Spelling Bee Guidelines (Third-Eighth Grade)

Students will not be permitted to bring any word lists, practice sheets, or reference materials to the Spelling Bee. During competition, teachers are to read the words starting from the top of the list and working downward. Words have been arranged

according to their difficulty level. The Spelling Bee is for students in third, fourth, fifth, and Middle School. When a student is ready to answer, please follow the traditional format of having the student speak the word once, spell the word, and

then repeat the word once more. For example, “heart h-e-a-r-t heart”. Students will be permitted to ask for clarification regarding a word. Students may ask to have the word repeated and/or to have a

definition repeated aloud. Students will be given one opportunity to correctly spell the word in play. Students may pause momentarily to gather their thoughts, but

once a letter has been spoken aloud, students cannot “take back” their spelling or ask to “redo” their spelling if they feel that they have made an error. Once a letter has been spoken out loud, it counts toward the final answer. No “re-do’s”. Students are encouraged to think before they speak to avoid accidentally misspelling a word.

If a student misspells the word in play, that word will be discarded from the competition, and the next word on the list will be used for the following student. That student is then disqualified from the competition for misspelling.

If during any given round, all spellers misspell, all students from that round will remain in the competition, and a new round will begin. If during any given round, only one speller has correctly spelled, the single correct speller will then be given a new word. If that student

correctly spells the new word, (s)he will be declared the winner of the Spelling Bee. If that student misspells the new word, all students from the previous round will remain in the competition and a new round will begin.

There will be 2 final winners.
