2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

6 And when they came to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. 7 Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by the ark of God. 8 And David became angry because of the Lord’s outbreak against Uzzah; and he called the name of the place Perez Uzzah to this day.

2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

9 David was afraid of the Lord that day; and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10 So David would not move the ark of the Lord with him into the City of David; but David took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three months. And the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his household.

12 Now it was told King David, saying, “The Lord has blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with gladness.

Christ-Centered Marriage

Christ-Centered Marriage

Marriage, one of the oldest institutions, is under attack

Satan is hard at work to convince people that marriage is “evolving”

People have bought into this idea and therefore are not working as hard at their marriages

Page 6: 2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

Christ-Centered Marriage

No one ever said marriage was easy, especially not our Lord

However, with God’s help and guidance, it certainly is easier

The Bible is clear on it’s teachings of faithfulness in marriage (Matt. 19); do we know what it takes to be faithful?

Page 7: 2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

Christ-Centered Marriage

Putting Christ in the center of our marriage is the key to being successful

Notice what God in the home will do for someone (II Sam. 6:6-12)

While the ark rested in the home of Obed-Edom, the Lord blessed him and his household

Christ-Centered Marriage

1. …will affect your speechHaving Christ as the center of our

lives and homes will affect the very way we speak

As a Christian, we know that we are commanded to watch our tongue (Js. 3)

Jesus tells us that what we say ultimately comes from the heart (Matt. 12:34-37; 15:18-20)

Page 9: 2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

Christ-Centered Marriage

1. …will affect your speech

It’s not just about what we do not say

It’s also about what we do say (Eph. 4:29;I Thess. 5:11)

A soft answer can turn away wrath and keep any argument from escalating (Prov. 15:1)

Page 10: 2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

Christ-Centered Marriage

1. …will affect your speech

Bottom line is that we cannot call ourselves Christians if we do not control our tongue (Js. 1:26)

If Christ is the center of our home, then it will change the way we speak to one another (Col. 3:1-10)

Christ-Centered Marriage

2. …will affect your mind (attitude)

There are many marriages that are affected by the mindset or attitude of one or both people

Being a child of God and putting Christ at the center of my home means that my mindset will be different (Rom. 12:2)

Page 12: 2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

Christ-Centered Marriage

2. …will affect your mind (attitude)

Paul said that we bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (II Cor. 10:5)

Paul urged us to have the mind of Christ, which entails putting others before ourselves, being a servant, and being humble (Phil. 2:1-8)

Christ-Centered Marriage

3. …will affect your actionsThe very way that we act in our

homes will be affected when we put Christ there

Jesus called us to be salt and light, and that includes inside the home (Matt. 5:13-16)

Paul said that a relationship with Christ demands different actions (Col. 3:1-10, 12-17)

Page 14: 2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

Christ-Centered Marriage

3. …will affect your actions

Following the Golden Rule is a good place to start (Matt. 7:12)

Peter talks about our actions towards one another in I Peter 3:1-7

Our conduct can go a long way in how our marriage will turn out

Page 15: 2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

Christ-Centered Marriage

4. …will affect your reactions

We often times work on our actions, but do we stop to think about our reactions?

Again, Proverbs 15:1 is one of those verses that speaks to the importance of reactions

Anger is a common reaction, but the Bible warns against it

Page 16: 2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

Christ-Centered Marriage

4. …will affect your reactions

Ephesians 4:26-27

We must have control of our reactions in our marriages

“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you” (Eph. 4:32)

Page 17: 2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

Christ-Centered Marriage

5. …will affect your love

Love, as the world sees it, is just a feeling that comes and goes

However, the Bible defines love as something different

Love is defined as permanent and not temporary (I Cor. 13:4-8)

Page 18: 2 Samuel 6:6-12 (NKJV)

Christ-Centered Marriage

5. …will affect your love

When Christ is in the home, the love is quite different

Love is the central part of the greatest commands (Matt. 22:39)

The love we are to have is to emulate that of Christ’s love for the church (Eph. 5:25)
