We would like to express our deep appreciation for your financial sup-port, which has allowed us to help so many Alaskan families. Through your generosity, the American Red Cross of Alaska has been able to attend to the emergent needs of communities throughout our state. As an organiza-tion, we continue to provide material support during a disaster, and will con-tinue to strive to enhance community preparedness before disaster strikes.

In the past year, our small staff was blessed with the hard work of close to 600 Alaska volunteers from every corner of the state, responding to a multitude of incidents, ranging from fire to flood. The massive fires striking Willow and Kenai captured the attention of many, but we were also able to support those affected by numerous single and multi-family structure fires. Fire was not the only culprit, flooding in many communities forced people out of their homes. We had the privilege to provide hope, a helping hand, a hot meal and a place to sleep for many.

With your help, the American Red Cross of Alaska was able to contin-ue its rural volunteer outreach initiative. We are pleased to share that there are now more trained Red Cross volunteers in both urban and rural Alas-ka than ever; people ready and willing to respond immediately to disasters in their local communities. In so many instances this means a disaster-as-sistance hug in person instead of contact over the phone. Other times it can mean help being offered by an American Red Cross of Alaska trained vol-unteer in a neighboring village hub, where local ties and trust already exist. Today, we are asked to respond more frequently, in more areas, an indica-tion that our outreach efforts are working. We are entering into collaborative partnerships with local government to better serve our diverse communities.

Numerous wildfires throughout Alaska resulted in damaged homes and evacuations for residents in Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Borough, Kenai Penninsula Borough, Denali Borough, SE Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Yukon-Koyukuk and Bethel. The American Red Cross of Alaska provided support by setting up shelters and by providing recovery services to affected clients in those regions, working together with partners such as Salvation Army, My House, United Methodist Church in Willow, and Alaska VOAD.

In 2015 the American Red Cross of Alaska focused on the Home Fire Campaign and The Pillowcase Project as two very useful tools to help educate the Alaskan community about disaster preparedness. Through the Home Fire Campaign we were able to reach dozens of households to install new smoke alarms along with re-placing batteries in already existing smoke alarms. Plans are ongoing this year to take this initiative statewide.

HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN

The Pillowcase Project is a preparedness education program for children in grades 3-5, which teaches them about personal and family preparedness, local hazards and basic coping skills. Upon completion of the program, students receive a sturdy pillowcase in which they are encouraged to build their own personal emergency supplies kit.

In Alaska, we attended dozens of community event throughout the year and have reached over 2,000 community members. Students were taught disaster preparedness in the event of a wildfire, home fire, earthquake, or winter storm.

As a team, the American Red Cross of Alaska strives to continue to reach out to our community in hopes to reduce disasters and promote education and preparedness for when they do.

• Education (Outreach & Briefings): Outreach is the means by which information is delivered to help military families and the community better understand, prepare for, and respond to the daily challenges of military life. Outreach can include brochures, advertisements or more formal briefings, among other things. Briefings educate service members, veterans, family members, military commands, and community partners about American Red Cross programs and services and how to access them in communities across the country and around the world.

• Information and Referral: American Red Cross offices help service members, veterans, Department of Defense personnel (overseas), and their families with identifying their needs, providing general or specific information about resources and offering referrals to an organization that may assist them. Information and referral also involves building and maintaining relationships with partner organizations in the community in order to meet needs that are not within the mission and programs of the American Red Cross.

• Engage Volunteers: Volunteer Services includes recruiting, placing, supervising, training, and recognizing adult and youth volunteers to deliver American Red Cross programs and services.

• Emergency Services: The American Red Cross of Alaska responds to military families experiencing an immediate need by providing the following services: Emergency Communications, Family Follow-up, Financial Assistance, Suicide Prevention Actions, and Disaster Services.

• Service to Military & Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Facilities: The American Red Cross serves the military community in medical facilities around the world. Medical facilities include military and VA hospitals, VA outpatient clinics, military community health care clinics, Vet Centers, VA Community Living Centers, and Veteran State Homes.

• Building Family Resiliency: The American Red Cross offers programs that seek to build resiliency through its worldwide offices. The American Red Cross of Alaska has programs, training opportunities and services available for active military members, veterans and their families. These opportunities provide a continuum of care through out a service members’ career and after their military service ends.

We have programs such as Dental Assistant Training program that trains spouses and dependents valuable job skills for free that they can take with them from one duty station to the next. At Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) we have an animal visitation program that is led and worked through volunteers. They take the trained animals into the hospital and provide sunshine wherever it is needed.

We provide also family follow-up to the service members who use our SAF emergency message line. Since the beginning of fiscal year 15 we have serviced hundreds of messages with family follow-up, resources, information and referral, and sent our condolences on their losses and hard times.

The American Red Cross of Alaska’s Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) program supports service members and their families both during times of deployment as well as during times at home. We also support retiree, veterans, guard, and reserve components as well. We have six core functions as SAF. These are national set standards for our SAF program. The following are the main functions we perform at all times.

INTERNATIONAL DEPLOYMENT

Many people have experiences that bring them to the Red Cross. For Ellie, it was her first CPR class at the Red Cross, learning Lifeguarding skills. As you grow older, you think of ways to give back to the skills that enabled you to perform your passion.

For Ellie, it was simply helping others. Before moving to Alaska, DC native Ellie Rubenstein used to drive along the Clara Barton parkway and has always looked up to the founder of the American Red Cross. When she moved to Alaska, El-lie’s first engagement with the American Red Cross was teaching restorative yoga at the local military base. The passion and dedication to helping others led her to the local American Red Cross office one day and she craved more involvement.

