Beau-regard, who had beenat the Montgomery[Ala.] Humane Societymost of his first year, was very shy. He hadbeen rescued from anabusive home, and sofar, no one hadadopted him.
When the shel-ter spotlighted him asPet of the Month onits Petfinder website, his luck changed.
Amy Johnsonof Birmingham, Ala.,had always had pets, but when she went tocollege, balancing
work, school andother activities madehaving a dog seemunfeasible. Then, inher sophomore year, her roommateadopted an AustralianShepherd puppy,Pesto.
“I immediatelyfell in love withher,” Johnsonsays, “butknew I wanteda fur-baby ofmy very own.”She beganwatching forthat specialone onPetfinder.
“When I got tothe shelter and askedfor Beauregard byname, the staff lit up,“she says. “They wereso excited that we hadcome to meet him.”
They led himout, and as herounded the corner,Johnson began to cry.“He was so muchmore beautiful thanthe pictures I’d seenonline.” She could tellhe was nervous, buthe “kept his chin uplike a brave little sol-dier,” she recalls.
He crawled inher lap, pressed hishead against her andbegan to whimper andwag his tail. Shehugged him, and theconnection was made.
She changedhis name to Cooper.“It took him some timeto adjust to life in areal home,” she says,“but we were very pa-tient and made sure tohelp build his confi-dence.”
Cooper istwelve now and lovesto snuggle and givedrive-by licks – kissesto show he cherishesJohnson as much asshe cher-ishes him.

WEARE DEALING!

Although con-sumers say they are atleast somewhat know-ledgeable about nutrition.
"While there issome disparity betweenperceived nutrient ade-quacy and actual nutri-ent intake, it is notablethat consumers recog-nize the benefits theirfood can offer," saysSarah Romotsky, regis-tered dietitian and asso-ciate director of health
and wellness at the IFICFoundation.
"Indeed, health-promoting foods andfood components, likeblueberries, yogurt, fish, milk and fortified breadsand breakfast cereals, play an important role inmeeting nutrient needsand improving overallhealth."
According to afoods consumer survey, however, the majority ofrespondents (almost 70%) believe they fall short
of meeting "all or nearlyall" of their nutritionalneeds.
What's more, acomparison of the sur-vey's findings and Na-
tional Health and Nutri-
tion Examination Surveydata shows gaps be-tween how many believetheir intakes are ade-quate versus recom-mended daily intakes or
nutrient intake rec-ommendations.For nutrients suchas vitamin D,potassium andfiber, the discrep-ancy between per-ception and realityis glaring.
"Breads, riceand cereals, which are
often fortified with B Vita-mins, may be helpingconsumers meet their Bvitamin needs, withoutthe consumer realizingthe added value," saysRomotsky.
However, thereare still gaps in knowl-edge and consumption ofa variety of other benefi-cial components, such asomega-3 fatty acids, lutein, flavonoids andzeaxanthin.
The good news, though, according to the
survey, is that consumerinterest in learning more about foods with benefitsbeyond basic nutrition re-mains high. Almost ninein 10 Americans say theyare interested in learningmore about foods thathave health benefits be-yond basic nutrition, butcited barriers such asprice.
