#3 a. – What happened to the Soviet Union during WWII?
Invaded by Germany which caused severe destruction and millions of civilians (non-military citizens) were killed. This was very widespread in the Soviet Union.
3 b. How did the countries of Western and Eastern European countries differ?Western European countries were mainly constitutional monarchies or democracies.
Eastern European countries were mainly Communist dictatorships or puppet governments.
3 c. How did Joseph Stalin rule the Soviet Union?
He used terror and repression to control the people. He ruled with an “iron fist” and was greatly feared. He also controlled industry and agriculture to develop the economy.
4. Why do you think the Soviet Union wanted to control the countries of Eastern Europe?Soviets wanted a line of “buffer states” between themselves and Western Europe and to protect themselves from invasion. They also wanted more countries to be Communist to support that type of government.
