Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Tech and the 2021 Livestock Merchandising class, we welcome you to our 27th Annual Hokie Harvest Sale! Chad and I are very thankful to our customers, students, alumni, and supporters who have been extremely important to us along the way. It is hard to imagine that after 27 years this merchandising course has weathered the test of time and continues to be a very relevant course in the departmental curriculum. Nearly 1,850 Virginia Tech students from various majors and colleges have enrolled in this course and have later become industry leaders and prominent livestock producers. The Hokie Harvest is more than just a beef cattle or horse sale; it’s an exciting, fun-filled day with quality livestock, outstanding students, supporting alumni, great fellowship, and delicious food. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to witness our future industry leaders in action!
The Hokie Harvest Sale has developed a significant reputation for selling high quality, university-owned livestock and is unique to the university and the Commonwealth of Virginia because it has been organized and managed by students in an experiential learning environment. Both two- and four-year students have gained “hands-on” experience in sale management, budgeting, advertising, cataloging, clerking, and livestock photography. Students have worked extremely hard in the planning and preparation of this year’s production sale, which includes a live auction of 77 head of registered and commercial beef cattle and six quality horses being sold exclusively through an online auction at https://horsesales.cals.vt.edu. Additional updates on all sale horses can be found at https://www.facebook.com/VirginiaTechEquine/
Our commitment to our customers has always been to provide cattle that are profitable in a variety of situations. The beef cattle program strives to raise the most predictable genetics available and will feature both purebred and commercial beef cattle. Breeders of purebred Hereford, Simmental, Charolais, and Angus cattle will be able to select AI-sired progeny from a cross-section of the VT Beef Cattle herd. Some of our very best females and bulls have been hand-picked stemming from elite donors that combine curve-bending EPDs, breed-changing genetics, and acceptable phenotype. Mature cows with proven production records and promising herd sires from predictable cow families will be sold. All 10 spring-born calves will sell separately from their dams. A strong set of pregnant commercial cows and heifers of SimAngus origin will also be offered. Cowbuyer LLC will again provide online bidding for the cattle sale if you feel more comfortable with that format. If so, you must register at www.cowbuyer.com at least one hour before the sale in order to watch/bid online in real-time. Complimenting this service, video is available on all sale cattle which can be accessed at https://www.apsc.vt.edu/facilities0/beef-center.html. Sale cattle will be on display throughout the week of the sale but will not be brought into the sale ring which is different from previous years.
Our equine program is selling an excellent offering of six young horses ... three geldings and three open mares. Please join us as we showcase these well-bred horses from 12-6 PM on sale day. The online auction will be open for bidding on October 1st and will close promptly at 6:00 PM on October 29th.
As we all know, the past 18 months have been challenging in so many ways. Virginia Tech is prepared for a fully in-person Fall 2021 Semester. Of course, we will base our sale plans on the latest public health guidance and trends informed by still emerging data and science. As we have throughout the pandemic, we will build flexibility into our sale plans and communicate any updates through our websites and social media in a timely and transparent manner.
The Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences takes great pride in our university, our livestock, and especially our students. We encourage you to ‘Come and Experience the Harvest’ on Friday, October 29th and get to know this great group of future industry leaders. Funds generated from the Hokie Harvest will continue to provide funding critical to the survival of departmental programs. Many thanks to all of you for your past support and interest in our beef cattle and equine teaching programs. We are committed to making you a satisfied customer and are here to assist you in any way we can.
Sincerely,
Dr. Dan Eversole

Dear friends, supporters, and fellow Hokies,
As the 2021 Livestock Merchandising Class at Virginia Tech, we are honored and pleased to present to you the 27th Annual Hokie Harvest Sale Catalog. After a year of virtual socialization and isolation, we are excited to invite you to our in-person sale on October 29th, 2021, at 6:30 P.M. at our very own Alphin-Stuart Livestock Arena located on Plantation Road in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Now in its 27th year, this annual auction continues to be a joint effort among all the students enrolled in the Livestock Merchandising Class. Throughout this class we have had an abundant amount of amazing guest lecturers who have thoroughly prepared us for planning and overseeing the sale. Organizing the Hokie Harvest Sale teaches each member of the class valuable skills on how to manage and coordinate a successful production sale, while providing high quality, hand-picked livestock to the public. This year’s auction will include an amazing selection of 77 beef cattle including 10 purebred spring pair splits, 6 fall-calving purebred cows, 6 spring-calving commercial heifers, 6 fall-calving commercial cows, 7 spring-calving commercial cows, and 20 breeding-age bulls. Our hand-picked selection of cattle include Angus, Charolais, Simmental, and Hereford breeds.
The Hokie Harvest Sale is also fortunate to offer 6 fantastic youngstock, 3 mares and 3 geldings, all of whom were born and raised at our Smithfield Equine Barn to our online auction. We have a diverse group of horses ranging from weanlings to 3-year-olds, including an Irish Sporthorse, a JC registered gelding, and a few quality Quarter Horses. The online auction of these amazing horses will open on October 1st, and close at 6 p.m. on October 29th, following the live viewing of the sales horses from 12-6 P.M. in the Alphin-Stuart Livestock Arena on sale day. All proceeds from the Hokie Harvest Sale will directly impact the Department of Animal & Poultry Sciences and its programs to benefit the Virginia Tech students, research efforts, and extension education.
We appreciate your invaluable support and invite you to attend a complimentary barbeque dinner served prior to sale time in the Alphin-Stuart Arena beginning at 4:30 P.M. up until sale time. Join us in fellowship while enjoying some delicious food. Thank you for your continued support and interest in helping us further our education as we serve you. “Come Experience the Harvest” with us on October 29th at the 27th Annual Hokie Harvest Sale.
