PRINCIPAL’S AWARDS

Spotted at lunchtime in the Library. Congratulations, you guys have won an Around School prize. See Mrs Watson next week during lunch or interval.

New buildings and facilities are great to have but the most important input to student success at school is the quality of the staff. Our staff work hard to identify the learning needs of students and find ways to meet these needs. Information is gathered through contact with previous schools, Ministry of Education, assessments, teacher observation and parent feedback, and is used to develop a picture of a student’s strengths and areas for development.

A ‘normal’ school programme at any level will provide more than enough opportunities for students to learn and be challenged across the breadth of the curriculum. Sometimes, however, additional strategies are needed to help a student to achieve their best. Students may require support with a range of cognitive, behavioural, emotional and social needs. Support can include reader writers, teacher aides, special programmes, in-class strategies, alternative education, counselling, group programmes, mentoring, rewards, new courses, and amended curricula.

For example, about 15% of students in the school use reader/writers for tests and exams. In order to access this support, the students are assessed with specialist assessment tools to determine their area of need. We have a team of reader/writers from the community

who give their time freely to support these students during tests. There is an ongoing programme with these students of confirming the support is still required and in place.

One of the challenges of doing a good job at identifying learning needs of individuals and groups is that it creates more work and a greater demand for resources. The better we get at finding out what the barriers are to a student’s education, the more resource we want to put into addressing the need. It can take significant time and work to draw together all of the information available and to develop strategies. I commend those who do this work - our teachers, support staff, guidance and support teams - for the positive difference they make in people’s lives.

We know that there will never be enough money to meet every need as well as we would like. However, if the government wants us to get closer to the levels of support our community expects, then we must do more than just redistribute funding within education. Additional funding is required in education and I would encourage you to advocate for this when the opportunity arises.

Peer Mediators Big Day Out and Peace WeekName the Robot CompetitionOur students were excited to receive five new Lego Mindset kits thanks to Dave Galletly (Scott Service International).

In no time, robots were being built and programmed and it was clear these would be a big asset to students who were interested in robotics and computer programming.

A competition was held to name each one and so we present:

During the week of 8–12 August it was Peace Week. This year's theme was 'Dialogue for Peace'. There were a number of activities organised this week including the Youth Workers doing activities with the Year 7 classes, a Peace Week competition and gathering to make origami cranes. A large number of students participated in the origami crane making; these will be taken to the Peace Park in Horishima when the Darfield High School students go to Japan. Congratulations to Kelly Rod and Aneliz Gardner who won the canteen vouchers for the peace quote competition.

On Thursday 18 August, Olivia Lemon, Emma Kellock, Caleb Banks, Esther Blain, Mrs Cartman and I travelled to Oaklands Primary School in Christchurch for the Peer Mediators Big Day Out.

At these Big Day Outs, mediators combine forces to extend their knowledge, help motivate mediators, and share tips and tricks along the way. Other schools involved were Hanmer Springs Primary, Redwood Primary, Redcliffs Primary and Springston Primary. As we were the only High School, it was a great leadership opportunity for us, and we got to run a lot of games and some information sessions with the primary school students. It was a great way for us to learn how to communicate better and it was also a lot of fun.

Darfield High School runs a nationally recognised programme called Peer Mediation. This programme is problem-solving by youth with youth, and is for students to help students solve disputes. Mediations take place at intervals and lunch times to help solve problems with friendships, relationships, bullying, cyberbullying, etc. We currently have a team of about 30 trained mediators ranging from Year 8 to Year 13.

Students from all over the South Island have the unique opportunity to participate in master classes, public performances and competitions. Southern Jam is the only event of its kind in the South Island, and is a great chance for young musicians to learn from other great, well respected musicians and the competition offers the opportunity to put into practice what they have learnt. The public performances give them great experience and develop their confidence in playing to audiences.

Our Jazz band competed in the ARA Jazz Quest on Friday 5 August. Jazz Quest is an annual competition for secondary school jazz bands, showcasing the quality of some of the country's top school jazz bands and musicians.

