Reality TV Overload By: Susana Alvarez, Hawk Gymtanlaundry, grenade, and meatball power. You might recognize these phrases because everyone knows about the famous Jersey Shore. Reality TV shows seem to be abundant these days. Everyone seems to want to know about the Kardashians, Snookie, and all the Teen Moms. On almost every channel there is at least one or two reality TV shows. What is it that attracts people to dramatic people yelling and Highting? Ariana and Tallis, two students from DSMS, seem to think that people are attracted to excitement, which is mostly drama in reality TV shows. Reality TV stars can be very admirable. For example, Jeannette Melendez watches America’s Next Top Model and thinks some girls there can be looked up to. “It’s pretty amazing how the girls can overcome all their obstacles. Even with all the drama in the house or with all the girls going after them, they manage to concentrate on their task,” said Jeannette Melendez. Some reality stars on the other hand can be annoying. “Kim Kardashian is so annoying,” says Alexis Rubio. “She’s fake and she just wants attention.” Some people can be amusing to look at because of all the weird things they do. Ariana said, “It’s funny how random and funny Snookie from Jersey Shore is.” There is also the issue of whether the reality TV shows are real or not. Some people think they are real and some people think they are fake. If you were to ask the stars or the creators they would probably say that everything is real. “I don’t think they give them a script or anything to do,” explains Ariana. “But I do think that they try to exaggerate themselves and the things they do.” “I think everything they do is fake. They’re all fake,” adds Tallis. On the other hand, some people think the things that go on the shows are real. “The Bad Girls Club,” says Humberto Vega, “Seems very real. They actually show people Highting and I don’t think they can fake that.” With all the reality TV shows everywhere, does it affect people’s life somehow? Ariana says that it can affect people and how they act. “Especially little kids. With all the reality TV they might want to start acting like immature people who can drink and party all night,” she says. “There’s too many reality shows,” says Tallis. “People are going to end up getting tired of these people and these shows.” “Even though there’s a lot of shows,” explains Jeannette, “People like drama so I think these kinds of shows are going to keep on going for a long time.” Teenagers Talk Dub Step By: Ariel Belcher, Roadrunner Sophia and Courtney’s ecstatic hearts start pumping to the sound of the intense electronic sound. While Morgan turns the other cheek when the static racket reaches her ears. Dub step is repetitive electronic music a.k.a. electronic dance music, EDM. “I love dub step. It’s heart pumping and crazy. Its awesome!” Sophia Koval said when I asked her opinions on the subject. “Its all emotions in one big bundle. It sounds like a mixture of voices, computer sounds, and screaming.” I asked Sophia Koval if she thinks dub step sensation, Skrillex, falls under the correct genre. “Well, of course I think Skrillex is dub step. Do you think that a guy who looks like that isn’t into some crazy kind of music? Skrillex is my favorite dub step artist, because he knows exactly what music needs, the sounds, the emotions.” Morgan refers to dub step as future music. “Future Music isn’t like beat boxing. Beat boxing is better,” Morgan said when asked if beat boxing and dub step have any similarities. “Future Music is just annoying noise. It’s too confusing,” said Morgan. “Dub step is interesting because if you listen to it carefully, you hear weird sounds and voices,” Sophia Koval said. “Dub step sounds really cool,” Courtney Belcher said when I asked her if she thinks dub step is interesting. Extreme Fads at Desert Sands By: Clinton Harrington, Coyote At Desert Sands Middle School there are a lot of fads like double Nike socks, hair dye, and Young Money. The reason why they are extreme is because a lot of people follow them. Hair dye is very creative and a lot of people are getting into the style as well. “But some people don’t just want to dye there hair they just want to see a different change,” said Adamarys. I think what Adamarys said was true but I also think some people take dying there hair to the extreme. But Esmeralda thinks dying your hair makes you who you are. Haircuts are also a part of fads now because you get a lot of types that people like, such as: Taper Fades, Mohawk, Fohawk, and much more. But now there is a lot of old haircuts coming back into style like the Flattops and “the Juice.” But for me, I love rocking the Flattop because it was a major hair cut in a movie I always watched. Snapback hats have made a massive turn around in society as well. At Hirst they were popular in the 80s90s and when Hitted hats Hirst came out they hit a huge down fall. Now you can hardly go any were without seeing someone with a snapback. Esmeralda said, “Snapbacks look way better than Hitted hats.” I think the Mitchell & Ness Raiders and NewEra Expos look the best because of the colors. “There is a lot of fads (trends) that people will continue to make more every day,” said Adamarys.

