An Environment of ExcellenceBecause of the tremendous community support for Monadnock Community Hospital’s recent building campaign, the Hospital celebrated the opening of the Sarah Hogate Bacon Emergency Services Department in early Winter 2011. This expansion was funded in part by the $10 million capital campaign completed in 2010. The new space more than doubles the size of the ED, up from 3,500 to 8,000 square feet. With 13,000 visits annually, the ED is one of the busiest departments in the Hospital.

The expanded space provides patients a greater level of privacy with nine rooms and eleven beds. Each room is “universal” — able to serve patients regardless of illness or trauma. Two of the new rooms are reached directly by an ambulance-only entrance. Walk-in patients use a separate entrance, and can be triaged without waiting to register.

The “U” shape of the new ED improves sight lines for nurses to view all patients. There is even a new, separate decontamination area to handle people affected by biohazards or industrial contaminants.

“With the community need growing, we expect an increase to 14,000 or more patients annually,” says Dr. Craig Lauer, Emergency Department Medical Director. “We are ready and will be able to offer the very best in professional emergency care.”

Surgery TransformedThe opening this spring of MCH’s new Surgical Services Department represents the final phase of the Hospital’s two-year building and campus expansion program. The addition more than doubles the size of the department with the addition of two new larger operating rooms adjacent to the existing three operating rooms, and endoscopy suite, and a new Central Supply Department. Additionally, the pre-op area will have 10 new private rooms with televisions and six new state-of-the-art recovery room bays.

With over 15 surgeons performing over 3,000 surgeries each year, this new advanced surgical department offers a wide range of surgical procedures, from out-patient surgery to more complex surgical procedures requiring hospitalization. The advanced operating rooms provide the technology needed to perform a wide variety of procedures using the Harmony IQ™ integration system. Joint replacement surgeries are performed in the larger operating theaters using the latest surgical equipment needed to complete these complex procedures.

The Healing and the Arts Committee at Monadnock Community

Hospital has a goal of creating an environment of healing

through art. Studies have shown that soothing, calming and

beautiful pieces of art have a distinctly positive effect on how

quickly people heal. The Maternity Unit has a rotating gallery of

artists that provides laboring Moms something soothing to look

at as they walk the halls. The Wellness Center is home to many

creative initiatives. Through art we are forming a stronger connection

to our local community as we are fortunate to have many talented artists in

the Monadnock Region. At MCH we have the opportunity to provide an outlet

for their work, while providing a beautiful environment for patients and

visitors alike.

$9.2 Million in Community BenefitsMonadnock Healthy Teeth to Toes (MHTTT), a public health program at Monadnock Community Hospital, focuses on dental hygiene and care, nutrition, and daily physical activity for children ages kindergarten to third grade.

The MHTTT Healthy Me Afterschool Club was successfully implemented at Antrim Elementary School with 14 very enthusiastic first and third grade students! Over a span of six weeks the children danced and moved to inclusive and fun games; tasted new and colorful food groups; and introduced their parents to creative and fun ways to make daily healthy choices.

Our school-based program has been in 17 schools—14 elementary schools and 3 preschools, teaching over 1,800 children about the important relationship between healthy teeth and healthy bodies. For those families without dental or health insurance, MHTTT is actively assisting with enrollment in the financial grant program at Monadnock Community Hospital and New Hampshire Healthy Kids. Both programs offer significant financial support for uninsured children.