Bands are awarded gold, silver and bronze awards, and individual musicians are presented awards for outstanding contributions on their instruments, as well as for original compositions and arrangements.

Being veterans of this competition season, we were much more confident on stage and had a good groove going. Although the pieces weren’t necessarily as tight as they have been some years, the improvements in individual playing were awesome. We received a Bronze Award. Unfortunately, we headed home without supporting other bands due to the prospect of snow— at least there was a bit at school to make it worthwhile.

Wednesday 10 August brought another awesome trip to Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival in Blenheim.

We revisited some of the bars and cafes we’ve played in previously, including spending Thursday in Picton. At various times, some of us went to watch other bands, which always adds to the experience.

The prizegiving on Saturday was really enjoyable, with well-deserved special mentions going to Lilian (bass) and Selina (guitar) and Holly being awarded the Robin Randall Award for Most Outstanding Vocalist. Awesome work by everyone on our not-quite-gold silver.

The gala concert was held in the new and very flash ASB theatre, and the bands were allowed to watch the second half including the judge’s performance, the All Stars band and the overall competition winners, a combo from Cashmere High. It was cool to see so many parents come up to see what was happening.

Sunday came all too fast, bringing to an end the last trip for eight of us, after four years in many cases. It was a very sad time to leave Blenheim, but we sure have many incredible memories. I’d like to say a huge thanks to the family for an amazing birthday and also to Mr and Mrs Balchin and Mrs Wilson for putting

up with us all. It has been an honour to be with you all. Long may these trips continue!

You can see the Jazz Band and Holly Kimber perform on stage at the Darfield High School Talent Quest next week, Tuesday 6 September at 7.00 pm.

It has been a busy term for the Art Department, with two exhibitions running concurrently in different locations. Our biennial exhibition in the school was a success, with many visitors commenting on the standard and display of work. We are so lucky to have the expertise of June Milne in the department. This year’s Year 7s have produced some beautiful work. I can’t wait to see the collected results of their individual contributions at the end of the year.

A few students were lucky enough to sell their work. This provides a much valued lift in confidence for the students and clearly communicates the interest of those visitors who make purchases. Thank you to those people and congratulations to the three winners of ‘The People’s Choice Award’ – Saskia Kremers (Year 10), Anna Hefferon (Year12), and Eboni Lawrence (Year 10).

Our second exhibition was of Year 13 work at Down by the Liffey Gallery in Lincoln. Our students were very lucky to have this opportunity, which allowed them to connect with a wider audience. The gallery staff made the process easy for us, which went some way to compensate for the ridiculous amount of time spent getting the work ‘gallery ready’. Reception of the work was positive and I don’t mind sharing the observation that our students' work was considered of a better quality and presentation than the high school exhibiting in the weeks preceding us. Yay us!

Thank you to those teachers and students who generously gave their time to support both exhibitions and to the students for your artistry, collectivism, and enthusiasm. It’s why we do this. Ms Smith (HOD Art)

This week, during assemblies, students and staff celebrated the success of another year fundraising for World Vision. Alex Hitchmough, School Partnership Manager for World Vision, visited to thank everyone for their contribution in raising funds so Syrian refugee children could attend school and be provided with basic stationery and equipment.

Our school raised over $7,000 and was in the top 31 schools—a great effort from everyone. Because of this, we are proud to announce that our school won a scholarship for Gus Thomas to spend three and a half days in Auckland during the school holidays. Along with 30 other students from around the country, Gus will develop an understanding of social justice issues, leadership skills and ways in which they can effect change in their communities. They will be exposed to a number of World Vision experts in development, advocacy and emergency response where they will be involved in thought-provoking and hands-on activities.

They will also have the opportunity to meet with a number of community and New Zealand leaders who have a critical role to play in social justice issues. They will come away with the skills and knowledge needed to take action in their spheres of influence. This will be a great experience for Gus and we will be looking forward to hearing about it.

Olivia, Georgie and Eloise joined Alex on stage and, after announcing our school's total and recapping on the events held, they presented the top collectors with certificates and prizes.

