LOCATION-Ithaca, sometimes called in this section "Crown ofCayuga," and known far and wide as the home of Cornell University, isfamous for three things: its wonderful setting at the head of Cayuga Lake inthe midst of the Finger Lakes Region, its culture and refined atmosphere in allcircles of business and social life; its educational institutions. Located in theheart of western New York State, it is 247 miles to New York City, 404 to
Cayuga Lake and Stewart Park
Boston, 675 to Chicago, 302 to Philadelphia, 37 to Elmira, 40 to Geneva, 20to Cortland, 57 to Syracuse, 212 to Albany, 195 to Schenectady, 88 to Rochester. Area is 6 square miles.
TOPOGRAPHY-Many pages could be devoted to a description of Ithacatopographically. It is doubtful if any city in America has such a remarkable
formation of level land, hills, cliffs, gorgesand water falls. All this variety is so blendedthat it is almost inspiring to the visitor topass from one spectacle to another. The viewshown above is Ithaca's water front and lake. For a mile and a half from the shore the land islevel and contains the business section of thecity, railroad yards, statio1\S, etc.; the heightsare covered with beautiful homes, the extensive campus and buildings of Cornell University, some factories and even railroads whichclimb out of the city; the highlands of thecity are gouged by great gorges beginning atthe south with Buttermilk Falls Creek andGorge 1 mile south; Coy's Glen 3 miles inlength; Cascadilla Creek and Gorge, at lowerend of Cornell University Campus; FallCreek Gorge, north of Cornell UniversityCampus. (A more complete description ofthese gorges and water falls, under Parks andPoints of Interest-see index). The altitudeof the main section of the city is about 800feet, the highlands 1150 feet.

HISTORICAL-Ithaca was first settled in 1789. This was ten yearsafter the visit of a detachment of 200 men commanded by Col. Dearborn fromthe expeditionary force of Gen. Sullivan,on Sept. 23, 1779. These first whitesettlers founded Ithaca, named by SimeonDeWitt in 1795. The Cayuga Indians, one of the six Nations, preserve the legendof the Great Spirit placing his hand uponthe earth to form this region of the FingerLakes. Organized as a village in 1821.Incorporated as a city in 1888.
POPULATION-The present population of Ithaca is 20,716. In 1925 thestate census gave 18,948. In 1920 itwas 17,004, 1910, 14,802, 1900, 13,130,1890, 11,072. There are about 90%native born with native stock predominating, about 5% colored. The studentpopulation of Ithaca is about 7,000,making a total population over 27,000.Growth last 10 years has been nearly 20per cent.
MERCANTILE-Ithaca is a tradingcenter of 60,000 people and has storesthat compare favorably with cities muchlarger. Because of the Universitypopulation and a community educated to want the best, the retail establishments carry merchandise equallying in variety and quality the stocks of storesin leading eastern cities. Wholesale houses distribute over a large territory. There are about 400 retail establishments, 15 wholesale, and about 275 professional offices. The merchants of Ithaca are noted for their service andcourteous treatment which has done much to make Ithaca popular as a tradingcenter for those living outside of the city.
INDUSTRIAL-By foresight of its public spirited citizens and the cityitself many acres or square miles in and around the city comprising parks andplaygrounds, scenic gorges and public lands adaptable as well for industrialpurposes are available for all future time.
Educational advantages for industrial workers and their families, including a liberal policy provision for vocationaleducation and training in the publicschools.
Recreation and amusement of thepeople provided abundantly with sportsand pleasures of every description. Lakeand stream, gorges and water falls, swimming, boating, fishing, college, school andpublic sports of every description makea most attractive living environmentfor people engaged in high class industry. Not a large industrial center, but a verysubstantial and successful part of ourcommunity engaged in production havean unusual standard of living not possiblein the large industrial centers. Thereforein this modern age, Ithaca is one of themost attractive places available for production plants requiring fine rail andwater transportation facilities, high class
labor, power and living conditions unsurpassed for contentment and happiness.
1932-ITHAcA DIRECTORy-1932 19
Large corporations more or less national in scope find a very economiccondition, much more so than in congested areas for establishment of theircentral offices, where abundant, intelligent, well educated employees areavailable for this kind of work. High standard of living at comparative lowcost works to the advantage of both employer and employee.
The history of Ithaca for more than 100 years reflects a slow but steadygrowth, a well balanced attractive American city, where economic and culturallife grow side by side, creating one of the most attractive places in existence tolive a full, happy and contented life.
Morse Industries
Those engaged in industry and the economic struggle breathe an atmosphere of culture and education that invariably results in the next generationseeking and obtaining both of these desirable things that equip them for afuture that advances the whole population along rapid lines of progress.

1932--ITHACA DIRECTORy--1932
?I1'i1ltITH A TOTAL OF NINETEEN, repre~ senting all the leading denominations,Ithaca is well supplied with churches.
These noble edifices placed at intervals aboutthe:"city add much to its attractiveness andcharm.
It is the belief of many Ithacans of vision thatthis full and adequate supply of churches isone of the greatest of the many resources ofthe city.
That for newcomers it is a factor that makesforlthe ready assimilation into the religiousand social life of the community and hastenstheltime~:required to make citizens of thestrangers who come to us.
The!church of today is the greatest of all institutions for the planting of good thoughtsin the minds of the people and stands as thebulwark against degrading influences thatsurround us.
Therefore let us give a thought to these institutions that form so great a part of ourcity life and in vizualizing our future greatness let us remember their value as

Know
FIRST-What line of goods you handle. SECOND-where you are located. Pick up a City Directoryanywhere, and almost invariably you can tell whothe progressive, up-to-date merchants and pro-

THE BEST ADVERTISING MEDIUM IS THE
CITY DIRECTORYBecause It Is Used The Most To Find Just Such
Information You Most Wish To Have
The Public Know
FIRST-what line of goods you handle. SECOND-where you are located. Pick up a City Directoryanywhere, and almost invariably you can tell whothe progressive, up-to-date merchants and professional men are. There are many brands ofclothing, shoes, dry goods, groceries, etc. andsome prefer one kind, some another. Whatbetter place to state your special brands than inthe City Directory?
