144MH/432MHzLow Power Contests : l9th/20th fuly 1997

Wow! What a scorcher! The best wee, kends contesting weather I've sver hadl As you will gather sweral clulmeftbers decided to enter the RSGB l44MI{z Low Power Contest on lgth July and the 432MI{z Low Porrer Contern 20th July. ltrowever rattrer than the usual site at Mainslaughter Law we decided to retnrn to a site in DumfriesCralloway (IO84BT) which gave us great results in 1995.

Those taking part were GM0CLN, GM6VIU, CVtOtCf, GMTTf*A" MMIAVA and GMOBWU (my father) s(rn Friday l8th we all (orcep GM0BWU who stays in CaSle Douglas) set off at about lurrch time and headed flasfle Douglas where we had all arranged to meet. Late afternoon, after a few mix-ups, we wenfiElly all metGMOBWUs QT?I and then went !o the local camp site to pirch lents as 6VIU,0ICF,7TKA and 1AVA were campitbr the weekend.

fhe weather for camping, or contesting, couldn't have been better as there were clear blue skies and the temperatuwas in the mid 20s all weekend with only a very slight breeze giving arry kind of respite. Once the tents were pitchrLt vi'as offto the local chinese rgstauant for a lovely meal and then a suitable hostelry for a few drinks before we iwent to bed. It was a leisurely start on Saturday morning as ws were not dre to leave for the contest site until abot lam and the contest was due io start at 3prn. Twenty minutes later we arrived only to discover a padlock securing tlgate into the field which lod to the site. This was despite having already been given permission to use the sillortunately, a qurck inspection showed that it was simply a matter of lifting the gate off itr hinges and we conld gar3ntry. This was 10 be the norm for the rest of the weekend. We were soon on site and got to work setting up tlrntennas and the operatirtg tent. That was hot work thgugh and by the end of the day thers were sweral red armnecks and faces! Only the 144MIIz contest ran on the Saturday (3pm-1lpm local) with the 432lvtrIz event running t:he Sunday (9am-3pm local). The lfi4}iff,Iz contest began well but we werc soon experiencing rsceive problems. Tlrnly possible culprit was the masthead preamp so with minimum delay the three 14 element yagis were lowered ar;he preamp was bypssed From then on everything went smoothly and we had a relatively steady flow of contacnntil the end of the day.

Throughout the contest the antennas were turned on a regular basis to look for multipliers. This resulted inl few good contacts to Southern lreland (IO51), Southern England (JO00IIO90/IO80), Norftern Scotland (IO88) arirance (JO00). Bill GM0ICF had brought his SOMlIz equipment with him and set up his antenna once the 2m staticiver onenfinnel He ntnc.eerierl tn work cern'.rll G (}I GW rnrl (}M $etirmc cc fhe rhv nrosrcssei hrrt the hirrhliol

duly returned and we all re-charged our batteries! By the end of the 2rn contest we had managed 128 QSOs in 7@untries, 59 counties and 25 locator squares for a total of 35563km. This gave a grand total of 3236233 points. Allthe valuables were gatlrered into vehicles the tent was shut up for the night. As there w€re only a fw sheep in the fieldwe left the antennas (3 x 14 on 144MtIz and a 5 ele for 6m) in a vertical position and the 24 ele for 432MlIz, whichhad been prepared fsr the morning, standing on its stub mast against the adjacent wall. We all headedback to CastleDouglas and retired for the evening (some of us after a few beers @ moonlight in our pyjamas!).

At about 8am on the Sunday morning we all assembled at the camp site and once a couple of trips to the localshops had been sorted out we headed for the site again. As we approached the antennas were visible on the horimn butas we cleared the b,row of the hill in the field we saw a sad sight. Bills 5 elernent sOMlIz yagl was lying in a crumpledheap on the ground and several hllocks were mingling around close-Iry. The frrmer must have trrt them in the fieldfirst thing that morning and they had managed to relese one of the grry ropes securing the 6m antenna Anothercasualty was the 432Mffi2 yagi which had been used as a scratching post and as a result had several bent elements.Fortunately the tent and the 3 x 14 element pgis for l44Vfrlz were unharmed. The bullocks were chasod away fromthe immediat€ are and a qurck clear-up opention was canied oul All the elements on the 70cm beam straightenedOK however the plastic housing used to ses'ure one of the elernents on the 6m beam was split and would need to bereplaced. Otherwise the 6m beam was straightened and seemed to be relatively OK. The rotator, used on 2m theprevious day, was quickly remwed from the 2m setup and fitted tci'the 70cm mast with the yagi and stub mast above. The feeder was attached and the mast raised. Just the radio to connect now!! Unfortunately the threa& on the 70clnfeeder were damaged and it wasn't possible to connect the antenna to the radio. This meant that the 2m antennas hadto be lowered and the feeder taken ofr the mast so that it could be used on 70fln. A record ' pit-stop was called for andwe did a greatjob. In no time the T0cm antenna was again in the air and the radio connected. Offwe went! Contactson 70cm were also made on a fuirly regular basis, hrt not quite so regular as on 2m. We were soon onto our second logsheet though, and already had a few contacts to the south coast ofEngland.

The weather was again very sunny with only a slight breeze to give some relief and radio conditions were quitereasonable. However, by late morning a sea mist develo@ and that signalled the end of any reasonabb propagation.Fromthen on oontacts were few and farbetween and towards the endwe actual$ went for over an hour without a QSOat one point. Three or four more contacts in the log and a decision $as made to pack up early (b!' about 30 minutes).b this stage the 2m antennas had been dismafltled and returnod to Castle Douglas so that everything else aould thenbe dismanfled and loaded into the assembled cars. The final tally on 4321vft12 was 42 QSOs in 5 countries, 17 locatorsquares and 32 munties giving a distance total of I f 90Skm. The final score was therefore 643032 points. The best DXon 70cm was with GOFUV in JO0OCX at a distance of 506km. Once everything wits packed up we all retunred, inconvoy, to Castle Douglas before heading ofrin our own directions. Cambell and John went straight home to Tranentwhile I returned to my in-laws house (also in Castle Douglas) to load all the l44VfrIz antennas onto the car beforedriving home with Susan and Craig (rny wife and son). AIex had already decided to stay for another night on the campsite with Andrea, Louise and Emily (his wife and daughters) while Bill made a last minute decision to stay for anothernight too.

The weekend was (I gather) thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and was a gt?.atsucc€ss. I hope we can manage itagain sometime!

2m/6m Mobile Antenna

The cost of a 'special'antenna to cover the

above bands is in the region rf40 from the suppliers whadvertise in the magazines. ,recent snipet in RadCom su6gested that a 5/S 2m whiwould load up fine on 6m awell. it does.!

I purchased a commercial typtaxi whip with the wide loadin, coil and base for tl5. On 2rthe SWR is less than 1.4:l ovethe band and on 6m the SSIsegment SWR is 1.5:l and thtop end is 1.8:1. Not bad forbudget antewra.

So far I have workerGM,LA and OZ on 2m runnin1lOw mobile and on 6m l(countries throughout europe or40w. I run the antenna througla duplexer with outputs for 2nand 6m into the IC706. A goodperformer at a sensible price.Worth a try.
