-cated. Freeport had many big plays by avariety of players. Each player fulfilledhis role to secure the victory.

Eric Reitmayr had a huge tackle in thefirst quarter that stopped the Dalers'offense cold, had a 27-yard kickoffreturn that set up a 5-play, 29-yardtouchdown run in the first quarter, had a21-yard kickoff return in the second andtwo plays later had an exciting 50-yardpass-run completion. He caught a touch-down pass just before the end of the firsthalf, started the third quarter with with a26-yard return, and made a big tacklethat allowed Leslie Jackman to score."Eric had a big game tonight," com-mented Cellan. "He also showed greatleadership throughout the game.".

Randy Mills ran in two touchdowns, from the 7-yard line in the first quarterand from the 1 -yard-line in the fourth. He threw a TD pass to Reitmayr in the

second quarter with only 1:12 left in thehalf. Mills was 5 of 10 for the day andaccumulated 66 yards. His completedTD pass was his 28th of the season.Farmingdale took away much ofFreeport's passing game and thus LeslieJackman and Lennox Norville got thenod.

Jackman and Norville were impres-sive as they accumulated 119 yards on12 carries and 38 yards respectively.Norville also sacked the quarterbackand both Jackman -and Norville stoppedthe Daler receiver just before the goalline in the fourth quarter to stop aFarmingdale TD.

Other big plays of the game includedJet Bates' interception in the end zonewith 33 seconds ori the clock to haltFarmingdale's last offensive effort in thefourth quarter. Mike McQueen put somuch pressure on Farmingdale's quar-terback that he threw an incomplete passon a fouth down with six to go in thefirst quarter. Co-captain StanleyGuttierez, Sean Scott, Kyle Greenwood,Olubemi Otulaja, Co-captain Adam

' Woodmansee, Omar Walden, McQueenand James Rudolph were Freeport's keytacklers. They have been strong all yearand have given up very few points allseason. Adrian Palazzo kicked twopoints and kept Farmingdale deep withlong yardage on his kickoffs.

Freeport never trailed during thegame and will meet William Floyd inthe Long Island Championship game onSaturday, September 20, at Stony BrookUniversity at 4:30 p.m. Come out tosupport the team. Fans can call the ath-letic office for directions to Stony Brookif necessarv.

"Inmost areas,of-tjie country, No,vernb.er is the month'when the lastwarm days of fall fade away, and people begin to prepare for the

, winter,^head. Eplks checjc the,furnace or lay in,more firewood-for•cojd. weather month's. ,

It is a common sense preparation for changing seasons. But,unfortunately, many Americans do not make as good an effort inpreparing for a major change in "the seasons of their life": the tran-sition from work to retirement.

According to the 2003 Retirement Confidence Survey, 61 per-cent of American workers have not tried to determine how muchmoney they will need to save for a comfortable retirement. And,

. because they do not have any specific financial goal, they will oftenunderestimate how much money they need.

The best way to avoid this mistake is to do a little kitchen tablefinancial planning and the best place to begin is with SocialSecurity. Most folks can get a pretty good idea of what they canexpect from Social Security just by reading the Social SecurityStatement that is mailed to then each year. It arrives two to threemonths before their birthday. It provides a personal estimate ofretirement, disability and survivors benefits that a worker and his orher family may be eligible to receive from Social Security.

Of course, Social Security was never meant to be the only sourceof retirement income. Unfortunately, the latest statistics show that20 percent of older Americans are living just on their SocialSecurity payments. And, for'about one-third of the elderly, theirSocial Security benefits represent 90 percent or more of theirincome.

Financial planners say that retirees need at least 70 to 80 percentof pre-retirement income to live comfortably. For average wageearners, Social Security will replace about 40 percent of their pre-retirement income...about half of what you will need. That meansthat workers need to supplement their Social Security check withpensions, personal savings and investments.

There are now many retirement savings and investment optionsavailable to workers. Options can include an IRA, a 401(k), Rothaccounts or other savings and investment vehicles. Take advantageof the opportunities they offer and you will find a source of finan-cial warmth when you enter the autumn of your years.

