In groups you will be writing and publishing an online newspaper.

The newspaper will be covering stories and events that have taken place in the worlds of the novels you have been reading.

Each member of the group is to contribute two articles about events from the book they have chosen.

THE WORLDS WITHIN BOOKS

After reading a novel you will write two newspaper articles that are inspired by the novel.

These could be an articles on important events that have taken place in your novel.

Choose two templates from the Newspaper Template Keynote.

Combine your articles with the rest of your group. Give your group’s newspaper a name.

STRUCTURE

The first paragraph of a newspaper article is called the lead.

The lead should summarize the main facts of the article.Explain the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, and why) and how.

The first paragraph should also contain a hook, something that grabs the reader's attention and makes the reader want to read the rest of the article.

1. LEAD PARAGRAPH

The nut graph is the paragraph that contains the core information about the story and tells the reader why the story

is important.

The nut paragraph explains why it is important to know about this event.

The nut paragraph sums up the story in a nutshell and tells us why it is

important.

2. NUT PARAGRAPH

The remainder of the article should contain at least two supporting paragraphs that go into more detail about the topic, often including

quotes and interesting facts.

The less important information should appear later in the article, since the article may be cropped (shortened) by the editor (the

person who puts the newspaper together) to make the article fit on the newspaper page.

3. BODY PARAGRAPHS

• The reporter's opinions should not appear in the article - only the facts.

• Use clear and simple language. • Keep the article short and to the point. • Use active verbs (for example: Man bites dog) and not

passive verbs (for example: Dog bitten by man). • Each picture, graph or illustration should have a caption

describing or explaining it.

Put all of your articles together into one keynote presentation. Post the final newspaper onto your blog and Tweet a link. Make sure your groups newspaper has a name.
