PROJECTED PITCHING MATCHUPSThe Mavs will turn to the weekend rotation of senior lefty Brad Vassar (2-5, 4.37 ERA) on Friday, senior righty Trae Patterson (3-1, 5.03 ERA) on Saturday and junior right-hander Ka’ikepono Anderson (0-2, 5.27 ERA) on Sunday. Troy is expected to counter with senior right-hander Andrew Crane (3-3, 3.84 ERA), senior righty Daren Osby (5-0, 4.27 ER) and junior righty Rush Hixon (2-2, 4.89 ERA).
Vassar, a native of McKinney, Texas, has worked in 11 games with eight starts, tossing 45.1 innings with 43 hits and 17 walks allowed, striking out 33. On Friday at Georgia Southern, Vassar was the tough-luck loser, allowing two hits and four runs in a career-high tying 6.2 innings, with just two runs earned, walking two and striking out six on 91 pitches. In conference, Vassar is 1-4 with a 4.91 ERA in his six starts, walking 11 with 27 hits allowed in 29.1 innings, striking out 21. UTA sports a 3-5 record in games that Vassar has started in 2018. In his four-year UTA career, Vassar is 8-16 with a 4.96 ERA in 172.1 innings, allowing 63 walks and striking out 103.
Crane, a first-team All-Sun Belt selection in 2017, has made 10 starts for Troy, working 58.2 innings with 59 hits and 18 walks allowed, striking out 51. Last Friday vs. Arkansas State, Crane tossed 6.1 strong innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, not issuing a walk and striking out five. The 2017 Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year, Crane worked 40 consecutive shutout innings as a junior from the end of March into the conference tournament. He ranked fourth in the nation with a 1.47 ERA, tops in the conference.
Patterson has worked in 10 weekend starts in 2018, tossing 53.2 innings, allowing 64 hits and 17 walks, striking out 39. On Saturday at Georgia Southern, Patterson worked six innings in a win, allowing five hits and one run, walking two and striking out six. In league action, Patterson is 3-0 with a 4.50 ERA in six starts, walking nine and striking out 27 in 32 innings. UTA is 6-4 in Patterson’s starts in 2018. In his two-year career, Patterson is 10-5 with a 3.55 ERA in 152 innings, walking 39 and striking out 112. Last year vs. Troy, Patterson was a winner in seven strong innings, allowing seven hits and two runs, not issuing a walk but striking out two, surren-dering just two runs in the fourth in a 5-2 UTA win in the nightcap of a doubleheader to open the series.
Osby has tossed a team-high 59 innings, allowing 58 hits and 24 walks, striking out 44. He allowed nine runs over three innings in his last start vs. Arkansas State, walking one with four strikeouts.
Anderson, a native of Hawaii, has made nine weekend starts in 2018, tossing 42.2 innings with 55 hits and eight walks allowed, ranking second on the club with 34 strikeouts. On Sunday vs. Georgia Southern, Anderson worked six innings in a hard-luck loss, allowing five hits and three runs – two earned, striking out eight. Anderson has made six conference starts, with an 0-1 record and a 3.45 ERA in 28.2 innings, walking just six and striking out 29. The Mavs are 4-5 in Anderson’s starts.
Troy has also used Hixon in a starting role. Last week vs. Arkansas State in the finale, Hixon worked two innings, allowing six hits and four runs, walking one and striking out three. N the year, Hixon as appeared in 12 games with eight starts, allowing 46 hits and 16 walks with 36 strikeouts in 38.2 innings.
LEADING THE MAVSThe Mavs have hit .264 as a team in 2018, scoring 209 runs in 41 games, with 29 homers and a .357 on-base percentage, stealing 27 bases. UTA has fielded .971 as a team with 38 double plays turned and 15 runners nabbed stealing. On the bump, UTA has a 4.76 team ERA in 370.2 innings, allowing 179 walks and striking out 279.
UTA has been paced at the plate by sophomore Zac Cook, who is sporting a nine-game hitting streak, while hitting .323 with a homer and 20 RBI. Omar Salinas has a .317 average with a homer and 12 RBI, catcher Will Olson has hit .286 with six homers and 24 RBI and outfielder David Renning has hit .286 with two homers and seven RBI. Senior Christian Hollie has batted .284 with three homers and 21 RBI, sophomore Josh Minjarez has hit .266 with three homers and 22 RBI and junior Noah Vaughan sports a .263 average with seven homers and 24 RBI.
