Develop Trust With Others

• Listen effectively• What the other person is saying is more important than your response

• Have empathy• You must understand and enter into another’s feelings to have

complete empathy

• Share trust• It’s contagious….trust others and they will more likely trust you

• Be accessible and responsible• Become available when needed and admit flaws

“The willingness of one party to be vulnerable to the actions of another party.”

Page 13: 2 My journey Top 7 things I learned along the way! Agenda.

13

• Conversations cease • Employees may be intimidated to talk to you…its lonely at the top!

• Workload shifts• Switch from technical to managerial

• More directive, less collaborative• Expected to be the leader and make decisions

• Management is not a democracy • Likability is nice but not necessary…might have to demand what

you want

• Set expectations and promote accountability • Be the example of satisfactory employee conduct

• Definition• Past focus on race, gender,

and disability (mainly used by state and federal programs)

• New focus includes age, family structure, sexual orientation, values, and job function

• Studies have found that diverse teams make better decisions. Better decisions help the bottom line!

• Demographic diversity is an indicator• Story of Dave from Youth Build Boston