To help you understand just what you will need for your retire-ment, you can use Social Security's helpful benefit planners atwww.socialsecurity.lov/planners/index.htm and you can check outthe helpful information available from the American SavingsEducation Council's-website at www.asec.org.

DISCUSSING MEDIA...AI the mostrecent Baldwin Chamber of Commercemeeting, I was invited to participate in apanel discussion of local media.

In response to questions posed byPresident Doris Duffy and in answer toquestions from members, various aspectsof newspaper policies, ethics, and proce-dures were highlighted. I would like toshare some of the points that I tried to makewith you, our readers.

"What is the role of a community news-paper?" To us at The Leader, the papershould accurately reflect the community. All of us are aware that a paper should con-tain news, editorials, features, and advertis-ing by local merchants. But the manner inwhich news and features are reportedmakes a big difference in the perception ofa community.

Certainly a local paper is not expected tobe only the community's cheerleader, although there are many aspects of that rolein its coverage. Only in a local paper doesone get coverage of those happy importantpersonal events like weddings, gradua-tions, and awards that are not part of thetypical coverage of daily papers.

But community papers cannot onlycover the good news. Local papers mustreport on the whole community and unfor-tunately that sometimes includes situations

that are not always positive. Particularlywith those kinds of events, however, Iemphasized, the coverage must be propor-tionate.

Every week each local paper receives apolice blotter. It is important to know ifthere are robberies, car thefts, and drugdealing in a community, and for the indi-vidual personally impacted, that is the mostimportant piece of news of the week. But ifthe crime is in proportion to the type andquantity of crime that typically takes placein any community, then front page cover-age is disproportionate and creates anincorrect perception of the community. That is why at The Leader, much of ourcrime reporting is in a "police blotter" sec-tion.

Those kinds of decisions, which are sub-jective, affect the reporting of news whichis objective in content. Over time, it makesa big difference to a community's percep-tion of itself if a local paper's coveragetends to be consistently tabloid in natureand "gotcha" in attitude.

The same holds true for the reporting oflocal community meetings. While agendasmay appear objective, the way in which anaudience responds to items in that agendais also part of the news.

For example at a recent Board ofEducation meeting in Baldwin, an agenda

item about a possible $29 million bondissue was objectively the most importantpiece of news. Yet, the lengthy negativereaction and comments by parents overrecent changes in the elementary levelreport card - comments that lasted wellover one hour - changed the entire focus ofthe evening and could not be ignored. What was objectively most important tooka back seat to what was emotionally mostimportant at that meeting.

The concept of advertising was also dis-cussed. I remember fondly being recruitedby Rhoda and Ira Keller many years ago towrite for The Leader, then a paper thatcovered Freeport news exclusively. Theyrecognized that coverage of some Baldwinevents, particularly school news, wasimportant since a large number of theirreaders, although living in Freeport, werein the Baldwin School District.

Ira coined a phrase, "A community ispeople with common interests."

Although that idea holds true for manyaspects of the news, it especially holds truefor advertising. There are some businesseswhose clients are exclusively local. Howfar, for example, does one go for a take-outpizza or to pick up dry cleaning?

But other businesses draw from a widerarea - restaurants, professional services, skilled home improvements, for example. I

suggested that the business people beforeme consider wjio they believe their clientsare and then reflect on whether their adver-tising reaches those potential customers. The Leader's affiliation with the other threepapers of L&M Publications (MerrickLife, Bellmore Life and the Wantagh-Seaford Citizen) gives business people theopportunity to reach a wider customerbase.

As usual, my attendance at the Chambermeeting was a joy. I am always impressedby the dedication of local business people, not only to their own businesses, but to thecommunity as a whole. Although manylive locally, not all do, and yet they extendthemselves in ways which bring them nodirect return on their investment of time.Their efforts do, however, go a long way toenhancing pride and improving our area'squality of life.

