My Dear People, Today’s theme on the Readings: STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. In Christ, Father John

The Library Corner Good Sunday to you all! It’s mid-August and that means your time for Summer reading is coming

to an end. I want to give you one last look at our RSRL (Recommended Summer Reading List). Below are listed two more books that we hope will entice you to come in, have a look, and find something that will further enrich these last few days before the pressures of the new school year and the holidays descend.

Theology for Beginners, by F.J . Sheed. (Frank Sheed: A renown Catholic writer and lecturer.)

The Prayers and Personal Devotions of Mother Angelica. Introduced and Edited by Raymond Arroyo. (A close encounter with a world class woman of faith.)

The Feast of the Assumption of our blessed Mother is in three days and the library has over 50 books, CD’s and DVD’s that honor and better acquaint us with Mary. Two books that appear especially appealing are:

The World’s First Love, by Fulton J . Sheen. Mary’s Answer For Our Troubled Times, by Fr . Gerald

Vann, O.P. As one who is coming late to an appreciation of Mary’s role in our faith, I encourage you to join me in seeking a closer and more meaningful relationship with the Mother of Our Lord. Remember, August 15, A Holy Day!

Our next STM Youth Summer Hangout is Sunday, August 19th after the 5:00pm Mass. We had a blast at our last hangout and you don't want to miss out on the prayer, fun, food and fellowship! All high school youth are welcome!

Like Elijah, don't we often get weary? We get weary for many reasons, even weary of doing good and believing all that Christ has taught. Sometimes, we forget (or fail to believe) that there are angels who constantly serve the Lord and protect us from all evil. They are mentioned in scripture, as in today's first reading, and several times in the Gospels. When an angel comes from God and wakes Elijah and tells him to eat and drink the food that God has provided, he obeys immediately and sleeps again. Again the angel awakens him and bids him eat and drink. And "strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb." This is quite a feat--to walk for forty days on one meal. But it is symbolic of our strengthening by the Eucharist to face all that we must in our day-to-day living. Sometimes we seem to be walking forever, exhausted and discouraged, but--conscious of the strength that comes from the Eucharist--we walk with faith and courage, facing whatever difficulties we encounter along the way. FORGIVENESS These days, we find ourselves in a bitterly divided nation and a divided Church. We may see ourselves as both right and righteous, but we need to take a closer look at both ourselves and others before we make judgments. It is certainly possible that we are right and the other side quite wrong, but we must be aware, with humility, that we may be the ones who are wrong about many things. Even if we are in the right, Saint Paul reminds us that "All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice." To be right is of no consequence if we are constantly condemning and ridiculing our "opponents" in the world and in the Church. "And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ," says Saint Paul. So "do not grieve the Holy Spirit." FOOD OF LIFE "Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God." Jesus speaks of himself as the "bread of life." He teaches that those who come to him are called by God, and that he himself is the only one who has seen God; if we believe, we will be raised on the last day. If we think we are right only because we believe we are right, based on our own knowledge, we kid ourselves. If we believe we are right because we follow the writings of others who boast of their knowledge of God but do not show it in kindness and love for others, we are fools. If we condemn others because they do not believe as we do, we condemn ourselves for not following the humble and gentle Jesus. We must be kind, and always remember that "They shall all be taught by God." Judge not, for as Jesus tells us, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever . . . whoever believes has eternal life." Copyright (c) J. S. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Careful readers of the “Treasures” will have noticed that the two columns about the oldest monastic communities in the United States refer to the colonial states. The Louisiana Purchase gained a great treasure for our nation, the Ursuline monastery of New Orleans. Among the greatest pioneers of that city were nuns who came from France on a perilous voyage in 1727, pestered by pirates and tossed by fearsome storms. These were genteel, well-educated Ursulines, yet their first task was to roll up their sleeves and open a hospital to care for the pestilence-ridden colony. Next, they opened a school for girls and launched a plan to educate the women being shipped over from France to marry settlers. In this way, they had enormous influence in molding patterns of family and domestic life. At Christmastime in 1814, the threat of a British assault on the city was growing. On the terrifying night of January 7, 1815, the women of New Orleans gathered in the monastery chapel to pray that the city be spared from destruction in battle. The mother superior made a vow to have a Mass of Thanksgiving on that date every year should the Americans win. That night, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to whom the nuns had great devotion, became the protector and patron of this great city. The convent in the French Quarter is the oldest standing building in the Mississippi valley, and the only surviving building of the French colonial period. The nuns relocated in 1824, but their old monastery is preserved as a museum and archives for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The school the nuns began, Ursuline Academy, is the oldest continuously operating Catholic school, and school for women, in the United States. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
