Next year, as Japan hosts the Olympics, the great nation will look
to revive its once prevalent traditional architecture style. Japanese
architect Kengo Kuma has designed “Over the hump”, the largest
wooden roof stadium for Olympic using traditional techniques.
This is just one of the sustainable activities in Japan’s long list
of planned measures for a better tomorrow. India, the world’s
largest democracy, will evolve through its self-discovery into
neo-agile-determination, love and positivity amid anxiety over
sleeplessness, human divide and social bias.
By 2020, India will have 410 million millennials spending a whopping
USD 330 billion annually. Even rural India will see a huge increase in
spending. On the flip side, research shows that there is a huge
increase in mental disorders and suicide rates in the country. A lot of
this is owing to stress, sleepless nights, technology addiction and so
forth. In fact, India is the second most sleep-deprived country in the
world. That’s why we need to make well-being with ‘good sleep’, the
theme and goal for 2020-21.
This 20-21 Nippon Color Vision mega tendency is the first ever
zonally categorized home color forecast in India for better focus
and agility of themes and color preferences in each zone. The
Forecaster and Nippon Paint team believes that every zone in India
has its distinct mindset and color preference which indeed needs
to be celebrated as uniqueness and identity. Hence, the forecast
is elaborately divided into ‘North Zone’ and ‘South Zone’. We also
have a well-segmented category called ‘YOUth’ which is specially
developed for the millennials and Gen Z of India.
Nippon Paint Color Vision forecast is developed by Dr. Kaustav
SenGupta and his team from NIFT, Chennai. Dr. SenGupta an
Indologist, Futurist, Color Analyst and academician holds
a Doctorate degree in Color Psychology with more than 20 years
of experience in color forecasting, color psychology and brand
strategies based on colors of India. With his copyright protected
color-image-emotion model and color-systems (along with various
internationally practiced tools) the mega mindsets and color stories
were mapped for this forecast. The team must thank all the
influencers, color experts, designers, architects, creative, volunteers
and specialists from Nippon Paint team for sharing their invaluable
insights to sculpt this forecast. This forecast is dedicated to all the
architects, interior designers, product designers, creative individuals,
academicians and anybody who would like to understand the colors
that suit our mindset and homes.
Let’s celebrate the plurality and enjoy the BLOOM.
A COLORFUL, SUSTAINABLE FUTURENippon Paint is a pioneer in the paint industry, with innovative products and sustainable work practices. What sets
the company apart is the underlying desire to subscribe to a better way of doing things. Ultimately, the goal is to
make life better for everyone.
This year, we are doing it through stories and themes involving color. By making these themes a part of everyday life,
Nippon Paint aims to inspire people to shed their inhibitions, cut ties with whatever is holding them back and live to
their fullest potential.

ACTIVITIES AND EVENTSAs Paul Klee rightly stated “Color is the place where our
brain and the universe meet”. The subconscious nature
of color allows it to impact the deeper essence of our
lives. However, multiple researchers prove that color
preferences and color emotions are culture specific
and not universal. In a pluralist country like India, color
psychology is also wide and varied depending on the
cultural synthesis, climate, ethnography, origin,
demography and socio-political scenarios. Keeping
the very essence of this pluralistic and culturally vibrant
country, Nippon Paint color forecasting process started
in March 2018 through 6 focus group discussions, round
tables and color-mapping workshops with 114
participants (influencers, industry experts, peer leaders,
social catalysts and color-thinkers) from across India.
The participants were from varied industries (Home,
Fashion, Automobile, Industrial Design, Lifestyle
Products, Furniture, Media, Event Planning, Hospitality,
Visual Communication, Craft and Education).
We also brought influential bloggers and vloggers,
social media influencers, bikers, visual artists and
musicians to participate.
The workshops were guided with the
color-image-emotion association model and
Dr. SenGupta’s copyright system of Color-consciousness.
All the workshops were coordinated, curated and
anchored by Dr. SenGupta (color expert, futurist,
youth insights expert, color system developer with
more than 2 decades of experience) and his able team
in the presence of Nippon Paint’s core team. Over a year,
Dr. SenGupta and a team of 34 visual analysts and
designers from NIFT worked relentlessly to map the key
mega mind-sets to develop the first ‘impressions’ for the
mega-color direction. The same was further refined
and re-aligned to emerge as the first ever zonal color
direction of India.
In Nippon Paint Color Vision 20-21, North and South
Zones exhibit 4 themes or color stories each. The YOUth
section is absolutely unique, as before this, there was
no such eort taken in India to present colors to Gen Z
and Millennials. For this section, curated participants
across domains and interests joined the focus group.
This forecast presents 7 color stories pertaining to
youth. Our forecast is explorative in nature and well
segmented so that designers, architects, design
students and design enthusiasts can refer to the stories
for their color explorations and design.

Color is all about life; and vice versa. At Nippon Paint, we are happy to embark on a new journey
- Color Vision - where we identify themes that govern our lives, and we associate a palette of colors
with them. This will be a key driver in enhancing lifestyles and quality of life across all homes, industries,
o¤ce spaces, etc. We are working with Dr. Kaustav, a professor in NIFT, and an expert in the field of color
forecasting and color vision. Deep study and research have revealed that the themes we have chosen have
deep cultural and social relevance.
We are such a diverse and colorful society and country. With so many hues and shades thrown in our day
to day lives! Hence an array of colors and themes will only do justice to the mosaic that is India.
Mahesh S. Anand, President - Nippon Paint India, Decoratives
We do not believe that picking just one color as a theme for the year ahead does justice to the
multi-dimensional lives we all lead. Which is why we have zeroed in on a few significant themes and color
swatches to complement those themes. This will be extremely useful for several industries like architecture,
design, interior planning etc. When your client loves the theme of 'sleep' for instance, Nippon Paint oers
a swatch that will complement that theme.
Mark Titus, Director, Marketing - Nippon Paint India, Decoratives
Colors are omnipresent in our daily lives and indeed a fundamental aspect of human perception.
Individual human cognition, experience and behaviour as social swarm influence the color tendency.
Nippon Color Vision is the first ever such mega forecast in Indian subcontinent that addresses the zonal mind
sets and has been developed using the various copyright protected systems and methods. Process of
mapping the color tendency became easier by using large-scale color fan-decks of Nippon Paint. Must thank
all the participants, interns, NIFT and Nippon Paint team for the support. We sincerely hope that this open
source color forecast will be widely used by architects, interior designers, product designers, visual artists,
students etc. for their inspiration and reference.

We live in a time when being ‘followed’ and ‘tracked’ are the metrics by which social supremacy is judged. Unfortunately, this has led to privacy being relegatedto the bottom of the table. The best way to ‘hide’ from being trackedis to escape ‘beyond reach’ - to a place where ‘human network’is not available.