Celebration Assembly

For some time the school youth workers have been looking forward to having a little space of our own that we can work out of, and now that space has arrived in the form of a converted container. Our new office will soon be kitted out with desks, chairs, bean bags, and games and will have

some outside landscaping done. The space will be wonderful for meeting kids for mentoring sessions, Hannah's youth coach appointments, and running programmes like Girl.

Once set up properly, the office will also help staff and students to know when we are around, with a sign identifying whether or not we're in school each day.

We'd like to thank Mr Morris for allowing this space to go ahead; Ross Meder for his help with the practical elements of the project; Sam Broughton for co-ordinating everything and all others involved with converting and shifting the container.

11ISSUE 9 / DHS Dispatch

It all started on 13 August 2016 when the Year 13 Outdoor Ed class began our three-day-long trek of the rugged wilderness. We arrived at the start of the track at 2.00 pm. When we arrived the area was cold and there was a slight drizzle moving through the valley. We shrugged it off and started walking, crossing a small one-person man-made wire bridge over the rapidly flowing Hurunui River. We got to the other side of the river with high hopes that the tramp was going to be great with bridges crossing all the rivers we were yet to come to.

After travelling for about 15 minutes we were lost and Alan had forgotten to lock the van—so far so good. The track we were following was rapidly getting more bushy and harder to make our way through, with our packs becoming stuck on a lot of branches. After about 40 minutes of struggling through this, it dawned upon us that we had taken a wrong turn and we would now be forced to cross the freezing cold river.

After more kilometres of travelling, and numerous river crossings, it was getting

dark and the group's morale was hitting an all time low with freezing cold legs and heavy packs. We turned on our head torches and continued our travels through the night. We still had poor visibility but the moon was on our side slightly lighting up our path. Before long we stumbled across the DOC hut that we had been striving to get to before dark. It was only seven bunks, so Ben thankfully took one for the team and slept on the floor.

We planned to rise at 8.00 the next morning but it turned out that we actually got up at 9.00 and began the next stage of the tramp with a massive climb up Mount Jollie Brook in the snow. This was quite the task with some of the members pushing faster than others. When we finally got through the snow and made it to the top, the view was amazing— well worth the pain taken to achieve the climb. Going down was slightly sketchy, but still a lot of fun, as the snow made for a giant slide down the mountain.

We decided to stay at the hut area again and bivvy out in the wilderness. We achieved that by making a seven-man hut out of a tarpaulin and some sticks (I don't think anyone got

sleep apart from Jack). We woke up early and began the final trek home from Jollie Brook Hut, down past Gabriel's Hut and along the Hurunui home. This walk was long and challenging and there was a large uphill at the very end that we were disappointed to see. Despite all our tired bodies, we walked without stopping up the hill with no talk from anyone. From there it was smooth sailing as we pottered along the tracks until we came to the last bridge we needed to cross. One by one, we crossed the river and finally we were close. It was a 15 minutes walk back to the far carpark where we stopped at the end of the track, with Alan hitchhiking back to the car to drive it over and get us. We were all completely shattered and we quickly packed the van and made the long journey home.

Thank you to Alan Hislop, our instructor and driver.

It was 25 August and we set off on our adventure to Temple Basin, Arthur's Pass. It was a very wet day when we set off from the vans on our journey to the unknown; we are thankful for our instructor, Alan, and our teacher, Mr Dickens, Dr Mckenzie, and Miss Hely for supplying us with gear if we ran out or it got wet. They taught us so much.

With a nice walk up the hill we hit the snow when the hut was in sight. A warm lunch awaited us at the Temple Basin Ski Lodge (this is where we spent the first night in a nice comfy bed). After the warm lunch, we set off out into the snow and learnt some new skills to help us survive in the alpine environment. Some of these skills were self-arresting, plunge and walking in the snow.

The next day we put on our crampons and headed up the ski field to the back lodge,

where we cooked a yummy lunch that warmed us all up. Then we went out in the snow and learnt how to cut steps, how to walk with crampons and how to locate people using avalanche transceivers when they are stuck under the snow.

