TACONIC RUNNING LIFE NOVEMBER, 1991 McGUIRE AND PETRONE TOP SOMERS LIONS CLUB lOK EIELD by: Melanie Benvenue The Somers Lions lOK Road Race has become a tradition over the past few years, held in conjunction with the Somers Lions Club Country Fair at the end of August. This year, the weather was merciful as Sunday, August 25th dawned clear and cool in contrast to last year's 90 degree temps early in the morning. Tara McGuire and Christopher Petrone topped the female and male fields in times of 37:31 and 34:05, respectively. In addition to the usual categories, special awards were presented to the first female and male Somers residents, Tara McGuire and Juan Kazgo. (Complete results are in this issue.) Since some area clubs sent teams to Central Park to compete in a club team championship, many of the local runners were missing. We hope to see them back next year. It was good to see some new faces in the winners' circle, too. Thanks to volunteers Linda and Paul Geppert, John Hallinan, Rich Adamski, Joe Porcaro, and Larry Lenihan. The Lions Club provided water stops, T-Shirts, split timers and trophies, so our role was t h e f a m i l i a r r e g i s t r a t i o n a n d fi n i s h l i n e r o u t i n e . P r o v i d i n g some amusement (probably unwittingly) for the volunteers were the "Carney" folks who seemed amused and puzzled by the runners and volunteers. Also, the finish line was right on a speed bump, r i g h t a f t e r w h i c h a w a t e r h o s e w a s s t r e t c h e d a c r o s s t h e c h u t e . Rich Adamski suggested a special award for "most graceful fall" of the day, but luckily no one fell, and the start will be adjusted next year to avoid a repetition of the "obstacle c o u r s e . " A p o t e n t i a l t r a g e d y w a s a v e r t e d b y v e t e r a n T R R C - e r Larry Lenihan. We realized at the crucial moment that we had not assigned a volunteer to start the race, and Larry stepped in and did the job. (Whew!) Melanie took the microphone for the first time at the awards ceremony, and although the general consensus was that she did well, she will be happy next year to relinquish this task to another volunteer. After the race and awards, many runners stayed to enjoy the great food, flea market, and rides at the fair. See you next summer!! Results on page 3.

In the "CARMELO IS ALIVE AND WELL" department, this was sent to us from our friends up north inDutchess County:

I was a participant in your (MHRRC) splendid"Dutchess County Classic" and I would like to relate toyou some rather interesting observations.

So here we are coming up on this water station and Iam racing well and keeping a strong pace in step with myracing buddy Ken Bennet and all of a sudden this carstarts beeping it's horn at some racers just a few stepsahead of me. And then this guy on a racing bike literallyand physically throws himself in front of the moving vehicle, discarding the bicycle. And then the driver takes aswing at this cyclist. Now things get going really seriouslyand I actually stop racing and pull up just short of the fistfight and recognize the cyclist as Carmelo. Never have Imet such an unselfish athlete to have sacrificed his bike, and placed himself in such danger for us "racers". Manyrunners, 1 am sure, have noted the license plate of the carwhich I still remember as DCM 753 (New York).

I have no way of letting Carmelo know that we appreciated his effort to detain this flagrant motorist. I hopehe was not loo badly injured and that his bike is repairab le .

Sincerely,N o r m K r a m e r1 : 5 0 : 3 9 h a l f

P r e s i d e n t ' s C o l u m nNovember is marathon month, By the time you readthis the 1991 NYC Marathon will be in the books,as will the Marine Corps. Marathon. We like topublish complete TRRC results of these events, soplease call me with your time and spare my eyesthe task of sorting through the fine print in theN . Y. P o s t .

November also marks my first anniversary as Prez.At this year's November meeting the followingincumbents wi l l be re-e lected s ince no nominat ionshave been received for replacements; EFt^, Prez;Melanie Benvenue, V.P.; Rich Adamski, Treas.;Laurie Simunek, Secty. That doesn't sound verydemocratic, but that's what happens. Membersshould keep in mind that there is a two- term l imi tfor the Prez. (Thank god!) so next year you've gotto come up with some one else.

