FREIGHTERS IN GREENPORT, Circa mid-1950’sThis photo and the one on page 3 are courtesy of the Herzog Collection. We are told they carried seed potatoes and possibly turnips.

In this issue...... we share some “Out of the Attic” pictures — photos of interest butnot connected to any story. We are also short on correct info on several pictures and hope some readers will send us feedback with more info! Enjoy!

In 1944, hurricanes were not yet given names such as “Sandy” or “Donna”, however storms at that time were called for the places they hit first, such as the 1944 “Cuba/Florida” hurricane. That fury eventually made its way to the North Fork, more as a tropical storm. Killing 318 people, this hurricane’s damage was estimated at 10 million dollars (at today’s value, $40.6 billion). There is no telling what the monetary cost was to rescue the four cottages that washed into Little Pond from the sound shore near Horton Lane in Southold in 1944, but rescued they were. Three of the floating bungalows belonged to local veterinarian Dr. S. Bennedict Fischer. Dr. Fischer, together with his son Bobby and friends Ellis Terry and Lou Baker, secured a line to each structure. With the help of their John Deere tractor they managed to haul all four buildings onto large oak skids and back to their original locations.

In 1953 the US Weather Bureau began the practice of naming hurricanes after the feminine gender. In 1954 “Carol” pummeled the east coast and once again the cottages were afloat. The Fischer family decided to rescue only 2. The DeFriest family, having recently purchased property on Horton Lane from Clem Booth, retrieved the other two. Photo courtesy of Peg (Fischer) Murphy. AN ARTISTIC POSTCARD OF THE SIDE VIEW OF HORTON POINT LIGHTHOUSE IN SOUTHOLD The ever-changing landscape around the lighthouse is evident in this circa 1890 photo. The trees had been cleared over time for their BTU value. The porch side faces the Long Island Sound. The three out-buildings include the carriage house, outhouse and oil shed (which held fuel for the light). The road to the light house that was from the old North Road had been recently cut, costing several local farmers and neighbors $18.00 per family. A visit to Horton Point Lighthouse today shows a dramatic regrowth of trees. Now owned by the Southold Park District, the eight acres of parkland boasts a shaded picnic area and a nature trail walk through the woods with a beautiful view of the Sound from the cliff.

Above photos show views of the front and back of the building.
