and symbol of 40 years’ hard work.

We don’t know how Fausto Marinello came up with the idea of

turning a lathe around and revolutionizing

the world of machine tools. Perhaps his inspira-

tion came from a distant memory, from when as

a child he would watch the world upside down

doing a handstand, or when he was at school,

studying Copernicus. Or perhaps it was from the

years he spent watching a spindle turn, nagged

by a stubborn itch to improve on convention by

turning it on its head. Wherever it came from,

the idea emerged and became the

core strength of Famar, the pride

LIVING & BREATHING M E C H A N I C S No better motto exists to begin THE STORY OF FAMAR’S

FIRST 40 YEARS. It is a motto that Fausto Marinello

himself often uses to describe the lot of someone

who has always lived for and among machine tools.

Fausto started working at the age of 14 at theMagnadyne factory, building radios and televisionsets.At50kilometersfromhome,hewouldtraveltoworkeverydaybytrain,bus,andonhis“owntwofeet.” Itwasn’tmechanics,butthenat16yearsofagehewenttoworkattheFiatfactoryinAvigliana.Therehis imagination would run wild, sparked by theamazing machines to be serviced, sent from theU.S.A.undertheMarshallPlan. THE SACRA DI SAN MICHELE. FOUNDED BETWEEN 983 AND 987 ON A ROCKY OUTCROP OF MOUNT PIRCHIRIANO, THE ABBEY LAY ALONG A 2000 KILOMETER-LONG PILGRIM ROUTE STRETCH-ING ACROSS WESTERN EUROPE, FROM MONT SAINT-MICHEL TO THE SANCTUARY OF MONTE SANT’ANGELO SUL GARGANO.THE CRYPT WAS BUILT IN THE EARLY 11TH CEN-TURY ALONGSIDE AN ANCIENT SEPULCHRAL CHAPEL, AND A FEW DECADES LATER WAS PLACED UNDER BENEDICTINE RULE. THE ABBEY WAS PRO-GRESSIVELY DEVELOPED AND EXPANDED TO HOST PILGRIMS AND PROVIDE ASYLUM TO THE LOCAL POPULATION.THREE CHURCHES WERE ERECTED IN QUICK SUCCESSION, THE LAST DESIGNED AND BUILT

BY GUGLIELMO DA VOLPIANO BETWEEN 1015 AND 1035.THE MOST AMBITIOUS SECTION OF THE MA-JESTIC ABBEY WAS ADDED BY THE ABBOT ERMENGARDO, WHO HAD THE IMPRESSIVE BASEMENT BUILT. FROM THE FOOT OF THE SUMMIT, IT RISES TO THE PEAK, PROVIDING THE FOUNDATION FOR THE NEW CHURCH HE BUILT. THE 26 METERS OF THE BASEMENT TOGETHER WITH THE APSES RAISE THE TOP OF THE COMPLEX TO 1000 METERS ABOVE SEA LEVEL, FROM THE 960 METERS OF THE SUMMIT.AN AGE-OLD ICON OF STRENGTH AND TENACITY, THE SACRA DI SAN MICHELE IS THE MONUMEN-TAL SYMBOL OF THE PIEDMONT REGION.

DEFYING CONVENTIONFrom 1980 to 1992, FAUSTO and his team focused on

the construction of specialist machines and servic-

ing. Their success took them to all the Fiat Group’s

factories around the world, from Italy to France,

to Poland and Germany, and as far afield as Brazil.

THINKING BEYOND With the launch of the Ergo line, Famar began expand-

ing its range progressively to cover new types of ma-

chines, while consolidating its name as a leading special-

ist in tailoring products to customers’ specific needs.

OneofthefundamentalfeaturesofFamarma-chinesisthattheyare70% standardized, with the rest “made to measure” on the basis of the part to be machined and the work cycle required by the customer. OvertheyearsFamarhasgrownrapidly, withanoverriding focus on research and development in-volvingeverypartofthecompany,andreflectedinthelargenumberofinternationalpatentsfiled. In just a decade, the company’s factories ex-panded to four in number,andabranchwassetupinGermany.Thedriverbehindsuchfast-pacedgrowthlay in another intuition of Fausto Marinello and histeam:thatmachine tools should be sold as part of a complete production system for machining piec-es, and not on their own. Famarmanufacturesprimarilyfortheautomotivesector, including car makers and manufacturers oftrucksandtractors,aswellasgearandpumpmanu-facturers. In thesesectors, thebig industrialgroupsgenerally seek fully assembled and tested produc-tionlinesthatarereadyforservice,forwhichFamarisanidealsupplypartner. Toensurethattheseturnkeysystemshaveallthetechnologicalguaranteestheyneed,Fausto decided to set up Famar Automations, theGroupcompanyfocused on the design and manufacture of pro-duction line components that connect machinetoolsandenablecontinuousmachining. Working in the shadow of the Sacra di SanMichele is a constant encouragement for taking on new challenges.ForFamar,thismeansneverne-glectingto“thinkbeyond.” This was the instigator for a new project thatcame from a simple production consideration: ona normal lathe, no matter how modern, changing tools is an inevitable waste of time.