We have a number of interesting events coming upin November and December. The last event of theX-C Series will be at Blue Mt. on Nov. 10,followed on the llfh by the "Thanks to the VETS"5K race at the Montrose VA Hosp. The Club'sAnnual Dinner Dance is on Friday, Nov. 8 atLombardi's, members should contact Rich Adamski, asap. TRRC members should take advantage of thereduced pre-entry fee for the Yorktown lOK, Nov.17. On December 1, there's the Cross CountryRelay, a truly unique event. Then there's theTRRC Great Weekend at Blue Mountain: On Saturday,Dec. 6, its the Holiday Party at Blue MountainTrail Lodge, and on Sunday, Dec. 7 we have boththe Couples Relay and the Two-Person Relayfollowed by TRRC's reknowned pancake breakfast.

In the next newsletter, I plan io print ano r d e r b l a n k f o r n e w c l u b T - S h i r t s . I h a v ereceived some suggest ions about th is over the lastfew months, but I would appreciate any additionalsuggestions regarding style, logo, color, etc. Atthis point, it seems that something similar to theKelly Green T with large lettered "TACONIC" on thefront with the triangular logo above and to theleft may be considered, however nothing is cast instone. Short? or Long-sleeve? or both?

In the "CARMELO IS ALIVE AND WELL" department, this was sent to us from our friends up north inDutchess County:

I was a participant in your (MHRRC) splendid'Dutchess County Classic' and I would like to relate toyou some rather interesting observations.

So here we are coming up on this water station and Iam racing well and keeping a strong pace in step with myracing buddy Ken Bennet and all of a sudden this carstarts beeping it's horn at some racers just a few stepsahead of me. And then this guy on a racing bike hterallyand physically throws himself in front of the moving vehicle, discarding the bicycle. And then the driver takes aswing at this cyclist. Now things get going really seriouslyand I actually stop racing and pull up just short of the fistfight and recognize the cyclist as Carmelo. Never have Imet such an unselfish athlete to have sacrificed his bike, and placed himself in such danger for us 'racers'. Manyrunners, I am sure, have noted the license plate of the carwhich I still remember as DCM 753 (New York).

I have no way of letting Carmelo know that we appreciated his effort to detain this flagrant motorist. I hopehe was not too badly injured and that his bike is repairab le .

by Laurie Simunek(Come on now Taconic men...be honest.,., stop head

ing...)FYI - There are many races in our area (and out of our

area) that have team categories in addition to individualage groups, overall winners, etc. I will try to put into thenewsletter advance notice of such races (or if you hear ofone, call me). Here is all you need to do to be on aTACONIC WOMEN'S TEAM (it's so simple)!1) Call Laurie Simunek (914)621-2329

a) so 1 can get a list of names of women who are interested and psyched to be involved with such ane v e n t

b) to tell me you will be going to a particular racewith a team category that was advertised in ourn e w s l e t t e r

c) to tell me about a race with a team category so Ican adver t i se i t i n ou r news le t te r.

2) Please purchase and proudly race in a Taconic Women's team singlet. Dan Caifrey's Super Runner's Shop isthe only store in the whole world that sells these singletsand he happents to be local! (What a coincidence!)

a) Service there is excellent - if he doesn't have themin stock, he or Pat will order one for you.b) It's a cool shirt to own anyway. It's great to warin any race (e.g. NYC Marathon) because it's greatto belong to a club, and your fellow club memberswill spot you.

3) You would also look great in hot pink shorts or tights(the hotter the better) to go with that Taconic singlet.