Together  in  the  Womb,  and  For  LifeBy:  Kenyah  Duran,  Hawk

Do  you  have  trouble  getting  along  with  one  of  your  siblings?  Well,  imagine  being  stuck  together  with  them  through  limb  and  organs  for  the  rest  of  your  life,  unless  you  take  the  chance  at  a  risky  surgery  that  could  possibly  take  both  of  your  lives.

LIFE,  it  is  the  thing  that  many  take  for  granted  everyday.  All  conjoined  twins  (which  are  twins  that  are  stuck  together)  have  to  go  through  a  number  of  surgeries  either  to  be  separated  or  to  stay  alive.

As  Alejandra  Nanez  stated,  “They  have  to  be  strong  as  people  and  in  life.”

She  also  said,  “A  lot  of  recuperating  is  needed,  its  not  easy  to  just  pop  back  into  life.”

Many  people  believe  that  conjoined  twins  are  miserable  and  constantly  struggling  through  their  lives.  Others  may  disagree  with  this  especially  the  conjoined  twins.

For  example  Jennifer  Perez  stated,  “Twins  are  happy  because  they  know  that  God  made  them  that  way  and  they  can’t  do  anything  about  it.”

Unfortunately  not  everyone  is  lucky  enough  to  be  separated  from  their  siblings  and  those  who  are  take  it  for  granted.   Even  regular  twins  don’t  get  along  and  they  are  lucky  enough  to  be  separated.  Fraternal  and  separated  twins  Clayton  and  Cordell  Michaud  can  barely  stand  each  other.

Clayton  and  Cordell  stated  that  if  they  were  to  be  conjoined  they  would,  “Go  to  the  doctor  immediately  because  I  can  barely  stand  being  in  the  same  room  as  him.”

As  you  can  see,  they  are  NOT  two  peas  in  a  pod  like  conjoined  twins  would  have  to  be.

Conjoined  twins,  don’t  have  the  normal  life  that  we  all  get  to  enjoy.

“Life  IS  hard  because  they  have  to  do  everything  together,”  exaggerated  Clayton  and  Cordell  and  many  others  would  agree  with  them.

DSMS  Students  Give  Their  Opinion  on  School  FightsBy:  Ricardo  Enriquez,  Hawk

DSMS  students  consider  school  Hights  as  a  crime  and  agree  that  students  should  be  arrested  for  Highting  so  they  can  learn  a  lesson  and  not  want  to  Hight  anymore.

Police  arrest  students  for  Highting  because  it  is  considered  a  crime.  Sierra  Portillo  said,  “Fighting  is  considered  as  a  crime  because

people  are  using  physical  contact  and  are  assaulting  each  other.”DSMS  students  believe  that  students  Hight  each  other  because  they

think  they  are  better  than  one  another.“Students  Hight  each  other  because  they  are  jealous  of  each  other,”

said  Sierra  Portillo. She  believes  that  students  are  jealous  because  of  each  other’s

talents  and  skills.Fighting  some  people  do  not  consider  it  a  crime;  to  some  students

Highting  can  be  used  as  self-‐defense.“Self  defense  can  help  students  defend  themselves  against  a  bully

or  any  one  who  tries  to  pick  on  them”  said  Sierra  Portillo.Students  that  get  picked  on  should  try  to  prevent  getting  hit,  and  if

they  should  have  to  hit  back,  be  able  to  not  get  in  trouble. There  are  different  ways  to  handle  a  situation  and  Highting  is  not

the  proper  way  to  handle  a  situation.  Students  are  just  hurting  each  other  and  making  things  worse  if  they  Hight,  but  instead  they  can  just  talk  it  out  and  make  up.

You  Stink!  An  Article  On  Body  OdorBy:  Kimberly  O’Neal,  HawkStudents  and  staff  state  their

opinion  on  hygiene  and  the  importance  of  good  hygiene.    Striking  the  balance  of  what  is  good  and  bad  hygiene.

Mr.  Phifer  said,“My  opinion  on  hygiene  is  to  keep  healthy  and  be  socialable,  not  to  over  do  it  and  that  is  the  balance  between  obligation  to  myself  or  others.  Can  I  come  to  school  and  be  myself  or  do  I  have  to  look  and  smell  like  I  just  walked  out  of  a  movie?”

