In the middle and long distance events, the Raiders continued to make big improvements. Senior Bernardo Vasqucz dropped his mile time down to 5:05.31. Page 8, Thursday, April 4, 2002 The Rice Raider boy's varsity track team, behind several season and career bests, competed at the state- acclaimed Bulldog Relays Thursday night in Sweeny. The Raiders scored a season high 95.points to finish third overall in a strong field of 12 teams. Competing at the relays were Sweeny (team champs), Brazos, Sealy, Needville, Hallettsville, Brookshirc-Royal, Hitchcock, East Bernard, Weimar, Tidehaven and Water Valley. Coach Ryan Roark commented, "This was a good meet for us. Our confidence level is high. We had 14 different boys set all-time personal marks Thursday night. The hard work at practice is finally starting to payoff. Plus, it was the first time all season where we've had our whole track team at: one time (injuries, baseball), with the exception of Andrew Varlcy, who missed the meet because of a foot injury. If you would'vc told mc wc could score 95 points in the Sweeny meet six weeks ago, I would'vc fainted. We've come a long way, but wc still have lots of room for improve- ment." In the relays competitions, the Raiders ran fairly well. The 440 shuttle hurdle relay team, consisting of Michael Spears, Michael Cooper, Stuart Ray and Anthony Palmer won the gold medal with a time of 68.54. The 3200 relay team, made up of Bernardo Vasquez, Jcramie Hemphill (2:10.24), Jimmy Navarro and Des- mond Parker, placed fourth overall with a time of 9:16.28. The 800 relay team (James John- son, Eddie Glover, Charles Huffman and Jermaine Williams) placed third overall with an excellent time of 1:33.45. The 1600 relay team placed fifth overall with a 3:40.59. Team members include Ben Ortiz, Jason Godley, Cooper and Glover. This is the first time this team has run together this season. Their times should begin to drop as the group rounds into shape. Maybe the most sizzling race of the day came when the 400 relay team ran in the afternoon preliminaries. Team members Huffman, J. Wil- Fcb. 26, Garwood School students attended the UIL competition held in Stafford. Sixteen students competed and returned home with six medals. Participating were second graders Allyssa Krpec and Destinea Williams in Storytelling. Brooke Popp and Natalie Klimple represented the third grade in Story- telling. In fourth grade Oral Reading (OR), Chad Bittner, Kaydi Gold and Dillan Sanford attended. Hillary Johnson, Kacie Smith and Shelly Myres participated in OR for the sixth grade. Johnson placed third while Smith placed sixth. Seventh graders Ashley Brown, Noelle Jurica and Farah Ellenbogen also participated in OR. Jurica placed fifth. Eighth graders Hunter Smith, Sasha Sharp and Lay ton Gold all placed in the OR competition. Smith placed fourth; Gold, fifth; while Sharp placed sixth. March 5, the Garwood students at- tended the UIL competition in Sealy. At this competition, the students also learned the results of their writing entries. In second grade Creative Writing Kelsey Danklefs placed sixth. In eighth grade Ready Writing, Smith placed sixth. Jacob Engstrom placed fourth in seventh grade Editorial Writing (EW).     The Rice Raider boy's varsity track team, behind several season and career bests, competed at the state- acclaimed Bulldog Relays Thursday night in Sweeny.

    The Raiders scored a season high 95.points to finish third overall in a strong field of 12 teams.

    Competing at the relays were Sweeny (team champs), Brazos, Sealy, Needville, Hallettsville, Brookshirc-Royal, Hitchcock, East Bernard, Weimar, Tidehaven and Water Valley.

    Coach Ryan Roark commented, "This was a good meet for us. Our confidence level is high. We had 14 different boys set all-time personal marks Thursday night. The hard work at practice is finally starting to payoff. Plus, it was the first time all season where we've had our whole track team at: one time (injuries, baseball), with the exception of Andrew Varlcy, who missed the meet because of a foot injury. If you would'vc told mc wc could score 95 points in the Sweeny meet six weeks ago, I would'vc fainted. We've come a long way, but wc still have lots of room for improve- ment."

    In the relays competitions, the Raiders ran fairly well. The 440 shuttle hurdle relay team, consisting of Michael Spears, Michael Cooper, Stuart Ray and Anthony Palmer won the gold medal with a time of 68.54.

    The 3200 relay team, made up of Bernardo Vasquez, Jcramie Hemphill (2:10.24), Jimmy Navarro and Des- mond Parker, placed fourth overall with a time of 9:16.28.

    The 800 relay team (James John- son, Eddie Glover, Charles Huffman and Jermaine Williams) placed third overall with an excellent time of 1:33.45.

    The 1600 relay team placed fifth overall with a 3:40.59. Team members include Ben Ortiz, Jason Godley, Cooper and Glover. This is the first time this team has run together this season. Their times should begin to drop as the group rounds into shape.

    Maybe the most sizzling race of the day came when the 400 relay team ran in the afternoon preliminaries. Team members Huffman, J. Wil-

    Sixteen students competed and returned home with six medals.

    Participating were second graders Allyssa Krpec and Destinea Williams in Storytelling.

    Brooke Popp and Natalie Klimple represented the third grade in Story- telling.

    In fourth grade Oral Reading (OR), Chad Bittner, Kaydi Gold and Dillan Sanford attended.

    Hillary Johnson, Kacie Smith and Shelly Myres participated in OR for the sixth grade. Johnson placed third while Smith placed sixth.

    Seventh graders Ashley Brown, Noelle Jurica and Farah Ellenbogen also participated in OR. Jurica placed fifth. Eighth graders Hunter Smith, Sasha Sharp and Lay ton Gold all placed in the OR competition. Smith placed fourth; Gold, fifth; while Sharp placed sixth.

    March 5, the Garwood students at- tended the UIL competition in Sealy.

    At this competition, the students also learned the results of their writing entries.

    In second grade Creative Writing Kelsey Danklefs placed sixth.

    In eighth grade Ready Writing, Smith placed sixth.

    Jacob Engstrom placed fourth in seventh grade Editorial Writing (EW). For eight grade EW, Sharp placed first and Bridget Kaiser placed fifth.
