PRESIDENT9S REPORT
The season has passed so quickly, with major achievements taking place, after such a
financial struggle in 1994/95.
Our major and most satisfying triumph of the season was the completion of our new
bunkhouse. After a number of years of planning and hard work, the members were
rewarded when the bunkhouse arrived from Newport TAFE, to be placed on location at
Wye River. Thanks to Shane O'Brien and Bruce Ferguson for the many hours they
contributed towards the Bunkhouse at Newport TAFE, and the Working Bee's some of
our members attended at the TAFE. The committee even held their meetings at
Newport during the final stages of completion. The cost of the bunkhouse went over
budget due to cartage costs, but it was worth it all and the members will have great
times using our new home away from home. The official opening is scheduled to take
place on the 20th January, 1995.
Our club was triumphant again, in finishing third in the state patrol competition. This is
a great achievement and thanks to Steve Rumble and others who assisted in
instructing our members. The reward for finishing third, is a new 25hp outboard motor
for our IRS. Patrols were good over the peak holiday season, then some members did
not attend at the end of the season.
Competition was high on the agenda with members this year, as we attended many
carnivals and won pennants throughout the season. Wye River won the restricted
carnival at Kennett River this year and the carnival pennant hangs proudly in our
clubrooms. Club championships had a change of date this year as an experiment.Special thanks to Kennett River for asslstinq us in the change of venue when the surf
was too unruly at Wye. IRB's gained enough points to compete at the Aussies in NSW
this season. Although they did not make the finals this time, the young ones gained
experience in realising what the big time is about.
Fundraisinq was down this year due to changes in government regulations concerning
Tin Rattles. Once we finally received the go ahead, the season had commenced and
we were depleted in numbers due to patrols. I would like to thank our members who
helped me with the cray raffles. This was a huge success and thanks to the hotel and
Valley Caravan park for allowing us to use their facilities for fundraisinq. Families of our
members contributed with the running of our barbeques at the clubhouse this season.
This also was a good money spinner for the club, so give yourselves a pat on the back.
Thanks to the Friend family for providing the club with the facilities to show movies
once again this season. This is a great facility, which has enabled us to increase our
family membership. Our 'Wing Ding' looked doomed when the heavens opened up on
us at Easter, but through quick thinking by our members, we changed the venue to our
new bunkhouse. This was an outstanding success and appears this could be the go for
future years. We raised nearly $2,500 this year, thanks to those who helped and
contributed, with prizes and catering arrangements.
Finally, I would like to thank my committee for the work that was achieved this year. Wehad some difficult times and disagreements when the kitty was low, but we stuck
together and reaped the rewards of the good times that occurred.

To Hazel, Mathew, Benjamin, Sarah and Rachel, I thank you for your support when it
was needed, and the times I failed to not realise other duties other than the club, I thank
you.
Let's all look to 95/96 season with high aspirations.
Rex Griffin.
SECRETARYVS REPORT
In season 1994/95 the club had a mixed year of fortune. On the plus side, the
completion of the bunkhouse came to fruition, due to a huge commitment by adedicated few. The club came third in the state patrol competition and competed at a
respectable level in both summer and winter, including the resurrection of a boat crew.
Generally around the club we have a new sprinkling of young members who have
enthusiastically involved themselves in all activities. The club has improved it's
relationship with various community groups and is in a position to launch into season
1995/96 with a justified expectancy of success.
The Wing Ding proved again, despite adverse weather conditions, to be a resounding
success and proved the versatility of the community hall in the new bunkhouse.
Unfortunately, the Tin Rattles and other fundraisers were down this season. The
problems encountered with councils etc. have been resolved and the club needs all
hands on deck this pre - season.
Sponsorship has also been difficult to obtain due to current financial markets. Our
thanks go to all those who generously supported the club and have done so for years.
This is one area we as a club need to explore further and all suggestions are welcome.
It is al! there for the taking if we put in both on and off the beach.
Discipline needs to improve, with leadership coming from senior members. I t is
necessary to support each other in a positive way and band around our club captain
and committee. Open communication is the key to a successful club, business or anyorganisation. All are welcome to attend committee meetings and may submit written
suggestions at any time.
Thank you for your support this season and good luck to Denis O'Brien the new
Secretary in 1995/96.
Michael Gurry.