Statistically it was cal-culated that that wasteof time accounted for10–15% of annual ma-chiningtime. The“brains”atFamartherefore decided toinvent the concept of“infinite” machining, raising the curtain onInfinity, the world’s first lathe to change tools without interrupting machining, andaddinganotherinternationalpatentto the company’s collection. Infinity not only con-firmed Famar’s competitive edge, but took it intonewworldmarkets. InrecentyearstheGrouphasexpanded with Fausto Marinello S.r.l., a company set up with akeynewmission:todesignandmanufacturehori-zontal machining centers, another smart insightforhigh-precision,high-outputmachines—machinesdestined forbigmanufacturers, whicharealwayssoldasturnkeyproducts. A FAMILY AFFA IR There are people at Famar who have been there

a lifetime; others who have gotten their ca-

reers off to a great start. Men and women who

shared those early times with Fausto Marinello,

and since then have become part of what

they are all convinced is “one big family.”

MARIA CLARA PIOVANO, Financial ManagerHaving joined Famar in 1978, Maria Clara Piovano has spent her entire career with the company, sharing in its administrative history—from the very first bills of parcel, written on carbon paper, and quotes punched out on the old typewriter, to the latest business intelligence software; from the first, hard-earned jobs of a small mechanics workshop to the hefty sales figures of an international group.Looking back at Famar’s growth over the years, she remembers a young lady who met many good people along the way—people who shared their knowl-edge and taught her many important things. But she also sees the sacrifice that underpinned the success the company enjoys today, and how important it is to consolidate so as to move on to new goals. For Maria Clara, working at Famar is like being part of a family, like playing for your favorite team: a daily commitment in which successes are always shared with the entire group.

BRUNO SANDRONE, Technical Dept. ManagerStruck by Fausto Marinello’s dynamic personality from the very start, Bruno Sandrone has worked with him since the 1980s on the design and engineering of Famar machines. He was there for the Ergo revolution, a firm believer in an idea that initially seemed insane. Fausto and Bruno are complementary—what the former conceives in his mind, the latter puts down on paper, accomplishing the re-sults clear for all to see.For Bruno Sandrone, Famar is a family to which he has dedicated, and contin-ues to dedicate, time and energy, helping to fuel the determination not to give up in the face of adversity, which so distinguishes the company.

BEATRICE MARINELLO, Sales DirectorAfter graduating from university, she joined her father’s company, working her way up from the bottom, first as a Famar sales clerk and then in Germany in the offices of the sales agent that in the first decade of the millennium helped open up the German market. It was a valuable experience for Beatrice Marinello, leaving her with an excellent command of the language and in-depth knowledge of a very demanding market. In those years she also honed her skills in approaching and dealing with customers, making her mark as a woman in what is very much typically an all-male sector. When she later took over the reins of the Sales Office, her experience helped raise the technical and organizational standards of Famar, while spearheading the success of the company’s products in tough markets such as China, Russia, America and South Korea.Needless to say, for Beatrice Marinello Famar is a family twice over. MAURO MARTIN, System and Service ManagerIf there is anyone who knows how to work and fix a Famar machine, it is with-out a doubt Mauro Martin. He joined Famar in 1987 when he finished school and was soon taken not only by mechanics, but by computers and software. He gained key experience on our first PLC projects, on numerical control systems, and on electromechanical design. Whether it’s electrical, electronic, fluidic or hydraulic, anything that moves a machine has no secrets for Mauro Martin.Mauro helped program the first ever Ergo. Since then he has travelled to every corner of the planet, to wherever a Famar machine or production line is installed. He is also responsible for training the new generation of technicians who install and perform maintenance on Famar Group products. He, too, is one of the family.

