George Elmy Lifeboat HouseEast Durham Heritage Group will be opening the doors of the George Elmy Lifeboat House and Heritage Centre throughout festival week. The Heritage Centre tells the story of the tragedy of the George Elmy lifeboat and how it was brought back to life by the fantastic work of the Heritage Group. Come along and find out how the story unfolds throughout the years and the fascinating story of how the boat was brought home. Open all week

Seaham and Ryhope Circular Guided Walk 10am-12 NoonWhy not get some sea air and join Paul Steele (aka the Bald Hiker!) who will be following the England Coast Path north from Seaham. The total walk is approx. 5 miles. Refreshments are available on your return to Tonia’s café (own cost). Meet outside Tonia’s beach café, Seaham Hall Beach car park, North Road, SR7 7EU.

Beach Clean, 11am-1pmIan, Coastal Ranger, will be at Hendon beach and carrying out a litter pick and all help is very much welcome! Why not come along and join in if you can spare an hour? All equipment will be supplied. Children must be accompanied by adults. Please wear sturdy footwear and suitable clothing.Meet at Hendon Beach at 11am off Commercial Road, next to Jack Crawford House.

Half Term Family fun at the Marina!, 12 Noon-4pmThat’s the way to do it! The award winning Llewellyn4fun will bring their famous Punch and Judy shows to the Marina, starting at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Learn circus skills with Marko; come and see Wanda, the vintage caravan all the way from Beamish Museum, join the Wellbeing for Life Team for beach games and a picnic on the Slope beach (noon-3pm) Face painting, kite making and badge making, meet the RNLI and water sport taster sessions on the Slope beach too! Great old fashioned fun for all the family! (Please note the beach picnic is free of charge,

but supplies are limited). Seaham Marina, SR7 7EE1pm and 3pm Kayaks, Canoes and Boards! Never tried paddle sports before? Why not come and have a go at different kayaks, canoes and paddle boards. Rockpool ramble at Blackhall12 Noon-2pm Rockpool expert David Etheridge will be running a rockpool ramble at Blackhall Rocks, find out what creatures are on your shoreline. Bring a net and bucket if you can!Meet at 12 Noon in the coastal car park at Blackhall (past Station Road, TS27 4AD) to walk down to the beach together.

Horden Fun in the Park!1-3pm Bringing the beach to you! Join Michelle and her team for some beach themed games, crafts, boats and some shell art and beach themed stories and lots more in Cotsford Park, Horden. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Paddle Boarding Taster Sessions9am and 11amSUP or Stand-up paddle boarding is becoming very popular! Come and join this fun taster session to see if it’s for you! Bring a change of clothes and footwear.

Easington Colliery Beach Play! 10am-4pm All families are welcome to come along and join in the fun with plenty of games on the beach at Horden! Limited places - please call Esther on 01207 524 803 to book your place! Meeting point will be given on booking.

National Trust Walk through Hawthorn Dene and bird ringing demonstration 10am-1pm Join Mark and Wayne, the National Trust Durham Coast Team for a ramble to beautiful Hawthorn Dene and learn a bit of history of this special place and how it is managed today. Participants will be able to watch a bird ringing demonstration and find out how it’s done! Walk is approx. 3 miles, sturdy footwear essential. Meet outside Hawthorn Community Centre, Hawthorn Village, SR7 8SB.

Horden to Easington Circular Guided Walk 11am-2pm Also a visit to Horden Heritage Centre and vintage tea rooms. Paul Steele is back leading another circular walk on our coastline! You can see how the area has changed in recent years after the demise of the coal industry. Find out about the fascinating geology and grasslands and wonderful coastal views that this area has to offer. Meet outside Horden Heritage Centre and café in the Welfare Park, Park Lane, Horden, SR8 4DE. Refreshments are available at the café (own cost).

Kites, Crafts and Rockpooling at Ryhope 11am-3pmLets go fly a kite! Join us at Ryhope Community Centre where we will be making and flying kites along with other craft activities, 11-1.30pm. 2-3pm Leaving the Community Centre, we will head to Ryhope beach for a spot of rockpool rambling with Steve and Ian our expert sea critter spotters! Help us find residents of the rocky shore at Ryhope. Wellies essential! If you can, please bring a bucket and net along with you. Ryhope Community Centre, Black Road, SR2 0RX.

Blackhall Fun!, 1-3pm Bringing the beach to you! Join Michelle and her team for some beach themed games, crafts, boats and some shell art and beach themed stories and lots more in the Welfare Park at Blackhall. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Blackhall Colliery Welfare Park, Eleventh Street, TS27 4LX.

The Thinker’s Walk, 3-6pmDid you know some of the finest thinker’s in history were also enthusiastic walkers? Join in the debate with issues relevant to us, our society and the place that we call our coast.Meet at Seaton Lane Inn where you will board the minibus to the start of the walk. Walk duration 1.5 hours (approx. 2 miles, sturdy footwear essential); the walk will end with the minibus back and the opportunity for a cup of tea or fish and chips (own cost) when the conversation will continue! Booking only by calling 03000 268 131.

Kayaks, Canoes and Boards! 9am and 11am Never tried paddle sports before? Why not come and have a go at different kayaks, canoes and paddle boards. Secrets of Seaham Archaeology Walk 10-11.30am Meet our archaeologist friend Nick who will take you on a trek through time, taking in St. Mary’s Church and letting you in on archaeological secrets in Seaham! Walk length approx. 1 mile. Meet outside Tonia’s café, Seaham Hall beach car park (opp Seaham Hall Hotel), SR7 7EU.

