Volvo has always been at the very forefront of

passenger safety. It is a philosophy which spans

the total process from concept to aftersales care

` The basis for everythingwe do at Volvo is, andmust remain, safety andcare'. Gustaf Larson, Swed-ish engineer and co-founder

of Volvo, 1927.Volvo has been synonymous

with safety ever since. We havewon America's NationalHighway Traffic Administ-ration Award three times, among a wide range of inter-national safety awards. Manyof Volvo's own safety stan-dards have become legalrequirements all over theworld or prove more demand-ing than government legis-lation. UK law, for example, stipulates that every car mustbe able to withstand a 30mphhead-on collision. However,we insist on a 35mph

threshold because the extra5mph improves a car's abilityto withstand impact by afurther 36 per cent.

Each year, we spend a con-

siderable amount of time andmoney on research into carsafety. With the complexityof modern traffic a drivercannot always anticipatehazards. But carefully re-searched car design and en-gineering can minimise theconsequences of an accident.

We simulate hundreds of collisions each year at theVolvo Safety Laboratories,as well as studying thou-sands of road crashes.

Sometimes, the result of this research is a featurewhich provides the driverwith a way to avoid potential

accidents - active safety.Sometimes it is a more defen-sive feature, of vital import-ance should an accident occur-- passive safety.

The ability to acceleratequickly and smoothly, anti-lock braking and well-de-signed suspension systems in

terms of roadholding andhandling are all positive as-

pects applied to reduce therisk of an accident.

Every Volvo offers thesame fundamental protection:a rigid steel safety cage,computer-designed front andrear crumple zones, roll-overprotection b ar i n the roof andsteel bars in the doors. Inthe event of an accident they Jall absorb impact and deflectshock waves from the passen-gers. The collapsible steeringcolumn reduces the risk of chest injury to the driver andthe door locks are designed tohold the doors closed during

Comfort is an importantfactor (a comfortable driver is

always a safer driver). All theseats are body contouredand orthopaedically designed, and the front seats containl umbar support to ease strain

on the back; instrumentationi s clear and easy to read so thedriver's eyes need never leavethe road and thorough venti-

The 22-stage programmeof surface treatments, includ-i ng 13 coats of primer and

high-gloss paint, along withzinc-coating and resin appli-cation provides effective pro-tection against rust. It's no

wonder that the average lifeexpectancy of every Volvofrom Sweden we produce is20.7 years (Swedish govern-ment figures).

    The sophisticated catalytic

    converter designed to reduce

harmful toxic emissions by 90 to 95

per cent. Fitted as standard from

1991 model year on all new petrol-

    driven Volvos

Volvo has a long-standing tradition of extensive

research and development to use its technological

expertise for the benefit of the environment

More and more companiesare becoming aware of thedetrimental effects thatmanufacturing processes arehaving on the environment. But it is important that everystatement of good intent isbacked by a determined,long-term plan of action.Words and intentions areeasy. Actions are harder tocome by.

Volvo believes that a moreresponsible attitude towardsthe environment is the con-cern of every manufacturerand that is why the company

has always taken a lead inmaking cars that are environ-mentally cleaner.

Volvo's environmental re-search began in 1965 with the

development of emissioncontrols. Volvo was the firstto introduce a fully regulatedcatalytic converter for un-leaded petrol and to produceone which could meet thestringent requirements set byCalifornia in the 1970s.

At the UN EnvironmentalConference in 1972, Volvowas the first manufacturer todeclare its environmentalapproach by stating:`

Volvo does not wish to pro-tect the car at any price andunder all conditions. It is inVolvo's best interest that the

car is used in such a way as itdoes not cause environmentaldamage.'

More recently, Pehr G.Gyllenhammar, chairman of

    r

    CARING FORTHE FUTURE

    Volvo since 1971, stated:`

Volvo customers are very in-terested in the environmentali mpact of our cars. What weare doing certainly isn'tcharity, but fits very welli nto the overall aims of ourcustomers.'

Again, actions speak loud-er than words. Which is whyevery new petrol-drivenVolvo comes with a catalyticconverter as standard.

Furthermore, we are doingeverything we can to eradi-cate or reduce pollutantsfrom each stage of the pro-duction process.

For example, we haveeliminated CFCs from allfoam plastic used in seat-padding, and the same willsoon be true of harder foamslike those used in steeringwheels. We were the first

European car maker to adopta water borne paint systemthat reduces by 60 per centthe release of solvents intothe atmosphere and we be-came the first manufacturerto introduce a completely sol-vent-free underseal for corro-

    sion-proofing our cars.

    VOLVO HAS ADOPTED ASTRATEGY OF

ENVIRONMENTAL CAREIN EVERY PART OF ITS

    ORGANISATION

And now we are using nat-ural gas for heating our fac-tories, which cuts sulphuremissions by 90 per cent.

Volvo has adopted astrategy of environmentalcare in every part of its organ-isation and has developed aclear and carefully planned

agenda for the future. Ourplans include: replacingCFCs in all air conditioning;studying better scrappingmethods; continuing the de-velopment and use of envi-ronmentally friendly plasticsand car care products; further

radical solvent discharge re-duction; and more extensiveresearch into improving recy-cling methods.

However, more must bedone. As with all environ-mental matters, when it com-es to transport there must bea concerted effort. To quoteGyllenhammar: `We needmore investment in bettertraffic planning, cleaner engi-nes, better terminals and im-proved rapid transit system. The answer lies in a partner-ship between the public sec-tor and the car industry.'

Volvo's cars for the Nineties are

designed to be environmentallycleaner. But the company is

    continually seeking to improveenvironmental awareness

    throughout the car industry