That's it! Easy, huh? It's a guaranteed fun time. If aparticular race's rule is only five people to a team, theywill take the top five Taconic women but we will stillALL run and ALL be considered a women's team. (Obviously, the only time there would be a race with a pred e t e r m i n e d w o m e n ' s t e a m i s l i k e t h eManhattan-to-Peekskill relay where there is a qualifierr a c e f o r t h a t t e a m . QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS - PART 1

Here are the first results of the questionnairefrom the last issue. As I go through my "in depth"analysis I will try to answer all of the questions thatcame in with the replies. I received 21 responses* fromour 500^ members,

I suspect that ^T/, is not statistically significant,so 1 offer up the results for what they're worth. However, I am told by an expert that the validity ofthe sample all depends on the standard deviation, andfrom what I know about our club members theirdeviations are plenty standard.

Question #1 (monthly meetings): SIX (17) havenever attended a monthly meeting, 20% Cf) didn't knowwhere or when meetings were held, 15% (3) suggestedthat a meeting be held after a Sunday race in the park. There was one (6%) complaint that we actually conductedclub business at the meetings, and another six percent(1) gave a really lame excuse for missing a meetingbecause of the NYC subway.

Please note that meetings are held on the secondWednesday of the month. From November 1991 throughApril 1992 the meetings will be at the VFW Post (notthe American Legion) on Veterans Road, Yorktown Heightsat 7;30PM. The next meeting will be on November 13.It is best to park your car out front on Veterans Road, then go around back and enter from the rear of the VFW,go past the pool table into the large meeting room, notIII" bor (■surprisingly). TRRC provides soda S beer atthe meetirtgs. Attending a TRRC monthly meeting is verysimilar to watching a US Senate confirmation hearing.

The May 1992 through September 1992 meetings willbe h«ld in Oowning Pnrk, Route 202, Yorktown, at thepavillion west of the tennis courts after the grouprun, starting about 7:00PM. More often than not wehave hotdogs, popcorn, chips, soda S beer (depends onhow late I leave work).

With regard to the suggestion about a meeting aftera race, I am considering holding the March 1992 meetingin FDR Park after the St. Patrick's Day races. We'lldiscuss this an upcoming meeting and let you know.

By ihe way, the date and place of monthly meetingsappears each month in the middle of tt>e last page ofttve newsletter under the membership renewal form andabove your address.

Question #2 (group runs): 53% (11) have neverattended a group run. 2VX. (5) didn't know where orwhen they were held. Of those who did know, two (10%)suggested Saturday morning as a better day, and anothertwo suggested a time later than 5:30PM. Two guys saidtfiey us"<J lo attend group runs, but recent fatherhopdhas interrupted their former Spartan routines. Someonecon?)lained that no one runs together or talks to eachother on the "group" runs. Oh, and tfre same responderwith the lame excuse for question #1 said she stopped

attending group runs because she moved too far away;she suggested Central Park as a nice place for a run(no comment).

The usual TRRC group run starts at 5:30PM fromDowning Park, the route takes us into FDR Park alongthe dirt road, out around the pool parking lot, thenloops around the park. Runners go as few as 3 miles oras many as 12 miles or more, with most running in the6-to-8 mile range. Pace varies. Typically an "A"group will scurry ahead while the rest of us watch fromthe "B", "C" or "D" groups. For anyone who hasn't cometo the park on a Wednesday night, you'll see runnerscongregating from 5:15PM or so, and if Harry is there, the run will start promptly at 5:30PM. Please step upand introduce yourself, then hop into the group, thepack will sort of naturally spread itself out accordingto pace. 1 usually make the Wednesday night runs, ifI'm not there you should see some other familar face. The number of runners at the group runs range from 10to 25 people, more in the summer, less in the winter. Also, in the fall, the starting point changes fromDowning Park to the FDR Park bus entrance (aboutmile west of Downing Park, off Rt. 202) after the timechange. (That will have occurred by the time you readthis.) The principal reason for the change is to avoidthe dirt road since it will soon be pitch black at5:30PM. When starting from the bus entrance, we godirectly into FDR park and stay on the paved roadwayfhe whole time. After you have become accustomed to ityou will be amazed at how well you can see the grayroad in the moonlight (sort of romantic, don't youthink). One note to remember: do not park within theconfines of FDR Park, the State Park Police toleraterunners (most of the time) in the park after dark, butnot cars. Parking outside the barrier in front of thePark Administration building at the bus entrance is OK.

