POINT/COUNTER POINT
Course AccuracyRoy [email protected]
I recentlv ran a race in 29:07, only to be disappointed when I
heard that the course was reputed to be short, (tcompletely
devalued what was otherwise a PR effort. At a recent 10-K. I
sprinted in while watching the clock turn to :)6.59, only tohave my
elation dashed upon looking at my watch and seeing 37:07. After
conferring with other runners, it was apparent that thefinish line
clock was 8 seconds off. Late last season, I ran my heart out in a
lO-K, only to be disappointed with my time, and laterheard rumors
that the course was long.
Also, too many times I've needlessly adjusted my pace due to an
erroneous mile splits. 1 now race based on heart rate, andignore
mile splits.
Race directors in general do an excellent job, but why is it so
difficult to accurately measure a course, and the interveningmiles?
PR attempts require a rare combination of peaking in your training,
the weather, and picking a fast course. Virtually all of tnyPR's
are debatable because of questionable course measurement or faulty
timing. It has gotten to the point where you can't trust anyrace
(certified or not) unless it's on a track.
Runners' EffortSteve [email protected]
As a past director of a number of races, 1 am frustrated. I have
measured courses with a wheel, with a vehicle, front to back, back
10 front, in rain, and snow. Sometimes it even snows after you have
the course measured. 1 must mark the course withremovable markers
so the park is not damaged, Then, as a race director, you get to
the venue at 6:00 AM - 3 to 4 hours before theevent, to get a fire
going, shovel snow from the registration area, get the coffee
going, get registration set up, erect the finish line andon and on.
Then you start the race and what do you get? 100 runners - most of
whom do not even try hard enough to get a PR.
Why do race directors go through all the effort? 1 don't know, 1
guess it is just because they love the sport. They love tosweat.
They love to smell the grass, trees and leaves and yes, even the
snow. But most of all they love you guys and girls that makethis
club the greatest. Keep running - and don't sweat the small
stufP.

H e l l o !
Hello, from the Director of Advertising for Taconic. I thought
it would be good to introduce everyone, especially our newmembers
to why, and how we advertise in Taconic Running Life. (Did you know
it was originally Susan and Howie Solow's idea toadd advertising to
the newsletter?) 1 also want to take this opportunity to talk about
an exciting new opportunity, advertising on ourWeb page. There your
ad can be seen by the world.
For any advertising questions, please get in touch with me. 1 am
easy to catch since I am a slow runner. My e-mail, snailmail and
phone number are at the end. Advertising is used to offset the cost
of printing the newsletter and to offset web page serverand set-up
costs.
First, with regard to this newsletter, we offer four kinds of
ads, they are business card, quarter, half and full page ads.
Thecosts per year (six issues) are $60 for business card, $127.50
quarter page, $229 half page and $408 for a full page ad. Our
mailingfor each newsletter is about 500.
Now for the exciting part, we are also offering advertising on
our award winning WEB page, created by the world renownedGreg
Diamond. We offer banners for the following Web pages at the prices
indicated.TRRC Home page http://www.runner.org for $300 annualTRRC
Schedule http://www.runner.org/tacsch.htm for $250 annualTRRC Race
results http://www.runner.org/results.htm for $250 annualOther
smaller advertisements could be negotiated. Our web page receives
about 1,000 individual hits per month. Additionally, wehave a
Veterans, team page, http://www.runner.org/veterans.htm Some old
guy might want to sponsor it.
This is a great opportunity to get you business before others.
It is also great for a company with national or state ties,
sinceour web page is visible to the world.
One last additional opportunity. We are developing a page for
the web that will include reference to all sponsors
providingdiscounts to Taconic members. Costs of a small business
card size ad for that page will be $25 per year. It will be a
voluntary pagethat can be selected off the main page. You will be
able to print the page to take it to the participating providers
for your discounts.
My, aren't we just running across that bridge to the 21st
century? Keep your mouths closed, lest you gather bugs.Steve Quinn

The Struggle WithinBy David Pacchiana
As 1 pull on my New BalanceAnd lace them up tightI envision my

After checking the weatherAnd wishing the skies fairI gauge my

Depending on the scheduleIt might be tempo, intervals, or long1
wish they were all easyThe pain we endure seems just plain

