January 2015 LINK: Oh, the weather outside is frightful - The time of year for snow and dreari-
ness is upon us, but how do we get out of it? Submerge yourself into God’s
word and open your Bibles with a warm cup of coffee and blanket. Submit-
ting yourself to the teachings of Jesus could give you the inspiration to do
great things. Be the hands and feet of Jesus and live your life by his word.
In the meantime, enjoy the beautiful canvas painting God created just for
you in your window today.
“Put on love, which links everything together in perfect
harmony.” ~Colossians 3:14
December 2014 LINK: It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The beauty that comes with the
Christmas Season is very apparent in all parts of our daily lives. Stores deco-
rate and play music, lawns publicly display their celebration lights, church at-
tendance goes up, and the feeling of helping others just screams! God’s love
is alive and beating heavily. 2014 may be coming to an end, but 2015 will be
the year that we should shout God’s love for the entire year. Bring on the
outward change in ourselves and others. God is at work and his work is good!

Dear Church Family,
I want to take this opportunity to share with you about our Sermon Series and Bible
Reading Plan for the first three months of 2015. We will be reading together, and Pastor
Josh and I will be preaching from, Paul’s Letters to the Galatians and the Ephesians.
In the course of the thirty years or so which elapsed between his conversion outside
Damascus and his imprisonment in Rome, the apostle Paul traveled widely through the
Roman Empire as an ambassador of Jesus Christ. On his three missionary journeys he
preached the gospel and planted churches in the Roman provinces of Galatia, Asia, Mace-
donia (northern Greece) and Achaia (southern Greece). Moreover, his visits were fol-
lowed by his letters, by which he helped to supervise the churches he founded.
One of these letters, which many believe to be the earliest that Paul wrote (about
A.D. 48 or 49), is the epistle to the Galatians. In the letter he expresses his concern that
the believers are being led astray by false teachers who are attacking the gospel of grace,
claiming that grace alone is not enough for salvation. They are advocating for the inclu-
sion of certain works including following Old Testament law. Paul reminds them that we
cannot save ourselves through righteous actions. Our only hope of salvation is in Jesus
alone.
Originally a Greek colony, Ephesus was now the capital of the Roman province of
Asia and a busy commercial port. It was also the headquarters of the cult of the goddess
Diana (or Artemis) whose temple, after being destroyed in the middle of the fourth century
B.C., had gradually been rebuilt to become one of the seven wonders of the world. The
worship of Diana presented the Ephesian Christians with a difficult task: how to live their
faith in a city whose very atmosphere was permeated by the adoration of a false god.
In his letter to the Ephesian Christians, Paul lays out his blueprint for the church.
He sets forth God’s eternal purpose to create through Jesus Christ a new society which
stands out in bright relief against the darkened background of the old world. In the very
first verse Paul describes his readers as “saints” because they belong to God; they are “the
faithful” or “believers” because they have trusted in Christ; and they have two homes, for
they reside equally “in Ephesus” and “in Christ Jesus.”
As we study these two letters of Paul, we will look at how Christian teaching helps
us understand our Christian responsibilities, how Christian faith is lived out in the Chris-
tian life, and what God has done through
Christ and what we must be and do in
consequence.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Steve

Tis the season for Old-Man-Winter to bless us all with a covering of
snow. As beautiful as it is, it presents safety hazards on our church side-
walks and parking lot. If you would like to volunteer to be on call to help
shovel snow at the church, please sign up in Fellowship Hall, or call the
office to get on the list.

upcoming Mission Trip to Mexico. They are willing to rake leaves, do
housework, babysit, etc. Can you help out some of these teens?

An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up…” Matthew 2:13
Christmas and all the chaos are over, and it is very tempting to just sit back, digest the
season, and rest from giving for a while. There are credit card bills to pay, trees to take down,
and houses to clean, and that seems enough for January.
The thing about babies, though, is that they continue to need all sorts of care, and we have
just celebrated the birth of a baby! Joseph was called to flee with Mary and the infant Jesus to
save him from Herod’s dangerous fear. Mary needed to feed him, change him, and rock him to
sleep as they traveled. Seasons change, but the
need for love continues.
And that’s what giving springs from –
LOVE. Those who care for children continue to
give to them in season and out because they love
them. Consider the children of our church and our
Valley; what kind of love do they call forth from
you today? How can we continue our Christmas
love of children all through the new year?
Love in Christ,
Valerie Johnson (Your Stewardship Chairperson)