There is an even less informal (or is thatformless?) group who run at Downing Park at 7:30AM onSaturday mornings. Since I haven't been there for sometime I can't personally attest to the viability of thatg r o u p .

Additionally, there are extremely informal groupruns which are thrown together on an ad hoc basis(usually at the Wednesday night runs) for long runs(marathon training) around the resevoir or other exoticl o c a l e s .

If you're really interested in keeping up withwhat's going on with TRRC, you should try to attendeither a group run or a monthly meeting. Thenewsletter is good at reporting what's happened, andinforming the members of upcoming events, but there ismore to TRRC than appears in these pages.

That covers the first two questions. I plan tocontinue with questionnaire results in the next issue.

My beloved wife Bekky and I took a motor vacationout west this past summer and on the way back westopped at the Zuni indian mission in Zuni, (about 25miles south of Gallup) New Mexico. We have been contributing to the mission for many years.

On entering the church office we encountered a slimyoung man (looked about 25) dressed in a t-shirt with a15K race logo. Of course, I had one of my many race t-shirts on also (1 wonder if I have any shirts without writing on them). Simultaneously we asked each other if hewas a runner. I lied a little and said I was, and he acknowledged that he ran also, but for a purpose.

He is the priest at the mission, which includes a schoolfor Indian children and all the attendant problems ofpoverty, homelessness, alcoholism, drugs, etc. He is responsible for all funding and the training of teachers fort h e s c h o o l .

In order to purchase a sorely needed hew bus for theschool, he collected pledged and ran the Duke City(Albuquerque) Marathon on September 29 and finishedin 3:48:16 (which is at least three hours faster than I couldhave done it were I so inclined) - #198 out of 419 runners. To make a long story longer, Father Dale Jamison hadto arise at 4:00am each day to train for this formidablechallenge. His response after he fuiishcd: "I'm alive andI'm still 44. 1 finished it, but believe me, I paid the consequences."

He was pledged $36,000 of the $40,000 needed for thebus and he did i t a l l for

We've put together our calendar for 1992, but there's one thing missing- Weneed YOU!!!!!!! Thatt's right, TRRC needs people to help at registration, waterstops, traffic control, timing, finish line, scoring, distributing flyers, etc.DON'T BE INTIMIDATED - these jobs aren't brain surgery (and even if you screw-upwe can cover it up), but they are VITAL to us. Our schedule for '92 has 20 TRRCsponsored races and 9 TRRC sanctioned races. That's a lot of races, and onlyBob Hermesch runs ALL of them, so why don't you plan to volunteer in 1992.

W O M E N ' S T E A M R E P O R TCLUB TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP FIVE MILE RACE - CENTRAL PARK

by Laurie Simunek

At five AM my alarm went off and I lay there wondering if anyone would notice if I didn't show up to run thisteam race. I wondered i f the two other runners I was

supposed to pick up and drive to Rocky's Deli wouldnotice if I never picked them up. I had had the sameconversation with myself (at the same hour) the morningof the Manhattan-to-Peekskill Relay and decided - yes, they might notice.

I was happy it wasn't raining and even happier it wasa comfortable cool temperature. But, then again, it's always cool in the middle of the night! I picked up mypassengers, met about twenty other Taconic runners atthe deli, and we were off to Central Park.

This team race was not as scary as the relay because itwasn't a relay - everyone (men and women) starts at thesame time. After warming up (and waking up) theTaconic Women's Team of Nancy Laun, Stacy Smith,Joyce Meyers, Colleen Law, Sarah Stahr and myself toedthe line with eight other women's teams and we were off.Joyce jumped out into an early lead among our women'steams and looked strong and smooth. I figured her dedication to the Wednesday night track workouts was obviously paying offl However, along with track workoutsmust come some distance runs as well, and Joyce toldme that lately she only had time to do about 25 miles perweek. Stacey and I gradually gained on Joyce and got byher at about the two-mile mark. Stacey was running soeasily (that's youth for you) that I knew I couldn't staywith her much longer. (Not to mention that I wasbreathing like Darth Vader while her running looked effortless.) She puUed ahead and I wished her luck.

