First and foremost, let us thank Allah s.w.t for His generous

and countless blessings that enables us to gather here

today. I would like to congratulate the Centre for Graduate

Studies for successfully organizing the International

Postgraduate Conference on Engineering (IPCE 2010).

With the theme “Innovative Postgraduate Students Towards A New Engineering

Ideology”, IPCE 2010 explores the theory, analysis, design efficiency and applications

underlying various fields of engineering. Since this is the first international conference

organized by Centre for Graduate Studies, this event will gather researchers and

scholars from all over the world to exchange knowledge and experience in their

respective fields. Thus, I am confident that IPCE 2010 will generate interesting and

innovative ideas pertaining to the future of postgraduate education and for a sustainable

tomorrow.

Finally, I would like to extend my heartiest congratulations to the organizer and

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

I warmly welcome you to our International Postgraduate

Conference on Engineering (IPCE 2010) which is organized

by the Centre for Graduate Studies with the assistance

from postgraduate students of UniMAP. This conference

will be the start of many series of postgraduate conference

in UniMAP involving all students from current students to

the newly registered students.

The main focus of this conference is to enhance the quality of research and boost

research work among students. The presented papers may be in form of a research

proposal, research progress or full paper. The idea is to give exposure to the new

students and equipped the current students with skill for technical writing.

We targeted 300 students to submit at least one paper for the conference. However, we

only managed to attract 115 participants with the total of 137 papers from 8 engineering

schools. These papers are presented within 4 oral presentation tracks consisting of 6

parallel sessions.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the planning and

organizing the IPCE 2010. Sincere thanks to our Vice Chancellor for approving the event

and supporting the research activities. I would also like to extend my gratitude to all

Deputy Deans from each school and all reviewers for their commitment and cooperation.

Last but not least, to the secretariats and organizing committee for making this event a

success.

Professor Dr. Ali Yeon bin Md.Shakaff

Profile Professor Dr. Ali Yeo n bin Md. Shakaff is currently a Professor in the School of Mechatronic Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and has been with the university since its inception in 2002. He started his academic career as a lecturer at the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1988. He obtained his B.Sc and Ph.D. in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England in 1982 and 1987 respectively. His current research interests are in the areas of Embedded Systems Design and Bio-inspired Sensors; focusing on efforts to enhance their performance and exploring potential applications in agriculture and environmental problems.

Keynote Abstract

Multidisciplinary Research – the Key to Future Innovations?

The world is intrinsically ‘multidisciplinary’, or more precisely, a seamless blend of ‘natural disciplines’, that over the years, have become more and more rigidly defined by man. Academic institutions particularly have been overly pre-occupied with disciplines and even sub-disciplines; hence the establishments of schools, faculties, departments etc. and they have to a large extent served their intended purposes. However, recent issues (both natural and man-made) such as climate change, growing population, declining food production, energy crisis, financial meltdown etc. strongly suggest an urgent requirement for a multidisciplinary effort in coming up with potential solutions. The emergence of new technology for mankind such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, renewable energy and many others again call for a multidisciplinary effort to ensure their maximum exploitations and continued innovations. In this presentation, how these scenarios affect the way we undertake research at the universities and their subsequent implications on the postgraduate activities will be further deliberated.

Professor Dr. Syed Idris bin Syed Hassan

Profile Professor Dr. Syed Idris bin Syed Hassan is a lecturer at School of Electrical System Engineering, UNIMAP since February 2010. Previously he was a Professor at Universiti Sains Malaysia(USM) . He joined USM in 1980 and retired on 22 June 2009. His main research is on propagation especially satellite. Other his interest areas are antenna, microwave engineering and EMC. He has done a lot of collaboration with University of Bradford, University of York, Ministry of Post and Communication Japan (represented by Amateur Radio Industry Business (ARIB) Japan), King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang (KMITL ) Thailand, The Ateneo de Manila University, Institute Technology Bandung and Chiang Mai University, Thailand, Universiti Technology Malaysia and Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia. He has published about 50 journals and 100 proceedings. Being external examiner for bachelor electrical and electronics programme of several universities and institute such as Universiti Tun Hussein Onn, UNIMAS, INTI colleges etc. and also external examiner for about 20 PhD and MSc candidates from UTM, UM, UKM, UPM, UIA and India. He has supervised 7 PhD and 14 MSc students.

Keynote Abstract

Satellite Link Impairment Due To Climatic Factors and Some Mitigation Technique

The satellite link impairments due to rain and other climatic factors are presented. Several empirical and non-empirical rain attenuation prediction models which have been developed based on the measured data obtained from temperate regions are discussed. The studies and the experimental works over 20 years at Universiti Sains Malaysia are reported. Most of the works were done in collaboration with the Ministry of Post and Communication Japan (represented by Amateur Radio Industry Business (ARIB) Japan), King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang (KMITL) Thailand, The Ateneo de Manila University, Institute Technology Bandung and Chiang Mai University, Thailand. Some techniques and proposal for mitigation are also discussed.