SABINA BARRO, Purchasing ManagerSabina Barro joined Famar in 1991, initially to substitute a person on maternity leave. Twenty-two years later, she is still with the company.Over the years she has moved her way up from receptionist to become Purchasing Manager for the entire Famar Group, sticking with Famar as it transformed from being a single customer business to the industrial force it is today.Like Maria Clara Piovano before her and Beatrice Marinello after, Sabina had to assert herself in a typically all-male world. It is not hard to imagine the reaction early on at meetings when as a young lady she would present her-self as head of Purchasing. But this is another aspect of Famar, the way Fausto Marinello wanted it to be: a workplace where the primary emphasis is on expressing one’s capabilities and talents.

FEDERICO MARINELLO, Engineering DirectorFederico Marinello first stepped into Famar as a ten year-old boy, eager to see the place that so absorbed his father by day. Infected by that same enthusiasm, he would spend his summer vacations in the company. After finishing school he began learning the ropes of machine tool pro-gramming, continuing his training in various factories around the world, where Famar machines were installed. Key technical and personal growth came with experiences in the United States and Germany, where he gained an in-depth understanding of the technological world of machine tools, both those of Famar and of other manufacturers. As Engineering Director, Federico leads a team of 12 project managers, mechanical system designers and detail designers, forming the fulcrum of an innovation process that has led Famar to become a key player on the market.

THE IDEA IS WORKFausto Marinello has a very precise idea of work

as human endeavor. As Famar has grown, he has

pursued a very specific mission of creating op-

portunities for both the company and people.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

16/17

Unsurprisingly perhaps, excluding the smallfounding core of people, the average age at thecompanyisbelow35years. “Training” is a first and constant principle. “Knowledge” is fundamental. Thisiswhysuchanemphasisisplacedontrain-ingandlearning,withcoursesprovidedto improvelanguageskills(EnglishandGerman),computerskills,andtechnologicalknow-how. Moreoftenthannot,wearedealingwiththepro-ductionofhundredsofthousandsofperfectlyinter-changeablepieces,withtolerancelevelsmeasuredinthemicrons. The philosophy at Famar is to look beyond theindividualpiecetobemachinedandprovide a solu-tion for the complete production process. Famar’sTechnicalDept.buildsthemachinetoolstarting from the technical drawings for the piece, calculating first off the cycle time required—the key factor dictating the rest, as Fausto Marinello always says. Like a tailor making a suit to measure, Famardevelopsspecificsoftwareforthemachineandpro-gramsit forthepiece, preparesconformitytestsonthecustomer’sstandards, andcustomizes lathesonthebasisof theelectrical standardsand logisticsoftheproductionline. Nothingislefttochanceintheengineeringandconstruction of machines, with the customer in-volved every step of the way. Incorporating the feeder systemsdesignedandmanufacturedbyFamarAutomations,Famar devel-ops complete production lines that start with therawmaterialanddeliverthefinishedpart, allwithinthe timeframe required and in perfect timing withthe loadingandunloadingschedulesof thereceiv-ingplants. Famar invests heavily in research and devel-opment, true to its mission of providing the bestmachining solutions to deliver perfectly machinedpiecesfast—adecisivefactorontoday’sglobalmar-ket.Famar’s international Infinity patent is a good example. Famar’sworldwidesuccesshascomefromitsex-pertiseincombiningprecisiondetailwiththehigh-estsafetystandards,whilemaximizingproductivity.

For Famar, criticism is always constructive, anopportunity to riseeven furtherup the ladderofimprovement.Nodefect, nomatterhowsmall, istolerated. Famar today can engineer tools to machine any kind of round mechanical part. But it strivestodomoreandbecomethesupplierofchoiceforcustomers looking for complete production lines.Thatiswhyitisdevelopingsystems for machining parts such as gearboxes, engine blocks, and cyl-inder heads. Forty years on and the Famar philosophy is asrelevantasever, willingandabletotakeoneventhetoughestofchallenges.

THE PERFECT CUTEvery machine tool manufactured by Famar is de-

signed and customized around the mechanical

part the customer wants to produce, consider-

ing its specific and unique features, production

volumes, and the machining time required to de-

liver a product that is competitive on the market.

THE GROUP

20/21

GROWING AS A GROUPThe Famar story begins in 1973 when Fausto

Marinello and Benedetto Testa went into part-

nership to open the M.T. s.n.c. workshop, laying the

foundation stone for the company’s success today.