In relief, senior Daniel James (1-3, 3.32 ERA) has six saves in 2018 and 22 saves in his career. Logan Austin (4-0, 2.86 ERA), David Moffat (3-5, 2.86 ERA), Jordon West (1-0, 3.22 ERA), Andrew Gross (2-0, 3.32 ERA), Ryan Buss (1-1, 4.22 ERA), Dylan Schneider (1-0, 6.65 ERA) and Drew Gooch (1-0, 8.31 ERA) have each appeared in double-digit games in relief.

MINJAREZ EARNS SUN BELT WEEKLY HONORS After cranking five extra-base hits during UTA’s five-game week, sophomore shortstop Josh Minjarez has been named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on April 116
A native of San Angelo, Texas, Minjarez hit .429 (9-for-21) over the five-game stretch, leading UTA to a series win over Arkansas State and a midweek win over No. 23 Sam Houston State. Minjarez cranked four doubles and had a game-tying homer over the week, driving in five runs and stealing a base.
SCOUTING THE TROJANSTroy (28-13, 11-7 Sun Belt) is coming off a narrow loss at Alabama, 4-3, as Crimson Tide first-year head coach Brad Bohannon saw Alabama hold on to an early 4-0 lead for the win. Troy has hit .292 as a team in 2018, with 292 runs scored in 41 games, belting 80 doubles, 21 triples and 25 homers, stealing 74 bases. On the mound, Troy has a strong 3.79 team ERA, walking 154 and striking out 330 in 360.2 innings, with opponents hitting .243. Defensively, the Trojans have fielded .976 with 28 double plays and 16 runners thrown out stealing.
At the dish, Joey Denison paces the team with a .378 average, 14 doubles, three homers and 50 RBI, owning a 22-20 walk-strikeout ratio with 12 steals. Matt Sanders has hit .370 with four homers, with Rigsby Mosley adding a .302 average with four homers and 23 RBI. Six of Troy’s regulars are hitting over .300 on the year, with six players owning at least three homers.
In relief, CJ Carter (5-3, 3.48 ERA) has appeared in a staff-best 20 games with five saves and 55 strikeouts in 44 innings. Lance Johnson (2-0, 3.48 ERA), Jackson Cofer (0-0, 1.89 ERA), Corey Childress (3-2, 4.55 ERA), Rush Hixon (2-2, 4.89 ERA) and Sadler Goodwin (3-3, 6.04 ERA) have each appeared in double-digit games in relief. Max Newton (2-0, 1.65 ERA) has worked in eight games and five starts, allowing 22 hits and 13 walks in 271 innings, fanning 17.
OLSON NAMED SUN BELT PLAYER OF THE WEEKJunior catcher Will Olson was named Sun Belt Player of the Week on March 20 after powering UTA to a 5-0 week, including a series sweep of Georgia State to open league play. A native of Sherman, Texas, Olson hit .350 (7-for-20) during the week, with three homers, seven RBI and a double, drawing four bases and getting plunked by a pitch. He sported a .850 slugging and a .462 on-base percentage during UTA’s 5-0 week, which included an 18-inning win at No. 6 Texas A&M. In the weekend series, Olson was 6-for-11, reaching base safely in 8-of-13 trips to the dish. He ended the win over GSU in the middle game with a walk-off blast in the 10th inning, his sec-ond homer of the game.
DANIEL JAMES ON RELIEVER OF THE YEAR WATCH LISTAfter leading the Sun Belt Conference with 13 saves in 2017, UTA senior right-hander Daniel James has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Watch List, given annually to the top reliever in college baseball.
James, a native of Lubbock, Texas, had a historic 2017 season for the Mavericks despite missing the first three weeks of the year after offseason hip surgery. James returned with a flourish to own the second-most saves in UTA single-season history (13). He worked 28.1 innings, allowing only 25 hits and seven walks, fanning 23. James saved 11 of his games in Sun Belt play and ranked sec-ond in UTA history in single-season saves. A 6-foot-4, 215-pounder, James is the only pitcher in the Sun Belt Conference to earn a spot on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List.
