Professor Anthony Burkitt holdsthe Chair of Bio-Signals and Bio-Systemsin the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne and is the Director of Bionic Vision Australia. His research is in
neuro-engineering and he has worked in cochlear implant speech processing and computational auditory neuroscience for over adecade. Professor Burkitt has published papers on physiological neural processing mechanisms associated with speech that involvespecialised networks within the auditory brainstem. This research ledto his development of new cochlear implant speech processingstrategies that have been patented and are undergoing pilot clinicaltrials. His recent research has involved extending these conceptsfrom the auditory system to the visual system in order to develop visual stimulation paradigms for retinal implants.
Professor Burkitt’s research in neural modelling of biological systemshas impacted on our understanding of how information is encoded, transmitted and decoded within neural systems. He has worked onunderstanding the neural basis of epileptic seizures and developingmethods for detecting and predicting seizures. He is also involved inresearch to use electrical stimulation for epileptic seizure abatement.

WFNR - The Michael P Barnes Lecture
2012 Michael P Barnes Lecturer - Professor Randolph Nudo
The Michael P Barnes lecture was established in recognition of the visionary leadership and dedication of the foundingPresident of the World Federation for Neurorehabilitation(WFNR). This special lectureship takes place at each WorldCongress. The inaugural lecture was held during the 6th World Congress for Neurorehabilitation in Vienna in 2010.
AFRM - The Norington Lecture
2012 Norington Lecturer - Dr Tessa Hart
This lecture is named in memory of Bradney Norington, firstPresident of the Australian College of Rehabilitation Medicine. It is presented by an Allied Health professional, should outlinerecent progress in rehabilitation research and was first presented in Cairns during 2006.
During his medical studies at Sydney University Bradney Norington developed acute poliomyelitis which left him withextensive severe residual paralysis and a wheelchair-based life. However after graduating in 1954 he worked and studied inPhysical Medicine and Rehabilitation at several eminent UK Facilities and was the first Australian to achieve the UKDiploma of Physical Medicine in 1957. Back in Australia heworked as a Rehabilitation Medicine Consultant at Mt WilgaRehabilitation Centre, Repatriation and General Hospital, Concord and at Prince of Wales and Prince Henry Hospitals.
He was a member of the Committee that established the Australian College of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) and became Chairman and Foundation President in 1978. He wasawarded a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 1979, and NSW Father of the Year in 1981. Dr Norington achieved personally and professionally far more than the vast majorityof his able-bodied peers.

AFRM - The George Burniston Oration
2012 George Burniston Lecturer - Professor Bruce Dobkin
In memory of the late George Burniston the AFRM holds an annualoration to honour his contribution to the discipline of RehabilitationMedicine and to the development of specialist rehabilitation services in Australia and New Zealand. The first oration was presented in Adelaide in 1994.
George Garrett Burniston was born in 1914, and graduated in Medicine from the University of Sydney in 1939. He served with theRAAF and the RAF during the Second World War, rising to the rankof Wing Commander in 1946 and Group Captain in the RAAF Reserve during 1948. He established and commanded the No 2RAAF Medical Rehabilitation Unit in Jervis Bay in 1944.
He had a distinguished career in practical and academic rehabilitation and can be named one of the truly great pioneers ofrehabilitation medicine in this country. He served innumerablehospitals as consultant and adviser, and many government agenciesboth national and international. For his services in the field of rehabilitation of the handicapped, he was awarded an OBE in 1969and CMG in 1972, attesting to the esteem that George attracted byhis unceasing efforts on behalf of the medical discipline of rehabilitation, and on behalf of the patients who need the servicesof specialists in rehabilitation. He died in 1992 at the age of 77.