CLUB CAPTAIN~S REPORT
After what has been an extremely difficult and trying season I can only look back now
and see positive results for the Wye River Surf Lifesaving Club. With an excellent
result in the state patrol competition, numerous pennants at both restricted and fullcarnivals, winning the Kennett River restricted carnival, an increase in awards gained,
the long awaited arrival of our bunkhouse and many enthusiastic young members, I can
only say that I am extremely happy with our position at this point in time.
My main objectives for the season were to raise the awareness of all active members to
their duties to the club, to raise the standard of patrols and to increase the strength and
qualifications of patrols. Although not all of my goals have been met, I am nonetheless
pleased with our progress. With several meetings being held over the course of the
season for both patrol captains and active members, I believe that everyone should
now be aware of their duties to the club and to their patrol. Whilst some people havecontinued to disregard these duties, I am extremely happy with the majority of our
members who have shown a willingness to become involved and to take on the spirit of
Lifesaving.
I saw the introduction of an intra club patrol competition this season as a necessary
incentive for an improvement in our patrols. Whilst I was not surprised by the teething
problems that resulted, it was good to see that those inspections that were completed
were carried out professionally and with a good response by the patrol under
inspection. In view of the lack of sufficient data with which to find the Patrol of the Year
the decision was made, through consultation with the executive committee, with various
patrol duties being taken into consideration. Hopefully, with this season as abenchmark we can improve on this competition over the coming seasons. One
outstanding result which shows our improvement in patrols was our third placing in the
state wide patrol competition with an aggregate score of 4095 points out of a possible
4200. Congratulations to all involved in these inspections.
After plans for a December Bronze camp fell through, mainly due to the bunkhouse not
being completed, I was concerned that our patrol strengths would be depleted.
However, thanks to the O'Briens for again introducing new members to the club and a
strong training program over January, we have managed to maintain the status quo. I
must thank Jason Cleary, Melissa Storey, Ben Storey, Aron O'Brien and Sally Agnew
for their continued support in training members. Congratulations also to all members
who gained awards this season.
The bunkhouse has proven to be a major headache over the season, both in the
logistics of it's completion and its use since its arrival at Wye River. I must first thank all
members who worked over the '94 winter to prepare the bunkhouse for completion and
who have continued this work since its arrival at Wye River. It seems however, that the
anticipation of this new facility and the excitement of being rid of our old building was
too much for some people who forgot certain rules of conduct required by the club.
However, by the end of the season most members accepted their responsibilities in this
area. It is important that all senior members set a good example while staying at thebunkhouse and are active in pulling into line any members or non members who
8/3/2019 1994-95 Annual Report
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/1994-95-annual-report 10/19
disregard bunkhouse rules. It is up to all members to protect our investment in this
building.
Unfortunately, it has been another disappointing year for fundraising. We threw away
two great opportunities by poor showings at the tin rattles and it has again been difficult
to find people to do crayfish raffles, The club has been actively seeking sponsorshipdeals over the past twelve months with many submissions being made. Our limited
success in this area means that the onus is on the members to provide income to
support our activities. There must be an improvement in this area over the coming
seasons.
Congratulations to all members who won pennants and medals at carnivals this season
and to all members who competed I congratulate on representing the club and raising
our profile within the Association. Your efforts are much appreciated and generate
valuable club spirit. Congratulations also to a/l winners and competitors in the club
championships, which has again proved to be an exciting event with our beach putting
on both the best and worst of conditions.
Finally, I would like to thank all members for their efforts and support over the season
and welcome everyone back for season 95/96.
Steve Rumble.
CHIEF INSTRUCTOR9
S REPORT
Although I only took on the position by default in November, the dub still ended up
having a successful year on the instruction and examination side, with everyone who
went for an award passing.
The club was to have had a Bronze Camp at the start of the season, however, due to
situations out of our control we were unable to continue with it as such. The 1995/96
season should see our first true Bronze Camp take place. Despite this the club still put
through two groups of Bronze Medallions.
The first group in November after training through the winter in Werribee. While we still
had the usual group trained and put through over January at the beach. Many other
awards were also gained by members over the summer, which was very encouraging
to see and will hopefully carry over into next season. In the 1994/95 season we did not
put through any I.R.S. drivers, but many started to train for it and are looking forward to
getting it before next season.

I.R.S. CAPTAIN~S REPORT
We started the season with one boat and two motors after the sale of our solid hulled
boat which had served us for many years. During the season we lost our second motor, which was damaged during a patrol and our boat was sent away to Queensland for
major repairs to the transom due to the effects of years of wear and tear. With the help
of Kennett River, who kindly lent us their second boat, we were able to continue to
patrol our beach with a boat. We would very much like to thank Jason Cleary who
helped us maintain the boat and motors during the season and Peter Gardner for his
support. With another on the way soon we are looking forward to the next season.
Ben Griffin Damon Barbante.
COMPETITION MANAGERS REPORT
This season saw Wye competitors at every carnival except one, gaining pennants at all
but a couple of these. Although we only scored one medal at the Vic's, 94/95 was our
most successful season for many years. Our year was topped off with a gold medal
from Mitch Anderson in the open 2km run at Fairhaven in tough conditions. We also
had great success at the Master's Victorian Champs at Lorne with Peter Gardner, Joe
Pannuzzo, Noel Curtin and Andrew Hack, winning a silver in the beach relay and Peterwinning a bronze in the beach flags. This year Shane represented Wye in the Otway
Dolphins and enjoyed competing against other districts in the state.
Congratulations to all pennant winners for the season, about 30 pennants in all, with
Christa bel Osmond having the most successful season for a female in the club for
many years. The boaties were great for the club this year. 1994/95 proved to be a good
learning experience for the crew, which was their aim for the season and we all hope to
see them in 95/96.
The Club Championships Were a success once again, although the conditions weren't
favourable. Thanks to everyone who persevered with the switch to Kennett River on theSunday due to heavy surf at Wye. Congratulations to all winners and placeqetters.
Thank you to everyone who competed this season. We all had a good time and hope to
see more next season.
Shane O'Brien.

Christabel Osmond, Andrea Barbante, Nicole Clarke, Damon Barbante, Ben Karnp.
Special thanks to Flick Nolan for her work in the water, rain, hai l or shine.
Thanks also to 'behind the scenes' work from Elizabeth Barbante, Neif Hancock and
the tremendous number of volunteers and supporters on competition day.
Four o f our Nippers were invited to attend a development camp at Mt. Eliza in March:
Jake Storey Rebecca Pierce
Braid Ewin Kate Shannon
They were instructed in all junior Lifesaving activities and had a ball.
Tony Shannon gave up his weekend and represented the club as an instructor, so our
juniors had a familiar face to look up to. Sincere thanks Tony for your efforts.
It is a concern that we find it difficult to attract and hold the interest of 11 - 13 year olds.
This year we must work to ensure we cater to Nippers of all ages.
Objectives for Summer 95/96 include:
Nipper reps at State Titles.
Wye reps at a Nipper Carnival.
Activities for Nippers throughout the Summer.
Seeing all of our Nippers back at Wye in '96.