Ryhope Heritage Walk and Talk, 11am-1pm There’s so much history on our doorstep waiting to be discovered. Join us for a guided walk around Ryhope and learn about how the village evolved from a small settlement to the vibrant community we see today. Walk will last approx. 2 hours and it is approx. 3 miles long. Sturdy walking footwear essential. Meet outside Ryhope Community Centre, Black Road, SR2 0RX.

Pond Dipping, 1-3pm at Easington Colliery Local Nature Reserve Find out what lurks in Easington’s pond with our expert amphibian spotter David! This former mining area is now a peaceful home to insects, flowers and wildlife. Meet at Easington Colliery Bandroom, facing the playpark/memorial gardens SR8 3QH.

Fun and Games at Hendon Beach, 11.30am-2pmBall games, running, splashing and generally have lots of fun on Hendon beach with North East Sports beach school! Places are limited so book up early at www.northeastsport.co.uk. Come along and join in the fun! Meet at the Raich Carter Centre, Sunderland, SR2 8PD.

Seaham Marina stroll and stories with Norman , 2-3pm Nobody knows the marina as well as Norman! Join him on this fascinating journey through time looking at the geology of Red Acre Point, the ecology of the area and the history that made the marina the place we see today. Meet at Seaham Marina, North Terrace, Seaham, SR7 7EE (George Elmy Lifeboat House).

Talking about Little terns!10-30-11.30amThe Little Tern nests on the beach at Crimdon every year and are one of Britain’s rarest seabirds. Come along and meet Trevor Stephenson who has looked after our beautiful feathered visitors at Crimdon for many years. Start the morning with a short talk on the fascinating story of the Little Tern’s journey and the range of problems they face before heading back to West Africa. You will have a chance to visit the colony at a safe distance where the birds can be viewed without causing disturbance. Don’t forget your binoculars! Little Tern Hut (past Equestrian Centre), park at Crimdon beach car park, TS27 4BL.

Not for Softies! River to River Walk Organised by North East Sport, this walk is approximately 25 miles along the coast from the Wear to the Tees. It’s tough going so not for the faint hearted! Booking is through North East Sports website www.northeastsport.co.uk/coastalwalk. Over 18 years only. The walk will take up to 8 hours including a lunch break (don’t forget to bring one with you and plenty of water!) This is a free event, however the return journey is by train from Hartlepool so you’ll need your train fare – it’s a long walk back! Meet at 9.30 a.m. at the rear of the Sunderland Echo 24 Building, (on the River Wear side), SR1 1XH.

Monsters in the Dene1.30-3.30pmCalling all brave young explorers to Hawthorn Dene Nature Reserve to join our woodland storyteller and create your own monster in the trees. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free of charge. Bookings only:Please book your place at www.durhamwt.co.uk

Beach Blitzes - World Environment Day, 3-4pm As it’s World Environment Day on 5 June, what better way to draw our festival to a close with two beach blitzes! Lets see how many bags of rubbish we can get off the beaches at Crimdon and North Gare! Litter pickers and bags provided – please bring gloves with you. Crimdon – meet at the stepped access point onto the beach at 3pm. North Gare – meet at North Gare car park at 3pm.

‘Sit on Top’ Kayak Taster sessions 9am and 11am Have you always wanted to give kayaking a go but thought you need special skills? Coaching given followed by a little trip around the Marina. Talking about Little terns!10-30-11.30amThe Little Tern nests on the beach at Crimdon every year and are one of Britain’s rarest seabirds. Come along and meet Trevor Stephenson who has looked after our beautiful feathered visitors at Crimdon for many years. Start the morning with a short talk on the fascinating story of the Little Tern’s journey and the range of problems they face before heading back to West Africa. You will have a chance to visit the colony at a safe distance where the birds can be viewed without causing disturbance. Don’t forget your binoculars! Not for Softies! River to River Walk Organised by North East Sport, this walk is approximately 25 miles along the coast from the Wear to the Tees. It’s tough going so not for the faint hearted! The walk will take up to 8 hours including a lunch break (don’t forget to bring one with you and plenty of water!) This is a free event, however the return journey is by train from Hartlepool so you’ll need your train fare – it’s a long walk back! Geology Walk, 1.30-3.30pm During the Permian period between 300-250 million years ago, Britain lay at the equator and was covered by tropical seas, deltas and rainforests. Find out more about this amazing geological journey with Ken Bradshaw who will take you through the geological highlights that can

Seaham Rock Pool Rummage, 11am-12 NoonJoin marine experts Steve and Mark for a rummage around Seaham’s rockpools exploring rockpool life as the tide goes out and see what lies along your shoreline! As well as seeing the streets where Billy danced and lived you can learn about the local history of this former pit village too with Brian from Easington Colliery Heritage Group. Join in our day of celebration and work with professional artists to make your own sculptures showing how we can make things that are the same into something very different! Hawthorn Conservation Taster Task, 12 Noon-3pm The National Trust’s Mark and Wayne are back with their quest to help keep the coast looking spectacular for us all to enjoy! They will be carrying out some habitat management work on the coast based around the Durham Argus butterfly, one of the country’s rarest invertebrates. There will also be scrub clearing, rock rose planting – if anyone would like a taster session on volunteering with the Trust this is the ideal opportunity! Sturdy footwear and old clothing essential.Meet outside Hawthorn Community Centre, Hawthorn Village, SR7 8SB – meeting up and walking to the coast together.