Then we walked back down to the lodge where we spent our afternoon building our snow caves which we spent the night in. After we got out snow caves built, cooked our own dinner and then went out and had a comfortable and warm sleep in our caves. We then woke up and showered and had a nice warm cooked breakfast for us; then we packed up our gear and headed back down to the vans.

A group of keen Years 7–13 students enrolled in a workshop held at DHS on Tuesday 23 August with the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

Here the students learnt about the Dance industry; professional auditions, requirements etc. Pagan Doran, the educator for the RNZB, also taught the students a dance from the current show Giselle.

The workshop was great fun, and the students had the opportunity to learn something new. We'll certainly be asking for another workshop next year!

DELF Exams Coming UpOn Saturday 3 September, four of our students will be heading to Burnside High School to sit the DELF examinations. The Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française is an official qualification awarded by the French Ministry of Education, and now available worldwide to secondary students who are studying French. The DELF is recognised throughout the world as reliable proof of proficiency in the French language. It is a permanent qualification, which students can include on their CV, and which gives them access to opportunities in places where NCEA credits might not be recognised. Only five schools in the Christchurch region are offering this opportunity to their students and we are one of them! We are wishing our students the best of luck!

On Thursday 25 August, two Year 7 teams participated in the Otago Daily Times Extra Quiz! Canterbury edition. The teams both participated and preformed well, but did not place.

Darfield One (above—left to right): Oscar Gosling, Johnny Millar and Molly Mannering scored 82 points to come 30th.

Darfield Two (below—left to right): Vincent Sanderson, Cameron Newell and Charlotte Moana scored 79 points to come 38th.

There were about 70 teams in total so students preformed rather well for not having much practice before hand. Thank you to Miss Kensington and the parents who helped with transport.

Over the last week, students have been competing for the title of Chess Champion. Each game needed to be played within a lunchtime. It was a fantastic week of chess competition between all year levels and started with the preliminary rounds on 18 and 19 August to select the top Years 7 and 8 students.

Congratulations to Max Whyte (7CC) and Vincent Mandapat (8HL) who made it into the rounds. The next two days were for these players and the Years 9 and 10 students. Once again, Max and Vincent defeated all opponents and made it into Round 3 with the Years 11 and 12 students. In the end, Max Whyte placed 4th, Daniel Felipe (11RS) was 3rd, and George Brown (11RS) was second. Vincent won the championship for the second year running. Well done, Vincent!

George Brown has been awarded a $2,000 regional scholarship for an overseas high school exchange programme with Your Education.

George represents all the qualities of an outstanding exchange student, including independence, maturity and an outgoing personality. He will travel to the Netherlands in December this year to complete a two-month high school exchange programme.

The regional scholarship recognises a student who is passionate about their region of New Zealand, outgoing and creative and a strong academic student.

Darfield St John Youth Division was well represented at the Canterbury District competitions held recently in Christchurch.

As well as providing judges, patients and marshals, Darfield had two intermediate teams, one senior individual and a colour party competing. Once again, they all preformed at a high standard and made Darfield proud.

The Colour Party (the flag-bearing group) performed outstandingly and were placed second. The intermediate teams were placed 1st overall (Jenny Walter, Charlotte Courtney, Samuel

Canterbury District St John Youth CompetitionsIreland and Rebecca Inch), and 2nd overall (Niamh Guy, Zahara Sutton, Emily Cullen and Amanda Busch). Hannah Ireland was placed second overall in the senior individual section.

A real credit must go to all the hard work and dedication contributed to trainings over the last few months, by cadets and leaders.

Hannah and the teams will now go on to represent Canterbury District at the Regional Competitions to be held on the weekend 23–25 September at Glentui.

Then the training REALLY begins! We wish them all well.

Page 15: 2 September Newsletter.indd - Darfield High School

On Sunday 21 August, a group of six students from Darfield High ventured up to Mt Cheeseman Ski Field to participate in the Canterbury Primary and Intermediate Schools Ski Champs.

