Spray Finishing Problems and Prevention Spray Gun ... Its Care and Operation Being proficient with a spray gun is the mark of the professional painter. It takes practice to be an expert, but understanding a few fundamentals will shorten your practice period.

A spray gun is a precision instrument that turns a liquid, by means of air pressure, into very tiny droplets (spray). Adjustments are easily made to change spray patterns (dry, normal or wet spray) to help shading of colors, or so that the sprayed material will not run or sag.

Adjusting The Spray Gun Adjustments for normal conditions start as follows:

1. Close Fluid Adjustment (B) completely

2. Open Fluid Adjustment (B) — a. Halfway for small spot repair b. Fully for panel or overall repair

3. Close Air Adjustment (A) completely

Estimated Air Pressures At-The-Gun

4. Open Air Adjustment (A) a. Halfway for small spot repair b. Fully for larger areas

Pulling the trigger halfway opens the air valve. Pulling the trigger all the way opens both the air valve and the fluid valve.

Air Pressures

Air pressure instructions are based on at-the-gun pressures. While the

dial at the regulator indicates air pressure, there is a drop in air pressure at the gun, the amount of which is affected by the size and length of hose, snap hose connectors and hose conditions. For a close estimated at-the-gun pressure, this table may be used.

Testing The Pattern Follow label instructions for mixing paint and then strain it into the cup. Aim gun at a clean piece of paper for one quick, full pull of the trigger. If pattern is wet, increase the air pressure several pounds. If pattern is too dry, either reduce the air pressure or open the fluid valve a bit.

Correcting Distorted Spray Patterns

Spray pattern normal

A. Normal Spray Pattern Gun is in proper adjustment and held at the right distance from work.

B. Split Spray Pattern 1. Atomiiing air pressure may be too high. Reduce pressure by slightly closing Air Adjustment (AI. 2. Material may be too thin. Open Fluid Adjustment (13) a bit. At the same time, adjust Air Adjustment (A) to reduce width of spray.

C. Fan Spray Pattern Atomizing air pressure is too low. Increase air pressure by opening Air Adjustment (A).

D. Crescent Spray Pattern Air passage is restricted through Wing Port (H). To correct, clean Wing Port with thinner. Do not use metal instruments.

161ZE CLEARCOAT Guide to Complete Refinishing

(Acrylyd Acrylic Enamel Basecoat/Clearcoat System) 1 Wash and rinse the vehicle. Allow to dry and solvent clean.

2 Inspect the old finish — if cracked or crazed, remove it.

3 Sand with Random Orbit sander with #240 treated sandpaper.

4 Treat all bare metal with either MET-L-MATE or DUAL ETCH, depending on the metal.

5 Spot surface with Combo primer-surfacer. For complete surfacing, use E3 A 4801 Enamel Surfacer.

6 Seal with one coat of Jet Seal primer reduced 100% with R4 K 179. Dry times: — 1 hour above 70°F

— 2 hours below 70°F

7 Reduce the basecoat 75% (3 qts. per gallon) with Acrylyd reducer selected for your shop temperature. Add Polasol to the thinned basecoat at a rate of 1 pint per gallon or 4 oz. per quart of unreduced basecoat. Potlife is 6 hours.

8 Apply two to three light coats of color, allow at least 20 minutes flash between coats. Apply only enough basecoat to achieve hiding and color uniformity. The basecoat does not need to be glossy. Maximum film thickness of basecoat is 2 mils.

Dry times before clear: — 2 hours above 70°F — 16 hours below 70°F

Force dry: — 1 hour at 140°F

9 To one quart of V2 V 298 Clear, add 2 oz. of Polasol. If more flow is needed, add Universal Retarder R7 K 6251. Orange peel can be reduced by adding up to 25% Acrylyd reducer.

10 Apply two medium wet coats of clear allowing 15 minutes flash between coats. Allow the clear to dry 16 hours before delivery. Do not force dry the clear. Maximum film thickness of clear is 1.5 mils.

Tips: Use only V3 K 780 The Leveler' additive in both the basecoat and the clear to kill fisheyes.

To minimize dirt, tack off each coat of basecoat and clear.

After an overnight dry, the clear can be sanded with 600 paper and water to remove surface dirt. Do not use a coarse rubbing compound for bringing up the gloss.

Caution: Do not use this system at metal temperatures below 55°F. A positive pressure air-supplied respirator (TC 19C NIOSH/M ESA) is recommended. If available, use vapor/ particulate respirator which respirator manufacturer recommends as effective for Isocyan-age vapor or mist.

Spray Finishing Problems and Prevention Spray Gun ... Its Care and Operation Using The Spray Gun

It is very important to hold the spray gun at a proper distance—with lacquer about 6 to 8 inches away, and with enamel about 8 to 10 inches. For a dry spray, move the gun back. For a wet spray, move the

• gun in closer than normal.

Hold the gun straight on and move it parallel to the surface for each pass. Do not arc the gun, except to blend a spot repair.

Keep the gun moving at a steady pace and release the trigger at the end of each pass.

Overlap each pass by keeping the nozzle for each succeeding pass level with the lower edge of the

previous pass. The last pass should be made with one-half of the spray pattern below the surface being painted.

Along with three types of coats —light, medium and heavy — there is a very light coat called a dust coat. This is achieved by a quick pass.

Also, there is a mist coat as a help at times to level the final coat and melt in any overspray. A mist coat is mostly a slow drying thinner with a little color added, rather than a spray technique.

Care Of The Spray Gun

After using the spray gun, clean immediately. Pour in the cup a small amount of solvent compatible

with the material used and spray through the gun. Repeat several times, then wipe the parts clean.

Thinners destroy the lubricants in the packing. Therefore, do not immerse the gun in a thinner.

Packings should be kept pliant by occasional oiling. The packing nuts should be tightened with fingers only.

A drop of light oil applied daily will keep the air valve stem lubricated.

Keep the air vent in the cup lid open and free of accumulations.

Caustic alkaline solutions destroy aluminum alloys. Use a recommended gun cleaner.
