Sophia M. Sachs ButterflyHouse
Christner designed this newbutterfly house and educationcenter for a sunny meadow inSt. Louis County’s Faust Park. The light-filled steel structureis clad with clear, laminatedinsulating glass. The curvedroof minimizes the chance ofbutterflies getting caught incorners; clear netting keepsthe butterflies away from theglass. Tropical floweringplants provide essentialelements of suitable habitatsfor the butterflies, which areon display year-round. Thebuilding systems create thewarm, high-humidity environ-ment required by the butter-flies. Two different powersources, plus an emergencygenerator, ensure continuousclimate control. The MissouriBotanical Garden now ownsand operates the ButterflyHouse, a 1998 design awardwinner from the AIA St. Louis.