Quite soon after this, Nancy Laun came up beside meand strode past me too. Again - youth! Just wait until youguys are my age!

I could see Nancy and Stacey about 50 feet ahead ofme. It wasn't feeling so cool out anymore and the streetwas feeling harder and harder at each step. As I camearound the comer to the finish line I could hear my namebeing called. (I'm in the city - who knows me?) It was themembers of the Taconic Men's Open and Masters teamsalong with Nancy and Stacey cheering me on! What agreat feeling! Nancy was first among the Taconic womenand 24th overall with a great time of 34:20. Stacey cmisedin at 34:22 (25th). Hey - are you guys really going to name the babyI m a ?

Taconic women's team finished fourth and we werethrilled. (Each team's place is determined by summing upthe overall places of the runners on the team.) Warren

Street women made a clean sweep of the field by earninga p>erfect 15 points for their top five places overall.Westchester was second with 66 points. Plainview/ OldBethpage came in next with 95 points. Taconic wasfourth with 141 points. NY Harriers, Front Runners,Millrose and Astoria Park TC rounded out the field.

The Taconic Club's enthusiasm and spirit were highand it was a wonderful time! Congratulations to theTaconic Men's Open (6th place) and Masters (1st place)teams. We're proud of you! And thanks to all who cameto cheer us on. As with the Manhattan-to-Peekskill relay,it was well worth getting up early for.

NYRBC CLUB TBAH CHAKFIONSHIP8/25/91, Central Park

THE DUTCHESS COUHTY CLASSIC9/15/91, Happingers Palls

TRRC sent 26 aeabers coaprising 3 teaas to the 1991Club Teaa Chaapionship. The Taconics caae awaywith a first, a fourth and a sixth place.

The Hens Hasters teaa was led by Bob Heraesch whoturned in an awesoae 26:45 for the 5ai loop ofCentral Park. Pollowing Bob were: Mike Daley,Scott Abercroabie, Pete Corsino, Howie Bashant &John Mauritz. TRRC's first place finished toppedsuch powerhouse teaas as West Side Y, Hillrose, andHestchester RRC.

With a last ainute change of singlets, Nancy Laundonned a borrowed Lori Jorgensen Taconic racingvest and led her teaaaates, Stacey Siith, LaurieSiiunek, Joyce Hyers, Colleen Law, and Sarah Stahrto a strong fourth place finish in the open woaen'sdivision. In this division. Warren St totallydoainated, sweeping 1-5 positions. Our TRRC woaenheld their own knocking off tough teaas such as NYHarriers and Hillrose, not to aention FrontRunners.

The Mens Open teaa benefitted by pack runningthrough lost of the race which enabled thea toplace all of the TRRC scorers within a reasonablytight range. Francis Burdett, hot off his win atDebbie Schraaa, again led the way in a torrid 25:27(13th overall, that's 5:05 a aile, folks). Twentypaces back was Nike Stahr in at 26:08. Then theflood of nine Taconics who caae in between 27:00 -28:00 (including Master Hike Daley). TRRC wasinitially awarded third place, but later wasdropped to sixth due to official error. The pointspread between 3rd & 6th was very close.

In all there were 333 coapetitors representing 17club teaas. He should all take pride in theaccoaplishaents of our TRRC club racers.

P.S: On 10/20/91 TRRC coapeted as a club at theHRC/Venture 5K at Rockland State Park. The Hen'sOpen teaa placed second (behind a Kevin Hynne ledHestchester teaa), our AWESOME MASTERS teaa againdeaolished the coapetition for first.Unfortunately, our Hoaens teaa was one person shy, therefore didn't score, although Mary Tolson tooksecond in her age group.

P.F.S.: a good tiie was had by all.