We urge you during this holiday seasonto make a commitment to purchase asmany of your holiday gifts as possiblefrom merchants who are dedicated mem-bers of local chambers of commerce. Theyare the people that you solicit whenevergifts or prizes are needed for your organi-zation's events. They are the people whoare paying local taxes, and they are thepeople who, along with residents, want ourlocal communities to succeed.

Baldwin chamber updates organization activitiesby Joan Delaney

At the November 18, Baldwin Chamberof Commerce meeting held at the OldVenice Restaurant on Merrick Road,President Doris Duffy and Chamber offi-cers updated members on the organiza-tion's activities.

Director Howard Gainsburg described ar recent follow-up meeting that Ms. Duffy, former President Ginny Foley, he andanother landlord had with CountyExecutive Thomas Suozzi and members ofhis staff regarding the revitalization ofproperties on west Grand Avenue just northof Merrick Road.

During a recent tour of Baldwin, theCounty Executive had pledged to workwith the Chamber and local landlords torevitalize the properties. Mr. Gainsburgsaid that they discussed ways to upgradethe storefronts, enhance the rear parkingarea, and improve lighting and signage. Hesaid that "a master plan is needed" now thatit is clear that the properties will not becondemned since the First Precinct will notbe relocated to the site.

Noting that only two of the 12-14 arealandlords attended the meeting, Mr.Gainsburg attributed the poor turnout to thefact that the meeting date was changed sev-

eral times. He said that he was not notifiedof the last change of date and went to theCounty Executive's office to find that themeeting had again been postponed.

But despite some problems, Mr.Gainsburg was optimistic that the CountyExecutive was committed to helping busi-ness owners improve the area. Ms. Duffynoted that one landlord would be checkingwith the Baldwin Historical Society forpictures of the buildings so that refurbish-ments could be in keeping with the archi-tectural history of the area. The county willput the Chamber in touch with an historicalarchitect.

In later comments Chamber officer Samlandiorio noted that a beauty supply busi-ness would be going into the De Montbuilding at 2426 and 2428 Grand Avenueand the owner wanted to enhance the prop-erty. Ms. Duffy said that the Chamberwould like to see "the charm of an oldercommunity" reflected in refurbishments.

Both Mr. Gainsburg and Ms. Duffydescribed the County Executive's commit-ment to help find funding sources to co-share costs, particularly regarding attrac-tive wooden signs.

In other business, Ms. Duffy announcedtwo December holiday events which the

Chamber is co-sponsoring with theBaldwin Community Association (BCA).On Saturday, December 6, between 4 and6 p.m. the community Christmas tree willbe lighted at the railroad station. There willbe free refreshments, entertainment byPat's Dance Studio, the Nassau DanceCenter and the New World Music Centerculminated by a visit from Santa Clauswho will arrive on a firetruck. DeborahManiaci, a director of both the Chamberand BCA, is coordinating the event.

On December 19, at 3:30 p.m. the com-munity menorah will be lighted at the sta-tion in ceremonies led by Rabbi RobertJudd.

Ms. Duffy also noted that representa-tives of two potential new businesses cameto check out sites in Baldwin as a result of

the Chamber's affiliation withFranchisehelp but the property specifica-tions did not meet their needs.

At the beginning of the meeting, therewas a moment of silence to rememberagain the late Ann Dictor whose workwith the Salvation Army kettle drive wasparticularly active during these holidaytimes, and Jack Combs who died lastmonth and who was the Chamber's Santaas well as Easter Bunny and GreatPumpkin.

The Chamber also plans to help theMarine Corps "Toys for Tots" pro-gram, possibly asking residents tobring new unwrapped toys to the holi-day event.

A panel discussion of local media alsotook place. (See Just Write.)

Baldwin zoning hearing adjournedby Joan Delaney

At a Town of Hempstead Town Boardmeeting on November 18, attorneyDoris Rios Duffy requested and wasgranted an adjournment of a hearing onthe zoning application of DEKAAssociates to rezone a parcel of proper-ty on south Grand Avenue in Baldwinnear Barnes Avenue from Residence"B" District to "Golden Age" (GA)District. The adjournment was allowedand the case will be heard on January27.

