Former dt Collector rapped on water connection to individualCHENNAI, JUNE 30 (PTI)

The Madras High Court has rapped a former district Collector of Karur for providing water connection to a private individual for her rosewood farm.

"To say the least, the district Collector has catered to the luxury of the fourth respondent when the villagers are reeling under water shortage," a division bench of Justices T S Sivagnanam and Justice S Ananthi said recently.

The bench also wondered at the way in which the IAS offi cial fi led the counter affi davit/status report and the manner in which she had defended the litigation. Very often, the government counsels will take repeated adjournments before the courts for purpose

of fi ling counter- affi davit. In this case, the offi cial had taken much attention and she had promptly fi led the status report. "Thus, we are of the clear view that the impugned order is arbitrary, unreasonable, a clear abuse and misuse of power vested with the authority, totally devoid of jurisdiction and liable to be set aside," the bench said. The bench was allowing a PIL petition from the Village Drinking Water and Health Society,

by its treasurer P Mani, of Coodalore East Panchayat in Karur district seeking to quash as illegal, arbitrary and without jurisdiction, an order dated November 18, 2020 of the then Collector providing water connection to the individual. Rejecting the argument of the Collector, the judges said that the rosewood tree farm developed by Shanthi by planting 11,000 trees would not fall within the ambit of agricultural purpose.

"Thus, we are of the clear view that the impugned order is arbitrary, unreasonable, a

clear abuse and misuse of power vested with the authority, totally devoid of jurisdicti on and liable

to be set aside," the bench said.

Former Pondy CM urges govt to get necessaryinfrastructure ready to face anticipated Covid third wavePUDUCHERRY, JUNE 30 (PTI)

Former Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Tuesday urged the N Rangasamy-led NDA government here to ensure all the necessary medical infrastructure facilities including beds for children were got ready much in advance to face an anticipated third wave of coronavirus.

The government should not remain lethargic and scramble for medical facilities when the expected third wave of coronavirus breaks out, he said in his virtual press meet.

He said the hospitals run by the Puducherry government, private medical colleges and the Centrally administered JIPMER should take steps without delay to put in place the beds needed for children particularly in

the context of a possible third wave. "Children are expected to be the target of the third wave of coronavirus and hence nothing should be left wanting on the part of the hospitals," he added.

Narayanasamy also called upon the new Ministry to ensure that each of the more than 1,700 families which have lost their kith and kin due to Covid during the fi rst and second waves was provided succour of Rs 1 lakh.

"This relief was promised by the government he had headed in the recent past," he

said and alleged that the then Lt Governor Kiran Bedi stood in the way of implementing the scheme and hence it could not see the light of the day.

The senior Congress leader said that there was delay in formation of the new Ministry under the leadership of N Rangasamy (AINRC) and even after that there was now a delay in allocation of portfolios.

"This delay would only cause dislocation of administrative work as already the administration had come to a standstill in Puducherry," he said.

Rise in petrol price hit people muchERODE, JUNE 30

Petrol and diesel prices are set by oil companies based on the value of the Indian rupee against the value of US dollar in the international market. Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged for a few months after the curfew was imposed in March last year. In this situation, after the end of the 5 state assembly elections, petrol and diesel prices started rising again. In various states in India, petrol has crossed the price of Rs 100 per liter.

In various districts in Tamil Nadu, a liter of petrol costs Rs.100. Motorists have been suffering as petrol and diesel prices have continued to rise.

Petrol and diesel prices in Erode district have also been on the rise for the past few days. Petrol prices in particular continue to rise.

Cong plea to add more pride to Erode town

ERODE JUNE 30 Congress Minorities

wing district president J Suresh, vice president KN Basha and general secretary MM Harshad submitted a petition to Erode East Congress MLA Thirumagan Evara pleading to construct an arch in memory of Silver Jubilee Celebration of Independence at the entrance of Erode Central Bus Stand. They said that in memory of such celebration, the then Erode municipal council led by Congress leader Rajappa

adopted a resolution on August 11, 1972 to name the name of the bus stand as Silver Jubilee Independence Day Bus Stand and the government also accepted it and a name board was kept in that regard. Signifi cantly, Erode municipality alone kept such a board in the state and chose such a title to take part in the celebration at that time. After the municipality was upgraded into Municipal Corporation by late CM M Karunanidhi on January 1, 2008, some development

works were done in the bus stand and the board was removed. Then, Basha wrote many letters to the CMs, Local Administration MInisters, Collectors, Mayors and Corporation offi cials to keep the board again. Then, an arch with the name was built at the exit point of the bus stand at a cost of Rs 6.80 lakh and declared open on September 22, 2013. As per the norm, the arch should be existed at the entry point of buses in Mettur road. After nearly, 40 years gap, a Congress MLA was elected from Erode now.

So, to add more glory to the silver jubilee celebration and to the town, the birth place of your grand father and freedom fi ghter Periyar EVR, another arch with the title be built at the entrance of the bus stand by using his MLA fund or obtaining special fund from the government, they demanded. It would help remind the ancient history of the nation to our posterity, they hoped.

4 WEDNESDAY 30 JUNE 2021 COIMBATORE

A general curfew was declared in March in the northern states this year. In Tamil Nadu, the power looms operated without

a public shutdown. This caused stagnation as the clothes could not be sent to the North Indian states. The price also fell. The clothes have been stagnant for 2 months now as the curfew is in force in the northern states. Production in Tamil Nadu has come to a complete halt and even 30 percent of the fabrics have not been produced for 2 months.Even if power loom production resumes, only half of the workers will be employed. Therefore the Central & State Governments have to issue joint announcements to start full production. The Central and State Governments should provide an interest-free loan of Rs. 15,000 to small scale weavers. Only then, they can buy yarn bundles and restart their businesses.Their demand is justifi ed. How many days can the weaving units be kept closed without work? Where would the weavers go for daily food and other livelihoods if there was no industry? Central and state governments should be aware of their plight and take immediate action.

Central and state governments must

take action