Hygiene  could  be  just  as  simple  as  being  healthy,  like  going  to  the  bathroom  or  letting  gas  out.  But  this  has  a  limited  standard,  because  no  one  wants  to  smell  your  body  gases.  Your  peers  do  not  want  to  be  around  others  that  look  like  they  just  got  out  of  bed,    walked  to  school,  and  did  not  take  a  shower  or  did  not  brush  their  teeth.

Ana  said,  “Kid’s  hygiene  can  be  changed  from  bad  to  good  by  brushing  your  teeth,  and  putting  deodorant  on  and  taking  a  shower.”

If  one  of  your  friends  has  bad  hygiene,  tell  them  because  I  bet  they  rather  a  friend  tell  them  than  to  be  made  fun  of  by  others.  Some  students  get  made  fun  of  on  a  daily  basis  because  they  have  not  taken  care  of  hygiene.

An  eighth  grader  named  Ana  stated,  “Good  hygiene  is  important  so  you  stay  fresh  and  people  do  not  say  mean  things  about  you.”

In  some  cases  it  is  because  the  parents  didn’t  talk  to  them  about  having  good  body  odor  at  a  young  age.

“Your  parents  can  help  you  stay  clean  and  explain  why  it  is  important,”  said  Ana.

“It  has  to  be  the  parents  Hirst  before  the  teacher  or  nurse  because  they  have  the  primary  responsibility  over  the  child,”  stated  Mr.  Phifer.

If  you  think  you  do  not  have  good  hygiene  then  the  person  you  should  go  to  Hirst,  is  your  parents.

Desert  Sands  Volleyball  Team  Thoughts    By:  Sara  Cotey,  Coyote

The  opinions  of  enthusiastic  students  from  DSMS  about  our  volleyball  team  this  fall  season.     Alexa  Toledo  said,  “We  do  have  a  good  chance  in  beating  the  other  schools,  because  the  players  on  our  team  are  really  good  and  they  are  the  same  people  as  last  year.  So  we  have  a  better  chance  in  all  of  our  games.”     Litzy  said,  “We  have  a  good  chance  because,  I  saw  them  practice  and  the  players  are  really  good,  plus  Brenda  Benitez  is  a  good  server.”     Mr.  Ortiz  is  a  good  coach  because  he  helps  you  and  tells  you  what  to  do  to  win.     Litzy  said,  “Mr.  Ortiz  is  a  good  coach  and  coaches  really  well  because  our  school  has  won  every  game  but  one.”   Maritza  said,  “Mr.  Ortiz  knows  how  to  do  his  job,  but  yells  too  much.”     The  volleyball  players  wear  yellow  jerseys  that  say  our  school  name.  They  also  wear  black  basketball  shorts,  knee  pads,  and  put  up  their  hair.  This  way  the  volleyball  players  are  comfortable  and  safe  when  playing  their  game.     Desert  Sands  Volleyball  players  are  really  good  and  so  is  the  coach.  Some  of  the  volleyball  players  look  like  they  can  go  national.

Average  Students  Involved  In  Distracting  Drama  By:  Reyna  Preciado,  HawkAt  Desert  Sands  Middle  School  friendships  are  ended  by  having  to  deal

with  pointless  drama  during  the  school  year  on  a  daily  basis  as  a  result  of  students  wanting  attention  during  8th  grade.

Sometimes  the  cause  of  drama  is  students  judging  other  students.  Everyone  has  experienced  their  own  drama,  but  8th  graders  know  a  lot  about  it  because  they  are  currently  dealing  with  it.  I  interviewed  three  students  in  their  last  year  at  Desert  Sands  that  experience  drama  all  around  them,  therefore  they  are  aware  of  all  types  of  drama.

A  lot  of  times  students  are  not  the  only  ones  suffering  from  drama.  Not  only  them,  but  also  their  grades  are  affected  as  well.  Sometimes  when  students  deal  with  drama  their  grades  go  down.

“Yes,  kids  who  don’t  deal  with  drama  have  better  grades,  because  their  heads  are  not  Hilled  with  distractions  instead  of  what  is  really  important,”  agreed  Estella  Figueroa.