Ms. Duffy, recently retained by localresidents, noted that they needed time tocomplete their investigations into issues

connected with the rezoning. AttorneyWilliam Bonesso, representing thedeveloper John Martino, president ofDEKA Associates, officially objected tothe adjournment, but when it was grant-ed offered to meet "on additional occa-sions" with residents. DEKA hasalready held two meetings with resi-dents.

Residents are concerned about severalissues and at the informational meetingshave particularly cited problems withdrainage and sewers in the area.

The proposal for the 1.32 acres callsfor 27 gabled town house units with 26parking spaces. There is one Victorianhome, built in 1905, on the site.

He went toGuatemala, Central America, where helived and worked for the next 6 yearsassisting the poor^and the needy as hewas asked. He remained with this reli-gious community until 1976 when hereturned to New York.

In 1977 he married Blanca Bonilla, native of El Salvador, and he beganworking with community organizationshere in the Long Island area, first withEOC in Glen Cove, and later with theSpanish Brotherhood Center .in LongBeach, before coming to Our HolyRedeemer Parish. There he was ordainedto the Diaconate in April of 1989. wherehe volunteered to assist many of theparish priests in their ministry serving theneeds of the Freeport Community.

More recently Deacon Cales hasbeen made the Director of Our HolyRedeemer Parish Outreach.

While previously his various tasksmore pointedly were to assist theSpanish community, as Director ofParish Outreach he is now managing

the activities of the entire communityassistance programs. Since January2001, when he was named theDirector, Deacon Cales has been abeacon of strengthto the downtrod-den and despair-ing in our commu-nity. Whether it isa veteran in needof counseling, orlodging, or ahomeless personin need of a meal,Deacon Cales andParish Outreach isthere to help. TheParish Outreachhelped to organ-ize, open andoperate a soupkitchen onSaturday morn-ings in the base-ment of the Old Holy Redeemer

Francisco Cales

School, as well as provide counselingto families who are in need of socialservice assistance. Sometimes it's justa few pieces of clothing that is needed

and sometimes it's agreat deal more. It israre when- DeaconCales says no. If hedoesn't have themeans wi thin hisdisposal, he hasbeen known to goout into Freeportand surroundingcommunities to seekthe assistance ofthose who couldhelp. He puts in anenormous amount ofextra time becauseas he says there justisn't enough hoursin a day to get it alldone. It is unknown

how many times this man and his love

for his fellow man was directlyresponsible for saving a distraughtperson from going over the edge andchoosing a path of self destruction.Today on a daily basis ParishOutreach serves 15-20 families a dayseeking to provide whatever assis-tance they can to help them overcomewhat appears to be an impossible task.

The use of a large reception roomhas been donated to the Rotary Clubby the Restaurant, and all net dinnerproceeds will be donated by FreeportRotary to Parish Outreach. The cost ofadmission to this gala affair to helpthe needy of our Freeport Communitywil l .be only $37.50 per person. New hockey team at the Recby Harry Loud

Will the Long Island Blues, theIsland's latest hockey team give theIslanders a run for the cup? Maybe not,but what they lack in skating ability theymake up with love and enthusiasm.

The Blues are the brainstorm ofCoach Neil Robbins of theWantagh/Seaford Baymen. Heapproached other coaches in referenceto the eight teams throughout the coun-try that have programs for children andyoung adults with developmental dis-abilities. Why not a ninth team here onLong Island, he asked, and so the gearsbegan to turn.

Fourteen children with developmentaldisabilities showed up at the FreeportRecreational Center last Friday for afree ice skating clinic. Along with thechildren were young members of the

Wantagh/Seaford Baymen, FreeportArrows Travel Team, Long Island Gulls,Applecore Team and the PAL whoassisted in teaching the youngsters thebasics of ice-skating.