Over 70 Taconics ventured up to Wappingers Palls toparticipate in the preaier event on the Hid-HudsonRoad Runners calendar. The DCC is actually threeraces: 5K, Half-Marathon, and Marathon very ablydirected by Charlie Sprauer.

Mid-Hudson again showed they are great hosts, andeven the rain towards the end of the larathondidn't daapen spirits auch.

There was an incident, however, which aight haveturned into soaething really ugly, if not for thecourageous act of of TRRC's own Caraelo Roldan.

Soaewhere along about the 7-8 aile nark of therace, a car caae zooaing along auch too fast, andstraight down the aiddle of the road. Proa ayposition off to the right side of the road I couldsee runners in front scurrying to either side.Shouts of "Slow down, asshole!!" could be heardf r o a a l l d i r e c t i o n s .

I later learned that a short tiae after the carpassed ae, the incident caae to a head. Caraelo, nursing injured knees, was cruising the course onhis bike. He spotted the notorized jerk, anddecided to take action. He rode his bike directlyin front of the car forcing it to stop. Words flewfirst, followed by fists. Eventually order wasrestored, and after a trip to the town policestation agreeaent was reached that no charges wouldb e fi l e d .

What's soaewhat disconcerting is that the loosecannon behind the wheel of that car turned out tobe a local cop, obviously not auch of a credit tothe force. On the other hand, as aany of you know,Caraelo is a retired NYC police officer, and iscertainly a credit to TRRC, and the NYC PoliceDept.

Charlie Sprauer sent ae a note asking for Caraeloto assist with traffic control next year. I toldhia as soon as Caraelo's knees feel better he'staking up shadow boxing so he'll be in shape forthe 1992 DCC.

See TRRC results elsewhere in this newsletter.

by Scott Aberc/ombieOn September 22, Taconic Masters ran Long Island's

52-mile 8-man Ocean-to-Sound Relay. This is a big eventwith over 130 open, women's and masters' teams and agreat party afterwards. Scott Abercrombie, blessed by theabsence of Hartford's perennial lead runner A1 Swenson, eked out a lead on the other masters' teams. Relative teampositions remained unchanged during Mike Daley's andPete Corsino's legs. Mike trounced the rest of us old guysin this year's summer track series, and Pete held Hartfordin check by running the identical time as their runner. JoePorcaro sped off to a 30-second lead over Hartford, buthe never saw the microscopic arrow directing him left ata fork early in his run, and the individual directing trafficat that point never called to Joe to get him back oncourse. In the masters' competition we dropped 7-1/2minutes behind Hartford, 5-1/2 minutes behind RunnersEdge from Long Island, and 3-1/2 minutes behindM i l l r o s e f r o m N Y C . O u c h ! off to support our ruimer instead of dallying at thechange-over, this would not have happened.

No one had delusions of catching Hartford, but thirdplace was a possibility. Our next runner, Gary Murcke,

started to close the gap. We don't see Gary all that oftenbecause he lives on Long Island. New Taconic membersmight not know that he won the first NYC marathon andstarted the chain of Super Runners Shops. Bob Hermeschhas been consistent as well as faster than the rest of us,so we stuck him on the sixth leg with all the hills. TheMillrose runner he was closing in on was Norb Sander, another NYC mara thon w inner. N ick Caswe l l ran ourseventh leg and passed Willie Kaye to put us ahead ofMillrose. Nick, a I:50's half-milcr in the late 60's used torun for Mid-Hudson Road Runners. He recently joinedTaconic after buying a house in Peekskill. John HollandreUshes the anchor leg. Last year he narrowed a 2-minutelead by Hartford to 20 seconds, and this year he openedup a 4-minute lead on Millrose clinching our third placefi n i s h .

The weather was perfect, and everyone ran well; so itwas a great day...besides, we get another chance atHartford on November 30 at the masters XC nationals inB o s t o n .

Members of the TRRC Masters team. Gary Murcke is missing - well, not really missing, justmissing from the photo.
