While the commercial establish- ments and educational institutions have contributed to the develop- ment of this area, these have also resulted in high traffic snarls. Add- ing to the existing chaos, is an abandoned car parked under the bridge near the Govern- ment Museum, with many alleging that the vehicle has been blocking the stretch. According to a shopkeeper, N Asamuddin, ‘This car has been left here for a long time. School buses and share autos find it difficult to move smoothly due to this. If the vehicle is removed, space will be cleared to an extent’. Apart from this, pedestrians also complain about foul smell emanating from under the bridge. ‘It is difficult to walk on the road due to the stench that arises from the waste dumped on the roadside’, says home-maker Anantha Bala. It is also alleged that few miscre- ants defecate in the open. Rohini, a student states, ‘I take a share auto to go to my col- lege through this road. It is nauseating to cross this stretch’. Residents allege that re- peated complaints have been made to the authorities, but in vain. ‘The Corporation must see into these issues. The traffic must be regulated and the area has to be sanitised. If not, serious health con- cerns may arise,’ Rohini adds. -NT Bureau Water stagnation at Krishna river water canal cleared by officials T he two-year-long battle of Iyyappanthangal residents has finally paid dividends as authorities have taken measures to clear the stagnat water at the Krish- na river water canal. Residents of Iyyappanthangal have time and again mentioned that the stagnat water is the major contribu- tor to the ever-present health issues as it enables mosquito breeding on a large-scale. With dengue spread- ing all over the State, authorities had made it a point that no open place should have stagnant water, other than fresh water bodies. So, inevitably, they were forced to solve the issue at Iyyappanthangal that had been left unsolved for years. Also pressing on their shoulders were the fact that many had been affected by dengue in the neigh- bourhood, most of them pointing to the canal as the reason for their mis- ery. On 25 October, officials filled the canal with construction debris to prevent water from stagnating in that region. Since the canal ac- tually transports water beneath the surface through pipes, the measure had been taken. Residents finally felt relieved as the long-pending problem has finally been solved. Citizen Senthil, a social activist who has been active about the is- sue for two years, said, ‘I spoke with the Metrowater authorities and PWD and both played the blam- ing game all this time. Finally, the dengue measures taken by the State govern- ment has solved the issue. The former president of Iyyap- pan- thangal Panchayat met me and told us that rubbish had been arranged to fill the canal. Thankfully, there was no delay in the plan.’ He also said some were worried if the op- position parties might interfere and oppose while filling rubbish in metro water land tomorrow. ‘Post this, the land can be used by people as a walking track. That would also prevent any encroach- ment that might crop up. One can never eliminate the possibility of encroachments,’ said another resi- dent, Varun. Now that the prob- lem is over, residents want authorities to make use of the 30 feet wide land for good purposes. -NT Bureau PORUR PORUR PANTHEON ROAD PLAGUED WITH PROBLEMS Despite the government advising people to avoid plastics, sale of such items soar at Mariyamman Koil Street at Mugalivakkam.