TRRC Men's Team ReportBy Scott Abercrombie
The first race of the 1998 New York Road Runners Grand Prix was
the Frostbite 10-Miler. Ouch! Another 10 miler. As youcan see from
the '98 NYRRC Grand Prix schedule listed in this issue, the New
York clubs love the longer distances. The variousclubs, TRRC
included, vote on the selection of races for the Grand Prix each
year at a NYRRC Club Council meeting.
Anyway, last year our men's masters team (40 year olds) barely
beat the Staten Island Athletic Club. Unfortunately, theyhave had
more than their fair share of injuries, and they may not be as
formidable this year. Not to worry, Central Park did us in atthe
10-miler on January 10th. Their first 40 year old, Alan Ruben, was
8th out of 1379 with a time of 54:30! Steve Calidonna, withminimal
training, led our team to a second place finish with a time of
around 59 minutes. Steve was followed by Roy Altman, JeffPurdy,
Eric Miethner, Bob Daubenbis and me.
We redeemed ourselves at the 2nd race of the Grand Prix Series,
the Snowflake 4 Miler on February 21. Phil Richey ledwith a
stunning 20:56, two seconds ahead of Alan Ruben. Greg Diamond and
Steve Calidonna also scored with times of 22:05 and22:22
respectively, followed by the rest of our small army. Rick Ashby,
Mike Carney, Bob Daubinbis, Tom Maloney, Jeff Purdy andme. We are
now tied with Central Park in the grand prix, so once again, the
race is on! Incidentally, we will also be competing in
theMetropolitan Athletic Congress Grand Prix, and at least one
national event, thus a total of about 18 races for the men's
masters team.
Taconic Women's Teams ReportBy Debra Kenney
Our 1998 NYRRC Grand Prix Series started off a little too close
to the end of the holiday season with the Fred LebowClassic, a five
miler held on January 4th. The women's masters team finished in
second place thanks to great running by MargieKatt, 35:41, Susan
Dantus 37:25, Nancy Young 37:35 and Lee Saroken 37:45 and me 34:03.
The Women's Veterans Team was ledby Melanie Benvenue 37:07, Carol
Hanson 38:13, and Kathleen D'Ott&vio 45:40.
Our second race of the season was the Snowflake 4 Miler held on
February 21 st. The open women's team was composed ofBarbara
Brittan 27:02, Sherri Schultz 28:38, Gaynelle Farina 37:12 and
Heather Quinn 36:01. The master's women were led byNancy Vasta
28:32, Robin Maloney 30:00, Nancy Young 30:02, Greta Olsson 34:06,
Katy Quinn 36:01, and me 27:07. Thewomen's veterans team was
represented by Melanie Benvenue 29:17, Lee Saroken (the veteran's
women's newest member) 29:19,Carol Hanson 30:30 and Kathleen
D'Ottavio 34:35.

Tr a c k T i m eIt's almost that time of year again (daylight
savings
time). That means it's time for speedwork! Coach DougMiller has
volunteered his time again to coordinate weeklytrack workouts at
Yorktown High School on Wednesdays at6:00 p.m. Sessions will
occasionally be moved to another siteto do hill repeats for a
change of pace (advance notice will begiven).
These workouts are open to TRRC members of allabilities, as they
are divided into three groups. It is a greatway to build strength,
speed, and endurance with the addedmotivation of a group -
sometimes as large as 40+ runners.Track begins April 8th at 6:00
p.m. at Yorktown High School,Rt. 202, Yorktown Heights.
Putnam County ClassicPasta Party
Last year's race was a big success, and we're lookingforward to
an even bigger event for 1998. The pasta party atArturo's was a
huge hit, even though it came through at thelast minute. We could
only notify pre-registered runners, because the deal was done only a
week before the race. Thisyear we are hoping to have another
pre-race pasta party &race package pickup the night before the
event (Friday night).Details have not been worked out as of ye, so
we will keepyou posted with notes in TRL and info on future flyers.
Passthe info along to a friend! The PutnamClassic is a great wayto
celebrate Independence Day!
Thanks,Fred Reger, Race Director