AftertheopeningofthefirstFamarfactoryand,later,itsotherproductionsites,M.T.wastransformedintoajoint-stockcorporationandparentcompanyofFamarGroup.Today,M.T.S.p.A.isaholdingcompanywithcontrollinginterestsineachoftheFamarGroupcompanies. Nevertheless, those companies operateindependentlyofeachotherandofM.T.,inbothpro-ductionandcommercialterms.

FAUSTO MARINELLOFamar’s commitment to providing technological solutions to satisfy all its cus-tomers’ production needs led to the establishment of Fausto Marinello S.r.l., a partner for the development of milling operations. At its new, 4,000m2 hi-tech site in Sant’Ambrogio, the company engineers and develops innovative solutions for milling machines.Developed in keeping with the Famar philosophy, its systems are designed and built on a modular basis, and are fully customized to meet the customer’s production requirements. In 2013, Fausto Marinello S.r.l. launched a ground-breaking new product set to change the future of mechanical technology. It is the FM 52 I, the new horizon-tal twin-spindle machining center—the crowning achievement of Famar’s 40 years of growth and success.

FAMAR WERKZEUGMASCHINEN GmbHThe growth of its international business and the rapid success of Famar on world markets called for the more stable presence of the company outside of Italy.Besides the extensive network of agents established across a number of nations, that call was met by the establishment of Famar Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH.Located in Karlsruhe, the company’s German branch is responsible for the management and development of the German market (a key market for Famar) for all group brands.Thomas Bauer and the agents working under him directly manage existing and potential customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The German office, in collaboration with the Avigliana factory, provides customer service and spare parts to resolve any problems that arise fast and effectively.

FAMAR AUTOMATIONSFamar Automations was established in 2004 following the success of the Famar philosophy of providing complete, made to measure production sys-tems, and with the key input of Carlo Cirasola.Building on the experience gained in its early years, in 2008 the company de-cided to broaden its horizons and, besides the automation systems developed and produced for Famar machines, enter the market directly with its own feeder lines and handling systems. In 2012 it opened a new plant in Avigliana, located next to the historic Famar factory, where new areas of business are developed, such as special customized feeder lines and the standard range of handling systems for variously shaped pieces, and where robotic production units are engineered and manufactured.Famar Automations today is a consolidated business enjoying constant growth. It invests heavily in research and development to deliver the latest in automation, using cutting edge technology.

Besides the historic Famar S.r.l., Famar Group consists of:

A RANGE OF PARTNERSOver the years , Famar’s technological re-

search has led to the development of a se-

ries of products designed to satisfy the most

sophisticated needs of the global market.

The Famar range includes the following product lines.

ERGOThe flexibility of use of Ergo makes it an ideal choice for both small businesses and major manufacturers. Its versatility means it can be used as a stand-alone machine or inserted into a production line. Ergo is recommended as the best so-lution for all types of machining operations, from turning and drilling to milling, toothing and, to finish off, grinding. All your needs in one machine.

TANDEMThe Tandem range is designed to maximize productivity while minimizing bulk.It is the ideal choice for precision machining. Two independent pallet conveyors feed the work area and loading system, enabling output to be doubled or the one piece to be machined in two phases; alternatively two different elements can be machined at the one time.

These include machines that perform individualprocesses,aswellasother,productivity-boostingma-chinesthatprocess pieces “from the raw material to the finished part.” Famar machines are also availableinstandardversions.Moreoftenthannot, however, theyarecustomized to meet the production requirements of the customer. PRONTOThe winning features of these standard vertical lathes are their stability, thanks to their single base, their dynamic axes and their ease of use. Ideal for both small and big batches and for all types of machining operations, Pronto strikes the right balance between flexibility and capex savings.

SPECIAL MACHININGFamar offers custom-made solutions to resolve customers’ production issues, with a view to satisfying customers’ needs in full—the ultimate objective of any project. We work in close partnership with the customer to identify the best machining process for a piece, through to final production and installation. Specialist machines are developed on the basis of standard models, enabling top quality outcomes to be achieved at a fraction of the cost of developing a machine from scratch.

SUBBig on productivity but small on size, the Sub line is integrated with cutting-edge automation technology that loads and unloads pieces in three seconds flat. The biSub model features two work areas, enabling output to be doubled or the one piece to be machined in two phases.

MAXERThe Maxer line replaces the traditional use of a “lathe + machining center + gan-try loader,” thus reducing capex and saving on space. Pieces can be machined all in one go, minimizing geometric and shape defects. The single machining sta-tion also minimizes handling time and costs connected with loading/unloading operations.