If needed, equipment was providedand needless to say the kids had a ball.Although no hockey sticks were used, one young lady came back to the benchwith a bloodied lip, the mark of a truehockey player. She cried a little, wastended to by mom, had a drink of waterand was ready for more ice time

Coach Robbins would like to seeabout 30 children signed up for the pro-gram and is seeking any help and/orcooperation that he can get.

Michael Drapala is Exchange Club Student of the Monthby Blanca Tapia,

Guidance Counselor

We live in a society comprised of vari-ous types of individuals, each possessingunique qualities. While some may be satis-fied with achieving only the bare mini-mum, others have a burning desire to con-tinually grow and develop until theybecome multi- dimensional in all areas oflife and radiate traits that are continuouslyrecognized and admired by others.

It is up lo each of us to hone our givenqualities in order to distinguish ourselvesand stand apart from the rest of the crowd. The same can be said about such a multi-faceted individual whose persona consistsof many characteristics, not all of whichmay be displayed simultaneously. It is bothgratifying and refreshing to know that thereare students at Freeport High School whoembrace the importance of being a well-rounded person and who strive to excel inall areas of educational curricula, MichaelDrapala,. who we honor today, is -oneofthose rare youngsters whose extraordi-nary academic talent, coupled with somany outside endeavors, establishes himas ah extremely rare individual. Hisaccomplishments in academic, athletics, music, and community involvement are .second to none.

It is with great enthusiasm that I shareMichael's praises with you. One of hisproudest accomplishments is in the area ofsports, where he prides himself in havingbeen a part of- the Long IslandChampionship in baseball during thefourth grade. But Michael's agenda ofinterests, and achievements far exceed thatshining moment. Aside from studying andhis athletic activities, Michael's artistic tal-ents flourish when he becomes a part ofthe music he plays. During his four yearsat Freeport High School, Michael'saccomplishments have extended farBeyond the classroom. While in the ninthgrade, Michael was accepted into LongIsland Strings and All County, where hehas been revered for his musical work. Hisgenuine passion for music is glaringly evi-dent throughout the school day as he is asection leader of the Jazz Band, MarchingBand, Sinfonietta and Orchestra. His com-mitment and love for the arts comes to

Police News

light through his school musical perform-ances as well. His natural ability to playthe string bass, bass guitar, the guitar andthe piano along with his overall generalcommitment to music has served as astepping stone for Michael as it furthertransformed him into an accomplished stu-dent. If you are asking yourself, "Wheredoes this talented young musician and ath-lete find the time to do homework andstudy?", beassured thatMichael' sanswer wouldbe, "There'salways time foracademics!"

Hisi n t e l l e c t u a lcuriosity andeagerness . tolearn are only afew factors thatcontribute tohis consistently'superior levelof academicperformance. Those who know him would agree that heis an exemplary young man whose dedica-tion, commitment, and academic prowesshave ultimately led to his numerousachievements. As a matter of fact, Michaelprides himself in his commitment to takefull responsibility for his education. Hisparents dotingly describe him as a compas-sionate young man, who has been rew.ard-ed for all his hard work and dedication.Michael does not believe he is owed any-thing, in fact, he feels he must work to earnit. He has worked voraciously in and out ofschool to maintain the high academic stan-dards he has set for himself.

Undoubtedly, Michael was very seriousabout his academic pursuits long beforehe illuminated the halls of Freeport HighSchool. His ambitious work ethic coupledwith intellectual ability earned him highschool credits as early as his seventh

glowing storydoesn't end onthat note. Stillfurther, Michaelhas recentlyreached his pin-

Awell deserved honor, given that he hasachieved a grade point average whichexceeds 98 and a weighted average wellbeyond 100. I am delighted to announcethat that average has earned him the classranking of'Number One" out of 360 stu-dents and, ultimately, the prestigious roleof "Valedictorian" of the Class of 2004.

But...Michael has yet more to add to hisresume. In his junior year, he was inductedinto both the National Honor Society andthe National Science Honor Society. Hehas been the recipient of the Silver Medalfor his performance on the Mathletes Teamand attained a "perfect score" during hismost recent competition. Be assured thatduring his tenure as a student at FreeportHigh School, he has earned a wide varietyof other noteworthy awards and accolades.

