- in other words, hardly at all . With the help of Despina . theladies' maid. he lays his plot. First he tells them that theirlovers have been called up for duty; then he introduces them totwo Alban i ans. who are. of course, none other than Gug 1;elmo andFerrando . After many inner confl lets the hlO women succumb to theadvances of the "Albanians", forcing Guglielmo and Ferrando to

20th CENTURY MUSIC: A CUL DE SAC? • •OR A NEW MORNING?
A. INTROOUCTION
B. SOME PREMISES1. Music in Western Civilization has evolved on a curve of
increasing complexity: (Particularly harmon ic and formalareas)
2. Contemporary Mus;c has always gained in the attention, interest &love of music loving public of every centuryexcept the 20th cen tury.
3. A comparison of two points of view:a. Nicholas Slomnimsky :The non acceptance of the
unfamiliar . If you become familiar, you'll love it .Beethoven got the worst reviews of anybody .
b. Henry Pleasants : The 20th Century is a cul de sac . Thonly viable 20th Century music is jazz and that whichhas come from it .
4. Schonberg's jump from tonality to atonality is the mostconcentrated and radical change in music 's ev olution .
C. SOME QUESTIONS1. Is 80 years of listening long enough to love atonality?2. Of what does the 20th century music schism really consist?
a. All major agencies of musical thought (schools, critics , literature) promote atonality BUT
b. The majority of music loving public not only doesn'tlike it , it avoids it , and frequently is belligerent .
3. What is the real reason the atonal style and musicallanguage is the first contemporary language in a thousandyears to lose the music loving public? THIS IS AN IMPORTANTQUESTION. IT NEEDS A SOLID SUBSTANTIVE ANSWER . ONLY YOU THE
MUSIC LOVING PUBLIC CAN GIVE THIS QUESTION THE CLEARARTICULATE ANSWER IT NEEDS .