The day did not start that well with Mr Adams' car refusing to go into gear on the way to the carpark. The weather gods were certainly not on our side either, with very strong wind gusts playing havoc with the timing lights on the courses, and poor visibility in the morning making skiing difficult even without the wind.

The Year 7/8 competition was not until the afternoon, so the students got plenty of time to get some ski practice in during the morning. Unfortunately, Harry Cookson had a fall on his way up the T bar, hurting his wrist and ending his skiing before he had had a race.

However, the remaining members: Mari Henderson, Monique Weber, Tom Freeman, Maia Adams and Jo Veronese, completed their runs over the blue and red courses. There was a huge number of students entered in the event this year—280 across the age groups and 60 in the Years 7 and 8 category.

Mari Henderson was placed 2nd in the 7/8 Girls and was closely followed by Monique Weber into 3rd. In the Boys 7/8 Category, Tom Freeman was placed third.

Combining the times of the top four skiers for each team resulted in the Darfield Year 7/8 team placing second overall!!

A huge thanks to the parents for taking the students up for the day and managing them through some rather unpleasant conditions.

The 1st XV celebrated the end of the rugby season by coming together in the Gym for their Prizegiving.

Mr Bell ran through the highlights of the season, showing photos from a training session with Kahu Carey from the CRFU, then the success of bringing home the Brockbank Graves Trophy after three games, the last being very intense and down to a final try from Ben Millar.

College Day Rugby resulted in two losses to Rangiora and Hornby and two wins against Middleton and Mt Hutt.

Then it was on to the Annual Quad Tournament—schools from around the Canterbury region come together for a day of games and, on this day, the team beat Geraldine and Mt Hutt, but lost to Ellesmere.

The Southern Tour was next and saw a loss to Timaru Boys' High School and a win against King's High School.

Finally, to finish the season, Darfield welcomed Adams Grammar School, visiting from the UK. It was a reminder to all that we were in the depths of winter with snow in the morning and driving rain to contend with. However, there was no shortage of competitive spirit, nor spectators, as the teams gathered on the sports field. A very challenging game resulted in a win for Darfield 10–7.

The following awards were then presented:

Most Points

• 1st Ben Millar (40)

• 2nd: Cole Spinks (33)

Best Try

• Ant Searle (during the King's High game, retrieved a kick and ran 60m, beating five defenders)

Best Tackle

• Aidan Tuhill (against Adams Grammar was a try-saving and, therefore, game-saving tackle)

Most Outstanding Individual Performance in any Match

• Morgan Heselwood (against Westland High School at Darfield)

Most Versatile/Mr Utility Award

• Ed Searle (for playing everywhere from Flanker to Wing to Flanker again and Centre)

Haka Award

• Devon Mount (for outstanding performances and enthusiasm)

Most Tries

• Ben Millar (eight tries including the most important one of the year at Westport)

MVP Points Awards 2016 (as voted by the coaches)

• Daniel Felipe: 4th Place on 7 Points

• Jack Devlin and Jed Roessink: 2nd = each on 9 Points

• Devon Crequer: 1st Place on 10 Points

It's a Wrap for Rugby!

Two teams competed this year for Darfield High School at the Canterbury Schools One Day Horse Trial. The field was large, with 18 schools represented, and 23 teams in total. Unfortunately, the weather was dismal and most riders had to contend with driving rain and freezing cold southerlies on and off for most of the day.

Both teams made a good start on the dressage, with the team consisting of Niamh Rayne, Jodie Rollings, Katherine Hadler and Georgia Allison lying in first place. Our second team, Caitlin Aubrey, Caitlin Rayne and Mikayla Jarvis, also did well in the dressage,

Canterbury Schools One Day Horse Triallying in 15th place overall. The wheels came off a little in the cross-country with some costly stops which we could not recover from, even though all of the riders performed well in the show jumping.

Overall, this relatively young team did very well, considering the trying conditions, and should be proud of their achievements. They should continue to develop and should be looking strong for next year's competition. Congratulations to all the riders and a big thank you to the mums who made this possible. Mrs Voss