On Sunday, December 7th (Pear! Harbor Day) I hadthe distinct
pleasure of running in my first Couples Relay. Iran this race, not
with my life partner, my wife Marie, but withmy daughter Leah. Leah
is 11 years old and enjoys running, especially trails. Having
started at Fox Lane Middle Schoolthis year, she has had the
opportunity to run outdoors moreoften and said she prefers "cross
country " to the track!
The race started at a respectable time of 11:00 a.m.and the
weather was a bit on the cool side, but dry. There wasa course
diagram (expertly drawn) that was easy to follow, but with this
being Leah's first race of three miles (That'swhat the application
said.) 1 requested permission and wasgranted to run the women's leg
as well as my own. After therequired photo at the start, we were
off - all the women andm e .
Leah did great, she held a good pace, slipped and fellin a mud
puddle on a sharp turn and was cheered for by thosein
attendance.
Now it was my turn to run the same course that I justcompleted
with my partner, and after the tag, / was off Well,/ must have been
so focused on Leah in her leg that afterpassing a runner, I missed
a turn and had a lovely run in thewoods! After crossing the second
bridge and seeing the trailnarrow much more than / remembered, I
realized my error. So, back I went, to where 1 was supposed to turn,
and Jinishedup after the clock had been turned off All in all, it
was agreat day. We couldn't stay for pancakes, but I earned a
newmoniker ("Wrong way Londrigan").
Leah and I will be back next year, so watch out!

New Faces And New Places For The 1998 SeasonBy Rich Nash - 50's
team captain
It's a new season for the New York Road Runners Club (NRRC)
Grand Prix Series. There are a few new races on the circuitfor this
year-see-race calendar, and new faces for the Veterans team. With
the addition of Tony Galfano, James Hagar, Dan Fritzsche,Dave 0
Toole, Jim Martin, Judson Ramaker, and Bronislaw Czech in August,
our roster is now up to 43 hungry, competitive, veteranrunners. Now
that's a powerful team!
We are delighted to have the additional runners. We need a large
roster, especially with our injury prone bodies, scheduleconflicts,
and vacations throughout the season. It's hard to believe, but our
first race of the season, the Frostbite 10 Miler, is
alreadyhistory, losing to Forest Park Road Runners (FPRR).
Obviously, they are back after stating in November that they were
retiring afterthe 1997 season. That's good!!! We look forward to
the competition this year. It will keep us at the top of our game
and they aregood long distance runners.
One of my goals is to" have 50+ members for the 50's. If you've
passed that half-century mark, you WANT to join THEteam and be a
part of the victory this year?! We train together at the pumphouse
on Saturdays, FDR Park throughout the week, and atthe Yorktown
track for speed workouts on Wednesdays during daylight savings
time. The team carpools down to the city on race daywhich is a lot
of fun, especially at the Club Team Championships with the
post-race party and war stories.
Give me a call if you are interested in our Veterans team, the
Masters, or the Open, (914-248-6063). I look forward tohearing from
you. This year, we wamt to field a strong NYC Marathon team. In the
past, the marathon has been our weak link. Let'snot let it do us in
like it did last year. Group training and support are key!
As always - Run well,. Stay healthy. And I'll talk to ya at the
next race!!

Defrosting At The "Freezer Fives"By Barbara Br if (an
The 'Treezer 5's" failed to live up to their name, as balmy
sunshine and mid-40 degree temperatures welcomed recordturnouts for
the two race series at FDR Park. Luis Francisco led a field of 135
runners to the 5K finish on February 8th in 16; 13,followed in
rapid order by Chuck Creel (16:48) and Greg Diamond (16:58). Emmy
Stocker, in great racing form less than threemonths after the birth
of her son, Ike, led a strong women's field from start to finish,
posting a 20:16. She was followed by CarolynDurst (20:50) and
Sherri Shultz (21:52).
Two weeks later, at the Freezer 5 Mile, both Francisco and
Stocker repeated their winning efforts with victories in 27:03
and32:41 respectively. Joining them on the victory stand were 17
year old Gilby Hawkins (28:19), and Mark Moynihan (28:33) on
themen's side, and Margie Katt (35:54) and Sherri Shultz (36:33)
for the women. Francisco and Stocker easily swept the overall
seriesawards for best combined times, which earned them each a

Many thanks to Club Fit and our other sponsors, including Pasta
Plus, Court Sports in Elmsford, and the WcstchesterBrewing Company,
who donated numerous product samples for all to try. Thanks, also,
to the legions of Taconic volunteers whohelped both races run
smoothly from start to finish. An extra thank you goes to Frank
Brittan for fresh baked muffins and cookies, ofwhich we could not
get enough. We'll be back for more next year!
Shorts were the "uniformof the day" for many atthe balmv Freezer

