20 hours Research = $10,000 Savings on Health Insurance

"If I'm honest with myself, I spend more time planning a weekend getaway than I've spent managing my healthcare expenses."

My 2016 Out of Pocket estimate was: $15,000 (Premium) + $13,700 (Deductible) = $28,700 Total Out

Average cost of healthcare coverage for a family of 4 in the U.S.

Faced with spending more time and $$ figuring out Obamacare, I knew I had to find another way. One look at this chart, and you can see why I chose another

path. THIS mess is Obamacare:

U.S. House Democrats’ Health Plan

How I got started down this road to affordable healthcare

● Twenty hours is a huge chunk of anybody's week, but I had to either take the time and attempt to reduce my health insurance or take out a second mortgage on my house.

● The pain of a $1,256 a month insurance bill was just more than I could bear. Add on college expenses for 2 kids, house payments, car payments, insurance for my car, house, and business, plus living expenses. Needless to say, I was drowning.

So I knew I needed to take a much closer look at what we were spending on healthcare & why...

Page 5: 20 hours research = $10,000 savings on health insurance

So we started working through the process...

We set priorities, based on the following:

1. What did we spend over the last 12 months on health care 2. What did we spend on insurance premiums? 3. What did we spend on medical and dental expenses? 4. What is our projected spending over the next 12 months?

Now it was time for us to check in with our doctors to see what they had to say...

Once we agreed, we contacted our doctors with a number of questions:

Our questions included:

1. Who is the go-to person for insurance and billing questions? Do they respond to email? Are they helpful and knowledgeable?

2. What Insurance / Network do they like or prefer. Any horror stories from their patients?

3. Do they have a self -pay / cash pay program?4. Do you have any wellness or preventative appointments that will occur this

year?

But the details are what will save you money over time…

Questions for our doctors, con’t:

And this last one is really important, because it will help you track your costs, and ensure you are being billed correctly and properly:

5. Will they send you a “pre-bill” of the proposed visit with procedures, service codes, and CPT¹ codes?

¹The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code set is a medical code set maintained by the American Medical Association through the CPT Editorial Panel.

I also recommend checking out group share plans as an option

I discovered group sharing plans--health care sharing ministries (HCSMs) during the course of my research, and opted to sign up with Medi-Share, which is part of the Christian Care Ministry.

The sharing plan and benefits they provide my family have been working out well for us so far.

I set out to find out if I had any other options for my family's healthcare expenses.

I cut my insurance bill by over 70%.

There are other Health Care Sharing Ministries

Other Health Care Sharing Ministries (HCSMs) include:

1. Samaritan Ministries2. Christian Healthcare Ministries3. Liberty HealthShare

The overarching concept is similar, they all share in their own unique ways, and their plans differ, but they are recognized by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and can save you some money.

HCSM’s were grandfathered into Obamacare

What if I'd invested 20 hours 5 years ago

I might have an additional $50,000 in the bank. Which begs the question, what would that $50K be worth 20 years from now if I had invested it and gotten a 7% return - $200K? 300K?