As an Honor Society commitment,Michael has been very active in our school.as a peer tutor. He enjoys being an activemember of Key Club, Peer Leaders, and heserved as President of Science OlympiadsAlso, Michael is credited for having found-ed the Physics and Chemistry Club at thehigh school. Athletically, Michael com-petes on our varsity Bowling team and par-takes of school sports'such as Baseball. Inhis limited free time, he dedicates himselfto the Christ Lutheran Church by servingas a member of the youth group, tutoringprogram, and fundraising committee.Michael still finds time in his alreadydemanding schedule to work as a caterer aswell as an employee of Jet Line Products.

At this time I would like to say a fewwords directly to the young man we honor.Michael, I believe that, 'given your back-ground, it is safe to presume that you haveadopted the pursuit of knowledge and edu-cation as your own personal mantra. The

'idea that learning is not only a lifelongchallenge for you, but also a lifelongprocess arid, commitment is evident in allthat you do. You have expressed a sincereinterest in furthering your education inEngineering at some of the most presti-gious universities in the country. Presently,I know you are considering applications toinstitutions such as Columbia Universityand Massachusetts Institute of Technology.I have every confidence that whicheveruniversity you decide to attend, you will bean asset and will make a valuable contribu-tion to that institution.

Michael, you have had the unyieldingsupport of your loving parents, the enlight-enment and inspiration of your teachers, counselors, administrators and peers, butmost importantly, you have maintained thefaith and belief in yourself that has charac-terized you as a unique individual worthyof admiration and eminence. Michael, wesalute you as our "Student of the Month,"and wish you only the best in all of yourfuture endeavors. At the end of the schoolyear, Freeport High School will render adelightful, dynamic individual to the worldof higher education. It was a rainy afternoon on Long Islandwhen 1 met with Chef Pierre at BistroCitron in Roslyn. Speaking with him waslike walking through the markets ofToulouse.

Chef Pierre pursued his dream, attend-ing the fine culinary institutes ofToulouse and then Paris. He spent sevenyears preparing his cuisine on the FrenchRiviera in some of the world's best hotelsand restaurants. Only ten years ago he

made the move to New York where henow resides in Manhattan with hiswife Veronica and two children, age 5 years and 16 months. His experience in New Yorkincludes various restau-rants and hotels such asThe Barbizon and mostrecently Cassis inHuntington. He nowcommutes daily fromManhattan (with a stopalong the way to checklocal produce) to the newBistro Citron in Roslyn.

Chef Pierre has quickly madea name for Bistro Citron, withthe assistance of Sous ChefDaniel Campagna, by creating

Chef Pierre will please any appetite. Infact, he shared a funny story of when heworked for a family in Manhattan whojust happened to be wild about truffles.Chef Pierre recalls when he was asked toprepare an entire dinner, from appetizerto dessert, of truffles. Restaurant Review by Carolee Fox

The Grand Opening of Shanghai Moon has created quite a stiron Long Island. Located in the Merrick Mall, this beautiful refur-bished restaurant offers Manhattan-chic, authentic Shanghaineseand Japanese dishes.

The region of Shanghai is receiving acclaim for its cuisine, andhas an avant-garde reputation in many major cities in the world.Shanghai is the largest and most cosmopolitan city in China andrepresents the cooking of the Eastern seaboard, which for manyyears has been influenced by recipes and ingredients of theWestern World. Thus, the dishes are a special hybrid that hasevolved over the years, featuring local seafood, fresh ingredients, and elegant presentation. Cooking methods include stewing, bak-ing, stir-frying, and steaming, smoking, and grilling, resulting ina variety of flavors, both local and foreign.

Restaurateurs David and Lisa are originally from Shanghai, where they were professionally trained. They have competed inthe Manhattan arena and their restaurants have received presti-gious acclaim from the media. They now bring their talentedstaff and skills to Long Island, saving us the commute to "TheCity." .