Opinions - About the past About the present.Where Have All The
Flowers Gone?
Back in the 70 s, the running boom was strong. Several runners
were making their way into Central Park to run in racesoffered by
New York Road Runners Club. From this group was formed the
foundation of Taconic, with the idea of creating a localclub,
specializing in home-town races, and showing the rest of the state
the beauty of Northern Westcheter and Putnam.
Our July 4th run was five or six years in existence. Started by
the local Knights of Columbus and named in memory ofFather Mooney,
who had been a priest at St. John's in Mahopac, it almost
immediately fell under the auspices of Taconic. NorthCounty News
lOK was founded, ditto Lincoln Hall, Lake Mahopac 5 miler (later
Debbie Schramm lOK), Titicus. and Skinners'for Sports lOK
(Chappaqua).
Other races quickly found their way onto the schedule: Boston
Alternative. Jan Peek, St. Patrick's Day Road Races,Guiding Eyes,
Somers lOK, the Manhattan to Peekskill Relay, and even a One Mile
Fly venture on Washington Avenue inPeeksk i l l .
(For variations, there were added 'attractions" such as Sybil, a
biathlon, a summer track series, handicap races, novelty
runs(doggie dash, town challenge, etc.), several cross country
ventures and some youth programs, but the road races above were the
heartand soul of the club.)
As these races developed, St. Patrick's was looked upon as the
opening of the road racing season and there was much to lookforward
to. But, as the man said, "The times they are a changing..
Lookmg at our 1998 schedule, after March, our Independence Day 8
miler is the only road race on the calendar of anysignificant
distance (Sybil not withstandmg). Seven of our most noteworthy
races (see bold type) have become only a memory ashave four others
(underlined). Our road racing season is peppered with 5K's. Is this
really what we have become"? Sadly yes Factan o n v e r b a . '
It's A New Season - And It's BeautifulIt s almost a new century.
The baby boomers are Masters and Veterans, and the heart and soul
of Taconic Road Runners,
ey are lookmg to their friends to keep them motivated. They are
looking to venues where they can test their mettle They
areanchoring teams, organizing races, putting on parties, sharing
training tips and responding to communities' racing wishes.Taconic
respects its roots, values its founders, and responds to its
membership. Having celebrated it's 20th anniversary it isnoteworthy
that some races started twenty years ago are still on the TRRC
calendar today. The 1997 Club Dinner Dance broughttogether members
from early days with members of recent ones. Attendance at club
meetings has swelled to remarkable numbersfectrnon verblr morning
training runs fill the parking lot near the pumphouse. FDR park
continues to be populated by runners -Tacomc is doing its share to
give local runners opportunites to run, train, compete, and party.
These opportunities continue0 be communicated m Taconic Running
Life - and are even more timely and prolific on the Taconic Home
Page. So if you're00 mg or a training partner, a place to tram, a
race distance to try, a team to join, good people to know - come to
a Taconic clubmeeting and introduce yourself. As the new millenium
approaches, it's a new season - and it's beautiful. Facta non
verba.

New York Road Runners Club NightBy Debra Kenney, Photos by
Joanna Nash
The place was the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center
on West 34th Street. It was the annual dinner dance(award ceremony)
for the New York Road Runners Club. The Taconics were well
represented. No small feat sincemost of us ran the Snowflake 4
Miler in Central Park earlier in the day, and then returned for the
dinner dance.
1997 was a great year for our teams and individuals. NYRRC
honors a runner of the year in each age category, male andfemale,
and an overall runner of the year. Well, the overall male runner of
the year for 1997 was our own Mike Salinsky! Mike is aworld class
marathoner and a delightful person. Congratulation. Mike. Greg
Diamond and Nick Caswell were nominees for runnerof the year m
their age categories. Both Greg and Nick are members of our men's
master team which won the NYRRC Grand Prix in1997 for the 5th year
in a row!
Although not formally recognized at the dinner dance, both our
men's and women's veterans teams placed second in thegrand prix,
and the women's masters placed third! It was a great night for our
club, and a wonderful evening for those of us whoattended.
Something you might want to put on your calendar for next year.