When  students  do  not  deal  with  drama,  they  focus  on  good  grades  and  commit  to  their  schoolwork.

Furthermore,  drama  involves  making  choices.  When  there  is  drama  around  you  because  of  your  friends,  your  friends  make  you  choose  sides.  So  whoever  you  don’t  choose  starts  to  stay  away  from  you  and  let  you  be  with  the  other  friend.  Therefore,  you  lose  a  friend.

“I  dislike  drama  because  I  do  not  like  when  it  involves  choosing  sides,”  Samantha  Arias  admitted.

Sadly,  a  lot  of  students  have  to  deal  with  this  problem.Drama  is  something  that  a  lot  of  students  have  to  deal  with  and  it’s  almost

impossible  to  get  rid  of  completely  in  a  school.    “I  regret  Highting  and  ruining  a  friendship,”  says  Latina  Mesquita.  Drama  mostly  starts  from  someone  saying  something  behind  another

person’s  back.  Or  sometimes  it  is  just  because  someone  made  something  up.  There  are  many  causes  of  drama,  but  the  effect  of  it  is  all  in  your  hands.

When  people  around  you  start  drama  not  only  you,  but  others,  are  affected  in  many  ways.

A  Lonely  Computer  RoomBy:  Giovanni  Rogel,  HawkA  computer  room  at  Desert

Sands  Middle  School  is  computerless  and  vacant.  Two  holes  were  made  on  two  computer  room  walls.  These  holes  gave  the  criminals  access  to  the  computer  room  and  the  computer  cart,  which  contained  all  the  computers.  There  the  criminals  stole  the  vast  majority  of  the  computers.

“This  crime  has  affected  many  people  in  many  different  ways.  For  example,  teachers  will  not  be  able  to  assign  projects  that  require  Internet  research,  which  will  limit  students  learning,”  stated  Jesse.

Not  only  this,  but  this  incident  has  also  made  a  few  teachers  change  their  lesson  plans  or  projects  they  had  planned  in  the  future  for  their  students.                   “Why  don’t  we  just  get  cameras  in  the  classrooms?”  asked  Humberto.

This  is  a  question  many  students  have  been  asking  themselves  ever  since  the  break  in.  Although,  this  may  seem  like  an  exceptional  idea  to  stop  the  prevention  of  school  break-‐ins,  cameras  for  the  school  or  any  other  type  of  security  can  be  quite  pricy.    Many  students  and  parents  disagree  that  cameras  should  be  placed  in  classrooms.  They  believe  that  a  camera  in  a  classroom  is  an  invasion  of  privacy.

“The  actions  of  one  can  affect  many,”  stated  Jesse.

This  is  very  much  true.  The  incident  has  affected  the  students  in  one  way  or  another.  There  is  no  certain  way  to  stop  this  from  occurring  again.  We  as  a  school  can  only  hope  it  does  not.

Teenager’s  Use  of  Technology  By:  Francisco  Celiz,  Hawk  At  Desert  Sands  Middle  School,  kids  are  exposed  to  many  types  of

technology  throughout  the  school  year.  Some  students  may  not  be  familiar  with  certain  technology  because  they  do  not  own  the  same  type  of  technology  other  students  own.   There  are  many  reasons  why  technology  should  be  cheaper  for  the  public.  One  of  the  reasons  is  that  technology  should  be  available  for  everyone.   “A  good  reason  technology  should  be  cheaper  is  so  that  everyone  could  have  technology,”  agrees  Jocelyn.   Technology  is  advancing  so  much  that  people  do  not  know  how  far  it  will  go.  People  also  do  not  know  if  it  will  end  up  failing  or  succeeding.     ‘’I  believe  technology  is  going  to  end  up  failing  in  a  very  bad  way,”  said  Oscar.     This  maybe  because  inventors  are  coming  up  with  ways  to  make  advances  in  technology.  The  technology  that  is  coming  out  could  be  harmful  to  all  of  us.  It  could  make  us  depend  on  whatever  we  are  using.  I  have  many  wishes  for  technology  in  my  life  and  many  things  I  would  like  to  see  and  own.   “I  wish  technology  advanced  so  far  that  there  are  invisible  phones  or  Hlying  cars,”  Oscar  mentioned.   Everyone  should  have  the  chance  to  be  ahead  of  the  game.Technology  is  something  everyone  should  have  the  right  to  own  no  mater  what  their  economic  situation  is.  No  one  should  be  denied  the  chance  to  buy  technology.   ‘’A  lot  of  people  don’t  buy  technology  for  themselves  or  their  children  because  they  don’t  have  enough  money,’’  explained  Jocelyn.   All  over  the  world  technology  is  too  expensive  for  many  people.  The  main  reason  many  kids  are  unfamiliar  with  lots  of  technology  is  because  their  parents  do  not  have  the  money  to  buy  it.