UTA TRIO NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCEUTA baseball catcher Will Olson, starting pitcher Trae Patterson and slugger Omar Salinas have been voted to the preseason All-Sun Belt Conference team by the league coaches.
The trio of Mavericks were each named All-Sun Belt in 2017 after breakout seasons. UTA returns four members of the All-Sun Belt team in 2017, including senior right-hander Daniel James, who paced the circuit with 13 saves as a junior.
A native of Sherman, Texas, Olson was named second-team All-Sun Belt as a redshirt sophomore in 2017, making 39 starts behind the plate and hitting .322. He was a steady presence from the left side of the plate, reaching base safely in 44 of his 46 starts. Olson owned a team-high .439 on-base percentage, belting nine doubles and two homers, while driving in 28. Behind the plate, Olson threw out eight would-be basestealers.
Patterson, a native of Haslet, Texas, went 7-4 with a 2.75 ERA in his UTA debut season after transferring from North Central Texas, Kansas State and Cisco. He posted a 6-2 mark and a 2.59 ERA in conference play, leading the team in innings (98.1). Patterson spun 11 quality starts as a junior, including working at least six innings without an earned run in matchups with ULM, Arkansas State and No. 29 Coastal Carolina.
A product of Arlington High School, Salinas had a breakout 2017 season as a first-team All-Sun belt selec-tion. He led the Mavs in average (.333), doubles (11), hits (65), runs (45), homers (11), RBI (44), walks (33), slugging (.559 and on-base percentage (.439). Salinas hit .366 in Sun Belt play with 10 of his 11 hom-ers. Salinas reached base safely in 46 of his 50 starts. While playing his home games in massive Clay Gould Ballpark, Salinas hit .286 at home and .378 on the road. He tallied two four-hit games, five games of at least three RBI and totaled two multi-homer games.
MAVS PICKED SECOND IN SUN BELT WEST IN PRESEASONA year after claiming the Sun Belt Conference Western Division Title, UTA baseball has been picked to fin-ish second in the division in 2018 by the league coaches.
UTA, which went 20-10 in Sun Belt play last year, earned two first-place votes in the West and was picked to finish second behind Louisiana. Texas State also earned a first-place vote in the Western Division.

2017 FINAL SEASON NOTES• UTA finished the season 30-25, including a program record 20-10 in conference play. • The Mavs set a program record with a 17-8 road mark, including a school-record 12-3 record in road conference games. • UTA moved into the top-25 poll for two consecutive weeks, ranking as high as No. 23 by Collegiate Baseball. It marked UTA’s first national ranking since 2001. • UTA won 10 consecutive league games, tying the school record, also set in 1992, 2006, 2014 and 2017. • UTA won its first western division title in its brief history in the Sun Belt. • The Mavs reached 30 wins for the 25th time in program history and the sixth time under Coach Darin Thomas. • UTA won 30 or more games for the second consecutive year, a first since 2013-14. • The Mavs swept No. 20 Louisiana, the first sweep over the Ragin’ Cajuns in program history and UTA’s first series win over ULL since 1976. • UTA set a new program record with a 5-4 record vs. top-25 teams, the most wins in a season over ranked teams in school history. • The Mavs earned ranked midweek wins over No. 4 Texas Tech and No. 23 Texas A&M. • UTA boasted two of the top attendances in school history, including setting a new Clay Gould Stadium record with 2,008 fans vs. No. 1 TCU on Feb. 21. • The Mavs had the second-most saves in single-season history (18). • After starting 2-7 to open the year, UTA went 28-18 over the last three months of the year. • UTA ranks as the third most successful program in Sun Belt Conference play since joining the league in 2014. Overall, UTA has the fourth-most wins of any team in the league since 2014. • UTA is 108-3 over the last four years when holding an eighth-inning lead, including 30-1 in 2017.

UTA ANNOUNCES 2019 SIGNING CLASS IN DECEMBERUTA baseball has signed nine future student-athletes to a national letter of intent, it was announced by Coach Darin Thomas.
“This is a great group of student-athletes that we are excited to add to the UTA baseball fami-ly,” Thomas said. “The class has a nice mix of high school and junior college talents and each of the junior college players have had great freshmen seasons. We believe each of these young men can have a positive impact on our program.”