The .menu is vast; offering a myriad of Chinese and Japaneseselections, but the staff is very helpful and will graciously cometo your assistance. If you are not adventurous, and are contentwith the standard Chinese dishes you have come to know andlove, they too are present in abundance, and well represented ontheir standard menu. Shanghai-trained, Chef Chen will alsoaccommodate your special requests or dietary needs..

A nice variety of dainty dim sum dumplings are represented onthe menu, but be sure to sample the soup dumplings, (also knownas Juicy Buns), one of the restaurant's signature dishes. The rela-tively Bite-size morsel is almost transparent, and is filled insidewith a delicious minced mixture of crab and/or pork. And withinthe dumpling is a tasty surprise: a burst of hot soup. The experi-ence to the palate is delightful. These dumplings are the rage inChinatown, but are not always readily available there.

Other appetizers include a variety of interesting cold dishes.Vegetarian cooking is a highly developed Shanghai specialty.Using a variety of vegetable products, the chef creates exquisite-ly shaped masterpieces, resembling both meat and fish, vegetarian chicken and smoked vegetarian duck were beautifullypresented and very tasty. The cold marinated five-spice beef wasthinly sliced, very tender, and presented on a bed or vegetables.

Jumbo Shrimp and Chili Sauce arrived as a generous serving. The shrimp.were very large, delicately cooked and the sauce, while snappy, had a lovely sweet taste to compliment the spice. This is not a typical wok dish, but one typical of some Shanghaistyle dishes, where the flavors are simmered for hours to form acomplex flavor structure.

Peking Duck, an international favorite, was beautifully execut-ed. The tender meat, scallions and crispy skin was rolled into asteamed pancake and served with a delicious rich plum sauce.Fresh Water Eel Steamed with a delicate and delicious black beansauce is another dish that is cooked for hours and is still simmer-ing when it arrives table-side.

The expertise of sushi Chef Tony is immediately apparent.Trained in his art for many years, his creations are both authenticand innovative. His hot and cold rolls were all superb, but he'llmake you something special if you just ask. The fish is very freshand the Sushi Bar is immaculate. The restaurant also offers avariety of hot Japanese entrees including tempuras, teriyaki dish-es and House Specialties.

The restaurant is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.Catering, take-out ana free delivery are available.Save that trip to Manhattan; because what's " in" is right here inMerrick.

Re: Lloyd Letter

To the Leader:Re: Bruce Lloyd's letter,

Information Please (Nov. 13, 2003).Mr. Lloyd brings up excellent points. However he fails to bring up theawful truth that The Leader has beenvery lax (to put it mildly) in reportingproblems in the Village of Freeport. To further compound matters, TheLeader's editor, Paul Laursen, censors

• letters sent to the Leader to the pointthat it doesn't even pay to take thetime to submit them.

In the last school board election, candidate Stewart Lilker's commentswere not allowed by Mr. Laursen. Mr.Lilker was so harassed to change hisviews that he finally withdrew fromthe interview rather than have hisplatform altered by Mr. Laursen. However, The Leader did print hisopponent's views, uncensored.

I, myself have had letters-and evenPAID ADVERTISEMENTS censored. The leader has not had unbiasedreporting since Mr. Laursen wasappointed editor. It is no wonder thatthe Freeport taxpayers had no idea ofwhat was going on with the board.Ask Mr. Kuncham to submit a report?Really, Mr. Lloyd, do you expect it tobe anything but "hogwash"? And, doyou really expect The Leader to printany uncensored opposing views?

You will probably never see thisletter in The Leader unless it isseverely censored.

John J. HelfrichEditor's note: The Leader reviews

articles and editorial submissionswith the New York Press AssociationLibel Hot Line and relies on theiradvice, which enables us to put inmany items which we might other-wise reject, thus widening the oppor-tunities for free expression in thecommunity. Unfortunately, on occa-sion we must refuse to print part of asubmission. The writer is then free toaccept the editing or withdraw thesubmission.