The Gem Stone Door By: Iyonnisti White (Owls Writing, 7th Grade)! The gem stone door was more ravishing than going to class and learning. I was the only who who could see the door at school. The door was wide open and what was behind it was a secret until now. I saw a magical world. When I went in, I had lots of magical powers. There was also a wizard who escorted me to places.! To start with, behind the stone door there was a world filled with spellbinding and enchanting creatures. I saw a sorcerer, vampire, warlock, goblin, and talking animals. It was very amusing to hear and to see. I also saw the sorcerers, vampires, warlocks, and goblins using magic and they had humorous language and garments. When they were doing magic they told me to come and they were throwing some magic shimmer on me. I had so much fun going through that dazzling stone door. It was so amazing to see them using their magic. ! As soon as I went in, I had a lot of amazing, magical, and entertaining powers. When they were twinkling glitter on me, I was flying around and as I was flying I accidentally pointed my magic finger and them and they flew backwards. It was very laughable. They gave me magic lessons and it was very hard to learn, but when I did master it, they said that I was wonderful. During the lessons we were play fighting with the pleasing powers and I had so much fun playing. When they said I was a master I was really pleased. I was really happy to have magical powers and was so gleeful that they gave it to me. It was the finest day ever.! Later on, a honorable wizard took my elbow and escorted me to different places. The first place that the wizard escorted me was to a place called Narnia. It was a place filled with stunning magical creatures and magic. The second place the humorous wizard took me was to a place called Gardinia. This was a place filled with good and bad fairies and warlocks. The last place he took me was to a place called, “The Garden of Nigh Children and Shadow Hunters.” It was a place filled with mostly shadow hunters and the night children. It was so happy he took me to all those places. He was showing me that there was all kids of magic in places that didnʼt expect it to be.! Behind the gem door was a wizard with magic. When I went in, I had lots of magical powers and there was a wizard that escorted me places. After all that happened, I was happy that I had magic. I was sad that day was over, but I had learned so much. When I went back through the door, the school day was already over. I left school and went home with a huge grin on my face knowing there was a world with magic. I also called my friend to find out what the homework I missed.

DSMS  Gives  Opinion  On  Dog  AbuseBy:  Jennifer  Perez,  Roadrunner

Desert  Sands  Middle  School  students  think  dog  abuse  is  an  awful  situation  because  dogs  do  not  do  anything  to  deserve  it.

Why  do  people  abuse  their  dogs?  Dogs  do  not  do  anything  to  their  owner  for  them  to  just  go  head  and  beat  them  to  demise.  What  do  you  think  can  be  done  to  stop  dog  abuse?

Everybody  agrees  that  if  anyone  abuses  a  dog,  there  will  be  consequences,  and  they  will  have  a  big  problem.

“Abusing  a  dog  anywhere  in  the  United  States  is  not  permitted  because  if  you  abuse  a  dog  it’s  like  abusing  an  adolescent,”  said  Jacky,  Stephanie,  and  Mari  Cruz.

Do  you  think  people  get  delirious  and  dejected  about  hearing  about  dog  abuse  reports?  Yes,  they  do.  People  that  have  allegiance  to  pets  anguish  about  them  being  abused.

Substantially  Jacky,  Stephanie,  and  Mari  Cruz  said,  “Dog  abuse  is  really  horrible  because  everybody  lets  their  dogs  leave  and  let  them  starve  out  in  the  streets.”

But  the  fact  is  instead  of  letting  them  go,  they  could  give  them  away  or  take  them  to  an  adoption  area  for  pets.

Jacky,  Stephanie,  and  Mari  Cruz  stated,  “People  abuse  dogs  because  that’s  how  they  get  their  anger  out.”

I  think  that  is  messed  up  because  dogs  do  absolutely  nothing  to  the  owner.  Dogs  do  not  deserve  to  get  beaten.