She spent the year getting her hands dirty, through Service to the Armed Forc-es, Disaster Action Team, and Development. There simply was not any area that she was not interested in. At the culmination of the annual Real Heroes event, El-lie was sad and did not know where to help next. Coincidentally, the Earthquake in Nepal Happened. Without any hesitation, Ellie raised her hand to help. Unaware what she had signed up for, she wondered f she had done the right thing, and would she really be able to help her local Red Cross chapter by going to Nepal.

A week later, with the support of the local chapter, she was packed and ready to go and more importantly, with the skills learned at the American Red Cross of Alaska, she was confident she could assist in any way needed with this major international relief event. Deployed for five weeks, Ellie arrived one month after the major earthquake and was American Red Cross individual #4 on the ground.

Ellie Rubenstein Reflects On Her Experience in Nepal

While the local American Red Cross chapter was in the midst of responding to the earthquake, they were also setting up their chapter for the American Red Cross Nepal. Balancing between setting up a chapter delegation and responding to a disaster relief area was more hands on experience to learn how an NGO truly operates at the epicenter of humanitarian relief.

Ellie’s job description was on the program side, meeting with local Red Cross chapters, in three different districts to identify immediate needs. Right after she arrived in Nepal, following Gail McGovern’s visit, Gail McGovern created for the Red Cross for the first time, a pool of $500,000 for immediate needs. Ellie’s job was to determine the most efficient use of this funding.

Every day was an adventure, when the coun-try was still experiencing 1-2 aftershocks a day, learning to write legal agreements and dis-tribute cash with no legal bank account. You understand what it means to operate in the third world when abiding by 1st world principles and values.

There is no greater chance for anyone to un-derstand the 7 fundamental principles of the American Red Cross than by deploying as part for the Red Cross in the greatest time of need. Ellie experienced overwhelming compassion and truly received more than she could ever give.

Traveling, learning, talking, Ellie discovered the vast majority were female related needs and funded everything from female birthing centers, female showers in camps, female volunteers to collect beneficiary data, cultural centers and water tanks. No words can describe watching young children and mothers so thankful to not have to walk two hours, for a clean private shower thanks to the Red Cross. More importantly while every country was represented by the Red Cross, locals had a particular affinity for anyone who showed up with a smile and an American Red Cross logo.

Thank you so much for your donations for financial year 15 (FY15). The American Red Cross of Alaska cannot operate without the help of our donors and so we thank you for allowing us to do the work that we do.

The money we raise goes to help those who have been affected by disaster and allows us to provide food, clothing and shelter to them, as well as provide comfort to those whose lives have been turned upside down. Not only do we stay during the disasters, but we are there after the events to ensure that families and communities are rebuilt and able to move forward.

In conjunction with our volunteers, we are able to ensure that every penny designated for Alaska, stays in Alaska and goes towards these disaster victims.

Besides the disaster assistance provided by the American Red Cross of Alaska, we are working on Preparedness and Prevention programs, such as the Home Fire Campaign, designed to reduce home fire deaths by 25% over the next 5 years by installing free smoke detectors with 10 year lithium batteries in the homes of financially challenged neighborhoods. The funds donated to this program help cover the cost of materials, travel and installation costs.

We could never do what we do without this financial assistance. American Red Cross is the only Congressionally Chartered nonprofit in the country, with a mandate to provide humanitarian aid but, yet, we are not federally funded. All aid is dependent on the generosity of our donors, corporate part-ners and grant and foundation gifts. We depend on our donors to help us continue our mission and to help their fellow Alaskans who have experienced tremendous loss. With your help, the American Red Cross of Alaska will be there with food, shelter, clothes, a warm blanket, comfort and hope.

In the 2015 financial year, 140 of the almost 600 volunteers in Alaska reported a total of 8,874 hours worked.

Every single day, the American Red Cross of Alaska helps people in emergencies. Whether it’s one displaced family, thousands of disaster victims, or providing care and comfort to an ill or injured service member or veteran or support to a military family member, our vital work is made possible by people like you. It is through the time and care of ordinary people that we can do extraordinary things.

Nationally, the Red Cross has nearly 400,000 volunteers, which represents more than 90 percent of the Red Cross workforce. Across the organization, the Red Cross has an average 13 volunteers for every one employee.

The American Red Cross of Alaska is always looking for people with various backgrounds, talents and skill levels. Our needs are often specific based on current events and levels of ground support, but we’ll do our best to accommodate your desire to get involved!

• Volunteer Management: Assist with volunteer recruitment, placement, record keeping and recognition.

• Disaster Services: Provide food, shelter, comfort and home for families affected by major disasters such as fires, and floods.

• Disaster Action Team: Volunteers need to respond to single-family fires with a disaster action team supervisor.

• Disaster Preparedness Presenter: Educate how to be prepared before a disaster occurs.

Take, Teach or Host a class. Regardless of age or occupation, our health and safety courses offer peace of mind to all who participate. Become a Health and Safety instructor and teach community classes such as CPR/AED and First Aid. Become certified and teach American Red Cross Babysitting courses to teenagers.

Armed Forces Caseworker – Ensure delivery of emergency communications for members of the military and their families.

Alaska is a unique place in the nation and indeed the world. Its geographic location, rugged terrain and immense undeveloped regions make emergency preparedness and response challenging and exciting. Extreme and unpredictable weather conditions, harsh arctic climate, and lack of infrastructure contribute to difficulties

that arise when administering emergency services.

Challenges like extended periods of darkness in the winter and cmmunities that are accessible only by air or water require special logistical planning. In spite of the aforementioned obstacles, the American Red Cross of Alaska has had a successful history of providing humanitarian and emergency services to people in need. Today, the organization continues to grow and develop new strategies to overcome obstacles and meet future

challenges with innovation, energy and commitment.
